View Full Version : CET PTW multyplayer converence corner
ERIKK Oct 25, 2002, 12:11 PM CET = Central European Timezone!
Hello fellow players,
I don't know if the moderators approve a thread like this, if they don't: close it.
I think it is wise to set up some nation-based player groups to be able play decent games. I say decent because a civ-game takes a lot of time and discussion about playtimes, set-ups etc... So, to encounter these things we might want to set up local player groups based on timezones, language (maybe).
Any reactions please?
ps; looking at Thunderfalls remark about clans in this (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34930) thread, we could start a Dutch PTW group :scan: , playing amongst each other or against other clans.
Thanks for comments in advance!
ERIKK :D
Beam Oct 25, 2002, 01:10 PM ERIKK, as we discussed before. I AM IN.
Hopefully I get my US order soon so that we can start thinking how we want to play it.

Civanator Oct 25, 2002, 01:29 PM isn't the CET timezone +1 to +3 GMT? I was wondering, cause i might play with you guys, even though i live in a -5 GMT timezone

It is GMT + 1! It is possible; if we play in the evening it will be daytime at your place.
Sgt.Hellfish Oct 26, 2002, 06:16 AM well 1+ Ill be in when I get it... am I the only person from this tiny Island that plays this game?

There's more in the demogame from that tiny Island. ;)
Civanator Oct 26, 2002, 09:09 AM when you guys in europe play in the evening i will be in school monday-friday unless it is a holiday or vacation.
Matrix Oct 27, 2002, 05:07 AM I'm in too, yet I don't know whether I'll play a lot of games. And I think I'll only play turn based games and preferably with more than three which will take several sessions, and my experience with Civ2 is that people usually want to finish a game in one session. :undecide: But apart from that, I'm in! :)
Civanator Oct 27, 2002, 07:17 AM i can finish a game in more than one session, usually though i finish in one, but those are different games, like AOK: TC

I would like to play turn based too (old style) and with as much people as possible. This will (probably) take lots of time and planning. A game might can take up many sessions.... (see Narz's civ2 MP-game). Therefore setting up a strict plan (times, dates) will be neccesary (spelling??? ). I think only the die hards wanna play such games :borg: !
So, we got to find some reliable fellow die hards...!:scan:
Kemal Oct 27, 2002, 08:44 AM I'm in too, no problem with multiple sessions and turn based mode, I just hope my connection is fast enough. I haven't played any MP games via internet yet (only via local networks). I have cable connection but with a 28k8 modem.
A Dutch clan is a great idea, any ideas about a name? Too bad we still have to wait about a month before we get PTW here in Holland. It will not be a very nice month with all the Americans already playing and we having to read about it on the forums. :(

How about the Flying Dutchmen? I Western European clan could be feasible as well.
And there will most likely be at least one Dutchman playing and posting if EBGames do their job :D

So, we got to find some reliable fellow die hards...!:scan: It's doable. There have been several so-called "diplogames": Multiplayer games where diplomacy was actually involved. (One of my biggest diappointments at CFC was discovering that standard Civ2 MP games do not involve diplomacy but were played just as some other RTS game.) But to play such a diplogame you really need to agree to play at a certain time every week, or day. I tried it once with 5 and later on 4 others, but we did not succeed. :(
Anyway, I'm very glad that one is still able to multitask during Civ3, so that I'll be able to do other things when it's not my turn... :)
By the way, it's "nescessary". ;)
ERIKK Oct 30, 2002, 01:51 AM Folks!
This forum is growing too fast and will become a thread jungle in a few weeks. I will set up a new thread by the time the game ships in the Netherlands; the Dutch PTW thread (for all CET players). Then we can make appointsments and/or a sort of a schedule. Also, I anybody has a better plan: please let me know!
Keep an eye out in this forum!

ps;
CET = central european timezone
Shabbaman Oct 30, 2002, 07:51 AM Yeah, it's more the generalization of all people in the central european timezone into the dutch clan.

JoeM Oct 30, 2002, 10:10 AM Err Is my timezone (GMT) really gonna preclude me from GMT +1?
How about a Eurozone group for the realtime games? IF we're starting at 7pm GMT, all users should be able to join in, no?

