And really, that question should go on a Petty fan site. PeteAtoms Jun 29, 2010, 02:43 PM I was pondering the infinite monkeys+typewriters theorem, and began to wonder about the number pi. 1) If you turn the digits in pi into binary (evens to 0's, odds to 1's), won't pi also contain all the works of Shakespeare? 2) What is "information?" Does it require someone to interpret it to be considered information? If the digits of pi (turned into binary) go on forever, does pi not contain all the information in the universe, and all information possible? Does this imply infinite information? As you can see, I obviously don't have a firm grasp on the concept of "information" vs. random "stuff," or what have you. (This might have been worth its own thread... :dunno:) SonicTH Jun 29, 2010, 02:58 PM First off, a toast to our administration for finally reviving this! --- Here's three I always wondered, and since there's no "Ask a Moderator" topic: 1. Are birthday threads archived? 2. I notice there are three different types of mod titles(not including staff and such) - junior, normal mod, and senior mod. I assume there are different abilities/privileges each one has? What would they be? 3. What, apart from being a series thread, makes a topic deemed suitable for being archived? I imagine it not being any real discussion. Zack Jun 29, 2010, 03:09 PM there's no "Ask a Moderator" topic: You are wrong sir! (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=59454) Turner Jun 29, 2010, 03:55 PM First off, a toast to our administration for finally reviving this! --- Here's three I always wondered, and since there's no "Ask a Moderator" topic: Well, the FAQ thread, linked above, sorta kinda is. I debated starting an "Ask a Moderator" thread, but we decided there would be too much PDMA in it. 1. Are birthday threads archived? I don't think so. They just die off and go to the bottom of the list. 2. I notice there are three different types of mod titles(not including staff and such) - junior, normal mod, and senior mod. I assume there are different abilities/privileges each one has? What would they be? Junior mod is designed to 'break in' the moderator. Teach them how to moderate their areas. They are promoted to Moderator at or about six months. This gives them global powers, but they really shouldn't use them unless necessary. Mostly the global powers are used to ban spambots. Normal Moderators are promoted to Senior Moderator at or about two years of service, and have global powers. Basically a Sr. Mod can moderate any subforum they have access to, and have it 'count'. Generally we back up a moderator that has stepped outside of the subforum, but if they were to do it too much something would probably be said to them privately about it. I have not seen this happen. 3. What, apart from being a series thread, makes a topic deemed suitable for being archived? I imagine it not being any real discussion. :dunno: LightFang Jun 29, 2010, 04:14 PM I was pondering the infinite monkeys+typewriters theorem, and began to wonder about the number pi. 1) If you turn the digits in pi into binary (evens to 0's, odds to 1's), won't pi also contain all the works of Shakespeare? 2) What is "information?" (This might have been worth its own thread... :dunno:) Semi-related: Click me! (http://abstrusegoose.com/261) I generally find that information theory and stuff is espoused by Christians a lot because they will say things like "evolution never leads to an increase in information, only a loss," but I also do know that there is a very real thing called information theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_theory) which relates to electrical engineering and stuff which I don't really get. :9 Maybe a mathy person will come along and answer for you! madviking Jun 29, 2010, 05:00 PM I was pondering the infinite monkeys+typewriters theorem, and began to wonder about the number pi. 1) If you turn the digits in pi into binary (evens to 0's, odds to 1's), won't pi also contain all the works of Shakespeare? Yes. Pi is infinite and nonrepeating. Thus all possible combinations are present, including the entire works of Shakespeare. You'll just have to search faaaaaaa(aaa)^(aaa)^(aaa)aaar into the number, but it's there. EDIT: Easiest: 1/3 = 0.33333... 1/3*3 = 0.33333...*3 3/3 = 0.99999... 3/3 = 1 1 = 0.99999... PeteAtoms Jun 29, 2010, 07:42 PM Is .99999~ equal to 1? (1/3) = 0.333... 3 x (1/3) = 0.999... = (3/3) = 1 So yeah, I think so. But I guess: 1 - (0.999999...) = 0.000...001 = 0 is true too. madviking Jun 29, 2010, 07:48 PM But I guess: 1 - (0.999999...) = 0.000...001 = 0 is true too. If 0.999... is infinite then yes, by definition. Gigaz Jun 29, 2010, 11:59 PM I was pondering the infinite monkeys+typewriters theorem, and began to wonder about the number pi. 1) If you turn the digits in pi into binary (evens to 0's, odds to 1's), won't pi also contain all the works of Shakespeare? 2) What is "information?" As you can see, I obviously don't have a firm grasp on the concept of "information" vs. random "stuff," or what have you. 1) Yes, with a common interpretation of the binaries. But you need much more time to find all the works of Shakespeare in pi than to write your own Shakespeare. 2) To avoid these sorts of paradoxons like in 1), the information that is contained of a given text is defined as the number of bits that you need to reproduce it correctly. Pi, by this definition, contains hardly any information. You can write a short computer program that reproduces pi with desired accuracy. If you manage to find all the works of Shakespeare in pi, you can define it as being the text from the n-th to the m-th bit in pi with a certain interpretation. You can expect n and m to be of comparable size or even longer than all the works of Shakespeare. Lord Baal Jun 30, 2010, 04:03 AM Yes! My favourite thread is back. There are no witnesses and there are no bruises left behind. What should person A do, could they successfully get a charge for assult? Without a witness or evidence, it's pretty pointless to call the police. You could do it everytime, and "B" might eventually figure it out, but more than likely not. Get evidence, or a witness. Otherwise you have no case. aimeeandbeatles Jul 03, 2010, 09:33 PM OK, thanks. Heres a strange question. This is an actual conversation on a message board. They were talking about a website going back up and they werent sure if the original owner or someone else was putting it back up. Also on my first post I was a little confused. <another member>, <original site owner> IS NOT BACK! <other person> has taken over the name.... Its on the same domain. Its possible to spoof a domain name but I think it requires configuring Apache (thats an HTTP server I think) with virtual hosts and stuff and even Im not sure how to do that. Ok if he hasn't purchased the domain name then <original site owner> is working on it and <other person> is being an A-hole....This needs further investigation! I cant say who owns the domain as the whois is under a proxy service. However, I wouldnt worry about that as tons of people use proxy services. Fairly sure that its the same person though. Aimee, I know what a proxy server is and don't you think I've already done a WhoWho at Network Solutions....sheesh! I didnt even explain what a proxy server was, I just said that the domain holder was using one. sorry <person 1>, you must have forgotten Aimee thinks she knows everything about anything computer related. That's why she's such a ringing success in life. It's just a matter of her choosing which high-paying job offer to accept. What the heck happened here? Bill3000 Jul 03, 2010, 09:44 PM Which part of it? Urgh, I meant Berlin, more specifically. Mirc Jul 04, 2010, 11:01 AM Urgh, I meant Berlin, more specifically. Ah, that happens to be the only large city in Germany I've never been to. :/ I'm afraid I can't give any first hand advice, but everyone I know tells me it's swarming with culture, (including lots of artistic stuff and fun stuff). In Germany in general I would recommend getting to know the people in a more intimate manner, if possible, rather than going to some really big events. The huge majority of Germans I met are extremely nice and friendly people, who will talk and drink a beer with anyone, and are fairly good at English, although they don't really trust their knowledge and therefore might need a bit of encouraging. So, long story short - better go to a bar or a small-scale concert with anyone you happen to know and spend a day meeting people and walking through town with a beer in your hand (that's legal in Germany), rather than going to some stadium to watch a football match. Not that I would know of you planning to do any of those, it's just an example of the two extremes I mentioned above. And make sure to take lots of pictures and upload them to the Internet! :D Do let me know if you find any must-see/visit place - who knows when I might end up there myself. :D aimeeandbeatles Jul 04, 2010, 02:26 PM Question: I was just in the living room for a few minutes. Bill3000 Jul 05, 2010, 03:30 AM Thanks for the suggestions, Mirc, although I wasn't planning on going to any big event if not simply for the fact that they tend to make my ears hurt and I don't want to make my hearing any worse than it currently is. Most major metropolitan centres these days seem to use recycled water, making the recent debate about it over here - which focused on Sydney, which is ridiculous since half the city already drinks recycled water, including moi - a display of facepalm-quality political discussion at its finest. To answer the question, yes, tap water does go through more safety inspections than bottled water, though over here some new regulations under discussion would change that to roughly equal in quality. taillesskangaru Jul 18, 2010, 04:54 AM Melbourne has the best water. :D azzaman333 Jul 18, 2010, 04:59 AM Melbourne has the best water. :D :agree: really Jul 18, 2010, 05:23 AM Can someone tell me what is the best way to go from Heathrow Airport to 30 Leinster Gardens, Bayswater, London? Heathrow express - fast (15 mins) but expensive (£18). Standard commuter rail (heathrow connect) - med fast (25 mins) med price (£8). Tube - v cheap but v slow, heathrow being the end of the line. The bus is kind of irrelevant since your destination is right next to the rail terminal. Taxi would cost more than the train and be much slower. If youre driving a hire car you want directions to leave the airport to the m4 eastbound (often refered to as the westway), and for gods sake take a care not to look for directions to "london" since three of the four possible exits are all labelled "london". Dylan is going on tour through NZ, Australia and Japan and he asks Petty if he could meet him while he's out there. Petty remembers enjoying performing with Dylan at something called "Fam Aid" so he goes "Are you kidding?!" and is happy to meet him. Bob Dylan then sends his tour schedule so they can meet up. The tour started in New Zealand on February 5th. Before Petty heads off, he gives this interview in LA. If it is an allegiance thing as noncon suggests then surely recent history would bar Free Staters from joining the British Army? Afaik it is a leftover from the Free state - when we became independent most of what is now the commonwealth was empire so there were no impediments to joining the military. Many Irish still served in the British military so we were given an exception and it has never been changed. wikipedia quotes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army#Recruitment) In 2008 Commonwealth origin volunteers comprised approximately 6.7% of the Army's total strength. In total 6,600 foreign soldiers from 42 countries were represented in the Army, not including Gurkhas. After the Gurkhas (who are from Nepal), the nation with most citizens in the British Army is Fiji, with 2,185, followed by Jamaica and Ghana with 600 each; many soldiers also come from more prosperous countries such as New Zealand, South Africa and the Republic of Ireland. There has been a strong and continuing tradition of recruiting from Ireland including what is now the Republic of Ireland. Almost 150,000 Irish soldiers fought in the First World War; 49,000 died. More than 60,000 Irishmen, more than from Northern Ireland, also saw action in the Second World War; like their compatriots in the Great War, all were volunteers. There were more than 400 men serving from the Republic in 2003.[19] |
