From time immemorial, the glorious ancestry of the people of Merlot walked the earth, and any patch of grass was a suitable place to rest their weary heads. At night, at their campfires, the elders would entertain the young with stories of their adventures. "When I was a child, my father gave to me this marvelous fruit. These round, purpuly bunches of juice. Oh so sweet they were, I can remember the taste."
Time passed for Merlot and a great leader arose among its people. The nobility recognized this one and with pomp and celebration, the great Indiansmoke became chosen as rightful the King of this wandering tribe.

"My people, we shall wander no longer. Here we are, at the water's edge. On this ground I declare we shall build a great castle, to house the people of Merlot for all time.
King Indiansmoke spoke and it was done.

Moved NE, find yet another wine. Potential for seafood 5N of capitol, can be revealed at turn 50 border pop or sooner. It appears as if the coast is heading south in the fog (to be confirmed next turn) but if so, then we are on a bottlenecking peninsula or an island. Elimination of the Great Lighthouse makes me suspect the latter. Ready to move SE next turn.

The tile 3W 1S of the workerboat is still coast so this could still be either 2 islands or a large inlet. This may be answered with the first workboat move next turn, but it looks like again we have a decision to make, west in between these potential islands or continuing south.
City set to growth and back to warrior. Next turn will work the lake for two turns to reach pop 4. As we gain a gem turn by getting to pop 4 a turn faster, our lost commerce by working the lake over gems will be 1:commerce:
Tic0 May 20, 2010, 05:48 AM I feel knowing the archipelago / pangaia situation has significant planning influence, even in near future. Archipelago = less barb threat on new land masses, moving capitol makes less sense, city packing on our starting island might be different and so on. I'd pursue the westbound path. Additionally we map out more of the closest landmass, which is where we are likely to put our first intercontinental city.
Hercules90 May 20, 2010, 03:58 PM I would second the west bound path, if for no other reason than to know if it is an inlet or not.
Edit: My apologies sire.

I think we should set up a 2 pop whip in this city as it is working 2 unimproved tiles. It will gain 1 tile back immediately I believe. Please discuss in the appropriate thread.
Fktor Aug 10, 2010, 12:12 PM Holkan continues the journey, archer unloaded at circus just in time to witness a granary whipping.
EDIT: Holkan loaded onto the galley.
I also switched one of the corns in the capital to the new cottage, since capital is at happy cap and permission to whip has been denied.
Royal baths could use the corn, but they don't have any more improved tiles and have been whipped recently, so I left them working the 4h mine.

Next turn the borders pop in circus so at the beginning of their turn they'll know of our city (and by the end of the turn they can know whether it's fresh or not). I realign the troops as prescribed, by pull the warrior back. I think the best defensive is to put the warrior on our mined hill - he'll be at 5% fortify just barely getting us the +50% odds against the first strike from across the river.

So Amazon had a combat I immortal where our chariot is. Our chariot could promote to 3.7 (93/100hp) and we had a 4.07 v 4.4 battle (it was ~33%). Those things get defensive bonus so i sure didn't want to to get to our jungle, it would have forced out a spear (maybe even pre-granary) which we desperately need to be something else. Our chariot was good as dead up in the Q/CDZ penisula so I declared war and threw it at amazon. I doubt it gets any farther, wouldn't suuprise me at all if another immortal kills it before next turn
I thought I got the Merlot shots but i guess not. The amazon army was missing from the city (only two xbows there) and the trireme (got to get that out of there soon with the many turns they've had optics now) checked the desert tile W of the city (not there) so they have to be in the jungle NE of their city or on galleys up their cove. Likely jungle which will be confirmed next turn.
Merlot finished Construction (likely HBR next) and somebody got Philo & taoism on the other side.

For the bottom one, they're on the tile marked "12" and they also have the 3 caravels coming in to complicate our mainland-island galley suplly chain we had going. I could have sent the xbow and holkan in the capital on the last galley ride to the mainland but I chose to keep them put. Looks like the island and colony are separated from here on out.

