View Full Version : C9 Mafia Game: Snowblind
Diamondeye Dec 31, 2009, 05:27 AM C9 Mafia Game: Snowblind
This short mafia game is a C9, which means that I will need only seven signups. First seven people to sign up will play. There will be two scum. There might be a doctor, and there might be a cop, but those are not guaranteed.
The game will have 24 hr nights and preferably 24 hr days as well, although this might be changed for the first day since it likely collides with New Years Eve.
Setting: Eight men are transporting a very valuable freight across the frozen wastes of Siberia. It's locked safely inside the strong hold of their two trucks, but a violent snowstorm has pinned them down, night is falling, and it looks like the storm won't wane for at least a couple of days. The men know of the importance of the goods they are carrying, and the urgency of their arrival, and decides that one of them, Ryan, who is an experienced skiier, will leave next morning to warn their superiors of the situation.
But when they wake up in the morning, Ryan is lying prone in his sleeping bag, brandishing several bulletholes in his chest. Apparently, someone among them wants the valuable load for themselves.
Stuck in a snowstorm with no means of escape for what looks like many days and with someone among them willing to murder to secure the cargo for themselves, the men must resort to the primitive, martial laws of nature in order to survive and guarantee the security of their cargo...
The game will start with a day phase, and there can be no support votes or abstaining from lynching. Ties will be resolved by a random number generator. Mark votes in traditional manner (Example) and withdrawal of votes in red strikethrough (Example)
Game will start when sign-ups are filled, in this thread:
Signups (7/7):
Choxorn - Lynched Day 1, Scum
Snerk
Catharsis
Civgeneral
Civplayah
rhawn
Electric926
choxorn Dec 31, 2009, 05:34 AM Innage.
Snerk Dec 31, 2009, 05:39 AM Innage.
This.
Catharsis Dec 31, 2009, 05:40 AM I'm blind!
This is the closest choxorn's getting to snow this holiday season. :mischief:
CivGeneral Dec 31, 2009, 06:58 AM Inn
10 Chers
Diamondeye Dec 31, 2009, 07:25 AM You only need 5 chars.
I need three more players before we can start.
civplayah Dec 31, 2009, 09:21 AM Innage.
rhawn Dec 31, 2009, 11:50 AM In....
KaiserElectric Dec 31, 2009, 03:14 PM In and all that jazz.
Sprig Jan 01, 2010, 02:00 AM watching :)
Diamondeye Jan 01, 2010, 09:31 AM The game is running! The day ends in roughly 27½ hours.
Those of you without PMs are ordinary innocents/townies.
Let the game... Begin!
Catharsis Jan 01, 2010, 10:16 AM Brrr, it's cold innit? We should probably all go and stand near choxorn - do you notice how none of the snow is falling anywhere near him? It's like that guy has his own little microclimate.
I don't trust Snerk the Norwegian fancyman, he sees faces in inanimate objects you know, he's obviously not all there.
civplayah Jan 01, 2010, 11:08 AM I'll abstain for now. There's not really anyone to vote for.
Snerk Jan 01, 2010, 11:27 AM The inanimate faces are telling me to vote for Catharsis.
rhawn Jan 01, 2010, 01:26 PM I think Snerk knows what he's talking about, let's hang Catharsis.
KaiserElectric Jan 01, 2010, 02:00 PM As much as I'd love to bandwagon, I'll have to abstain for now.
Palindrome post. :p p: .tsop emordnilaP
Diamondeye Jan 01, 2010, 03:07 PM Abstaining is a wasted vote. Read the original post.
choxorn Jan 01, 2010, 03:17 PM In that case, I vote Catharsis. I don't really like random votes, especially when we have nothing to act on.
Catharsis Jan 01, 2010, 04:24 PM Alright, fair enough. Random votes can be annoying. But consider the following:
We all have to vote for someone because abstaining is not allowed. Traditionally, the first day of a mafia game such as this one starts with a flurry of nonsensical random votes for whoever takes each player's fancy - for example, every single game ever hosted at the .org. My vote put Snerk in very little danger, and I would, of course, have abandoned it if any better leads came up (which they have, now: see below). You can bandwagon me if you wish, choxorn et al, but cease with the 'I don't like random votes' rhetoric and have the decency to call a spade a spade: you voted for me because I was the first person to speak up.
It is only by tossing some names into the pile that leads will appear - you're all veteran mafia players and you know that very well. The lead that has appeared from both my vote and the votes you placed on me is that some players are unwilling to contribute to the procedure, even going so far as to break the rules by abstaining. In my opinion, that is, to borrow a phrase that Diamondeye might use, 'scummy'. For that reason I remove my vote for Snerk and place a new one on electric926, because being the second to do something is more suspicious than being the first, I think.
In that case, I vote Catharsis. I don't really like random votes, especially when we have nothing to act on.
