View Full Version : Civ 5 Art Competition
ainwood Feb 19, 2010, 02:47 PM OK - this is pretty minor, but might be some fun for the artistic amongst you.
We have emoticons / icons for the other Civ releases:
Civ 1 [civ1]
Civ 2[civ2]
Civ 3[civ3]
Play The World [ptw]
Conquests[c3c]
Civ 3 Mac. [civ3mac]
Civ 4 [civ4]
Warlords [c4w]
Beyond the Sword :bts:
Test Of Time [tot]
(no Call to Power, or Alpha Centuri though.)
Anyway: Based on the screenshots and artwork for Civ 5 released to date, I would invite people to create a small icon for CFC to use for Civ 5.
Rules:
Must be a .GIF file.
Must be no more than 28 x 12 pixels.
Entries should be posted in this thread, and we'll then have a vote for the best. The best entry will be adopted as the post icon for Civ 5, and used at least until the official launch of Civ 5.
Abaddon Feb 19, 2010, 08:08 PM For each civ version, we have little icons:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/icons/c3c.gif
http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/smilies/civ4bts_icon.png
I think I made the BtS one.. can't remeber..
Now is the time to make a cIV icon.
Please, submit your attempts :)
Here is my first:

Thunderfall Feb 19, 2010, 08:28 PM Cool. :) Hope to see some nice entries!
ancestral Feb 19, 2010, 09:30 PM Alright, here's my first submission.
http://mproud.com/images/civv1.gif
And then I thought, you know, the V is so iconic… why not just make it a giant V?
So here's number two.
http://mproud.com/images/civv2.gif
Couple of notes:
The Civilization logo appears to be using the Futura typeface, perhaps a specific version just for capitals, though likely it's slightly modified. (You can see the curvature of the finials on the capital C and you'll notice they curve in more than a Futura capital C.) I typed the first image in Futura.
Also, this is a bit crude, but if someone wants to start with the 'V' found in the logo, here ya go (it's far from perfect). This is what I used before resizing and making small alterations in the second image.
http://mproud.com/images/large-v.png
ainwood Feb 19, 2010, 09:57 PM If people want to post a larger version that can then be shrunk-down, that could be worthwhile.
Souron Feb 19, 2010, 10:23 PM Here's something quick:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=243635&stc=1&d=1266643374
RedRalph Feb 20, 2010, 03:14 AM I like Ancestral's 'V'
Wessel V1 Feb 20, 2010, 05:00 AM 243664Just did a short drawing.
f35acepilot Feb 20, 2010, 05:03 AM Alright, here's two. I put the V separate from the CIV to hopefully avoid confusion with civ4. I also made one with a 5, if you prefer that. Question: Will all the icons be in the vote, or will you choose a few?
Agrippa Feb 20, 2010, 07:25 AM Something like this, for a small pic I like it simple:
civplayah Feb 20, 2010, 07:32 AM I like either f35acepilot's civ 5, or agrippa's icon.
Fifty Feb 20, 2010, 08:54 AM Its a 5 with a smile and a frown on either side to represent the yin and yang inherent in every game of Sid Meiererer's Civilization 5 the Video Game.

Chimera1804 Feb 20, 2010, 09:51 AM Here's one i did...
EDIT: Ah dang, thought it was 28x14, not 28x12...
Chimera1804 Feb 20, 2010, 09:59 AM Sorry for double post...reuploading my image...28x12 this time....
Joecoolyo Feb 20, 2010, 02:15 PM My vote goes towards either ancestral or Agrippa.
Franks Feb 20, 2010, 02:26 PM I like the V alone.
_random_ Feb 20, 2010, 04:56 PM Agrippa, Wessel, Fifty, and Ancestral all made really good ones.
King Flevance Feb 20, 2010, 04:57 PM I also like the V alone.
MeteorPunch Feb 20, 2010, 05:40 PM I like f35acepilot's CIV5. Here's two that are slightly different from each other:
Chimera1804 Feb 20, 2010, 06:04 PM I actually really like Meteor's second one...it gets my vote if there is a vote to be held...
warpstorm Feb 20, 2010, 08:58 PM I like ancestral's V.
Onionsoilder Feb 20, 2010, 09:16 PM A few different ones... same style, different letters.
playshogi Feb 20, 2010, 09:37 PM If I were an artist, I'd put a hexagon into the design.
davidtylr Feb 21, 2010, 12:36 AM Here is a few ideas i've been fiddling around with

phungus420 Feb 21, 2010, 04:20 AM Best so far:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8917472&postcount=10
The V could be more detailed though, like the V from this post:

Abaddon Feb 21, 2010, 10:53 PM Amazing how different designs people can come up with. Frankly some I think are abyssmal, but others like them!
Taste, a funny one ;)

nzk13 Feb 22, 2010, 11:28 AM I'm inexperienced, but is this one good? I'm attaching it. Don't laugh, this is my first try, only using ms paint.
EDIT: I'm sorry, it's crappy. But can anyone give some constructive criticism to help point out how it could be improved?
Zomgmeister Feb 22, 2010, 02:04 PM My version. Wanted it to be crisp. Anti-aliasing is for weaklings, especially on such small image.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=243839&stc=1&d=1266776795
:goodjob: I like it a lot. My only suggestion would be to make the V a little bit thicker, more like the font used on the title itself.

+1 though I don't mind the V in the original

Sindhforces Feb 23, 2010, 07:34 AM Problem fixed now
embryodead Feb 23, 2010, 09:47 AM Here're my entries, if I had to stick to one It'd be the golden one (3), though the color theme of Civ5 is still a mystery.
MethanalCHO Feb 23, 2010, 12:50 PM I like having the silver "CI" and then the golden "V".
Alpha Centauri is not an official part of the Civilization series, and Call to Power was not made by Firaxis.
axi Feb 23, 2010, 03:34 PM seen at an angle
perhaps we could add perspective to it
Pazyryk Feb 23, 2010, 06:35 PM Here's mine...

sbrylski06 Feb 23, 2010, 09:56 PM I like Dark Jedi06's (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=243935&stc=1&d=1266857325) and embryodead's (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=244043&stc=1&d=1266943396).
Here's my submission, incorporating the new hexagons:

Abaddon Feb 23, 2010, 10:36 PM Embryo, cut up #3 so its just ciV and you have my vote
embryodead Feb 24, 2010, 01:18 AM Alrighty
Civ Fuehrer Feb 24, 2010, 01:47 AM Here's mine, 2nd with a more textured V. 3rd is the more used look most people have been doing that copies cIV trend. 4th has swapped colors that the [civ4] sports.
Mango Elephant Feb 24, 2010, 02:56 PM My favorites would be Ancestrols and Embryodead's gold one
ranger1 Feb 24, 2010, 05:25 PM http://i48.tinypic.com/339nmmq.jpg
ben_the_man Feb 24, 2010, 06:46 PM I like Dark Jedi06's (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=243935&stc=1&d=1266857325) and embryodead's (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=244043&stc=1&d=1266943396).
I agree with this!!!
Could one of you (Dark Jedi06 or embryodead) post a full sized version that I might be able to use as my avatar (I'm new:)
Chimera1804 Feb 24, 2010, 08:30 PM I made a few new ones...the second and third are the same, just the last one is in JPEG format because it doesn't change the color...if anyone could explain to me why saving an image in GIF format causes it to place a bunch of seemingly random colors on the canvas and/or how to avoid this I'd much appreciate it.
Abaddon Feb 24, 2010, 09:29 PM Just shrink my avatar.. job done :D
da_Vinci Feb 24, 2010, 09:49 PM Here's mine, 2nd with a more textured V. 3rd is the more used look most people have been doing that copies cIV trend. 4th has swapped colors that the [civ4] sports. Civ Fuehrer is close to my design concept shown below. Not very artistic, as I don't have those skills, but see if we can tuck the CI into a large V in a more aesthetically pleasing fashion than what I have below
Notes: This was a Castellar font at 72 size, in 200%, 300% and 400% horizontal stretch to generate the various V's. The 400% stretch is probably too much, the 200% not enough.
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu306/daVinci02/Civ5logo3versions.jpg
Of course, anything with a large "V" has appeal to me!
dV
liquid fire Feb 24, 2010, 10:34 PM Something like this, for a small pic I like it simple:
I think Agrippa's is spot on: it's clean, elegant, and civ-worthy. The colors differentiate the Civ from the V. And the font reminds me of the brush strokes of chinese characters in a copy of the tao te ching I had years ago
da_Vinci Feb 25, 2010, 05:35 AM Thought I would collect some that I like in one place, and comment ...
Alright, here's my first submission.
http://mproud.com/images/civv1.gif
And then I thought, you know, the V is so iconic… why not just make it a giant V?
So here's number two.
http://mproud.com/images/civv2.gif I think Ancestral's first one may look too much like our current Civ IV icon, but I do like the idea of the Civ V icon having a large and dominant V, as his second idea does.
Something like this, for a small pic I like it simple: By making the C and I much smaller than the V, I think Agrippa avoids looking too much like the Civ IV icon. But are there other options for the placement of the C and the I? I think having two V's is redundant and a 5 is not classical enough, so those designs are not my favorites.
I like f35acepilot's CIV5. Here's two that are slightly different from each other: A different version of the lone, large V. Could stand alone, or could have smaller C and I added in some manner.
HEre's mine -http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/3164/rsz2civ5.gif Hmm ... domimant V with a globe instead of C and I ... I like the novelty.
How's this?
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=243839&stc=1&d=1266776795 The large V in a hex ... how would that look with a small C and I? Maybe one on each side ... see below.
Here's mine...
244111 This one caught my eye ... the second v is redundant, but what if the I were moved to the right of the dominant V, to generate CVI? The large "last name" inital in the center is a typical monogram style, and the I could be changed to another identifier for each expansion pack as they come out.
Here's mine, 2nd with a more textured V. 3rd is the more used look most people have been doing that copies cIV trend. 4th has swapped colors that the [civ4] sports. Civ Fuehrer's first two are a template for my CI inside the V idea ... if he removes his redunant small v, and centers his CI in the notch of the broad, large V, what would that look like?
I made a few new ones...the second and third are the same, just the last one is in JPEG format because it doesn't change the color...if anyone could explain to me why saving an image in GIF format causes it to place a bunch of seemingly random colors on the canvas and/or how to avoid this I'd much appreciate it. How would this look with less horizontal stretch, and a small C and I on each side? (You see my theme here, how can we implement a CVI idea?)
Nice work, everyone! :goodjob:

Gamemaster77 Feb 25, 2010, 06:44 AM This looks cool, I look forward to posting an icon.

CivOtaku Feb 25, 2010, 07:14 AM I agree with da_vinci, someone make one with CVI in the middle of a hex. The V should be like the one in the Civilization 5 logo.
EDIT: Great work Chimera! I like your first one the most.
da_Vinci Feb 25, 2010, 07:45 AM Like this?
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=244263&stc=1&d=1267106831 That's the idea, thanks!
I played with putting in the C and I...again I've got the jpeg and gif... Hmm ... looks like the CI inside the V may be too small to see easily. On the others, try the C in the SW corner, and maybe the C and I a touch larger?
I agree with da_vinci, someone make one with CVI in the middle of a hex. The V should be like the one in the Civilization 5 logo. Ahh ... the whole CVI inside a hex, nice thought!

Alfa Romulus Feb 25, 2010, 08:13 AM I just registered especially to post my little emoticon!
I've been lurking at this site for a long time though.
Well here it is, i like the idea of using the hexagon thing and using the civ's V as a roman 5.
My idea was to use one hexagon for the C and the I and use a second hexagon to contain the V.
I quickly made it in paint so it's a bit rough and needs to be perfected...
axi Feb 25, 2010, 09:21 AM where V is formed as a border between two civs...