So I move the unpromoted xbow out of the city leaving just the combat I CG I xbow alone defending the city. Everything else is 1S of Sangre, and the un-labels xbow following our main stack is 3 units, 1 xbow 1 holkan 1 cat.
And it should be noted that AMAZON is running significant espionage against us, i suspect the main reason for this is to gain visibility of our cities, very useful for galleon based attacks. But as things stand now, they have like 400 EP to our 150 EP and we've been going all non-slider espionage at only amazon for a good while now (we spilt it with them and CDZ in the very beginning) so for them to get so much on us they've been dipping into the slider. We cannot even see their demographics they have so much.
And you can see I made a mistake with the trireme. Soon as i clicked it I knew i should have checked it against the caravels and lo and behold it ended a tile in range

I went in the city. I also put the 3 trailing units were the stack was; they can be attacked by the immortals and it was meant as a little bit of a tease but I seriously doubt they'd go there based on their past moves. The two workers (that last turn were pre-chopping in defense of Turnpike, my how things can change) i put in the city as sort of a "we can road to you so fight us or get out" gesture, I think their only choices are to fight or go NW/N/NE and I expect them to go one of those.
We have 4 workers in the area, the other two worker were place on the hills intending to road the turn before snaaty mentioned. At the time that road was more thinking along the lines of bailing straight for their canal city, but I went ahead with it anyway. Even though we're a little short on roads we do have 4 workers there - roads can come in an instant and they will. If they go N then those workers will probably build the road 1S sangre (though I'm tempted to move everything to where amazon is now, cow after all, workers included, if they go N.
Again the main (one of the main, anyway, the other being that xbows don't do too well against rifles) problem here strategically is that they have so much espionage they have visibility on all of us. Everything has to be done with that in mind. Which I think sets in concrete the fact that Mav has to attack amazon.

Much less pressure here navally (doubt that's a word) so the island-mainland ferry is up and running, (for now) loaded mace & xbow this turn. The dutch caravel is wrapping around our island coast which reminds me I gotta get that dutch power graph.
Other than that same old, same old, and I gotta start whipping some more UU (though the second of three is ready to get on the next galley next turn - there 2 galley where it is shown, both 2 turns from hiding in Copper City).

So that pretty much sums it up, the battle couldn't have gone any better. Only two losses for 12 wins and their entire stack dead. Both maces, all immortals and i think only 1 cat were unpromoted, so pretty sorry work by AMAZON on that one. Battle went:

C1 xbow v xbow, 6.6 v 6.0, 68.1%, win
C1 xbow v immortal, 6.6 v 6.0, 73.8% (first strike), win

xbow v mace, 6.0 v 5.33, 75.1%, lose

xbow v cat, 6.0 v 5.0, 78.3%, win
xbow v cat, 6.0 v 5.0, 78.3%, win

archer v wounded cat, 3.0 v 2.0, 93.6%, win
holkan v wounded mace, 4.0 v 1.92, 95.9%, win
The last two battle I used weaker units than what I could have to try and get more experience (although the last holkan battle only yeilded 1xp, i'm used to 99.1% being the cutoff, albeit he did end up next to a barb warrior so maybe he will get that 2nd xp.
Extra units went back towards circus and such and I can't say that I saw any galleons hovering around to pick those units up.

I played the mav turn first and decided to hold up a turn with the lead stack after seeing theirs. It's all looking real close. We can count on for sure one more mace and xbow from them which I'm pretty sure are in bookburner. I'm not sure where this other galleon came from, i think it may have brought the cats and then got placed coming back towards their city as sort of a fake out I don't think it came way out from around the south of merlot island. Even if there are 3 more units on nabaxio's pride I'd rather take that then walls going up in nabaxia. If walls go up I think we pretty much have to run back to our cities and play defense only. Playing defense is probably what we should be doing in terms of slowing down our eventual demise but that's no fun, so here's our (last) act of desperation. If they don't get the walss up maybe we do something but the mav stack likely gets creamed.
Since this turn was made the Dutch took a Mav city, most likely Jumbo, the one guarded by the single chariot. They showed up at the worst time; not quite enough hammers or pop into the mace to get it whipped. All trailing units had to scramble to cover the other cities and we'll see how mauch landed. But then this isn't the first time this desperate play towards nabaxia has opened us up elsewhere.