Now see reason, chox, that doesn't make any sense at all. If we have nothing to act on then every vote is essentially a random vote. In fact, the situation you described is the only case where random votes are excusable. :p
KaiserElectric Jan 01, 2010, 04:58 PM That's not very nice. :(
Changing my abstination to Catharsis even though it doesn't really matter now.
choxorn Jan 01, 2010, 07:00 PM Point taken, I kind of overlooked that, he edited it in after the game started. I couldn't really tell if you voted with or without reading that. Still, I have to vote somebody, and you're the best lead so far.
rhawn Jan 01, 2010, 11:50 PM Alright, fair enough. Random votes can be annoying. But consider the following:

What is this? Oh wow your argument convinced someone on the fence to bandwagon against you. Not a smart reactionary vote.
You are wrong, it is usually the the third person on the bandwagon that is usually guilty, so I'll switch from Catharsis to bandwagoneer number 3 Choxorn.
Snerk Jan 02, 2010, 04:30 AM Indeed, mafias are often late posting bandwagoneers. Switching from Catharsis to Choxorn.
Catharsis Jan 02, 2010, 05:01 AM Oh wow your argument convinced someone on the fence to bandwagon against you.
Yeah, I pretty much rock.
Does your argument that it is the third person to bandwagon who is guilty perhaps revolve around the fact that you were the second person to vote for me?
Point taken, I kind of overlooked that, he edited it in after the game started. I couldn't really tell if you voted with or without reading that. Still, I have to vote somebody, and you're the best lead so far.
Are you referring to the 'no abstentions' rule? Well, actually, it doesn't matter what you're referring to. Here's what I see:

Diamondeye hasn't edited anything into the first post since the game started.
Diamondeye Jan 02, 2010, 06:56 AM Correct. After editing in the last sign-ups, I sent out the PM(s) and started the game. Still, the no-abstaining rule might have been lost in the text for someone.
There is roughly six hours until night falls, and the tally says...
Catharsis: Electric926
Snerk: Choxorn
rhawn: Choxorn
Choxorn: Catharsis
Electric926: Catharsis
As such, there is a tie between Catharsis and Choxorn currently. If this is still the case when night falls, a RNG will be used to determine who is lynched. I would recommend the two remaining players, Civplayah and Civgeneral, to show signs of activity within the next six hours or at the very least in the next day phase.
civplayah Jan 02, 2010, 08:50 AM Alright, I'll go for choxorn, mainly because I don't know who else to vote for.
rhawn Jan 02, 2010, 12:26 PM Yeah, I pretty much rock.
Does your argument that it is the third person to bandwagon who is guilty perhaps revolve around the fact that you were the second person to vote for me?
It is well known that the second vote is not a bandwagon vote. It is the third vote that often starts the "poo"-storm for the bandwagonee.
Diamondeye Jan 02, 2010, 01:10 PM The atmosphere, as the temperature, was freezing cold. The men looked at each other with mistrust, and Catharsis was the first to voice his concerns over someone else, but was soon looking like the main suspect himself. But in the end, his convincing speech won over the majority of the drivers, and they instead turned their gaze towards Choxorn, who had been far too eager to dispatch of Catharsis earlier.
The other truck drivers advanced on Choxorn from all sides, barefisted or with any blunt object that was lying around. Choxorn stumbled backwards, holding his hand protectively out from his body. "Guys, listen, there's no need for this. We've already lost Ryan and you're only making this worse."
One of the approaching men, rhawn, shook his head. "No, we're ending it. It's you who's responsible for this mess, and you'll pay for it."
Choxorn's fuse had obviously burnt down, and he exploded in a loud outburst. "So what if I did? You'd have done the same thing, it's not like Ryan would even survive that trip, and I just want the freight so I can return to my family with more than a few pocket coins and-"
A swing from a large wrench hit him on the lower jaw and stopped his selfrighteous rant. The drivers stood around him and pounded and punished him with bare fists or their improvised weapons until Choxorn was but a broken frame buried in the bloody snow. Then they went inside the trucks to sleep through the freezing night.
Choxorn was antagonistic!
It is now night! Day comes in 24 hours.
Please send in night orders, those of you who have abilities!
Note that posting at night is not forbidden!
Snerk Jan 02, 2010, 01:20 PM Not bad for a fairly random lynch that.
choxorn Jan 02, 2010, 01:52 PM Ghost Comment: Catharsis, rhawn, you suck. :p
rhawn Jan 02, 2010, 02:44 PM The rule of three. Learn it, live it.
Catharsis Jan 02, 2010, 02:53 PM Rhawn, I doubted your perspicacity unfairly. Well done, sir.
Diamondeye Jan 03, 2010, 01:01 PM He couldn't sleep, but was lying outside, looking at his own breath, clearly visible in the frosty air. Would they make it home alive? Were there any more murderers than Choxorn?
So lost was he in these thoughts, that he only barely managed to catch a glimpse of the dark figure standing over him before the first bullet hit. Low, muffled noises gave away to revealing that the silenced pistol fired another two, and they, too, hit their target. As his world begun to darken, he could only look passively at the shadowy figure heading back towards the trucks.