Of course, you are right! It is not clear how many people actually wanna join in by the time the game is avaiable in Europe. We might need to split up in some groups. Therefore I am planning to make a (at least one) group...
Also, I am not sure what CFC is planning to do with clans. I mean: are they gonna support it? Will there be a clan forum? Etc..., etc..
Rusty Nail Oct 31, 2002, 03:22 AM How about the Flying Dutchmen?
How About the "Dying Dutchmen"? (HEHEHEHE)
Kemal Oct 31, 2002, 03:41 AM You may find yourself being "hammered" by those Dying Dutchmen, Rusty Nail, so better watch yourself. ;)
Redwatch Oct 31, 2002, 05:26 AM Good idea Erikk.
Sure Clint wants to join also... Looks like a big clan. Maybe we should make different clans in the same CET +/-... So we can compete with different clans in the same time zone.
Also post this on dutchciv...
ProPain Oct 31, 2002, 06:31 AM I'll join too.
I say we all download the dutch mod and fill up those VOC Galleons :)
Or we can make a new dutch mod with the stoned tourist as a UU. It replaces the explorer and has flying abilities. Fits in with the flying dutchmen motive as well.
Redwatch Oct 31, 2002, 08:23 AM How about Pim Fortuyn or something.... Claus maybe... Or Prince Willem Bier
Sgt.Hellfish Oct 31, 2002, 09:39 AM Maybe us Brits (English whatever) will have to set up our own clan if theres enuf support that is
DutchCiv Nov 01, 2002, 04:48 AM I like the idea of a Dutch Clan VERY much (don't know why exactly :D ). It's time to show the world what it is like to be blown over by 'cheeseheads':crazyeye:
I hope somebody is able to come up with a little more original name (yes Flying Dutchmen makes sense, but I have seen that name A LOT)
Kemal Nov 01, 2002, 07:42 AM Just some thoughts about a name:
- "The Dutch Destroyers"
- "Hollands Glorie"
- "De Oranjevereniging"
Or, to make it as Dutch as possible:
-"De Aardappeleters"

Of course when the game ships we can/will play with other CET (and more) players! Still, three weeks to go!
What will we play? PBEM goes fine as for now, looking at our lucky US fellow players! If MP can be played thru direct IP by that time, it will be a option too...
Firaxis producer Jeff Morris announced in yesterday's Apolyton chat that Firaxis is working on the second patch for PTW. The patch will address MP slowdown problem and will include a direct IP connection option which will bypass the Gamespy matchmaking.
We`re aware that the gamespy connection stuff is problematic right now and it`s the focus of our team. We`ve got a list of things that will be fixed in this patch and that along with host slowdowns are on the agenda. So far I haven`t heard of any single player issues, editor or LAN/PBEM/Hotseat issues so right now we`re focused on internet performance....
We`re looking into a list of about 5 major issues related to internet play right now. One new feature of the patch will be a direct connect IP option.
Hopefully we don't need to wait too long for the patch...

From what I've read so far turnless mode seems to give you really very little time to complete a turn (slowest mode 10 sec for turn 1? ), meaning you'll probably end up running your empire in a state of Dutch-... ehh Touch-and-go for the entire game.
Since (for obvious reasons :( ) I haven't been able to play PTW yet, it might not be so bad and I will give turnless mode a chance but as I see it now I would prefer turn-based and PBEM games.
I know turn-based means waiting for other players' turns but there's lots of other things to do while waiting, such as planning a long-term strategy, or (since Civ3 can be windowed) browsing the CFC forum. :D
Matrix Nov 05, 2002, 07:33 AM As I've said before, I think I'll only like turn based. I don't care if I have to wait a long time. There are lots of other things to do while waiting. ;)
Personally I like the idea of a "great Dutch game". :) One game with eight of us, which undoubtly will take a lot of sessions! :jump:
It does however require a lot! We need to decide a date for every time we play and you must show up then or cancel it some time before.
Best would be to either play every evening (from 19:00 till 23:00) and cancel when someone has another appointment (or homework  ). That way it won't take too long. :)
Alternatively we could play every sunday evening, since usually everybody is at home at sunday evening.
Who would be willing to give it a try when we have PTW?
By the way (1), are there people here who won't buy PTW immediately?
By the way (2), I find AllDutch rather plain. :undecide: I'm still in for De Aardappeleters...