So the whip is most likely the walls. That and the fact that they can dump those 5 jungle units into the city means there's no way we can take it. It looks so bad that that if you look at the merlot units, they have no where to go - if they head back to our cities the galleons can get them there first. Attacking would be suicide and promote them, deleting our units off the map is a serious option to consider that only gets beaten out by staying put in the jungle, hoping to pin down as many amazon units to that city as possible. The Mav army probably has to turn and run, if it gets to live that long.
We also have another amazon landing and now CDZ is on the scene

didn't make it to worldbuilder, just thought it over and plans sorta changed once it started going. The cat took the CG xbow way down to like 2.4 and I braved the archer fight which luckily took the elephant to 7.0 and from there I had favorable battles so from there just went down the line. Win some lose some. I took the bad holkan battle to lessen any units that can go at the mav units. I was able to promote the remaining after the turn flip but with them being charismatic some of theirs may get double promoted. But like i said, If they don't reinforce and we get to use the mav units this may get interesting.

Merlot & Mav
So as predicted, last turn was the high water mark. It's all downhill from here. stick a fork in us we're done. Here's what happened.
Starting out from the mav side:
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0698.jpg
They didn't touch the mav units. But they did reinforce the city. I don't have shots of what we had exactly, everything being wounded and all. I thought I saw some kills I could get in that amazon stack. Some things were coming out real close, like the combat 3 promotion would make this particular match up slightly tolerable when without it it wouldn't be. With all the units busted up I knew I'd never get another chance so in a rush I went for it.
(our unit, theirs, # v #, our odds, our result)
On the mav side, first went
cat v xbow, 5 v 6.37, 42.8%, withdrawal
WE v Pike, 9.6 v 12.4, 23.5%, lose
mace v xbow, 8.8 v 10.10, 24.0%, lose
and then over to Merlot troops,
xbow v xbow, 3.82 v 6, 4.4%, lose
xbow v xbow, 6.33 v 6, 53.4%, lose
xbow v xbow, 5.3 v 4.83, 51.3%, lose
mace v xbow, 6.72 v 5.4, 68.6%, win
axe v xbow, 4.23 v 4.52, 38.7%, lose
and then after that all that was left was a holkan and an axe who were getting horiible odds, so from there it was retreat. In hindsight, I could have done things better, for example, the cat should have been barrage II instead of city raider II, that cost me dearly, and then there was no need to sacrifice the WE on the pike, and then the first Merlot battle, where I tried to soften up the lead defender, I picked a bad unit to do so (it took off no damage by the way). I know the numbers I give mean something but aren't truest description of how the battles go. That first xbow for example, started at 37/100HP and got killed with two 21HP strikes. If it had at least 43/100HP it would have survived the first two ready for a third but as is he didn't have enough to survive that second hit. I'm sure my attacks could have been more meticulously calculated than they were so alas...
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0704.jpg
So that's how they were as I left. That macemen, along with the withdrawing cat from mave were deleted.
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0706.jpg
On the mav side:
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0699.jpg
The Dutch have landed. But not the most fearsome stack. All I needed to do was promote a mace to shock and he would get winning odds
mace v mace, 8.8 v 8, 68.1%, win
And then they'd be left with 4 units attcking 5; no matter how well all that seige did, they couldn't take the city.

On the Mav side the Dutch troops went back in their ships. But it their place is now a Carthage stack, and where the dutch bring too many seige the carthaginians bring too few. At least it appears our enemies aren't working together to facilitate our destruction, there is still competition amongst our foes as to who earns what.

The 4 workers I had on the mainland some turns ago, well, 3 of them were taken when the amazon, WE + xbow stack landed, the fourth one had limited options with all the amazon/cdz units about so all he was able to do was to "scout new lands". I was hoping to at least run him up the coast but he got himself found.

