View Full Version : What is the best RTS (Real Time Strategie) game?

Personnaly, I love Age of Empires I, Rise of Rome Expansion.

I also had fun with AoE II, Dune 200, Emperor: Battle for Dune, Warcraft III, Dungeon Keeper (I & II), Stronghold, Cossacks (original & expansion)...

And yours? What's your favourite RTS game?

Portuguese

RTS? CIVIII PTW of course  (OK, I havem't played it yet...)

Now, seriously, AOE-ROR exp and AOK:TC and Cossacks(+exp... )
Maybe Stronghold would be fine...

Not Dune: too low CIVs and only some campaigns with no random maps = short life time game
NOT WARCRAT3!!! Stop it!

Ground Control, Battlezone II, metal fatigue...
And I was told Virtual Valerie 2 was a great strategy game too. In real time of course.

WarCraft II Battle.net edition of course.... though I haven't played any of the others mentioned except WC3 ;)
also I don't think there was too much strategy in Virtual Valerie 2 except playing one-handed

You do realize Civ 3 isn't an RTS game right?

My favorite goes to Age of Empires 2.

Starcraft set the RTS standard. I'm beginning to think blizzard just got lucky, War3 is an awful game to anyone who played SC competitively. The old school community is already dwindling, and age of myth doesn't seem to be catching on with many of the non AOKers.

To be fair, Starcraft wasn't really completely balanced until a year after its release. Its not been 6 months for war3, but with random item drops, mundane creeping patterns if you're playing to win, and the dumbed down micro, it doesn't really have much of a progaming future.

War3 was still a big success, it just won't have the staying power SC had.

I never really got into RTS game very much, but the one that I liked the most was Conquest: Frontier Wars. It's also the only RTS game that I still occasionally play.

I play some "real-time" tactical games, but that doesn't really count.

Warcaft 3 was a bit of a disappointment. Still it was the fastest selling game ever!!! 1 million copies in a week or so!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait for Starcraft 2. That will blow every gaming record out of the water. Blizzard hasn't announced anything about it, except that they plan to make it. Dummies are wasting their time with World of Warcraft and Starcraft Ghost. What's up with this going into the RTS world, with these two upcoming games. Get back to the RTS! :(

I just got Star Trek: New Worlds, but only because EB was selling it for $5 at my local mall. I figured I had nothing to lose. I know it and all other Star Trek games got bad reviews, but I had nothing to lose. I like Star Trek enough to stick with it for when I need a break from Civ3 and Starcraft.

I think there are a lot of very good RTS games :)

Empire Earth is probably one of my favourites, it is very epic :) Although it has a lot of shortcomings, I think the good by far outweighs the bad.

Starcraft Broodwars is another great game, I had a lot of fun playing multiplayer with that game.

Medieval: Total War is great as well, a sort of RTS, TBS hybrid, and it does it very well :)

Total Annihilation was excellent, and had very nice mods to keep it fresh.

And I would probably add C&C Tiberian sun. I played that a lot at school with my friends. It was also easy to mod (I love rules.ini :p)

Starcraft & BW exp. for sure! I agree with the earlier post: it set the standard. TA is ok too.

On Empire Earth, I found it a waste of € 45. It got even less strategy than the AoE games.

Time to undust the protoss units I think.

Starcraft is old old old old old and fun. Every summer I have a sudden urge to play it, then I get bored of it after three weeks ;)

Id love to see Starcraft2, but Ill bet Blizzard wont make it until 2010. I mean, theyre working on a Starcraft console game first person shooter that I heard of five years ago. I think Blizzard wasted WAY too much time and resources on WarIII, which from what I hear isnt too good...

Yeah, its Starcraft: Ghost. They are barely making it, though: they have a handful of other companies doing the work for them. In the words of Penny Arcade..."Someone has to count the money." I think they should stick where they're good: RTSs.

TA, definitely. Only problem was the AI- Either became too strong or too weak. Never tried MP though. Phantom Lord is right- Variety of units, MASSIVE battles, cool weapons and effects, and still runs great on my computer. Only problem is: I don't have it.

Stronghold is a close second.

Total Annihilation had some expansion packs which included AI by a guy mnamed Switek. It is called Switek's killer AI, and believe me, on hard, you get tank rushed in the first 3 minutes some times.

If you loved the AoE series then for the love of god go buy Cossacks and addons, very similar interface but SOOO much better and with a staggering 8000 unit limit (which was itself removed in the addon), formations, real tactics, damn the list just goes on. :) Only slight downside is the weak AI, definatley a favourite for multiplayer.

