Does everyone remember what this is? I aska question, if you have the answer right you wait for my confirmation and may ask the next question.

Who won the first world cup after the 2nd World War and in which year?

I know, it's an easy one, but we gotta start easy. ;)

MCdread
Nov 15, 2002, 12:11 PM
Uruguay in 1950.

What's the european country whose clubs have won the most champions cups/leagues?

willemvanoranje
Nov 15, 2002, 12:22 PM
Spain: 10 (Barcelona 1, Real Madrid 9)

second must be England (Man UTD 2, Liverpool 4, Nottingham 2, Villa 1), then Italy, Germany, Holland and Portugal (Porto once in 1987 and Benfica twice, somewhere early 60'ies?).

Which team has the longest record of being undefeated in an away game and from when to when? (use google if you want)?

or

What is the nickname of the game where Ajax kicked Liverpool ass in 1966/1967 EC I by 5-1, becoming a historical game because no one had ever heard of dutch clubs doing good, nor of dutch clubs beating english.

willemvanoranje

yeah, of course, it says 'or', and you already answered the other one correct ;) The answer was 'The Match in the Fogg'. People from one side of the stadium only knew that a goal was scored because they heard cheers from the other side. I have some quite nice pics of that in a book.

Ok, this one is especially for you willem ;)
What extraordinary event took place in 1976 (?) in a dutch league match, on which the van der Kerkhof twins took their equality relationship to the extreme?

willemvanoranje
Nov 15, 2002, 03:37 PM
I really wouldn't know this one, except that it must've been a PSV-match of course ;) But let me guess: they switched shirts/numbers? They both scored the same goal?

If you said that one had punched the other's nose would make more sense. That would explain the injured arm of one of them in the WC 1978 (Rene I thik). :D

OK, here's another hint: they both broke a leg but in different ocasios of the game. Now you just have to guess what did those two plays had in common.

Ok, I can't give more clues without telling it, so I'm going togive the answer.
They both broke their legs in the same match, one in the 8th minute of the first half, and the other one in the 8th minute of the second half. A little less wild than what you were suggesting...

What's the name of the french player that was violentlly charged by Schumacher in the famous "Schumacher assault" in the even more famous semi-final of 1982?

Just a very wild guess though, mostly because I found it so incredible that a university team could make it that far in the English cup competition.

They play in the Dr. Martens Premier League, I think. Which is the 6th level in English football. It goes:

FA Premier League (20 Teams)
Division One (24 Teams)
Division Two (24 Teams)
Division Three (24 Teams)
Conference League (22 Teams)
Dr. Martens Premier (22 Teams)

They got knocked out by Morcambe

zenga
Nov 21, 2002, 07:32 AM
Tottenham Hotspur (1901) - although technically every winner before 1888 was a non-league side!

Top scorer was Sandy Brown (15 goals) - I had to look that one up.:p

Anyway, a nice easy question on world football next.

What was unusual about the 1950 World Cup?

...and I don't mean the fact that the US beat England!:D

anarchywrksbest
Nov 21, 2002, 04:18 PM
What WASN'T unusual about it!

It was the first one after the war and the Italian FIFA guy had hidden the trophyin a show box during the war. A lot of the teams that qualified pulled out and were replace by teams like India...who also pulled out. There were only 13 teams which were narrowed down with what appears to be the logic of a mouse.

Oh and the final was played in an unfinished Stadium in Rio.....

MCdread
Nov 21, 2002, 04:30 PM
There wasn't any final, but a pool between the last 4 teams. Fortunately the last game turned out to be the decisive, thus often refered to as being the final of that tournament.

The question was fairly general but that was the answer I had in mind.

anarchywrksbest, you're right about all those things in that World Cup. The Scots qualified ( 2nd in the Home International series) but did not compete after taking the huff and several others also pulled out - the Indians ( alledgedly) because they were not allowed to play barefoot!

col has the correct answer.
Both Barcelona and Madrid were after him, and Barcelona negociated with River Plate while Real Madrid spoke with Milionarios. Legally, the player should represent Barcelona, but this happened during Franco's regime (FC Barcelona's stadium was perhaps the only place where the opposition could speak) and the decision was that the player should play one year in each club, starting with Real Madrid. Of course, after one year, it was easy to keap him in the club.

