EDITED

This is the Pioneer PBEM Administration thread, for such chores as announcing next player, etc.

If you are an observer who wants to follow the game through screenshots, stories and other events reports, please go to the "We Were Pioneers" Events Thread elsewhere in this Forum.

Interesting, RIII, I always supspected you like to play dress-up! ;)

Were those names you posted in order? Because if they were...Sultan you are up! Sultans online now, I'm positive, so RIII you should find him. I hope we can get several turns in today.

Oh, and RIII, a reminder: when posting screenshots, make sure to cut off the minimap, or else we will know where you are! :mischief:

No, I do NOT like to play dress up.
No, I do NOT like to play dress up.
No, I do NOT...

The names are in order. I just heard from Sultan, and he's at work (an outrage!) but thinks he can get a turn in at 1:30-2:00pmish and start from there, so you'll just have to have a nap to pass the time.

Re: minimaps, that is in fact how I screwed up; I was painting over the minimap, had forgotten to save the pic, and suddenly found I'd done more damage with the paint than I could undo.

Anyway, please get that worker of yours ready, since he's already scheduled to do some maintenance work on my road system :D.

I refuse the deal in advance! Oh, and I just realized, this thread is going to be miles long: at this rate, we'll have about 2000 posts by the end!

Just wondering, is this the place for 'official' diplomatic negotiations? Or do you want to do it by PM, email, etc?

Hey maybe I'll be able to get in a turn or two before I have to leave at 3:30 CT, talk about conflicting schedules. Don't worry i'll be home before 5, and if anyone is on the comp I'll just have to knock them unconscious. Other than that I am unemployed and have no friends:( ;) so i will be open most of the time. Say it with me class "PBEM before real life!"

Guys I am sick to my stomach. I have been trying to attach the game and send it to Joespaniel for an hour, but it crashes my system. I tried hotmail, it crashed. I tried my wife's .edu adress, it crashed. I tried zipping it, it crashed. I cannot do attachments for some reason, a total horror.

I am going to run a virus scan to see if this is a viral problem and otherwise you will have to pioneer without me or have RIII (whose name does come up as RichardIII in the game, by the way) play my turns till I can get in there...

Sultan: Why don't you post it? You could trust the others here not to download it, we'll know if someone did anyway...or you could PM it to Joespaniel.

Something HAS to work...

Here comes my first reply, which I am writing to say that I will try to post it here, you know it doesnt actually matter if anyone else downloads it since my turn is password protected and so what if they did play it out?

I can't post on PM, they dont allow attachments.

I will try to attach it to the next post, I want to post this in case it crashes again when I do the next attachment. If you don't see another message pop up here right away with the attachment it means that I crashed again and it really is a virus in my computer and not some ploy to get me to buy more hotmail space...

Sultan Bhargash
Nov 01, 2002, 02:19 PM
Well, guess what? I cant attach to the forum either without my computer crashing. I am now pretty sure that means it is a virus since not only the SAV file but photos dont post either. I am going to do a complete virus scan and see what comes up. If you guys are eager to start, Richard why don't you make a new game with me out of the loop and mail directly to Joe. If you guys can wait another hour for a further report, it takes a while for me to do virus scans.

This really, really, really, really, really sucks. How long will I be denied multiplayer fun of every kind?

KaNick

We've already waited for a couple of days, a few more hours isn't that big of a deal.

Richard III
Nov 01, 2002, 02:33 PM
Well, sh***y. I have yet to hear from Wildfire either. Let me run an errand, and I will get back by 4:00pm or so. If by then I haven't heard of any change, then I will restart without either Wildfire or Sultan :( , and maybe they can stir up a second game tonight.

(what if I'm the source of the virus? oh well, keep your scanners on...)

Cgcannon, re: negotiations, I would follow the same policy used in AH diplomacy games: anything goes. If you want to negotiate here where we can all see it, that's fine by me :D.

If you guys need another body I'll jump in. I haven't played a lot of Civ3 but I used to play Civ 1 and 2 quite a bit and I've played tons of Warlords 3 and AoW1/2 PBEM style.

Now with PTW I'm ready to give Civ3 MP a serious look. :)

Richard III
Nov 01, 2002, 03:18 PM
Well, as you can see above, Wildfire is in. I will e-mail Sultan and see if we can't figure out what the trouble is, but I will warm up a new game just in case.

@ R III - Look at wildfire's post again, it sounds like he has dropped out. :(
I am led to believe we can set his civ back to AI control, but I'm not sure.

@ SB - Post the saved game here, I will d/l it.

Sultan Bhargash
Nov 01, 2002, 04:19 PM
Start a new game without me. I am officially dropping out. Something is wrong with my computer it will not do attachments and gives me a blue error screen every time I try and has to be ctrl-alt-delete rebooted to get out of it. If anyone has ever heard of such a problem let me know: norton antivirus and scan disk did not pick up anything, but this computer crashes every time it tries to do attachments. Most awful.