Are you talking about Star War Galactic Battlegrounds or another Red Alert games. Since I like the Age of Empires game then I would have technically liked SWGB but I saw a demo where it was almost exactly the same so I dislike it because a new game should be a new game especially when the next AOE game was a true step forward.

The best RTS should be Dune II of course :)
On the other hand there'll be a murder if anybody dare to say any Westwood RTS game, excepted the legendary C&C1. All the other games (red alert, C&C 2, Generals etc...) especially red alert were incredibly too unbalanced. Are you surprised that any winner would choose russians? mmm... Really? Weird. I hardly ever chose USSR. I played as Allies most of the time, and IIRC it didn't seem any harder the playing as the Soviets. Of course that was ages ago and I have the memory of a goldfish. :fish:

Red Alert 2 I have played recently, and it is unbalanced. But as thestonesfan said, balance is overrated. If I want to crush my opponets I chose Soviets (Kirov/Apocalypse rush), but if I want a challenge I choose Allies. A lot harder to rush with them, I need at least 20 Prism Tanks or 16 Harriers

Of course, I have to mention WC3..
But if you want to know what I think is best, take a look at Bungie's Myth series. I was never that good at it, but some ppl are still keeping it alive, with their own servers, tournaments, etc. It's unlike most RTS games, in that it's 100% strategy and unit control, 0% teching/base construction/unit management. Which makes it a lot more fun, imo.

warcraft 2
c & c red alert
AoE games
Star Trek Armada 2
Sim City series.

Red alert i always played as allies. The Soviets had slow tanks, and would always get directly hit, compared to the allies smaller, but faster units. And the GPS from the tech center helped out a lot. So did the gap generator in MP games. Me and my buddies used to play each other online. I always smoked 'em. 2 barracks, 3 ore refineries, 3 war factories. Then a radar dome if i felt i needed it. my philosophy with that game: build what you'll need and use...now i'm just ranting..

Many series i haven't tried yet. Tropico looks like a funny game. I think i'll pick it up and play it in the winter, to remind me of the summer warmth.

huh? I can't quite follow your argument. take WC3 or Starcraft: the races are very balanced (meaning you can win against a more or less equal opponent no matter what the race), yet they are totally different to play, and you need different tactics to win - > makes it WAY more interesting and definately not boring, IMHO.

Someone mentioned Lords of The Realms 2 that game was great.

I don't really consider Europa Universalis real-time. I'd never play it online because I like games that end after 3 hours or so.

Bought all the Age of Games >played them, but for some reason get bored even though their great games. I guess it just comes down to who can click faster> not much strategy in that.

Quake CTF is real time strategy :P but others might disagree so my vote goes to the granddaddy of them all Populous.

I disagree though. It's a hybird...part RTS and part TBS. It plays like an RTS, but you can pause it. I've heard it refered to as a TBS with really short turns, but then again, that's true of all RTS games if you think about it.

Dell19
Jul 24, 2003, 07:20 AM
The thing is that units cannot move just anywhere, they have to move to a new location and there is a fixed time to move between each province so whilst its not actually a TBS it feels like one.

True! Back when they had global rankings, the highest Allied player was ranked 13# in the world. The aircraft alone we enough to make the Soviets the most dominate faction. The expansion made the situation worse, with the addition of the Shock Trooper. Red Alert 2 was not very unbalanced however. All three sides had advantages. Soviets had most troops in the field at any given time. The Allies has most expensive, but better equiped troops. Yuri had the ultimate defense, but was very hard to attack with.

Our favorite RTS was AgeOfEmpires but since Rise Of Nations have been released, we plays only in this game.

Rome: Total War and Battlefield Command look to be neck and neck in my list of upcoming RTS games... Both have amazing graphics, amazing realism, and amazingly high system requirements (probably). (Which of course my comp can't handle) In Rome: Total War units actually battle each other! Instead of mindlessly hacking with their swords, they thrust, parry, use theirs shields, combine that with 10,000 fully 3D animated units on a battlefield, I'd like to see a comp that could handle that. RoN seems good, too from the demo, but that runs slow...

No.Dice speaks for me in this regard. Starcraft and Brood Wars are the penultimate RTS platform. I seriously wonder why Blizzard is wasting my valuable lifespan not crafting new scenarios, campaigns, and expansions for this masterpiece.

Tough to say for me. Starcraft: Broodwar was the best by far, but I just got WCIII a few weeks ago and so far I'd say it's a contender. I haven't played with the expansion yet, but I've heard it adds more strategy to the game, making it even a bit more fun (probably more like Starcraft, since many people seemed to prefer it).
Was not crazy for the AoE series at all. Way more civs, but they were all practically identical except for graphics and maybe one special unit. I like the variation in units and tactics that blizzard's games have, and I find it amazing that they manage to make them so different, yet keep them well balanced.