So this is what happened. There was only the one xbow from last turn in the city plus the one more being built. Despite my running away, they bomb the city's culture with a spy. 2 trebs withdrawl, and then 2 maces win vs our 2 xbow. This is their stack in our city. I attack.
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0753.jpg
All battles were above 50% odds. Combat II xbows lead then mace and when vercinget. popped I decided, largely because theocracy made 7exp troops somewhat un-appealing, to just attach to a xbow from Iron city to be promoted morale to handle half the pikes and thus clear the way for mounted (WE won luckily from there, unexpectedly). I could have taken the city with the last HA that wasn't used but would lost to them with only HA defending. I fully expect them to drop 4 fresh troops in injiya and attack our attacking stack so troops were transfered from gold city to help defend (but probably not enough).
And also of huge consequence is carthage deny us iron. once it's pillaged next turn all we got is cat/archer, so we'll need to hit Feud fast. (in hindsight, iron was much more important than retaking our city. wups.)

They moved 1NE from our iron tile, no picture but they were 2 crossbow, one of which at Guerilla II, but nothing else was really promoted aside from maybe one city raider (and much unpromoted as it was taken down). We had 4 cats available all w/ 2 promotions and I knew I really wanted to get our cats to face the maces, using the 10% v melee. First cat went in, no damage to the GII xbow. Second cat, same thing. In hindsight I should have done what I did next first, but oh well. Next went a sacrificial combat I/Cover xbow vs their GII and it did great, losing but taking it down to 1.9 (32/100hp). From there our last two cats died but got to use the 10% v melee and it was simple from there. Overall it went
(our unit v theirs, our # v theirs, our odds, our result)
cat v xbow, 5 v 10.5, 2.3%, lose
cat v xbow, 5 v 10.5, 2.3%, lose
xbow v xbow, 6.6 v 9, 20.9%, lose

Vercingetorix v mace, 7.2 v 4.09, 98.2%, win
mace v xbow, 7.21 v 4.32, 90.1%, win
xbow v pike, 6.91 v 3.85, 96.1%, win
mace v mace, 9.5 v 6, 95.8%, win

HA v mace, 6.6 v 4.64, 94.2% win
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0774.jpg
But what also happened was some naval stuff as well. Last turn we had 2 galleys carrying 4 units guarded by one caravel. There was a dutch Eastindiamen in range of our convoy, but our caravel would take the fight and the galleys could deliver the units the next turn. As for what happened to our galleys after that, well, it was in dutch hands, I had pretty much wrote them off.
Anyway, the dutch take the 96% eastindiamen v caravel fight and win, but they're left at 3.3 strength. Our ships are still next to land and combined with how well things went with Carthage I decide to dump the cargo there on the same coast they started from and use the 2 galleys to take down the eastindiamen. I use the first one for sacrifice and it wins,
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0774.jpg
even to the point where it becomes Navigation I (3 moves). With all the possibilities of where the dutch can place their remaining ships I decide that the best thing that the other galley can do is take on the barb galley at bad odds and it wins. The first galley ended up 1 tile southwest of where it's shown (able to escape to injiya if threatened) and the barb fighting galley (which also became Nav I) went to Copper City
Galley v Eastindiamen, 2 v 3.3, 14.2%, win
Galley v galley, 2 v 2.2, 32.2%, win

Most of their army moved to the tile marked "10". They had more units it seemed, in poison and elsewhere, the galleons appeared to have made another trip and because of that I was willing to risk leaving bubble gum exposed. Basically we had 3 stacks and workers to road 2 of them, and with the bubble gum city stack slightly better than the river-hike stack from poison, i used bubble gum. Here's how it went:
(our unit v theirs, our strength v theirs, our odds, our result)

We got a Dutch/Amazon 28 unit stack coming in from the NE (we currently have 31 scattered units in this region) but also the troops that were in Beta Centauri are gone (just a single archer now) which are likely in some of the 4 boats by our home island, and then also the Quatronian 4 Galleons have appeared again near poison city. Doesn't look too good at all :(

We were able to attack with 1 catapult 2 xbows 2 longbows 4 HA and a warrior, but I didn't. I guess I was too scared of those trebs. Although in hindsight, I maybe should have gone in with at least the cat and xbows, maybe even longbows too to lose-but-soften the attack and throw everything in the city and prepare for the worst, but it is what it is, now we likely have a razed city and an army with its window closing in on it. At this point I'm starting to lean towards grouping up in the jungles to stay alive and be a nuisance, but I'd need things to get out of hand for that to happen and the main stack ain't here yet.

