many things even when he might not be able to take full advantage of what he learns .

have been looking into the editor quite a bit lately . have just begun to add units which sort of encourages me to think about other possibilities . I am not much of a player and sort of a coward . It scares me when the AI covers the entire surface of the map and if ı survive long enough to see the fourth age it is then another - small - problem . Man is about to conquer stars yet it flies F15s Mig 29s , drives around in tanks ?

one of the first ideas is to have extra terrain that will be only available to me , with lots of possibilities for units and resources , hence to have settleable undersea areas . Is the coast , sea , ocean distinction hardcoded ? Can ı have Ocean2 that will be settleable , capable of sinking galleys without mercy , terraformable so that ı can railroad my decidedly FAMOUS small army from one trouble spot to the other without hassle ( Failing that ı will have space-carriers rebaseable from one city to the other ) and visually will change colours at the beginning of the fourth age - just like the army or the worker looking different at certain ages - as if deepsea research has recently mapped the undersurface ?

This is not possible, I'm afraid; it is hardcoded :(

You can make oceans impassable to wheeled units and have galleys be wheeled units.

Maybe u could take an ocean graphics file that somebody else has built and rename it with a name of a passable land graphics like desert for example.
Then the land would be passable but would still look like ocean.
Unfortunately the AI would be able to pass over this land as well.

This might work, butI've never tried it before.

me neither.

You can edit ocean tiles to allow cities and sea units can be settlers and workers. You can even perform some terraform actions on ocean tiles but I'm not sure if they work properly. I think roads build on sea might give the trade bonus but don't allow land units to move across sea. The AI will not use this though, which seems to be what you want anyway.

Cheers

That would work, but only for scenarios I think. And you would lose a normal land terrain type in the process. In essence, as you said, land units would have to be made wheeled, and units that are land and ocean would be foot units. Of course, normal sea units would not be able to exist in such a case, and unless done right would be a bit strange.

I would think for a scenario set in the future, it would do well. WW2 scenario it would probably hinder it.

thanks . ı was afraid this hardcoding might have been the case . ı was always trying to do something like this even since playing Civ 1 where you could move land units across sea only at a one move per turn if appropiately roaded .

if ı use a land terrain type -impassable but you can airdrop into it- in the middle of the ocean say Atlantic would there be coasts around it ? ı would like the oceans to look dangerously blue , coasts in the middle of them would look bad . ı should have tried it , but ı don't have net at home plus as ı said ı am right in the start of the learning curve . Merely adding units and like at the moment .

Yes, there'll be coasts around it, and you can't airdrop onto impassable terrain, sadly :(

You can have a land LM terrain with coast graphics, so you can simulate a fordable river.

regarding Virote Considon's post ı have some odd version of Civ , as far as it appears . ı have this 180 by 180 Earth map (Huge) from the Civ vanilla's scenarios , where West Europe is very small and it can't offer the strenght of the real life . So ı tried to make the grasslands impassable to make sure the West Europe could only be invaded by marines , meaning late in the game . Tested it and ı remember helicoptering a marine onto a single tile of grassland island while the shipboard one could not land . ( ı assume once roads are in place somehow there are no problems with movement into such tiles .) Is my version of Civ - once again - at play here ? ı am better remembered by my obstinate behaviour on having Scientific ages , which ı am not having now - having patched to Conquests 1.22 .

"You can have a land LM terrain with coast graphics, so you can simulate a fordable river. " as ı said ı am totally new and have been confused about LM . Are there tutorials on what are they , how they work and this ship movement into land or land units into water ? ı don't know anything about them Takhisis , thanks for pointing that , there are even more things ı should learn about .

It sounds, r16, like you have what we call "Vanilla Civ3" which is the original Civ 3 game. They later made Civ 3 PTW (Play the World) and Civ 3 Conquests, also called C3C, which is what most mods are made for, because it has things like LM (landmark) terrain and active volcanoes, which the vanilla game didn't. If you can find it, the thing to get is Civ 3 Complete, which includes all three games.

ı actually begged for a Conquests disk from a guy who had great difficulty in parting with it . Keep it until he forgets it ever existed .
