I'm back. My problem, gentlemen, is that my productive game playing hours are earlier in the day (9:00am-6:00pm) because I have a life, where Mauiduck isn't even up until 1:00pm EST and Cgannon has to be in bed by... whoops, I'm sorry, I'm taking shots at you because your hours are not under your control!!! I'm so sorry!!! I should be taking out my rage on your helpless cities instead!!! ;) )

Anyway, I'm here, and it looks like there's a turn to play, so I'm playing it. If we are all diligent about checking our mail, we should be able to do two turns a day until next weekend from about tuesday, accounting for the time lag needed to get Maui into such a cycle.

From what I can gather from this thread, Maui is in such a time zone that when it is 10pm here in NYC, it is 4pm in Maui. Thats not a bad lag, he can play when he gets home from school (he's in school, right?).

Anyway, I'm happy you're back, RIII. Is joespaniel in the forum? I'd hate for you to come back, only for the next link to leave...:(

Honestly, I think we'll all be happy to play a turn a day once this gets complicated (although the ambition is for more, obviously). But just think what it will be like when we start sending trade offers.... It's gonna be crazy keeping track.

I am an old hack like RIII, but I have my computer on all the time at work where I have Civ III running on the web server...LOL..seriously I can make it as early as 7:00am my time on the weekends which is noon Eastern Time, same goes for the weekdays. BTW I am 5 hours behind the East Coast (e.g. 1:00PM here is 6:00PM there).

Man! With PBEM i can't see all the moves of the other players, barbs, and AI. I have to miss all of those great moments like when a barb attacks your vilage and take away a pop point plus I have no idea were the other one went to and of course i made the third one pay:evil:. I am suddenly a big fan of expansionism, since rumor has it that I'm the one player to have explored more than a 10 X 10 area and I've latched onto a goody hut or two. As noted above, there have apparently been one or two players who did the same and had some skirmishing in the process.

I don't regard this as a substitute for a real bang-em up game of Real-time Multiplayer, but it looks like it will be good as what I would call a "policy game." Once we reach each other, I fully expect most players to be playing with rational foriegn policies, deceit, declarations of territorial soveriegnty, intelligence gathering, trickery, and alliance building galore. I suspect you'd lose a bit of that flavor in a turnless game, for example, since everyone would be focusing on hitting deadlines instead of on the bigger picture.

And how do I know that flavor will be there if it's only 3400 BC? There's already been a bit of backchannel diplomacy, and consequently I am already aware of forces gradually moving toward each other in a couple of parts of the globe. The anticipation is, um, tingly. Once we have added things worth bartering over to the mix, yum yum.

So, painfully slow though it might be, I am already finding SP boring and hard to play by comparison and I haven't even seen anyone yet .

I've been following some of these PBEM threads intensely, as I can't wait to get PTW myself so I can join in on the fun. It really is quite amusing to read through the progress and the struggle for 'first contact' - only I wish you would all post more pictures (especially as it becomes difficult to remember what is happening in each different PBEM game).

How come you can only get in 3 turns per hour when everyone is together? How large are the savegame files? If you zip the file it shouldn't take up more than 100 kb at this stage at the most, so unless someone has email problems it should be possible to move from person to person within a minute or two. And these early turns can't take more than a minute at most either I figure (alt-tab to avoid spending time reloading). So, in total a max of 3 minutes at each 'stop'... Where am I miscalculating? If I remember correctly, you are 5 players? That's 15 minutes or 4 turns per hour at the very minimum (in theory it should be possible to run 1 minute between stops).

Beats me. In practice, it just doesn't work quite that smoothly. We haven't been zipping files (no need), and if we did, it would probably slow things down more, since it's the "chores" that are the slow part: saving the file somewhere, loading it, saving it, getting the next player's attention, and so on.

I would post more screenshots, but right now doing so may tend to incriminate me... I think I might have good reason to post one in a couple of turns (e.g. at the weekday speed, probably tomorrow morning).

Here is what slows things down: you have to keep checking your email which most of us who play intensely will still only do every minute or so. When the game arrives (and there is a slight delay for some systems like Hotmail) you have to start Civ3 and load the game in and that takes some time. You play your turn, which even at the early stage you would want to be deliberate about, naming units, meeting advisors, etc. YOu save and exit, get your email back up, and mail it. The next dude is probably watching this thread instead of continuously refreshing their inbox, so you come to this thread and post your results and that is when the next guy moves. This is factoring out the ingestion of beer, mismailing the wrong file or forgetting to attach, the "Maui Factor" ;) , the problem that if you are posting to threads you might not see the game fast enough, etc.

It does get frustrating to PBEM online with everyone as last night when I subbed for Gannon I sat thru an hour to make three turns. This phenomena I think has alot to do with the fact that we are all PBEM ing when we would rather play MP online (maybe firaxis will come out with such an expansion some day! ) ; in my mind a PBEM game should be a leisurely affair done hours or a day per move, but in early Civ games that is boring - one more reason mo' better mods need to be in place so we can start off with armies and hordes in place in a meaningful turn.

Agreed, I am looking forward to a one/two turn a day pace this week. Also agreed on the early period, although I have to admit I look at this as a necessary chore for rewards later; the dull workup in the early game will make the experience of, say, losing a city to Grandmasta Nick ( ;) ) that much more meaningful than if it was just some city that some fellow had made in a scenario.