So they took the city, landing 4 trebs to attack us with and 2 extra longbow to defend. In hindsight, I should have been across the river to fight those trebs (or anything) but there's that I wish I could have back with how this went. Last turn, as these units involved here are much the same, I was tempted to lead more or less xbows/cr2mace to get through to their mace, and after that it was more or less our mounted vs their pikes, and by then we'd have most of their units pummeled all they'd have is their seige, and if we could win some battles we'd end up with promotable units and they'd be left with seige. And what I had to balance the 2 new longbows was 2 more cats of my own (now 3) and if I were to give them city raider they'd take the longbows enough out of the fight that I could deal with the rest of the stack as I wanted. In hindsight, with how things went down, Barrage is always the way to go and this is the second time i've made this mistake. Looking at it again now it so clear that the number they had, 20, would make 3 cats (4-6 units coll. each) fairly minimal and I'd need all the collateral I could get. But city raider it was and I wasn't lucky enough to make up for it.

Some of those longbow battles i was looking too closely at just odds and not so much number, (thus relying on first strike); the first consecutive longbow v pike battle took no damage and I had to try it again.

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0875paint.jpg
Now, I'm gonna make the asumption that these are/were 5xp units at best (they switched to theo ~dozen turns ago so I'm thinking all that gets promoted is the single units, the crossbow and a pike, and if they don't land anything else (fingers crossed), then all they really got is that seige and maybe we have another good go at it next turn.

Something horrible happened this turn. They, likely Amazon with their recent obvious spy drop-offs (one went more or less unreported), sabotages the two corns of Castle as well as poisoning the city. For the turn being we just barely held on to pop 12 with just 1:food: left in the back but starting next turn were going to lose population. Our two workers begin repairing.
Mav
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0882.jpg
Over here this is where things stood as I logged in. All they did was attack with one measly treb. It attacked our city raider 3 mace at 13.6 odds and lost, we might have took no damage.
However, what you also may have noticed is the Amazon stack in the picture and another Sirius stack 4 tiles above that. These things are tough (shown in bottom shot) and will probably do us in over here on the maverick mainland. But at least for this turn, I had the opportunity to take on cav scout with the banged up what we got left and I took it. My thinking here is even though it makes things easier for the northern civs, at least I can harm someone. Screw them for siding with them and this is what they get. So the weak get weak and the strong get stronger.
us v them, us.. them, our odds, our result

Meant to take the shot but don't seem to have it. I'll do my best to explain. We had left little and were in a general retreat towards poison city. How they positioned themselves was as shown below, and thus separated like that I figured that among the 3 options I saw (1 - attacking now, 2 - maybe attacking next turn, and 3 defending two turns out) that with the units assembled and running round and such that the defending option was one of the worst options out there. With little fortify to depend on and no cultural defense their armies would possibly lose only the two catapults, quickly getting most battles in the 90s, etc. And with the Cuirassiers separated I figured my best chance to win anything would be right now so I attacked.
This is what was is the Amazon stack:
3 Xbow - C2Shock, C2Cover, C1Shock
1 Knight C2Pinch
6 WE - 3C2Pinch, C2Shock, C2Formation, C1Pinch
2 Mace - CR3, C1CoverCR1
1 Pike - C2
4 Siege
17 units, 13 core and 4 seige
We had 16 units, 15* and 1 siege
4 Musket - C2, C1Pinch, C1, 0
2 Mace - CR3, C1
1 Longbow - O
4 Xbow - 3 wounded, 5.3C3, 5.5C2, 4.3C2 & CG1
5 HA - some wounded, full C2, 2 full C1, wounded C1-C2s
a warrior which I'll discount and a cat - B2
I look at this and yeah, they got alot up against the muskets but once I get past the knight I got quite a few base 9 troops against the promoted 8s; if I can massage some of those down, I may be able to get some pretty close battles, and that I'll take over losing it all. I throw the cat in and get lucky with where the collateral fell, 2 pinches i believe, and then I make a pretty bad litle blunder, I send in the CG xbow from bubble gum without sending engineering over from merlot, so bam, he's outta moves, but through the other xbows and along the HAs damage was made with each battle and by the time the muskets came around we got some coin flips but just didn't have enough luck
cat v knight, 5 v 12, 2.3%, lose
xbow v knight, 6.55 v 10.44, 8.5%, lose
xbow v knight, 6.86 v 8.64, 24.7%, win

