View Full Version : World Series
Steve Winer Oct 28, 2002, 11:26 AM Man, I can't believe there isn't a thread about this. Any of you guys watch it, I mean, every game. It was highly fascinating, and was full of drama. If you guys get the american channels in europe, you should have tuned in and watched a great match between 2 teams that I thought would never be were they were at the beginning of the season. Very amazing.:D
Cantankerous Oct 28, 2002, 11:50 PM Steve Winer,
There was a thread for the World Series (kind of). See the thread "Whos going to win the World Series?".
But I have to agree with you that this was a great series.
To me what made it even greater was that fact that neither team had ever been to the World Series. (OK, the Giants franchise had been almost 50 years ago when they were still in NY, but the SF Giants had never been.) To me it made it much more special because it wasn't the "same old teams again this year", and it allowed fans of those two teams to experience something their cities had never been a part of.
And any time the Series goes 7 games is a plus. That just means that both teams had their share of ups and downs and no one team ran away with it. And that always makes for MUCH better games for general baseball fans.
Ming Oct 29, 2002, 12:40 AM What made the series great was the constant change in momentum... After Game 3, all the sports writers and announcers annointed the Angels as the eventual winners... "nobody can stop their hitting attack... blah blah blah"
The the Giants tied up the series and then took charge. Now all the wishy washy announcers were talking about the unstopable offense of the Giants, and their great (huh) relief staff... And then the Giants take a 5 - 0 lead in game 6... It's all over... bring out the champaign... right... NAH... The Angels fight back and win the game... And many of us got what we wanted out of this series... a Game 7.
I'm sure Fox wasn't pleased with the ratings... the California series didn't generate the normal interest... but true baseball fans got a good treat... a fun World Series. Congrats to the Angels, and Congrats to the Giants as well... Thanks for a good World Series.
tcjsavannah Oct 29, 2002, 07:52 AM Ratings nowadays with events like the World Series, Monday Night Football, etc. just don't mean as much as they used to when there were only three networks and if you didn't like what was on TV, you went out.
With literally hundreds of channels available through satellite dishes and cable systems, everyone who normally turned the TV off during events like the World Series is now surfing the pay channels, watching Animal Planet or Food Network or whatever.
Without knowing the exact numbers off the the top of my head, I'd say that more people watched the World Series this year than 10 years ago, but the ratings will of course be down because a) there's more people around now than back then and b) there's more TVs on in general, diluting the market share.
The days of getting a 50 share for ANY show are long gone.
Ming Oct 29, 2002, 09:41 AM While you raise some excellent points, and many which are true...
More total people in the US watched the World Series 10 years ago... the ratings were that bad. ;)
Chieftess Oct 31, 2002, 01:07 PM Well, speaking of the ratings.. I don't think they tell the whole story. Remember what happened during the World Series? The Maryland/Virginia Sniper. I think more people were tuned into that. Not to mention the labor disputes might have had some impact.

You're right.
I meant to say neither team had ever won the Series, and since Anaheim had never been, the two thoughts must have overloaded my brain. :)