Pity you aren't still covering for the cannon, Sultan; we'd probably have a turn done by 4:00ish then. :)

Sultan: Just set your email program to automatically check for mail every minute (tools->options->general in outlook express), you'll get the little mail icon on the taskbar thingy, so no need to check the mail, it will remind you automatically.

I want to play 'real' online multiplayer too, but I still think that a more streamlined PBEM has its place. If you just keep PTW loaded in the background, you can alt-tab into the game everytime you get that little email pop-up, run a turn, then go back to whatever you were doing. This way you get to play multiplayer civ the 'old style' without a frantic rush (i.e. a timer), while at the same time you won't be sitting ildly about waiting for other players to take their turn because you can just work on other things on the computer in between your own turns.

Good luck on your game, and don't forget the screenshots!

Hey guys I have checked my box and no save. Who was up before me? IMHO I have to agree with RIII that the diplomacy and deal making aspect is much more richer and more realistic with PBEM than with true multi-player. We could use the editor to accelerate production and compress time and make pre-built scenarios but as was mentioned above all the tedious work pays off now when you once tiny hamlet is now the center of the world's financial markets...:)

I played this morning, before going to work, and mailed it to cgannon.

Further scouting with warriors reveals I am not on an island, but likely on the same continent as the rest of you. Perhaps just on an isthmus, or something.

The main thing that slows me down is my hela-slow computer. It takes me about 5 mins. a round and i have three windows open. One for my mail box another for here and one for PTW. So it is the load time that kills me.:(

Civ3 takes up alot of CPU. I think its actually faster to go offline and start up the game, then come back and e-mail. But I have cable, not dial-up.

Sorry for not being here, I just had to press refresh about 50 times to get my way into the forum. There should be some kind of system here where members get in first, and when we approach the unwritten limit of people in the forum, they boot all of those non-members. This way I can actually check up on the game! :D

Anyway, game sent to Nick. Don't bug me about not being here, we already got two turns done, which was our "goal" for a weekday. I'll be here for the rest of the night, save leaving for a quick dinner. I'll just play some civ and alt-tab my way back to check up. 1. No way I am installing outlook express. I have enough problems! But I don't mind hitting my refresh button and last night was actuallly doing so about every three seconds at several points. ALso ALT-TAB does not work for me for some reason (maybe the dreaded curse of windows millenium?)

2. Yeah just joking Gannon, when I had to wake up at 730 this morning I wished I'd been the one in bed early!

3. Tommorow I don't work and will be willing to cover if people here want a real late nighter tonight...

You must have one of the buggier versions of ME, because mine is fine. Actually, its fine with alt-tab. My PTW does crash every once and a while (once a week), I once had to wipe my hard drive because Word would crash my computer...lets see...what else...;) :lol:

I am busy testing my new PTW scenario called Dark Ages Europe so I can keep busy as well. For the curious this PBEM takes place on a huge map of Europe that I modified from the CD to make the resources more realistic. There are 12 nations total with only a max of four being played by the humans: The nations are Celts, English, French, Germans, Spain, Carthage, Rome, Greece, Ottomans, Mongols, Russians, and the Vikings. Every civ starts off in the area they really emerged from. So far it is pretty dang interesting and looking a lot like Europe really did...:)

Maui I had no idea you were such a wildman! Good luck with the mod, hope to see it online when the time comes.

The editor is still too complicated and the units not nearly diverse enough for me to recreate my African Civs mod from Civ2MGE, but one day hopefully they will recreate that excellent folders system (which would allow us to put our saves today into the watercolor terrain if we wanted)

Sorry, cgannon64 is flipping out right now because he just lost more than half of his Numidian Mercenary army to a culture flip to the Aztecs, who seem to have very low culture. cgannon64 thought he was safe, because he had more than 5 times the city's population in Mercenaries guarding against the flip. Our scout warriors were relived of garrison duty by the new recruits and word is that the King is will be able to rapidly finish a new barracks for the capital soon which should bolster our defenses greatly and server as warning to any undiscovered neighbors that we will be heavilly defended...:)

As for custom avatars, you know it is to make room for all the PTW posters that they are disabled, right? I like them alot, I tend to attribute personalities to people based on them - AoA as Hannibal from A Team, Richard III as a painting, Joe Spaniel as either a world war one dog or James Bond, jpowers as the Doonesbury guy, etc. My avatar was the real Sultan Bhargash by the way.

Off to RIII...We have no maps of our lands because we lack the skills of map making...:( It is a great time to be a Persian though as our second city of Pasgarad was started to the south east along the rich coastal farming lands of the continent. Our workers have finished their mine and are prepared to lay more road acorss the capital. Unfortunately our scout warrior discovered a tribe of babrbs posing as an unthreatening village. Our warrior will handle one group while our spearmen should be able to cut them off from destroying the mines in the mountains next to our capital city. Another archer will be forthcoming to help make sure the barbarian threat is eliminated as quickly as possible.

Wow, this is all very interesting. Keep up the details of the game everyone!!

From what I can gather from posts (and from mod posts), I believe I have figured out what Sultan's avatar was. Whoa, Sultan you have guts to use that!!!