ASSUMPTION: you're talking PBEM here (???)
Great! I will buy it as soon as it arrives. 8 players (!), I am in! Allthough I cannot garantee every night/evening. But if we plan ahead, every week (a schedule), it must be possible to make great progress every week! Planning ahead might reduce people from last-minutel-cancelling!
I don't care about what we call it, but i thought AllDutch had everything in it and everybody understands it (it's English)...

Yeah I saw it, but isn't PBEM turn-based too... (that's why the assumption) ;)
It's OK for me, but will be a lot more difficult to arrange (that won't hold me off nor scare me away ). I have ADSL, hopefully the others have a fast connection too and direct IP must be available by then (it must be  ).
As I said, I'm OK with it. Maybe we should poll it? I would like to know what the others think about it.

Cruise Nov 05, 2002, 09:01 AM I am up for it :)
Kemal Nov 05, 2002, 10:13 AM Great idea, don't care how slow the game progresses, I'll play!
It will take a lot of planning, especially with 8 people having to have time available at the same time but I'm sure that everyone can find or make some time for such an event (at least) once a week. Also, participants will have to be able to swallow some of the unfairness of civ3's combat system, or a crappy starting position.
With 8 players, there will always be someone at 8th, and thus last, position, and I assume we don't want players quitting in midgame after already countless hourts of playing and planning ahead.
Guess if it happens to me, I can always try and sign an "Aardappeleters alliance" with Matrix... :scan: ;)
Matrix Nov 05, 2002, 05:34 PM Indeed, we don't want people to quit too fast. I myself never have trouble with performing bad. It's a thing I learned with the GOTM. ;)
But I think I really need to find out how PBEM works. :o
Edit: Checked! But I won't like it. Playing "live" is far more fun! :)

Read the pioneer thread, seems they have a lot of fun too me...! I don't mind playing PBEM. It looks far more manageable (allthough we have no reports about turn based :( yet) and less restricted to time/schedulling. But the game will take much longer with 8 players. That s*cks....
Shabbaman Nov 06, 2002, 02:46 AM I guess I can play some evenings, here at the university I've got some huge download/upload capacity, so that'd make this computer a great server.

Matrix Nov 20, 2002, 03:51 PM Good idea, Grey Fox! ;)
And ERIKK, I think it's best to think of a name when the game has some body. For example: when it appears there are two main continents, it might be a good idea to call it "De kloof" or "The cleft". :) I won't make my hands dirty on the name yet. ;)

As I mentioned before, the university computers are real powerhouses, so over the weekend I can probably host a game occasionally.
As for the rest, I'm all for Agent Orange, and against any clan name concerning the word 'dutch'. The main reason is that the english language has way too much possibilities of making fun of that name (i.e. 'double dutch')

Kemal Nov 29, 2002, 02:50 AM I think we'll have to come up with a name pretty fast now, because PTW is available in the Netherlands now!
I finally got my copy of PTW today!
[party][dance][dance][dance][party]
Too bad I have lots of work on my study to do until the 6th of December :(.
ERIKK Nov 29, 2002, 02:58 AM Have you checked the game yet? Seems there are stil some problems with the European versions! Check http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37852 for info!
Yes we NEED a name by now! But not all have responded yet.
Kemal Nov 29, 2002, 03:19 AM
There is indeed a major problem when installing 1.14f.
When the game is patched to 1.14f and you try to start the game, it starts asking for you to insert the cd in your cd-player even when it's already there, so in other words it no longer recognizes the PTW cd and therefore it is unplayable when patched.

ERIKK Nov 29, 2002, 03:30 AM What are they (infogrames, firaxis)?
Dumb, stupid, ignorant, they don't care a bit????? I don't believe they did not know this would happen! At least they could have told us there would be problems when installing the patch on the European versions!
Sorry for you Kemal. Once you finally have it, it is unplayable! :(
Kemal Nov 29, 2002, 03:38 AM Yes, it seems that again either Infogrames or Firaxis have decided to put a program on the market before it performs up to standards.
I guess us Europeans will just have to wait.... again. What else is new?
ERIKK Nov 29, 2002, 03:50 AM Seems a lot of Dutchies are having this problem! Have not seen any (the same) reports from other nationalities yet...
Kemal Nov 29, 2002, 03:54 AM And to make matters worse, installing 1.04 gives the same problems too! Now what does it say there on the box....
"What's the best way to discover the world? Play it....."
But not with this crappy package, I might add! ;)
ERIKK Nov 29, 2002, 12:51 PM