Sorry gang. If I get the attacher back I will pass this old game on to Joe (so call your next game Pioneer2 or something) and y'all can play two games at once, otherwise my weekend is sunk in customer service calls.

:( Miss yas, Sultan

Ah crap. :crazyeye:

I dont know what to tell you SB, I've never had that problem nor anything similar. I would bet it has something to do with PTW though. It does NOT sound like a virus at all.

OK, Richard. Command decision time.

Wrong command decision. I sent a NEW game, with Wildfire's name on it, obviously missing his post somehow in the chaos.

you guys have no idea how bad this sucks, seeing these posts and knowing it should have been me!!! I had a great starting position with a hut right there.

Yeah, well I don't think this is PTW based problem - we can't attach photos to our emails and I can't attach anything to civfanatics. I scan disked, nortoned, downloaded upgrades for windows ME, and upgraded to internet explorer 6 - all to no avail.

I have ordered extra memory and put a request for help into dell.

I am ready for an all nighter as well.

One problem: mauiduck doesnt seem to be with us. I sent him a friendly PM to inform him its his turn, but I guess he didnt see it.

Seems these PBEM games might work better with fewer people, who want to play all night. ;)

I am now rethinking doing 8 people in a PBEM. It could be horribly, horribly slow...

Anyway, what do we want to do for tonight? Start a new one with 4 players (Rich, cg, GMN and me)?

Alright, if we all get our act together, we could get off a turn every 5 minutes or so. Until I have to go to bed (with that damn test tomorrow), thats alot of turns!

Before I hit the sack, I'll try to get my turn as last, so you can play all the way up to me. And I'll be free most afternoons/nights this weekend. Hopefully in this SG we can get a huge amount of turns on the weekends to make up for the drag weekdays will be.

I work like a dog during the week, but should be available all weekend for a PBEM game. It might even be a good idea to have two games going (send one -- one way, and the other, the other way, different size maps, etc). That way, later on in the game, each person is only waiting 1/2 of the time they would otherwise wait to make any kind of move. ... I sure this has been said before, but this is all a way of saying I am available starting tonight (give me 1/2 an hour to get home) through the weekend.

I will be offline until then.

Looking forward to it....

For all neutral observers.

I have attached a Top Secret map showing English positions (edited for public consumption), in part to show an apparent graphic bug (see map).

Does anyone have a clue how I can make the process of opening the game more efficient? Is there some way I can keep Civ3 running in a window so I don't have to reload the whole game each time?

R.III

Civ2 ran in a window, allowing you to do other things. Civ3 takes up the whole display.

Here's an idea though. In the rocket-ship screen, you could call up the task bar by hitting the windows key, and try opening your browser.

I'm going to try it now.

And wot exactly is THAT supposed to mean!??

I'm 31 and a retired political hack trying to remake myself as a writer of historical books. I have a palatial home office chock full of wood cabinets, fake 1930s furniture, with a fake 1928 phone and a slew of 1930s posters. My booze is kept in an genuine(1936) radio cabinet to my left. I've switched to beer for a minute, and the bottle looks great under the light of my twin blue bankers lamps.

In other words, old before my time.

Joespaniel is, if I'm not mistaken, a year or so older than me, and Cgcannon is obviously in the 16-19 range. Dunno about our other guests.

I've sent it to Joe. Another good turn. Claimed a vast new territory for His Majesty. Surprisingly, no contact with inferior races, despite a wide search pattern. I guess you all are just running from civilization as fast as you can. I understand: you're afraid, is all.

We should now start to consider when we're restarting in the morrow. I figure Sunday will be the day we make real progress, but between 1:00pm and 5:00ish tomorrow we should be able to get a few turns in, eh? When is that exam of Cannon's?

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Change of plans for me. The test ends at 3, but its in Manhattan, so I'll be home around 4:30. I'll also have to leave here at 7:30, because I'm seeing Antigone in modern Greek at some place in Manhattan. So, sorry once again, no all-nighter. I'll be free from 4:30-7:30, though, so we could get alot done in 3 hours!

I'd like to 'officially' announce that I'll be accepting nominations for Vice-President of the Celts, so, in my absence, the VP can take control of the Celtic War Machine. Trip and all the others who demanded playing time in that other PBEM, you could fill in for me, because there will probably be alot of nights where all of you guys want to go all-night and I can't. Just post here, its going to be first come, first serve. And don't let your ego get in the way; you'll probably have as much playing time as me.

As you can see, the process of discovery is proceeding well.

This past year, the King called the first parliament's first session to order. One member was elected to represent the 10,000 residents of London, and one member elected to represent the 10,000 peons working outside it.

Three resolutions were passed.