axi Feb 25, 2010, 10:51 AM Could a C and an I fit in those top two hexes?
I tried it, but it didn't look so good.
I also made one with more tiles, where a V is formed from a peninsula of plains tiles inside water tiles (and with a few forest tiles on top). It needs more pixels to look good however.
Chimera1804 Feb 25, 2010, 11:03 AM Hmm ... looks like the CI inside the V may be too small to see easily. On the others, try the C in the SW corner, and maybe the C and I a touch larger?
I tried having them larger...unfortunately any larger and it looks disproportionate...we've only got twleve vertical pixels...
Pazyryk Feb 25, 2010, 11:16 AM Just an alternative to my post above. I think I like the V in the middle better, though.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=244298&stc=1&d=1267121737 Thanks for the revisions ... maybe on the monogram version (center V) go with upper case C and I, sized appropirately of course ;).
Made two more, one with the Civ 5 'v' and one with your 'v' though I think the latter could use a little more touching up. Ah, you have restored my faith in the CI inside the V idea ... I think it is a busy enough concept that sans serif fonts are in order, as in your first one.
Along the lines of thinking below, try going back to the first one in your first post, take out the small v and have the CI centered vertically (as it already is) and horizontally ... without worrying about squeezing it into the notch of the V.
Gave it another go based on what some members wanted to see...

Civ Fuehrer Feb 25, 2010, 10:07 PM Ah, you have restored my faith in the CI inside the V idea ... I think it is a busy enough concept that sans serif fonts are in order, as in your first one.

I did two sized 'CI''s for the horizontal and I think the vertical 'CI' is a tad small to fit, but here it is. I could try diagonal.
Alfa Romulus Feb 26, 2010, 01:51 AM Thanks for the votes everyone! :D
Maybe have a thin black border aournd the C and I, so that they are clearly letters, but Alfa, you are on to something here!
I did do a thin border but made it gold because the background is already black.
It's still in paint though, maybe (if i feel like it) i'll make an improved version this weekend.
da_Vinci Feb 26, 2010, 11:13 AM Thanks for the votes everyone! :D
I did do a thin border but made it gold because the background is already black.
It's still in paint though, maybe (if i feel like it) i'll make an improved version this weekend. My thought was to make the C and the I distinct from the other struts that form the hexes ... so that those two letters stand out a bit. A black border around just the four struts that generate those letters would be fine, even with the black background.
dV
Takhisis Feb 26, 2010, 11:19 AM I won't vote for the hexagonal logo, not noyl to give my own a better chance :p, but because I don't believe that civ5 should be 'civ4+hexagonal tiles'. Just a note, though, as i don't want thi to turn into another discussion on civ5.

new favorite.
ainwood Feb 26, 2010, 05:19 PM Lots of good entries here!
I will close this in around a week - might have to have a round of "play-offs" for the voting.
Barafranca Feb 27, 2010, 12:47 AM My shot at it (see attachment)
I did a superscript "Ci" and a dominant golden V. I underlined the first part so the empty bottom-left corner of the image won't be awkward.
Gamma Feb 27, 2010, 06:57 AM Here's my attempt. I used ancestral's V and added a hex-type background. I also made a second one with 'civ' on one side.
EDIT: see post#101 for my updated images
axi Feb 27, 2010, 09:07 AM Could we perhaps edit the first post to include all icons proposed so far? This way it would be easier to choose.

I did a superscript "Ci" and a dominant golden V. I underlined the first part so the empty bottom-left corner of the image won't be awkward. This solves the problem of a CIV theme logo looking too much like the current Civ IV logo. What if you centered the CI vertically, and had both and underline and an overline above and below the CI? It would fill the space, and the two lines evoke captain's bars (dry force captain, that is), or shoulder boards.
Here's my attempt. I used ancestral's V and added a hex-type background. I also made a second one with 'civ' on one side. A nice new idea ... what about trying a C and and I in the two top corners, or in the two bottom corners, rather than trying to squeeze civ into one corner? I suppose you could look at a diagonal arrangement too.

I assume they'll open up a voting thread once they're done accepting entries, such that we can see all the entries and vote on them. :) If someone does attempt this consolidation, I think the entries fall into some categories or themes:
Use of CI and a separate, larger (or otherwise set apart) V
These include the CIV variants, the CVI variants, and the CI inside the V variants
Use of CIV and a separate, larger (or otherwise set apart) V
These include the CIVV variants and the CIV superimposed on the large V variants
Hex themes
These include V made out of hexes, CIV living amid hexes, and CIV made from the struts of two hexes.
One decision approach might be to vote on the best representative of each theme, then with the best of theme in hand, select among them.

ViniMGS Feb 27, 2010, 06:29 PM It sucks, and it was done on paint.

The V with the background is, imho, the best thus far...