Kemal Dec 01, 2002, 10:06 AM Agent Orange as name is fine with me.
Plux, you can still join the very first Dutch PBEM game. Check the link in ERIKK's sig. :)
Shabbaman Dec 02, 2002, 01:43 AM ?Matrix, what's wrong with your avatar?
A pity I can't join the first Agent Orange game, since:
a. I didn't acquire PTW yet, but that's scheduled for this week
b. Some TOTAL IDIOT cut the telephone wire! And since I don't play civ3 here (university) as long as my research project isn't finished, which will take another week or two, no MP for me :(
BTW, my video drivers are also messed up. My computer thinks that I don't even have a 3d card... But UT works, and civ3 does still work, so it isn't that high on my priority list.
But that crappy inmate of mine...
How on earth can you cut down the phone line? Ass...
How large are the PBEM files btw?
EDIT:
1. Don't you guys think that orange red looks a lot more orange than orange?
2. Update on the phone business: my mobile phone has died as well  crappy nokia's... Anybody got a spare?
3. What's up with the patch not working and all?
4. I just managed to get a hold of myself NOT posting a firaxis rant that would most certainly have costed me a ban, so congrats on myself. I think I'm going home now to sit in a corner and weep...
ERIKK Dec 03, 2002, 11:06 AM Shabba, don't worry about the game ;) You can play 114f!
Shabbaman Dec 04, 2002, 03:14 AM Great. Now all I've to do is get my phone hooked up again (and acquire PTW, minor detail)
anarres Dec 04, 2002, 10:40 AM I'm in if it's ok. I'm only an poor little Englishman, but at least I'm European :D
Where do I sign up? (or have I just done it?)

Anarres, Shabbaman we got a game allready running. See my sig for the thread and the website (YES, we do have a website :scan: , Matrix built it :goodjob: ).
But when one of you starts a new PBEM I will join you and I am sure some of the other Agent Oranhe guys will join too! Also there might be more Brits wanna play. Rodney Sandy for instance!
If you want something :groucho: , PM me your email!

A time ago I was wondering whether or not I'd submit my image for 'the faces of cfc', but since I'd be side by side with pictures of ppl's weddings and stuff I still didn't find out.
Maybe matrix can make us a agent orange site.
Oh yeah, I think that we could have english members, as long as they denounce their own queen and take ours as their rightfull souvereign
:D

Matrix Dec 05, 2002, 02:54 PM With "character" I mean to describe the player's character in the game. E.g. they may be hostile, or friendly. And more importantly (for human players) whether they're to be trusted. :satan:
Overall, a description of their playing style. :king:
ERIKK Dec 07, 2002, 07:03 AM Yo people,
Shall I initiate another PBEM game. Seems like a second Agent Orange™ PBEM game can be easily set up as the first one has slow progress. I certainly have a feel for it, please let me know if you feel the same :)
Redwatch Dec 07, 2002, 11:50 AM Well ok, i'm in.... but don't start to  when you're on the same distance as the first game erikk. :king:
:egypt: :egypt: :egypt:
anarres Dec 07, 2002, 06:12 PM I'm in.
ERIKK Dec 08, 2002, 02:43 AM All right then!
A junglebrother, a fat cow ;) and an English elite micromanager ;) are up! Who else wants to join this crazy outfit? :)
Shall we try to make it to 8 people? The DDPP game, with 6 people, has 7 (or 8) turns in 6 days which is pretty OK to me!
I'll be the Americans.
THE SECOND AGENT ORANGE PBEM™ GAME IS OPEN!
anarres Dec 08, 2002, 09:26 AM Have any map settings been decided, or are some/all of them to be random?
Knowing the map size (and any map choices) is kinda important to me when I choose a civ to play. On my own, I normally randomise everything apart from the map size.