Government Business Order #1 - The House resolved to research XXXXXXXX by a vote of 2-0 (in camera session)

Government Business Order #2 - The House laid claim to any territories discovered on the expedition of Sir James Cook, except where those territories are already found to be inhabited by civilized races, by a vote of 1 with 1 abstaining.

Government Business Order #3 - The House resolved to pass the Military Levies Act by a vote of 2-0 to provide for the burgeoning armed forces, which some suspect is the largest in the civilized world at this time.

Signed and enacted hereby, HRH, R.III

(appended was the following map of Sir James' most recent discoveries)

Hey Cgannon, if you are going to leave in a half why don't you give your turn to Sultan. It would suck if R III came back minutes after you left and we still couldn't play. If that happened i would have to start a chieften game just to get some frustration out:);)

Alright guys, I'm going to bed. Its 12:18 here, and I'm not waiting any longer for RIII. Don't blame me, he's probably still out at his fundraiser or whatever. I should be free tomorrow afternoon/evening/late night. Hopefully RIII can come and you can play up to me.

Hello! Jesus! I don't recall saying I'd be free at 10, did I?

Yes, I was dreaming of my next move the whole time. But the food was good, unlike any other fundraiser I've been to in some time. Free oysters and everything.

I'll play the turn now, and be up early in the morning to take hits from all of you until the game stops in maui again..

Just to let you guys know, one of the settings on my computer is that the internet shuts down after 12:30. (My mom set this, and I can't change it). So thats my personal limit on all-nighters, although until 12:30 is still a LONG time.

(Sorry, I didn't mean to diss your mom, just her computer policy - and a bloody outrageous policy it is! What would she rather you do, spend all your time drinking and eating at black-tie fundraisers? No foresight among parents these days...)

Nick, I would have posted here telling you to check your mail, but the forum was busy again. I wonder, is everyone here? Hopefully we can get in alot of turns.

My updated status for tonight: around 7-9/10 I have to go. Its my mother's birthday, and we are eating out. Sorry if I'm postponing, but I've had a full weekend guys. All three events (Test, play, birthday) come before Civ. So I'll be free to play until around 7, and then from about 10-11.

Why does this always happen? I'm just about to go out for dinner for a couple of hours and yet the game is lurching my way... I agreed to it in part because it looked like NOTHING would happen for the rest of the day.

The main reason I am going, of course, is to seek counsel, since I am profoundly disturbed by the eerie fact that I have somehow become a bartending veteran in Milwaukee. Quite unexpected :D

I'll post here when I return. Watch your mail, Joe.

OK great....I'm here like I said now that net is working...oh BTW...tried live mulkti-player last night and what a joke.... ;) ... I could host a game but not join one. And even when I hosted the graphics were soooo slow and jerky it reminded me of DonkeyKong circa 1988.......so tahty confirms all the talk that they have a lot to do so it looks like PBEM is the only way to go long distance until the next patch come sout (it will allow non GameSpy hook up svia the Net)...:)

Nick! Check your mail. :D

You know, playing PBEMs really makes you micromanage and think heavily about each decision, knowing you have 5 minutes for every turn. Although, playing PBEMs really makes you hate moving in the wrong direction. I just built my second warrior (screw it! I'll tell you!) for exploration, and I moved him where I realized afterwards that I shouldn't have moved him. Now I have to wait an eternity to move him in the direction I want him to go, thinking about it the whole time while I wait. Torture! ;)

Remember guys, I have to do homework now, but I'll check in every once and a while until my mom's birthday dinner.

PBEM also encourages you to name every unit and rename every city and consult with every advisor every turn because lawd knows you might not see the game again for days!

(And I'm so glad that I didn't hung up in this Pioneer game after all - Covered wagons is more like it!!!)

Nick left? It doesn't matter too much, I'm leaving soon as well. I'll be back tonight.

I have just discovered the beauty of playing Civ and alt-tabbing between it and the forum. I have a great challanging Monarch game going with Carthage on an archipelago. I can only fit four cities in my homeland, and I'm getting ready to start one of many invasions of the other islands. Without Iron, the Numidian Mercenary RULES!!! Anyway, who's after Nick? Maui? I hope both of them come on tonight, or else we'll probably be on turn seven for the whole week...

Maui its heading your way. One more thing to add. I accidentaly got a peek at cgannons save. The good news for cgannon is that i already forgot most of what I saw. It seems that if you open the game from ANY other game it will show the last players turn. I had already heard somthing like this in the bug report but it said you had to load the same PBEM twice in a row. Sorry cgannon, won't happen again. And don't get any ideas maui:)

I'll be here tonight. The reason that I left was that the game had died a while ago so i started playing my personal game. This is my first attempt at emperor and I kind of got drawn in and lost track of time. No real loss, though as R III isn't even here.