He woke up again when another dark figure loomed over him, fiddling with a small briefcase in one hand and pacifying the wounded man's arms with the others. Suddenly, the wounded man felt a small sting in one of his arms, and the pain disappeared in a comfortable calm.
The dark figure quickly removed the bullets and bandaged the wounds of the patient, staying with him until he woke up. He left just as the man lying in the bloody snow opened his eyes, refusing to reveal his saviours identity. "Better get some clean clothes on, the dawn is breaking," the figure who had saved his life said while heading back towards the truck. The wounded man looked down at himself and decided that the man who had saved him had a point; his clothes were not only soaked in blood but also freezing cold to the touch.
It is now day! Night falls in 24 hours!
Someone saved an unknown person from dying. Nobody else have been attacked.
Note that this basic mafia game works without the clues that are traditional for CFC mafia games.
Please keep voting in the format stated in the Original Post
civplayah Jan 03, 2010, 02:18 PM CivGeneral has been awfully quiet. Care to speak up?
Catharsis Jan 03, 2010, 02:43 PM Gonna have to vote for electric926 again. The previous day's votes suggest that it's either him or CivGeneral, and CG hasn't even shown up, which suggests that he doesn't realise the game has started, which means he didn't get a PM, which means he isn't mafia.
Snerk Jan 03, 2010, 03:09 PM Aye it's most likely electric.
KaiserElectric Jan 03, 2010, 03:56 PM Why me? :(
I'll vote for CivGeneral to even things out.
civplayah Jan 03, 2010, 04:29 PM Catharsis does make a good point. CivGeneral, and I'll vote for electric.
rhawn Jan 03, 2010, 06:17 PM Hmm. Well it looks like someone tried to kill me last night and someone saved me. Thank you mystery man, I owe you my life. Ok, so one of us is mafia out of the six remaining.
My gut tells me that civplayah is innocent because he cast the deciding vote against Choxorn. I think Catharsis is also innocent because he would not have accused electric yesterday, he would have likely tried a counter-bandwagon against someone else. Also his reasoning about CivGeneral is clear enough. He must sincerely believe that electric926 is mafia so I'll go along with that for now.
CCRunner Jan 04, 2010, 12:24 AM Just popping in to say I see no possible inspiration for this game in any areas at all related to me ;)
Diamondeye Jan 04, 2010, 12:29 AM Just popping in to say I see no possible inspiration for this game in any areas at all related to me ;)
:mischief:
Diamondeye Jan 04, 2010, 02:00 PM Despite the cold rhawn pulled off his sweater and undershirt, revealing three bulletwounds, all pretty severe but also given swift medical attention. He redressed and sent Electric926 and accusive glance. Several of the others joined in, and Electric's vague attempt to redirect their anger was a disastrous failure. Soon, Rhawn had found a large spanner and one of the others had grapped an empty bottle. Slowly but surely they were closing in on the lone trucker, no others coming to his aid. As he felt the trunk of a tree against his back, he quickly reached down and found a silenced pistol in one of his boots, pointing it around at the others.
"You might have gotten Chox this easily, but I won't go down without a fight. That haul's mine!"
Rhawn threw himself at Electric, swinging the spanner in a great arc. A hiff from the gun followed by a thump was heard as a bullet entered Rhawn's left arm, but he struck his blow home and the silenced pistol skidded across the ice, out of Electric's reach. He was quickly pummeled by the others until he was barely recognizable. It was clear to conclude that...
Electric926 was the second antagonist!
Tally:
Civplayah: Electric926
Catharsis: Electric926
Snerk: Electric926
Electric926: Civgeneral
Rhawn: Electric926
Electric926: 4
Civgeneral: 1
Innocents, congratulations on the dominating victory! Special props to Catharsis, who played a good game as both townsperson and doctor!
Catharsis Jan 04, 2010, 02:48 PM Oh nice, all five innocents survived. Good game everyone.
choxorn Jan 04, 2010, 03:16 PM Well, CCRunner, looks like you can start your game. This has got to be one of the shortest mafia games I've ever seen, and certainly the first time I've ever seen all the innocents survive.
KaiserElectric Jan 04, 2010, 04:53 PM The one time I get mafia...
CCRunner Jan 04, 2010, 06:06 PM Linky (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=8782139#post8782139)
Nictel Jan 04, 2010, 06:11 PM  That must have been the shortest game ever.
civplayah Jan 04, 2010, 06:13 PM Yeah. Go innocents!
rhawn Jan 04, 2010, 06:37 PM Wow. That one quick game. Shot 4 times and I survive. Good job guys, thanks for saving me Catharsis.
Snerk Jan 05, 2010, 06:18 AM Well played my fellow townies.
choxorn Jan 05, 2010, 03:15 PM So, who was the investigator?
civplayah Jan 05, 2010, 03:33 PM There was none.
Diamondeye Jan 06, 2010, 04:36 AM correct.