I guess if we make it to 8 civilizations, a standard map will do.
anarres Dec 08, 2002, 09:44 AM In that case can I be the Celts? I like the idea of fast swordsmen.
One question - can the UU's still be upgraded as per civ3 v1.29? The PTW civlopedia is missing the upgrade links as in the first civ3 release...
ERIKK Dec 08, 2002, 09:48 AM AFIAK PTW has the CIVIII 1.29f patch standard on it. But about the upgrades I am not sure.
anarres Dec 08, 2002, 09:58 AM p.s. there is now a european patch available for PTW - see the main page (sorry if this is old news to anyone)
ERIKK Dec 09, 2002, 02:49 AM Sent an annoucement over at Chieftess her PBEM registry thread http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=641959#post641959
When do you guys wanna start? (How long will we wait for people to join...)
anarres Dec 09, 2002, 03:36 AM I've changed my mind about being the Celts (damn early golden age messing up my game). I wanna choose again, I will re-read the new civs when I get home. (I would be the Egyptions, but that would be unfair ;))
ERIKK Dec 09, 2002, 03:48 AM I don't care. Choose any civ as long as nobody else has chosen it yet... :)
Matrix Dec 09, 2002, 05:10 AM I'd like to join too, as long as you won't mind that I don't have that much time the first two weeks. But we probably won't start right away anyway.
I'll be Straland again (played as Babylon this time).
Hey, someone's got to make the website. :king:
ERIKK Dec 09, 2002, 05:20 AM Welcome Matrix! :)
Hey, someone's got to make the website.

I'll sign you up! :)
Kemal Dec 09, 2002, 09:30 AM Since it's an Agent Orange game you're setting up, I cannot refuse. :)
I would like to play France this time.
Redwatch Dec 09, 2002, 09:50 AM i've asked Clint to join, he'll be signing up this evening... the civ he wants to play with the :egypt: :egypt: .... what a pitty.
But then again, he might be scared, he's not that good :suicide:
anarres Dec 09, 2002, 12:31 PM OK, can I be the Ottomans please. Can anyone give me an idea of time commitments?
ERIKK Dec 09, 2002, 02:19 PM Welcome Clint (in advance) and Kemal! :)
We need to know each others emailadresses. I will put them in the registry thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=641959#post641959 ).
About time commitments: just check your email every day! It will probably turn out to 1 turn a day. I can only play that turn in the evening because of work. Maybe in the weekend we will be able to play some more. Lets hold on to the turn sequence of the first Agent Orange PBEM game, that works fine to me! (If it's ok with you all)
We allready have 6 players! Only two empty spots left!
PS: Redwatch what will be your civ?
PS2: Any comments?
Kemal Dec 09, 2002, 02:30 PM I'll use the same address as in the first Agent Orange game, ERIKK, so you can just copy it to the new registry for this game. :)
ProPain Dec 10, 2002, 02:30 AM Erikk, I'd like to join this one too. Sign me up with Persia plz, so I can flood the world with my immortals :) . If possible I would like to play my turn during daytime.
Matrix Dec 10, 2002, 03:41 AM I'd like to play just before dinner time again. :)
ProPain, won't it be easier to play this GOTM at the same time as the other one?
Lt. 'Killer' M. Dec 10, 2002, 05:55 AM Can I join? (or am I too 'crack' ;))
I'd like to play Scandinavia
Matrix Dec 10, 2002, 06:00 AM Hey, that would be great, Killer! :yeah:

ERIKK Dec 10, 2002, 10:22 AM This game is full and is started up!

You can create a 5th Agent Orange game over at the PBEM thread. Use the lay out from the other games. But I see a lot of games are being started and a lot of newbe's suddely appeared!
But if you want only Agent Orange members in your game you should PM some guys first.

Matrix Dec 29, 2002, 05:53 AM First of all, "clans" are "tribes" in Civ-terms. ;) Always has been with Civ2 at least.
Secondly, the point of tribes is that people of one tribe can fight people of other tribes. I.e. 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, etc. I wouldn't mix up diplomatic games and those type of games.......

Hi Matrix, we posted at the same time!
Clan/Tribe: some of us use the word tribe others clan. Doesn't matter that much IMHO.
On your second point I agree of course. Other clans/tribes have to emerge yet. Where are our opponents???? Right now we are stuck with playing each other, which isn't that bad of course! ;)