That is my fave.
I also like Dark Jedi06's (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=243935&stc=1&d=1266857325) and embryodead's (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=244043&stc=1&d=1266943396).
But for both I would prefer if they were edited to read just ciV not CivV
BuckyRea Feb 28, 2010, 09:20 AM The first two that CivFurhrer did look pretty good. See this post here

I thought I'd try a different approach. I took that really impressive screen cap from the official Civ5 images released--the one that shows Istanbul and the Haggia Sophia in a medieval setting at sunset, and then shrunk it down to the requested 28x12 dimensions. But that was too big, so I squished it in to 26x12. :D
Then, I added a V, cause everyone else is.
Nitram15 Feb 28, 2010, 12:50 PM A simple Civ 5 logo made with Paint:)

Gamma Mar 01, 2010, 03:18 PM I changed one of mine so it isn't as squished, and edited the other slightly (probably not noticeable, but obvious to me at 800% zoom). I personally like the one with just the V better.

I think that for me, it comes down to these three (the V alone for the hex theme), which I think are the best of the three themes. Of course, for two the image did not quote, but they can be found by the included post links.
It is important to judge how they work in the size they really will be ... as some designs are clever and work well large, but not so well small. I think these three meet the works small test.

ainwood Mar 09, 2010, 10:04 PM Lots of good entries here!
I will close this in around a week - might have to have a round of "play-offs" for the voting.
OK - got a bit held-up.
Entries close in 24 hours. Or thereabouts.
Nitram15 Mar 10, 2010, 04:38 AM Okay, v3. My last version. Very simple. :)
Pizzaspy Mar 10, 2010, 02:38 PM Alright, here's my first submission.

Over in one. The V is perfect.
Cyc Mar 10, 2010, 06:30 PM I agree with the V
Alfa Romulus Mar 11, 2010, 05:23 AM I like the simple ones the best, like the one from Ancestral, with just CiV.
I like them even better then my own . This is because altough the most of them may look nice in a larger size, they don't really look nice in such a small size anymore.
It should be easy to read, and clear to understand that's it's about Civ5.

It should be easy to read, and clear to understand that's it's about Civ5. And not confused with Civ4 icon ... which I think limits some of the CIV motifs.
Now, does it have to be understandable to the whole world, or just to users of this site? For site users, the V alone (with or without hexes) would be clear enough, but not if you think it needs to be clear to "strangers".

Alfa Romulus Mar 11, 2010, 07:41 AM And not confused with Civ4 icon ...
I think the difference between the Civ4 yellow/gold "C" and white "IV", and let's say a white "Ci" and yellow/gold V is clear enough for most people to understand. Even more if you look at the capital "I" of CIV in comparison with the small "i" of CiV...
On the other hand...
Now, does it have to be understandable to the whole world, or just to users of this site? For site users, the V alone (with or without hexes) would be clear enough, but not if you think it needs to be clear to "strangers".
...i do think it should be clear to "strangers" what it means. Of course by strangers i don't mean people who never even heard of Civilization (the game that is :smug:), but i.e. people who never been on this site but know the game. A single "V" would be to cryptic for them in my opinion.
Kid R Mar 11, 2010, 08:40 AM And not confused with Civ4 icon ... which I think limits some of the CIV motifs.
I agree. Going further and looking back at the first post with all the old icons side by side there's a clear contrast between
1: Gold on sky blue
2. Red and yellow on pink
3: Orange on bright blue
4: White and yellow on black
On the strength of that maybe ViniMGS (yellow and red on sky blue), or Nitram15 (white and yellow on silver) would be the most distinctive.
Now, does it have to be understandable to the whole world, or just to users of this site? For site users, the V alone (with or without hexes) would be clear enough, but not if you think it needs to be clear to "strangers".
Going by precedent there's not much of an argument against just a "V" since Civ 1 is the only one containing more than just initials, and in the case of Civ 3 it is just the "III". V is also a nice symmetrical numeral - the last one till Civ X
The Navy Seal Mar 11, 2010, 12:42 PM I was trying to make one I thought it looked great then when I shrunk it down it looked horrid. So I guess I'm gonna stay out of this one. lol
Have fun making them they are looking pretty cool so far!