Next question, then.

Either Geoff Hurst in the 66 final against Germany or fellow englishman David Platt against Belgium in 1990. Both goals were in the 120th minute I think.

mordhiem
Nov 28, 2002, 10:24 AM
Hmm, yeah I would go with David Platt too. Geoff Hursts goal was earlier than Platts I think, Platts was litteraly last minuite whilst after hurst there were still 2-3 mins to play.

Hmm in an FA cup mood at the moment, so:

Calcio is the name of an old game that developed in Italy around medievil times. It involved carrying the ball in your hands or kicking it along with your feet and was pretty much no-holds barred rules-wise. When football arrived in Italy via British sailors, it was commented that it seemed simmilar to the old game and has gone by the same name ever since...

I'm not sure if any other countries call football an alternate name other than soccer.

Easy one then...hmmmm

Who were the candidates to follow up Thijs Liebrechts as the coach of the Dutch national team for the 1990 World Cup Finals in Italy and who became it?
BONUS: what was the problem with this guy?

MCdread
Dec 16, 2002, 07:32 PM
The one who got the job was Leo Beenhacker. As for the other candidates, I don't have any idea. Michels? He won the Euro'88, would be a good choice. Advocaat? Hiddink? Gave PSV the European Cup of 1988. Or... maybe Cruijff. He's allways very desired whenever KNVB has to choose a new coach.
About the Bonus part: do you mean Liebrechts (I thought it was Liebregts) or Beenhacker? If it is the first, I really don't know, but it certainly was because of bad results. If it's the later, well, the problem is that the WC was a huge disappointment.

P.S.: Lately, I think the questions have become too related with the country of the the person who asks it.

willemvanoranje
Dec 17, 2002, 08:50 AM
yeah, i know, i had a good international question at first though, but forgot..dooh. Anyway, you're close enough I think. The second candidate was indeed Cruyff, who was on your (long) list, and the players wanted him as well, but it was Michels who prevented this, as he stated on tv yesterday "because the dutch national team consisted mainly of ajacieden (ajax players) and beenhakker was coach of ajax." The trouble was that no one really wanted, liked or needed Beenhakker.

P.S. The problem with Liebregts was that the players didn't think he was good enough.

Yes, it was Brasil-USSR. :goodjob:
But not only because it was Pelé's first appearence. The brazilian coach thought that Austria and England had a gane that was too physical for some of their young talented stars, so both Pe´lé and Garrincha were only called for the third match, following the disappointig 0-0 draw against England.
The brazilian players began their incisive attacks right after the first whistle. Such was the avalanche tjhat in the first minutes Yachin had already made some difficult saves and saw his posts targeted more than once. Pelé, Vavá et al. had already humiliated the soviet defense with great dribbles, and more than any other Garrincha was performing a legendary show: the russian left back was dribbled and went to the ground countless times, and in one of those, Garrincha moved back again only to pass through him one more time! After all this Vavá finally scored: 3 minutes after the kick-off!!! That's why people on the stadium and watching in the television didn't have many doubts that Brazil would win this cup and called this "The Greatest Three Minutes in the History of Football".

My question:
In 1995, Figo was the best player in the portuguese league, and both him and his club thought it was a good idea for him to leave. So, his club, Sporting made a deal with an italian club, but Figo made another deal with another italian club on his own. It turned out that he had actually signed for both clubs. In the trial that followed it was decided that he couldn't play in Italy in the next two years as penalty for signing two contracts. In the end he went to Barcelona (the best decision he ever made) and didn't loose any part of the season (lucky indeed).

The question is: for which two italian clubs did he sign in the first place?