StarCraft is easily the best RTS game.

When it comes to balance and still difference between the Races, thats the best game ever.
When it comes to game design, this game beats all the other RTS's three times over.

And it's very good in SinglePlayer as well as MP.

I never played the game as much as many others though.

Finaly I played Starcraft! After several years from it's release (1997), it is still a great and addictive game. The campaign is just incredible.

Things better than AOE:
- the concept of the campaign;
- three races completly different from one another and with different playing styles;
- rally points;
- different units cost different population space.

Things worse than AOE:
- no random maps.

In the end, it's difficult to choose the best between these two games.

Goodness...I have to CHOOSE? Ah what the hey...

Age of Empires series - love it, so easy to learn and can keep you occupied for hours. Great fun from both games and their expansions.

Shogun: Total War - just got back into it. Amazing battles, fun to backstab your neighbouring...allies. Medieval won't work, curse it, but I have heard great things about it...and let's not mention the upcoming Rome sequel ;)

Caesar 3 - My favourite of all the series. I prefer it to Sim City as well, for some reason - possibly because I actually understand how to play it.

And finally, for I don't think it has gotten a mention from anyone yet, but Homeworld could possibly be my favourite of all. A wonderful single-player storyline, gorgeous visuals (even today, I'd argue) and it even worked on my run-by-hamsters-on-wheels computer back when it was first released. A marvel of a game.

Caesar 3 was just too strange for me. Age was good because of the user-made campaigns, many of which were better then the pre-packaged ones.

Trouble with Caesar 3 is that you can spend all the time in the world building up a nice fine city, but then when one thing starts to go wrong, it can easily cause a catacylsmic chain of events that destroys you. It requires a lot more patience than most RTS games.

I didn't like warcraft 3 much. Maybe it was just my sucky graphics card, or maybe I just like having much larger armies than war3 allows. :)

What you just said proved you totally don't understand war3 philosophy. Bah, if you prefer games like total a., where you just build 500 units and send them to slaughtery, then it's your right. Now just keep in mind that War3 is focusing on another gameplay based on absolute micromanagement. So let's compare apples to apples, but not apples to pears. You just can't compare MTW to Empire Earth, nor compare RON to War3. Although they're all called RTS but actually War3 belongs to RTT. T for tactics, and not strategy. Capice.

Thrawn
Sep 16, 2003, 12:43 AM
I wasn't comparing anything. War3 isn't my style because I like larger armies, not as in tank rushing style, but not neccesarily way larger either (like the total war games), but large enough to give the feel of an immense battle going on. I never seemed to have got that from war3. Maybe I'll give war3 another go when I get an decent graphics card.

btw, tactics and strategy are basically the same imho. Afterall, you can't really have one without the other can you? You may have the tactics, but if you don't implement them properly (a strategy), they are useless.

GenghisK
Sep 16, 2003, 03:37 AM
Once again wrong, and wrong. Tactics and strategy and fundamentally different. Just search on a dictionnary, you'll see why. Strategy is a larger scale of management. Maybe you cannot have one without the other one, but that doesn't mean they're the same! You can't have algebra without mathematics, so are algebra and mathematics the same? mmm....

PS: you can also ask a general, or a military person ;)

Thrawn
Sep 16, 2003, 06:14 PM
Thats true I suppose. Maybe my brain wasn't working properly. :crazyeye: I think that what I was trying to point out is that like tactics/strategy on a larger scale than war3 can give me. Which of course does not make war3 a bad game, its just not my prefered type of game.

why is there 2 thread for this.

as i mentioned in other thread

when u guys are nominating the best game what are u basing on?

on the game u enjoyed the most (which has no effect on what other thinks, so therefore everyone would have different #1s)

or on the game that was the most popular

or the game that was designed the best in gameplay strategy element glitches etc.

If it is the 3rd one, i think everyone should agree stracraft is it. maybe 2nd one too.

Red alert had horribly broken gameplay. It isnt good by that standard.

Why would I be the one losing if I am aware of imbalances. I'd be the one abusing those arent I?

It wouldnt be fun for those who arent aware of it, if they eevr played ppl that whored the tactics.

and if everyone eventually knows the abusable tactics, game gets reduced to practicing those broken elements in the game. And game gets boring. thats what i meant.

You cant compete with players that use only the best tactic when game is imbalanced.

so lucky for u u didnt play anyone too good, but if u did, it would have been boring just losing all the time just because game is designed crappy now wouldnt it?
