A non-trollish version of this thread, since it seems to be a popular theme. Expanded to include punk and hard rock, both to expand the potential of the thread and to save quibbling as to what constitutes what. They all stem from more or less the same place, and have a long history of mutual exchange, so it may be easier just to consider them as a whole.

Commence noise pollution!

wow some good taste in this thread. I was going to post some 80's stuff as I assumed you guys would be posting nothing but new stuff and I was going to have to show you how it was done in my days. But that won't be necessary afterall. Megadeth, Metallica and Iron Maiden :b:

I guess I'll have to find some 90's or newer stuff then to balance out the thread.

Okay this song isn't really metal, but since it's my user name, I feel the need to post it.

edit: okay I have no clue how to embed on these forums, I apologize.

The embedding code on Youtube doesn't work; I think it's html, which doesn't work with the forum. Instead, you take the part of the URL after the "=" sign, and put it in tags.
e.g. [youtube]BBkmp3RB-Dw[/youtube*], less the asterix, becomes...

I don't know, I'd give the One By One album a pass. It may not be hard rock through and through, but there's more than a few songs that could be considered as such. Anyone who's heard Probot is aware that Grohl knows his stuff, so there's no need to begrudge inclusion just because they don't usually fit the bill.

Huayna Capac357
May 22, 2010, 06:34 PM

gonna go back to the 80's back when people were scared Metal was satanic and ruining our kids (the jury is still out on that one).

This band is considered cheesy because their lyrics are all pro war. But I like em. Everyone else is anti war, so why not be pro war to be different? These guys are better known outside the U.S. than within- go figure. If you like D&D you may like these guys. Beware: epic long songs ahead- true metal

One more- I bet none of you guys heard of these guys. They kind of wimped out by the 90's, then their guitarist died. This is raw early 80's metal. Their mid 80's stuff wasn't so great, however.

It's that one of them are vikings and the other pirates, right?

Traitorfish
Aug 08, 2010, 06:07 PM
Yeah, but that's not the mismatch- it's that one plays a highly competent synthesis of heavy metal and Nordic traditional music and expresses a genuine interest in their subject matter, while the other plays godawful bargain basement thrash accompanied by the clumsy tootling of a cheap keyboard set to "accordion" and rehashing an over-used stereotype in four hundred different ways.

...You may be able to guess which one I prefer. ;)

Traitorfish
Aug 08, 2010, 06:43 PM
Cheap, dirty and loud I can live with; it's the "godawful" that gets me. After all, Flogging Molly can put out a "pirate punk" song or two (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plfVQV-klZo) without it sucking, so why can't Alestorm? ;)

Yared

That's almost how it is with a lot of underground bands. They don't really expect to sell much music- although, obviously, they'd prefer if you buy it- and make their living (or semi-living) from gigs and merchandise. It's sort of accepted that only "proper" fans are a feasible source of income for alternative/underground musicians, so you should just try and cultivate a good core fanbase and not get your bollocks in a twist because a few (thousands :p) casual fans will listen to your stuff for free. That's not entirely new, either- people've been taping and burning albums for years, bit-torrenting has just allowed it to reach a level of ease and convenience so as to become more of a norm.

Yared

Mmm. Make the playings a little more expensive and the merchandise cost a little more and I think it will even itself out, especially with the ability to waaaaaaay more easily increase the fanbase.

Mmm. Make the playings a little more expensive and the merchandise cost a little more and I think it will even itself out, especially with the ability to waaaaaaay more easily increase the fanbase.
That's already becoming the case- my parents used to be punks, and the amount I pay for a gig and a shirt far outstrips what they did (acknowledging inflation). Few bands make very much money at all from album sales, so- as you say- the ability to distribute their music far more widely is ultimately beneficial to a lot of them. I'm pretty optimistic about a new model emerging- the old one was essentially derived from the mainstream, and is becoming increasingly irrelevant in a world where digital distribution- in all it's forms- is the norm.

Well, indie labels usually aren't so bad- they do a decent job of publicising bands, helping with production/touring/etc. and tend to be pretty fair with their cut, so I can see there being a place for them in the future. The relationship is generally a bit more symbiotic, less employer-employee. It's the mainstream labels and their subsidiaries that tend to screw bands around, because they don't really have to care about them (I'm looking at you, Roadrunner!).

the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.

Thick, massive sound? Check.
Highly Amplified Distortion? Check.
Extended Guitar Solos? Check.
Emphatic Beats? Check.
Overall Loudness? Check.
Masculinity and Machismo? In spades.

Yeah, I'm going to go with Huayana on this one- Red Hot Chilli Pepper's earlier stuff fits in here. It's sort of rap/funk rock, but it's definitely on the hard end of the rock spectrum and arguably proto-funk metal. Honestly, the line between hard rock and alt-rock is pretty blurred- a pretty hard Muse song is at the top of the alt/indie thread, for example- so there's not that much point in squabbling about it.

Anyway...

I'm really not sure what I think of Municipal Waste: light-hearted thrash revival, tedious posing, or disingenuous hipster appropriation? Either way, it's a laugh.

And to Disgustipated, I surely have heard of Savatage. I just found your description of the band's progress kind of weird as 1987-1993 is commonly called the band's golden age both musically and success wise yet you claim they "wimped out by the 90's". Maybe you messed up with the years... or you just have an uncommon opinion about them. Anyways I'm more fond towards the golden age stuff and Hall of the Mountain King is my favorite album of their's.

I just didn't like fight for the rock and power of the night. Very weak albums. I liked Sirens, the Dungeons are Calling, Hall of the Mountain King, and Gutter Ballet. I bought the album released in 93 I think it was. It was okay, but not as good as Mountain King and Gutter Ballet.

Took a little short road trip. My favorite album to listen to on night road trips is Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. I'm not sure why that is. Maybe because their song Moonchild is best heard under the moon. :). Although there was no moon tonight. But that worked out okay. It made the roads even darker. No light except the light coming from my headlights. This works best when outside the city so there is no other light than your headlights and the moon.

Of course many metal albums sound best when heard at night. Antichrist Superstar is one such album. But I stick with this Maiden one. It's a tradition for me that kind of goes back to my high school days when travelling at night on the road.
