View Full Version : The end to cottages?

Forgive me if this has already been addressed. I haven't seen anything discuss it yet.

I noticed the CV screen shots to date don't show any cottages/villages/towns surrounding the cities, but do have farms and pastures. :goodjob:

I don't like cottages in CIV from an aesthetic point of view, but they were important to build for commerce, and I also liked the idea of certain worked tiles producing more resources after a certain amount of time. But both of these could be addressed in other ways, so I'm hoping that there is more to it than the screen shots just overlooking them for now.

They were a good gameplay mechanic in that you had short term vs. long term to way in relation to choosing them over farms.

I think you guys are over reacting.;) They better not get rid of cottages though.

They don't show nuclear weapons either, but that hardly means that there won't be any in the finished game. The absence of something does not prove anything, particularly in "staged" screenshots such as those.

I think some of you need to understand the concept of speculation.

We do also understand limits of speculation. Hey no offense, speculate all you like, but just a fair question: what do you expect from a thread like this? What can we reply to your original post? We haven't got a slightest bit of information regarding cottages, there's no way whatsoever to base that speculation on anything. Yes, we can confirm that your eyes are all right and there's really no single Cottage in the given screenshots. Other than that..? ;)

Speculation? In an entire forum devoted to the stuff? Nope. Never heard of it.

An easy answer would be to just say that you don't know. Or you could discuss the good or bad of keeping cottages. Or you could not post at all.

Here's a fair question in return: how was I to know that nobody else knew without asking? And another: when I said I hoped that it was more than just not covering them in the screenshot, where did any of you get that I assumed they had to be out?

It's a speculation thread. People were speculating about your speculations :P

You cannot prove a negative. At least until we have the game in hand...

Civilisations in the staged screenshot have yet to discover Pottery, obviously. :p

you can't disprove a negative either

Well actually you can.. say they released more screen shots and cottages were included?

Since I didn't ask for proof, the question of being able to prove a negative would be moot.

I think it goes without saying that we dont know.

I think someone needs to open a seperate thread for the discussion of speculation on speculation as it seems to be getting a bit out of hand here (and not just in this thread!)

I personally hope they do keep cottages. However, it really bothered me in cIV that there were a lot of improvements that were not useful until really late in the game (if at all) and by that point they would lose out to fully developed towns, e.g workshops, watermill, windmill, fort, lumbermill, forest preserve. Hopefully there will be stronger alternative improvements, as at some point in the current game I usually just end up with all my spare workers building cottages everywhere. Having tons of spare workers with nothing to do in the middle part of the game is something else that I find kind of annoying but thats a rant I will save for another thread....
