View Full Version : Are You Worried?
VinManAgent11 Oct 16, 2002, 05:29 PM I have just thought of something that might be a problem with ptw. What if you have graphics mods that another person doesn't? Does the game kick you out?? I mean this may result in a LOT of people reinstalling their game just because of their own taste in graphics.
Submit your opinions.
Genghis Janeway Oct 16, 2002, 06:20 PM Could you please put it in more understandable terms?
VinManAgent11 Oct 16, 2002, 06:58 PM EXAMPLE:
I have 'improved irrigation graphics mod'.
You don't.
Then would we still be able to play?
warpstorm Oct 16, 2002, 07:00 PM I think the main thing that'll be checked are the .bix files not the actual art files. You will be forced to use the .bix that the host starts the game with. You can specify (actually only suggest through use of paths) artwork in a .bix now.
cgannon64 Oct 16, 2002, 07:01 PM Nothing will happen. In an SG of mine, at least 3 of the 4 players have different graphic mods, and we can swap saves easily. You must realize, in saves and in MP, only core gamplay elements are exchanged . Think of graphics as a filter with which you view the game; you and another person can have a different filter, and still play each other.
On the other hand, if any gameplay elements are different, I am pretty sure you play by the host's rules.

Syiss Oct 16, 2002, 09:38 PM Graphic mod's shouldnt cause a problem. I have played several other online games where people could have different graphics files and it didnt matter. Mod's that change the rules, however, will definately cause problems.
Chieftess Oct 16, 2002, 09:46 PM I think the main question might have been like:
"player a's gold gives 4 commerce
player b's gold gives 6 commerce
What will happen to the game?"

The game will still work, but the T/S/L rate will be affected. No biggie.
Graphics are even less of a problem, they have no affect at all.
Unless you have "extra" resources that are not included in the game.
The good news is according to the Friaxians, you will be able to switch mods easily with PTW. So if you are going to have an MP game you just open your mod manager and activate the one you want. Nice, eh?
Jon Shafer Oct 16, 2002, 10:36 PM Graphic mods won't be a problem, each one is individualized and won't affect anyone else.
.BIC mods will be transferred from the person who started the game, so custom rules won't be an issue either.
The only potential problem is when someone has a custom .BIC mod with new units that someone else might not have the graphics for.
Edited to make more sense

Exactly - and an excellent example. I test graphics mods by using random saved games - as CG says, the graphics are just a filter for what's really happening.

nothing happenes - 1 player hosts the game and HIS/HER *.bic will be used for all players - period.
That is the ONLY way to keep multiplayer fair and equal.