HA v WE, 6.6 v 13.6, 0.8%, lose
HA v WE, 6.6 v 12.8, 1.0%, withdraw
musket v WE, 10.8 v 10.2, 53.7%, win

In the first picture below all that is shown (what won or withdrew) got deleted. In fact all we have in a longbow and in those last few battles I lost track of the dutch Cuirassiers (bottom picture) so that means they (the dutch, or carthage if they had units in boats) can take both cities next turn, we're effectively done on the mainland, 1090ad

Well they put us back in despotism again so we lose our HR bonus. I believe the two cities no shown are hurting pretty bad. I'll admit, this is my first experience getting pummeled this bad with espionage. I assumed they would have to wait 5 turns to change me like I do but no, they can put me right back. I guess 5 more turns of pop loss,
Mav
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0950paint.jpg
So this is the beginning of the turn. I sorta expected this; I saw in civstats that they took our city and didfn't raze it. I figured there would be a decent chance that I'd want to attack. And if I did, I also knew that I'd be sorta making a choice for Sirius, if us/carthage fight it out it'd be opening the door to sirius, much like what happened on the mainland. But the prospect of carthage/sirius teaming up and joining all on one tile (the sirius boats are in the water - it looks very much like they're ready to make some sort of move) would be too much to bear. So presented with this, I went for it. I knew it would use up a ton of cats (I should have built more, maybe) but there just wasn't the numbers ther to absorb all the cats I could use. Over on the merlot side I've been talking about a 60 units stack needed to absorb our medival army (and yes it's bigger over there) but here is only a paltry 18. So in with the cats, all barrage II. 12 out of 15 used. It started at
5 v 20.30, 0.0% odds (5 times before damage taken to lead defender) ending at
5 v 14, 4.5% odds.
All twelve cats lost of course and then is was:

Beginning of turn: So there's your 24 units. And here is the wounded stack on the hill missing from last turn.
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot0967paint.jpg
12 cannons, 12 units. I knew we had enough units to last for at least a turn and I contemplated doing something like pulling out all but 12+ units (they had one east india at the shore able to pick up troops for maybe 16 units max) but the onslaught of those cannon would be too much, I wanted to find any reason to attack. And finally, I found enough in musket v cannon battles, it would just be alot to get there (although the reletively low number -5 cav 7 rifle- that pushed me on. And even when we got there the odds wouldn't be great, but maybe we could get lucky. But along the way I lost track of what I was trying to do. I used all muskets and was left with too many 6 v 12 battles. And at that point with all the wounded, it would take like 3 units to do a dent in what they had left so I stopped it. I used too many catapult on Q. Instead it's over. We're stuck on defense, and even then our turns are few.

