View Full Version : HOSTING PBEM NOW (Oct. 30)
Richard III Oct 30, 2002, 05:13 PM Ok, I've got it, it's tested, and I'm not waiting any longer. While I will try the hated Gamespy in a minute, I have a free day tomorrow (largely) and I have a free night tonight, so, if four players want to take a crack at PBEM this evening at a regent or monarch level game (I'm willing to go down, but not up from that), place your ballots below and we'll get started.
Once we have the four, we can PM e-mails and move from there (I'd post the e-mail now, but apparently spam bots are searching sites for addresses these days).
Since we're pioneers and all, I suspect we can pretty much pick whatever civ we want... my prefs are for the Celts, Aztecs or English; standard or regicide; whichever of the two wins the most votes gets it.

KaNick Oct 30, 2002, 07:24 PM Richard I would love to play a game PBEM, but unfortunatley I have to make a presentation on modern art and how it ties into existentialism that is due tomorrow. (maybe Ishould start it now, nah.) Maybe some other time.
Sultan Bhargash Oct 30, 2002, 08:54 PM Richard III I am in and I know Joespaniel wants in on PBEm (he wanted this weekend... but dammit,... lets start)
joespaniel Oct 30, 2002, 08:58 PM I am DEFFINATELY up for one. But...
Have to work a double-shift tomorow.
How about this: I am free starting early Friday afternoon all the way til Monday. Care to start a second one then?
cgannon64 Oct 30, 2002, 09:09 PM I'm in, I will definetely (barring GameStop not having it) get PTW tomorrow. I'm up for a PBEM, but we should try to all be online together, to make it go MUCH faster. I'll PM my email to all of you now, and I hope to hear from you.
BTW, I call Celts, Carthaginians, or Vikings, whichever.
CG
Sultan Bhargash Oct 30, 2002, 09:10 PM Yes: this should now become the rapid fire PBEM for the weekend thread (right?).
Has anybody tried PBEM to figure out how it works? I guess having email would help? I am going to PM Richard III and JoeSpaniel to get that going, and anyone else who wants in should Email one of us three...
or we just split Saddam's treasure between us...

I don't call hours of crashing over and over "making it much faster".
cgannon64 Oct 30, 2002, 09:17 PM Hey, should we swap IMs, b/c diplomacy is MUCH easier with instant messaging.
CG
Sultan Bhargash Oct 30, 2002, 09:33 PM I have cgannon's email now, and am passing that along with mine to RIII and joespaniel.
Here is what we need to establish: who will host/admin/gofirst? that person needs to know what civs we want to be.
Since we go PBEM I suggest doing up a long range game?
joespaniel Oct 30, 2002, 09:34 PM What IM do you use? I really should get one... :mischief:
Edit: Link removed
Sultan Bhargash Oct 30, 2002, 09:38 PM I passed mine and cgannon's along to RIII. Not ready to give it out to the masses but I will PM you joe.
What is an IM?
Richard III Oct 30, 2002, 09:49 PM Sultan, they mean internet messenger (as in Netscape AOL messenger or Windows Messenger, both of which are free)
Well, good, we have four. Tell ya'll what. I will start one game with Sultan tonight, and then we'll try to get through as many turns as possible of a second fuller game over the weekend?
Praying PBEM is saner than the alternatives...

Instant Messenger. You can chat back and forth in near real time, unlike these boards, which are delayed.
Sultan Bhargash Oct 30, 2002, 09:50 PM Nice! I currently don't have an instant messager (I really hate that sort of thing, please don't make me load one). But I am off to look for the email, Richard!
joespaniel Oct 30, 2002, 09:53 PM @ R III
I sent you a PM with my E-mail, I just need yours and then I have everyone.
I will start a thread in this forum, for our summaries and general spam. ;)
What shall we name it? :hmm:
joespaniel Oct 30, 2002, 09:58 PM btw - I am REALLY looking forward to this.
I used to play chess over the Internet years ago, some games lasted almost a month!
Hopefully, it wont go that long...;)
Glad to be a part

Richard III Oct 30, 2002, 09:59 PM Call it the Pioneer PBEM game.
What civ do you want, joe?
sylvr Oct 30, 2002, 10:01 PM Anyone know about how long the regicide scenario takes for a turnless game? How long have some of the capture the princess / city games tended to take?
joespaniel Oct 30, 2002, 10:03 PM Pioneer it is. Good call.
If no one minds, I'll play the Germans.

sylvr - Firstly, welcome to CFC. :)
We all got the game today, so we'll let you know when we find out. ;)
Regicide is good if you want a fast game. Take out the King and its over.
Richard III Oct 30, 2002, 10:16 PM Ok, Joe, Germans it is. I've just started a test match with Sultan, and foolishly named it Pioneer, but we will be sure to change the name of the sav. file before I get the Friday morning edition underway.
I look forward to stealing that big pointy helmet off your bald german head! (although I think we should make it a normal game)
R.III
Sultan Bhargash Oct 30, 2002, 10:18 PM Elimination seems the most interesting to me - must defend cities, must build walls, might even try building an outpost in that mode!
paying attention RIII - me India, Joe Germany... I wait the game...

Enjoy your first PBEM! :goodjob:
I am looking forward to the "big one" on Friday.

