Assuming that colonies will be a part of this game, I would like to include my say in how it should be done.... civilization wise. I will explain further but first, I would like to point out all the ideas on the forums saying Canada, Brazil, America, Australia, and Mexico etc should be their own respective civilizations. As it stands today, and I hate to say this, but the only country in all the listed and unlisted colonies here, that is a great world power, really is the USA. Noting that, I believe these "colony civs" should be used only as colonies. However, the USA is such a power in the world that I believe this should not be a standard rule but one you should select at the beginning (like one city challenge, raging barbs) and that these colony civs, with the exception of America, should not appear in the Civ roster at the game setup screen.

Open to suggestion. :dunno: Forgive my poor english.

I'd like to suggest the colony system be abolished.

I think that the historical role colonies have in world history is so important that that would be a mistake. A toggle colonies option would be nice. Better yet just make Civ V a bug free version of the Legends of Revolution mod.

At the moment, colonies just mean "cities on a different land mass". But, realistically, cities on another land mass aren't necessarily colonies, and colonies aren't necessarily have to be on a different continent.

Obviously, we would all like to have colonies that are somehow culturally similar to the mother country in terms of leader and nationality, ie. a whole sub-group of colonies-Civs. Then it would be nice to have the colony-civ gradually grow estranged from your culture depending on a bunch of parameters.

How about a province system?

Ie, as your empire grows, it becomes advantageous to split it into provinces.

The ideal province size grows as technology advances.

You control the "capital" province. This might be limited to 2 cities at the start of the game, but grow in size as the game progresses.

Provinces are managed by a mostly subservient AI -- but provinces can grow more and more independent, be released, or even revolt.

Provinces produce provincial units at your request, and provide you with resources. They also spend some of their own work on whatever the AI chooses...

When you engage in a war, one option is to have the defeated AI become a province of your empire, instead of conquest.

You can soak up cities from a province to grow your capital province as the game progresses. This can be resisted, resented, or rejected...

Colonies then just become far flung provinces of your empire.

Carthage was a Phoenician colony. I think Carthage deserves to be in the game in an expansion pack at least.

Personaly I newer used colonies.
Firstly, I like to keep everything under my strict personal controll.
Secondly I like state property.

Usa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Mexico,...these today great countries could have a place in the game thanks to the colony system. For example, if portugal's far colony becomes independant, it's automatically called "Brazil" with Pedro as a leader?
