The file is about 1mb zipped... Finally finished and I hope it is worth the waiting :) Most of the delay was due to trying to animate that blasted cape on the horse.

Excellent unit. It's great to see that making Civ3 units still interests you. Are you also working with the fanatic unit which you posted in your preview thread?

Oh it's marvellous, absolutely marvellous! :goodjob:
(And I do understand how long it takes to animate cloaks and capes! ;) )

For stats, may I humbly suggest the following?:-
4-2-2, costs 60, requires iron & horses, comes with Monotheism, and upgrades to the Civ3 Knight? (although this may give it a short 'shelf-life').

I'm currently creating a Companion Horseman, and one day (after "Alex the Great") I want to make a Roman Horseman and a Germanic Horseman (Ostrogothic & Vandal), so the plan is to have the following upgrade path:-

Chariot (1-1-2, costs 20)
Horseman (2-1-2, costs 30)
Companion Horseman (3-1-2, costs 40)
Imperial Roman Horseman & a Germanic Horseman (both 3-2-2, costs 50)
Late Roman/Byzantine Cataphractari (3-3-2, costs 60)
Crusader (4-2-2, costs 60)
Knight (4-3-2, costs 70)
and so on....

Very nice! Now I'm thinking of having Specific units for only European or Mediterranean Civs etc. this will make the game a lot more interesting!

Wow, this unit is really an impressive piece of art. Especially the run and death animations look very nice (the run being my favourite). But why do you always make your animation play at such a low speed. I had to turn up the speed for the death animation to view it, otherwise it won´t even begin to play (in FLICster).

Great animation! Although if there's one criticism of this unit, it's that the lance and sword are too thin.

Kinboat
Nov 24, 2002, 09:57 AM
I thought I had the speed set at 150 for the death... I also had a problem playing it in Flicster until I touched the speed setting (left it the same just touched the bar)... It seems to play fine in the game for me, let me know if it doesn't for anyone. Thanks for the support :)

Hi Kinboat,

I love your Crusader unit and have added it to my game. Everything works great except the small pcx picture. It shows up as just a black square in my tech screen. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but the large pcx image works great.

Thanks for your help.

Colonel

BeBro

Yup, experienced the same. I think it is because the small pic is in 24bit, not 8bit. I took the freedom to convert it, below there is an 8bit version which should work :)

Great unit, btw :)

Yeah Thanks BeBro... I wish I could catch all these things before I post them, but currently I don't add my own units into the queue or anything. I actually haven't played it in a while except to test my animations...

Thanks, Bebro. I just added you small pcx picture to my mod and it worked splendidly. Thanks to you Kinboat; your work is great. No apologies necessary. :)

I wanted to bump this back up to the top because I have a quick question, Kinboat. I had tested your unit in my mod to make sure I could build it, but I never used it.

I just had the opportunity to use it this weekend, and I noticed that the animations for attack and death look like they're in slow motion. Would it be possible for you to speed these up? I remember seeing in another thread that you can set the animation "delay speed" or something like that?

Especially when the Crusader unit falls to its death, it's really quite slow and looks awkward.

Otherwise, it's great. Thanks.

Kinboat,

I was wondering if you could do another knight unit using this model or a variation of it. I am adding another Knight unit to my mod as an intermediate step between horsemen the current knight. I was hoping it would look something like the crusader because I like the chain mail look better for this new unit than plate mail.

So, if you could possibly either remove the Skirt from the horse so it looks soomething like this:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/Crusader_Knight.jpg

or in the alternative Change the skirt and teunic to something more colorful like these, in which case I will use the more colorful variant of the Crusader as my new Cavalier unit and the Civ3 Knight will remain as is.

Thanks for at least considering it. :)

Ok, I've played with this unit quite extensively and I have some criticisms:

1. The unit is too big.

2. The attack + death animations seem to be in slow motion

3. The lance is too thin, particularly for such a large model.

yeah i removed the lance attack so it only fights with a sword.

The lance is a spear.

Seems you´re a non-believer - this unit is great! :) :p ;)

Ok, to 2: load it into flicster, and change the speed yourself...

I for one don't think it needs changed. It would be a waste of time when he could be doing other units! ;)

Dec 24, 2002, 03:48 PM
This would be great, except that I already have a Crusader - a foot unit someone else did.

BUT...

This is perfect as a Knight Templar!!! Thanks Kinboat, this unit is great...

Kal-el

I am guessing he is talking about the AoK Knight Templar.

Kinboat
Dec 24, 2002, 10:39 PM
Well I knew it was slightly larger than the default civ3 graphics... Tough cookies, don't like it don't use it. As to the speed I noticed a problem with the death in Flicster but it seemed to play fine in my game so I'd suggest speeding it up in Flicster if you find it too slow. About the Spear (lance whatever you want to call it) it's to scale for the unit and I didn't have any problems seeing it (despite wearing my eyes out staring at the screen for hours)... Anyway all this is leading up to this: There are no plans to fix this at this time :) Don't know about doing another mounted knight unit... May look into it a little.

Kinboat, the animations are slow in-game as well. How does one change the flc in order to speed it up? Take out some frames?

BeBro
Dec 25, 2002, 09:49 AM
- load the anim you wish to change into flicster, select "View Anim"
- change the "Frame Delay" to any position (=playing speed) you want
- then select "Export", and save it as storyboard (you can´t save back as new unit flc directly)
- load this new storyboard into Flicster again, now you can save it as unit anim (flc) ;)

- make sure you exported it before with the changed frame delay (you can choose this from the export menu), or change the frame rate again before saving it as flc.

;)

If you mean Flicster, you can get it for free here:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10208

It´s a tool for creating civ3 unit anims. Make sure you´ve read the readme file before using it. I´d also recommend to backup all files you want to change...;)

Thanks, BeBro, for the excellent information. Animation speed was my only beef for an otherwise excellent unit!

Here is a resized version of the crusader (with the too thin lance ;)). It was requested form W.I.N.T.E.R. Note, the file includes only the FLCs. Just copy it over the old files. You have to download the original file too, if you need the icons and INI.

Special thanks to Kinboat for creating this unit!