Bah! The clever and industrious German folk do not fear you! http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/joespanielsmile.gif
Post here with all the info, who's who (civ-wise), and I will start the Pioneer thread.
Octavian X Oct 30, 2002, 10:47 PM You guys want to put off the game till my copy of PTW arrives on the fifth?
joespaniel Oct 30, 2002, 10:54 PM NO!
But, anytime you need a player, just PM me. ;) :)
Ordered from Amazon, eh?
KaNick Oct 30, 2002, 11:43 PM I'll play if it will be friday. I'll be Egypt. I'd say go with a standard game. My E-Mail should be accesable by clicking on that email like above the post.
Richard III Oct 31, 2002, 06:22 AM Ok then, joe, we're looking at:
"Pioneer I PBEM"
- Standard game (I know Sultan wanted elimination, but the pangea should take care of that...)
- Pangea (it's our first game, let's make it interesting)
- 4 billion years
- All victories enabled, no kings/regicide
- At Sultan's request, accelerated production (which makes me nervous about the impact on medieval gameplay, but whatever)
Players:
Richard III - England (a nostalgic decision I will no doubt regret)
Sultan Bhargash - India
Cgannon64 - Celts
Joespanial - Germany
Grandmasta Nick - Egypt
I will place everyone in that sequence; if any other players can commit to rapid turnarounds this weekend, post here and we might let you in before joe starts the thread ;) If not, the AI players will be randomized.
And if you do so, please be sure to let me know how to e-mail you via my PM.
R.III
cgannon64 Oct 31, 2002, 01:07 PM I don't have my copy of PTW yet, b/c damn GameStop wouldn't let me, a minor, sell a game to raise the money. So I have to wait until my mom gets home, but I'll have it in like half an hour.
I've never played an Accelerated game, this should be interesting!

KaNick Oct 31, 2002, 03:26 PM My e-mail is nick_r_420@yahoo.com. I was just wondering what kind of IMs people were planning on using, i have AIM but can download whatever.

conmcb25 Oct 31, 2002, 04:25 PM Gentlemen
I have been playing PBEM steady in the CIV II forum for a few months now, and its great! Much better going up against humans vice a dumb AI.
A suggestion I would have for you is to discuss with your moderator a separate sub forum under multiplayer for PBEM. That way all the PBEM'ers will know where to go. Seems to work well for the CIV II gang.
After I get PTW I might join you for a game, has anyone looked at the editors?, Will scenario making be a reality?
Happy CIVing
:D
Sultan Bhargash Oct 31, 2002, 05:50 PM I wrote this before but the server filled and didnt let me post it:
Don't fear accelerated production. I started using it as soon as soon as the 1.29 patch came out,and I have never looked back.
It doesn't change the proportion of the eras at all, but instead of sitting and waiting 30 turns to build a temple you pop out more units and thus early warfare has more options, and the turns are more interesting because there is more going on.
And we get to the modern era about a thousand years faster. But they are very full years... full of warfare...
KaNick Oct 31, 2002, 06:35 PM AP sounds fine to me. It is about the only option for MP otherwise the games would just take way too long.

Yes, yes. I found that to be the case. Yum. :D
Knight-Dragon Oct 31, 2002, 07:52 PM Someone pls post something like a general report on how the game goes. I'm fairly interested to see how this game turns out i.e. who's leading, who's declining etc. :D
Sultan Bhargash Oct 31, 2002, 08:43 PM All too happy to turn this into a thread describing the game. However, you will probably have to wait till there is enough mutual contact that our reports dont give anything away.
I'd like to add I am excited to be in this group with this gang and can't wait to get it going...
joespaniel Oct 31, 2002, 11:27 PM @ R III and SB -
So how did your "test run" go?
Any problems?
Anybody get beat beyond all recognition?
Sultan Bhargash Oct 31, 2002, 11:42 PM Our test run, done late night wednesday, consisted of RIII taking a turn, mailing me the game, me taking a turn which included building a city, and then both of us giving up that particular game because it was just two of us and it was late at night and PBEM does require a bit of stopping and starting the game...
Much like our one online experience together, actually!
joespaniel Nov 01, 2002, 12:14 AM Well, at least it works. ;)
I was playing the Carthaginians a little tonight, and I think they may be my favorite of the new civs. I like the ind-com attributes (but hate France :p ), and the UU is VERY nice! :goodjob:
I am going to try all of them eventualy.
Looking forward to starting tomorow. :)

You should try Korea. That Hwach'a is underestimated by the public; it has the same bombard strength as artillery, but in the late middle ages. Can be VERY useful in the early industrial. Scientific too, one of the traits I like.
Anyway, when are we going to get this one started??? I feel like playing a MP game more than three turns...but don't get me into my dreadful experience...;)

Richard III Nov 01, 2002, 07:16 AM WE ARE GOING GOLD!!!
I have just got rid of my girlfriend for the morning, booted up and we're ready.
Wildfire444 will be joining us as Persia.
First step is I will e-mail everyone right now with all the e-mail addresses and then play that turn. Will send it out in order of joining, so Wildfire and co, you should be getting something later this morning or afternoon, and hopefully we can move at light speed
Remember to check the manual. You will all need a password and so on, and please e-mail me if you need a recess of any sort.
Re: Knight-dragon's request for info, I will do myself in and try to offer as much play-by-play, screenshots (I finally figured out how, duh!), musings and stories from my perspective as possible. Yes, this will make it easier for people to beat me, but hey - I'm playing the English, and gentlemen don't read other gentlemen's mail, right? I will, however, do this from a different thread so people can follow it more easily.
R.III
Richard III Nov 01, 2002, 07:33 AM Whoops, no e-mail address for Wildfire444. If you can check your e-mail, Wildfire, and respond, I will forward that to all players. I sent you my address. Since you start last, we probably have a few hours before it's a problem.
R.III
cgannon64 Nov 01, 2002, 07:37 AM I have a question: if one is eliminated from a PBEM game, is there any way to follow it in-game? I'd rather not just read from the sidelines...
But of course, I'll be doing the eliminating!!! :D
CG
Edgar Newt Nov 01, 2002, 07:28 PM Once eliminated, you could request to be bcc-ed the game (with eliminator's password) so that you could at least keep track of the party that assimilated you.