As much as I like staggering our defenses toward our capital I suppose it's entirely possibly that they're getting close to big enough where they could hit us amphibiously, our capital included. So wow, the turn I take vacation something new happens. For whatever reason, they line up 4 galleons all in front and show some (5) land units, familiar names we know well. I can't help but think they're beginning to be up to something. Now, it may not be screened correctly, but there are an abundance of tiles they could hide galleons in, starting with the one below "theodora" to our whole ocean edge. CDZ has done little if anything, still holding 3 galleons pinned against Royal Gardens and slowly building up the library.
But as much as I debated pulling all our units to the Castle (even if only for a turn), it might be nothing.
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot1006paint.jpg
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot1007paint.jpg
So here's everything. And giving an earlier subject some more thought, I don't think'll be too lucky that they'll be attacking amphibiously. Drafted units, which could easily be 48-60+, won't start that high.
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot1014.jpg
Those power numbers seem pretty lopsided. sirius/cdk share an averaged 954500; I'd kick 20000 up for sirius and down for cdz. But if I think back to what sirius had v mav at the end wasn't too much more than we could deal with so if that's 110000 then amazon's 1293000 might still not be enough.
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm33/slaze_bucket/Civ4ScreenShot1013.jpg
The obvious landing spot is the wine, out of reach of baths as our units are arrayed as shown. We have 22 catapults. At 4-6 units collateral plus attack damage minus siege absorbing collateral, I'm giving us about 100 effective collateral hits. And with cav and rifles at the higher strength, I'd think we'd want to get at least 2 or more collateral hits on each unit, so that would put our beak even point (at least for the single turn) to be about 40 let's say 50 units. I think if they land 60 with like 15 seige, our 50 lesser units won't be able to handle it. If we collapse the 9, 12 and 15 periferal units to the cap, then our 75ish units might handle 60.
btw of the 4 galleons all are familiar except winepress. the others are dora's revenge, nabaxia pride and anoth but winepress is new and coming from the west. Are they that brash to tell us where their going to get us the turn before? Or do they want us to know this and get us elsewhere?

But for now I've left the turn as shown. I'll admit I'm a little hesitant to empty cities for a guy who's probably around but hasn't spoken up yet.
And the turns no over yet, at least not for another 12 hours. I'll leave it like this for now (and perhaps finally) but I'll check in the morning in case anyone chimes in or if I change my mind. Fktor, if I moved alot towards the capital as sort of a check could you move it back in case nothing happened? Or maybe where just better off like this. I suppose we could just abandon Castle if things looked too unpromising (alot landed). Though I think it's a pretty good guess those cdz galleons on royal gardens are empty (imaging the unit costs to park them there forever like they've done) and that we cas afford to send all but like 2 units out of there (at least for a turn) while we shore up the capital's side of things.
Thoughts?
Fktor May 01, 2011, 11:13 PM Turn 195, 1350AD
No attack yet. Amazon brings 3 more galleons to the scene, coming from the north, as well as show us a few more units. CDZ moves their library galleon 1NE - for no better reason other that to join the display, I guess.
I've rearranged tiles a bit to allow Castle and Gardens to grow faster - should be enough to stabilize the economy. Didn't whip anything.

Amazons show us some more units, and it is somewhat possible that they are loading an invasion force in full sight. The Vikings move their galleon back, otherwise do nothing.

I am also contemplating sending a letter, cced to all teams but Sirius, asking if they would be willing to, more or less, break from the past, cooperate and challenge sirius. I'd imagine by then it'd be infantry, likely more.

and they have Railroad and almost Assembly Line, muskets and cats aren't looking too good. Just a few MG would negate the attack damage component of our catapults' 100 effective collateral hits I'd put closer to 80. 4 Machine guns w/ 36 units is closer to the break even point of what we can handle.

So here it is, AMAZON lands!!!
Above is what they landed, 4 MGs with 7 cannon and 16 rifles, and the last three shots are castle, center tile and baths. Below are the event results and as you can see, it went horribly. My thinking here is that the units with the best odds were the maces (mgs have the 50% vs our muskets) and so i wanted to take those down a bit before the catapults came in cause I wanted the attack damage from the catapults to count for something. But the maces hardly did anything to the MGs. The numbers were 8.8 v 22 or 18, but with the first strikes they hardly did anything. The first five did no damage and the few that did i think always were only one shot. In hindsight, the way to go was to maybe go in with the catapults first and hope for some damage or just try some muskets first or maybe even just don't try it on hills. In the 40+ battles, the best odds were like 27% and maybe only 5 were 11% or greater. Alot of odds were way under 1% against drill II/III MGs. After enough of it I stopped and gave up. Before I said we could handle 36 units w/ 4 MGs. 27 total units with 4 MGs did us in. The last shot shows what they had left when I ended. The cats even did all the collateral they could.
