View Full Version : TEST GAME - RoM 2.8 WITHOUT RevDCM
45°38'N-13°47'E Nov 07, 2009, 06:24 AM Ok guys,
here's the thread about our test-game. Since RoM 2.8 with RevDCM doesn't seem stable enough to play in MP, we'll do some test with RoM 2.8 full WITHOUT RevDCM. This game will only be a test while we wait for a stable version of RoM with RevDCM (that could mean RoM 2.9 hopefully or 2.8x with a new version of RevDCM (which is now causing MP problems). This means that we know in advance this game could end in a crash at some point of the game.
Download Info
You can download RoM from here (various mirrors and torrent):

There's also a hotfix you can find here:

Game Info
The game will be held regularly once per week on Sunday evening, CET (GMT+1), starting at 20-20.30 (19-19.30 GMT); about 3 hours per session is what we planned, but of course it depends on when and how long players are available.
Planned start: November 15th or 22nd, to be discussed.
MP mode: DIRECT IP is probably the best way; we can try Direct IP + Pitboss (I have an old laptop which could work as a pitboss server but we'll have to test it too; I've done some preliminary tests and it looks it works; the problem could be my bandwith which is only 300 kbs in upload).
Game Options
These are still to be discussed; I'll post a list of options in the next days and we'll choose everything together.
Added Mods
To be discussed

I think that's all for now. Let's keep this thread specifically for THIS test-game. For every other discussion about our future real game, let's use the other thread:

45°38'N-13°47'E Nov 07, 2009, 06:42 AM Here's my proposal about options; I suggest you do the same using the following scheme:
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Noble
NUMBER OF CIVS: 18 would be enough, I think
SETTINGS:
Map: RoM Perfectworld or any other working map
Size: Huge
Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
New World Rules: Start Anywhere
Pangea Rules: Break Pangeas
OPTIONS:
Everything unchecked except:
Rising Seas
BarbarianCiv Mod (it's not part of RevDCM, right?)
TechDiffusion Mod
DynamicCivNames Mod
VICTORIES:
Everything enabled but Time
MULTIPLAYER:
Simultaneous Turns & Take over AI ON, the rest OFF
MODS:
For the moment, I'd say only RoM included mods should be used to keep it simple: I'd like Realistic Diplomacy and nothing else, but then we can discuss about it and add other mods.
cheesemijit Nov 07, 2009, 07:27 AM Im in, this is what i would like.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Prince
NUMBER OF CIVS: 18
SETTINGS:
Map: RoM Perfectworld2
Size: Huge
Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
New World Rules: Start Old World Only
Pangea Rules: Break Pangeas
OPTIONS: (Rising seas may be Multiplayer-problematic and BarbCiv is part of RevDCM)
Everything unchecked except:
TechDiffusion Mod
DynamicCivNames Mod
VICTORIES:
Everything enabled but Time and Cultue (Culture victories are happening around rennaissance for me)
MULTIPLAYER:
Simultaneous Turns & Take over AI ON, the rest OFF
MODS:
Agree with no modmods, but if ANY then Affores Realistic Diplomacy and Mountaneering.
E_Pluribus_Unum Nov 07, 2009, 09:43 AM Hi!
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: doesn't matter for me. (I was abe to win on Monarch so I'm not the bottleneck ;))
NUMBER OF CIVS: based on map size (Standard 10-15, Large 15-20, Huge 20-25)
SETTINGS:
Map: RoM Perfectworld or RoM Perfectworld2 (BTW what are the differences)
Size: Standard or Large (to avoid MAF)
Speed: Normal (because it's a test game)
New World Rules: Start Anywhere (I think the colonisation runnin ruins the game balance and experience. And without Revoltions and BarbCiv the new continent is totally empty and the first coloniser win the game.)
Pangea Rules: Break Pangeas
OPTIONS
No technology brokening ON. (Because the game is just too easy with OFF and lost game experience)
TechDiffusion Mod ON
DynamicCivNames Mod ON
VICTORIES:
Time victory OFF, the others doens't matter for me but I like all the others ON.
MODMODS:
NONE! Because stability and I'm unfamiliar with them. (And maybe not I'm the only one)
Both date is good for me to start.
45°38'N-13°47'E Nov 08, 2009, 02:29 PM Ok, I suppose Prince is ok with me as difficulty level. :)
Perfectworld2 is also ok; although I don't know the difference with perfectworld, I suppose a second version should be better than the first one... :)
I agree on "starting anywhere" for the reasons explained by EPU.
I also agree on every options but I abstain on "No technology brokening ON" (I'd prefer it off but I can adapt if the majority agrees to turn it ON).
I also think that "cultural victory" isn't an interesting victory; I'm only interested in getting ride of the "time victory" but if majority of people want to get rid of cultural, that's ok with me.
As for MODS, I don't think Realistic Diplomacy could cause any problem since it only make civs forget earlier their attitude towards you. I'd like it on because I don't think it causes any instability problem, but I'll go with the majority on this too.
Civ Fuehrer Nov 09, 2009, 08:32 PM DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Preferably Monarch or Emperor but Prince is fine
NUMBER OF CIVS: 18 is fine for me
SETTINGS:
Map: preferably RoM_Hemispheres
Size: Huge
Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
Island Rules: Normal Islands
OPTIONS:
TechDiffusion Mod
DynamicCivNames Mod
Unrestricted Leaders
Random Personalities
VICTORIES:
Everything enabled but Time, Cultue (Culture victories are happening around rennaissance for me) and Religious (AI tend to spread my religion over there own)
MULTIPLAYER:
Anything is fine
MODS:
Preferably Afforess's 1.4 modmod pack w/out seamonsters but definitely ANM 2.18:please:
45°38'N-13°47'E Nov 10, 2009, 03:50 AM Ok, for the moment I'd say we agree on:
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Prince
NUMBER OF CIVS: 18
OPTIONS:
TechDiffusion Mod
DynamicCivNames Mod
Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal (remember it's a test-game)
VICTORIES:
I think we can agree on Everything enabled but Time and Culture
MULTIPLAYER:
Simultaneous Turns & Take over AI ON, the rest OFF
These should be final.
As for the rest:
MAP: Perfectworld2 seems to be the best choice
SIZE: Huge (maybe large is too small for 18 civs?); I don't think huge can cause MAF, but I'm not sure about it.
I agree with EPU about "Starting anywhere".
MODS: since there are players unfamiliar with other mods, I'd say no modmods for this game (sorry about that CivFuehrer, we'll have to try ANM another time, but of course everyone has to agree to use it).
I think this could be something we could agree on.
Still waiting for an answer from DRJ if he wants to join in (and of course other players too).
Next sunday (November 15th) I could be online but not before 21 CET (20 GMT): if that's ok with you, we can start this sunday; else we'll have to start the following sunday (November 22nd).
Flay Nov 10, 2009, 04:55 AM How will you switch off revdcm ?
45°38'N-13°47'E Nov 10, 2009, 05:09 AM How will you switch off revdcm ?
I think by just unchecking it in the options menu... I think it's the rev and barbarian components which are causing trouble in mp; I know there are other features inside the mod, but I think the rest is integrated inside of RoM, so I hope turning off rev and barb (and every other option uncheckable from the option menu) will suffice.
Flay Nov 10, 2009, 05:28 AM I think you will be disapointed.
We tried yesterday an MP with everything off exept:
No technology brokening
IA agressiv
TechDiffusion Mod
DynamicCivNames Mod
Unrestricted Leaders
Maps tried : perfectworld 2, archipelagos, and big&small.
We got OOS an attack barbarian or other IA.
Back to 2.71 for us. . .

Damn, that looks like a big problem then... :(
Edit: Well, actually thinking about it
TechDiffusion Mod
DynamicCivNames Mod
Ranged bombardment
are all parts of revDCM... maybe we should turn everything off... I really don't know what to do.
Flay Nov 10, 2009, 06:20 AM it is easy to try to found out what Revdcm option is causing the OOS, if it is an option that cause it.
Turn off all than turn on one by one.
I will try to do so later today I just need to attack barbs.
but the boring thing is that the REVDCM control+alt+O doesn't work in 2.8. it could be good to have it activate again. so we do not need to start a single player game before each multi just to change the option one by one . . .
E_Pluribus_Unum Nov 10, 2009, 03:08 PM So what is now?
Still starting a test MP game?
45°38'N-13°47'E Nov 11, 2009, 04:39 AM So what is now?

I don't think so... it looks like it would crash very very soon... Maybe the only reasonable thing to do is to wait for a fix, or at least we can track down what's causing the oos. I'd wait at least until next week (although I don't think a solution will be found so quickly), then we can make just a connection test, without actually playing, just to check if anyone has connection troubles (firewalls, routers and so on). I think that's all we can do for now. :(
Snub Nov 15, 2009, 12:59 PM Doesn't matter if you turn everything off, just doesn't work D:
