Hi Hurrikane.

There are several communities out there. Most well known is probably http://civ4.civplayers.com/

I run another league which may be a bit more "intimate" (players know each other a little better than on CivPlayers). You can find it at http://www.civmultiplayer.com/ (Civilization Multiplayer League). However, the downside is that at the moment, activity is almost non-existent. There is about a hundred members, half of which are active members, but none is so far willing to be admins to a degree that we can run regular games.

I can offer you a role as admin of a "league" on the site. This basically means you can setup games and members of the site can let you know through the system on the site that they are planning to participate. After a game you can let people know how it went, upload screenshots etc. This only demands that you or another participant host the game and take care of the registration and report of the game. I would be happy to introduce you to the system which has many options, but require almost no IT skills.

Well do you have a group that you play with, I understand that you are trying to promote your website; and I am interested in that offer. If you could send me a pm of more details, I could give you an answer about me becoming one of your admin.

I will send you a private email.

Well, promoting the site would be a lot nicer if there actually was some games planned and some activity :-) So I might not get a job in the advertising business at the moment :D Especially not by promoting other sites than my own LOL :D

Civplayers does have the advantage of having a high number of players and therefore the odds of having a game starting in the lobby at any one time to play in are much greater.

Right now even with the summer vacation season starting and Civ4 being a little on the old side, we are still managing 25 games per day played on the league.

So feel free to join Civplayers as well, there are certainly no rules stating you can't belong to more than one league.

Cheers

Precisely, CS, just my words. I admire the CivPlayers community (good work CS!) and think the community would not be the same without it. I have many times thought of joining, however I have never gotten around to it, other than just taking a good look at the site.

CS, a question if you don't mind: have you and the contributors on CivPlayers made some programming on the page/game so that the games automatically report scores back to the page? It seems to me that it is a possibility to do so and that would be a lot easier on admins. That would make ranking systems function fully automatically which I guess it does at CivPlayers? At CivMultiplayer.com the admin(s) need to manually report back - which can be good in some ways, because it is a more personalized feedback.

Also, do you have servers or do people themselves host games? CivMultiplayer will probably never (never say never, though) have the capacity to have servers with the only purpose to host games.

Hope you want to share some of your knowledge, CS - feel free to private email me the answer if you do not feel like answering here. I also respect if you do not want to answer at all. However, just know that I am not trying to take away members from CivPlayers. As you may know, I always (or almost always, anyway) mention CivPlayers whenever people are searching for leagues/other players.

We have a mod called the "Beyond the Game Mod(formerly the Game Monitor Mod)" that does report games to our server so that other players can see basically what is going on in the game, cities lost, scores etc. It could have easily reported the wins and losses too. We never did this not because we did not want too, but because MP mod loading in Civ4 was so not user friendly and had lots of issues dealing with Vista/7 UAC and file access permissions.

So we ended up just using the mod for our tournaments and Clan Championish Cup, because outside that forcing the random league lobby games to use it would have caused to many technical issues, and most Civers are not computer geeks.

We are certainly hoping that the mod system in Civ5 changes this and makes MP mods easy. We have plans for a lua based mod already and are just waiting for the game to be released.

Civ is a peer-to-peer game, so no there is not really an option to run "servers" not in the sense that WoW does or other Server-client games do. We do ask in our rules that all Civplayers games have "league" or "ladder" in the title so that players know they are league or not.

Thank you for the elaboration, CS. Right, no servers since it is peer to peer - that figures.

Sounds good with LUA and Civ 5 - hope it all works out!
