View Full Version : LOR Game of the Month
bigfatjonny Nov 19, 2009, 03:22 AM Would anyone be interested in a friendly GOTM using LOR?
I really like reading how other people played the same game/map as I did. If we use revolutions, barb world & civ's, then every game will have totally different results.
What are your feelings on map type, size, speed, difficulty etc?
For a starter game I suggest;
Medium
Pangea
Epic
Emperor
Any thoughts and interest in this?
rkade8583 Nov 19, 2009, 10:42 AM I am very interested in this. My only condition is NO Tech diffusion. I play on Noble difficulty but I'm willing to try.

Why no tech diffusion? I find it doesn't really impact you that much, it just allows a few of the worst civ's to catch up a bit.
I prefer no tech brokering, because otherwise your well spent :science: :science: can go straight to your enemies even if you only want to gift tech to your vassels.
Maybe I can create a start that allows you to choose different difficultly levels. Can someone else post how to do that? Same player/civ & map etc but different difficulties.
rkade8583 Nov 19, 2009, 03:12 PM It makes beelining all the more easy by cheapening the techs you're sacrificing. Say you shoot to construction. By the time you research, say, mysticism, it's only a couple of turns.
I agree with the idea of custom options though.
bigfatjonny Nov 20, 2009, 07:57 AM I didn't realize that it made that much difference. I'll try turning it off in my next game.
That explains why in my current game my tech lead is consistent and not pulling ahead.
GoodGame Nov 26, 2009, 04:34 PM It'd be a good idea. Stuff like that helped Rhyes mods develop
bigfatjonny Nov 27, 2009, 03:37 AM OK, that is two - good enough for me.
Im currently in a very interesting but protracted game, where im second to Etheopia and might not win!
How about I set up a game for next weekend, Sunday 6th? Then we can discuss and agree civ and map settings over the next week.
I have already suggested some of the map settings;
Medium
Pangea
Epic
Emperor
No tech diffusion
No tech brokering
Barbarian Civ
Barbarian World
Revolutions
Start as Minor
How about some Civ suggestions.
I have been really enjoying my Spiritual game recently, so maybe one trait as spiritual?
rkade8583 Nov 27, 2009, 06:57 AM I always use Fractal for the randomness of it. Let's see here...
Standard or smaller (my comp kinda sucks) with 4+ civs
Don't care about the kind of map
Normal to marathon speed
I play noble but I'll try masochism
I like tech brokering! :) I can deal with it being gone though
And I'm cool with the rest of it.
As for leaders, I say randomize it but Spi/Enl might be interesting.
bigfatjonny Nov 27, 2009, 08:41 AM Who is Spiritual / Enlightened ? Im offline at the moment.
I might turn off goodie huts too - they tend to be too random.
Edit - I dont like tech brokering because diplomacy & trading is for wimps, I dont have time to check the tech screen every turn when im busy warmongering. I hate it when you gift techs to allies and then they sell it on to your worst enemy. I really like the vassal system, but find it unplayable with tech brokering turned on.
rkade8583 Nov 27, 2009, 12:45 PM Tech brokering only hinders you. The AI can futz everything up all they want. Spi/Enl is Saladin I think.
bigfatjonny Dec 08, 2009, 02:58 PM The 1st GOTM is now live!
You are Saladin and the year is 4000BC.
236655
Settings are -
236657
I couldn't figure out how to set up a game where everyone could choose their own difficulty setting so I have taken the middle ground and chosen Monarch.
The idea of this is a learning process, about LOR and about Civ. Saladin has the Enlightened trait so we can critique how this effects the game throughout.
I will start a new thread and post my own progress and screenshots, please do the same!
Keipher Dec 14, 2009, 06:07 AM Awesome! This is a great and really need idea.
Monarch and all the other settings are good, but I personally hate pangeas, (Can we use something else next time?) and will find it difficult to make time for an epic game during the Christmas season.
Thanks for the screens. For easy reference, do you think you could give a detailed text list of the settings, rules, and deadlines for this competition?
Though I personally love them, turning off huts might be a good idea. I think it'd be too easy to abuse with reloading, even without "New thread on reload" (or whatever the option was--I forget).
Thanks for starting this up.
::edit::
This is LoR, right? Wouldn't it be incredibly easy to cheat your way to ridiculous scores with help the map editor? Do you propose anything against that or are you counting on the goodwill and character of the players.
Anyhow, anyone trying this out, let's all post are results here--even you lose the game--for fun and comparision.
Personally, I think Monarch-with-no-reloading will be a first for me. ::grin::
Fun! Fun!
bigfatjonny Dec 14, 2009, 07:30 AM Hi Keipher
The settings are shown in the screenshot - it is fractal not pangea.
Standard, fractal, medium, temperate.
Ancient - Epic.
Barb world & civ ON.
Start as Minor ON
Dynamic names ON
Revolutions ON
Rising Seas ON
tech brokering OFF - My personal choice.
This is not a competition, just a friendly test game to showcase some of the new parts of LOR. There are no awards we are just interested to see how different players solve problems differently.
Look at the DAR thread - This game is very different to any ive played before so replaying and reloads are, I think, quite standard.
Hopefully Phungus will play too, he posted some interesting 'ideas' that I would like to see if they work.
Play & post - its the best way for everyone to feedback.
Keipher Jan 21, 2010, 05:35 AM I'm not sure what happened to our good man Johnny--he seems to still get online, but he hasn't posted in almost a month--but I was wondering how much interest there is in a 2nd game of the month. (Please post here if you'd like to join).
Perhaps some activity would inspire him to head it up again (hint, hint), but in the [sad] case that doesn't happen, I think GoTM's are too much fun to leave to be left in the dust.
Any feedback is most welcome!:bounce:
notalent Jan 27, 2010, 12:12 PM I would be interested, though I don't know if there is a new release planned that would not be save game compatible.
I would like something on a huge map this time. Perhaps an expansive leader
