Here is the Spetsnaz unit:

http://www.kinline.de/models/civ3/spetznaz/spetznazlarge.jpg

For a full preview of all animations, click here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36399).
Everything you need to play is included in the zip file, although there is no scenario file this time. You will need to add the unit yourself to the game.
Please read the readme before you unzip the files.

Special thanks go out to Steph for creating the flc files and dog & J.Keller for the Spetsnaz description.

:) Wow, this unit looks amazing. It will fit perfectly into the game. :)

By the way, I was wondering where in Germany you were from. I was an exchange student in Darmstadt last summer.

you just changed your "current projekts" in your signature from chasseur to non, may i ask why.

Excellent!
A 5-stars unit.
I will give it these stats: Attack 16 Defend 16 +3 Hit points
Move 1 All Terrain As Roads, shield cost 200.
That should reflect it`s elite status.

Thanks for such a great unit, it far exceeds some of the animation done by firaxis. Can't wait for the other modern infantry planned.

Personnally, I do just the opposite, and give a -1 HP to my Elite units. For me, HP represents the number of casualties the unit can suffer before disappearing, and defense the chance it suffers casualties.

So a elite unit has less chance to get damaged, but as it as fewer people than standard units, it can be destroyed rather quickly if damaged.

In my mod, Archer, Crossbowman, Chariot, Knights, Special Forces, Helicopter and artillery all have HP penalty.

Since Civ3 is a symbolic game and not a "realistic"
such as Steel Panthers III I will not say you are
wrong and I am right.
The reason for me giving elite units exra hit points is that
for example during WW2 regular units taking 15% losses
were often (temporarily) knocked out as fighting units while
elite units taking 90% losses continued to fight.
Panzer Lehr were reduced from 13 000 men to 500 during
The Battle of the Bulge but was still a fighting unit.

No need to get into a fight, dudes! Just do it the way you want to. Both arguements have valid points.

BTW, another stounding unit, Balou!

Great unit Balou! :goodjob:

One small thing, though, in the Civilopedia entry it says Spetznaz stands for "Spetsialnoye nazranie", well actually it's "Spetsialnoye naznacheniye", which does mean special purpose in Russian. I know it does not really make a difference for non-Russian speakers, but I'm just making this point for the sake of accuracy. :)

Iīm glad you all like it. In my opinion this is my best unit so far :)

utahjazz7:
I live in the north of Germany. Itīs cold and rainy here.... (I like the cold weather but not so much the rain)

Yoda Power:
Iīll change it back to the chasseur as soon as I have some previews posted here.

W.i.n.t.e.r:
It would be nice to have more versions of this unit so feel free to modify it.

Scipio Africanu:
Nah, the Firaxis animations are better. Just take a look at the various death animations, they are very lifelike. I donīt think I could do some of the animations on the same level (or it would take forever - remember, in the gaming industry they always work with a strict time limit). But thanks for the praise anyway.

sgrig:
Thanks for pointing this out. So all mod makers who wish to be 100% accurate may need to change the name to "Spetsialnoye naznacheniye". Sorry for the mistake.

Iīll take a short break now and then begin with the "chasseurs alpins". But donīt expect this unit to be released before X-mas, december is a very busy month.

No pb. My goal was just to give other players 2 point sof view, in case it could give them some interesting ideas to increase what they get from the game.

Another reason behind my choice to recude the HP is to have more variety in the units, and to avoid having super unit with bonus everywhere. So I try to balance some bonus with some malus.

I understand your point.

I am reworking rules and units every week and that`s
one great aspect of CIV3 - it`s not a puzzle-one solution
game.
Neither is life but that`s another matter.

Balou, any word on your next unit?

Steph
Jan 16, 2003, 01:45 PM
He's still working on it. It looks quite nice. And I have 2 piece of news.
- It's no longer a French Chasseur Alpin, although it's tell French.
- It's not "your next unit", but "your next units" as he's currently doing two at the same time

Kal-el
Jan 16, 2003, 02:44 PM
Very mysterious. :)

Any chance that French unit looks something like this?

Balou
Jan 16, 2003, 02:59 PM
Ok, here is a first preview of the unit:
http://www.kinline.de/models/civ3/paratrooper/paratrooper3.bmp
Itīs a french paratrooper, although when I look at it now it could be also be from any other country, but it will definitely have a famas rifle.
The second unit Steph mentioned is a variation of it with an helmet in UN-colors (french "peace keeper").
I have no preview of this one as we still need to decide on the colors.
I also have a question there: Does anyone know the exact rgb-values of the UN color (I mean the blue color)?

As soon as I have some animations ready I will open a thread for the unit in the creation&customization forum.

Kal-el
Jan 16, 2003, 03:18 PM
Very Cool! Glad I asked. :D:D:D:D

Is he going to carry that pack into combat?

Balou
Jan 16, 2003, 03:26 PM
Yes, of course he will. Itīs only a small pack compared to the one from the spetsnaz unit.
Maybe I will delete it for the "peace keeper" because, as I understand it, those soldiers operate from a base somewhere and always return to it, so they donīt need to carry so much equipment along with them.

Scipio Africanu
Jan 16, 2003, 03:32 PM
I like it, I like it a lot. Of course I don't think you'll find any dissenters here :). Good work as always...

Kal-el
Jan 16, 2003, 03:33 PM
But my understanding is that most troops would drop their packs before entering into actual combat. You don't want to be hauling anything around that is going to slow you down. So, while they would have to bring all that stuff with them because they are working behind enemy lines and do not have access to supplies, it might be cool if they didn't have all that gear when they start fighting. Just a thought, but probably not necessary.

This was taken from the source code of http://www.un.org:

<body topmargin="0" leftmargin="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" bgcolor="#6699ff" background="/media/bluetile.jpg">

<table bgcolor="#6699ff" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%" height="100%">

I don't know what programs you are using, but I know that in Photoshop and Rhinoceros, you can select a color by inputting an "internet color" code. The color you're looking for should be #6699ff. After all, it did come from the official UN web page. ;)

Balou
Jan 16, 2003, 03:50 PM
Thanks Scipio Africanu. It took me a looong time to create this unit. Steph gave me a lot of feedback during that time.

I see what you mean Kal-el. The problem is that I would need to insert an animation somewhere which shows him laying the pack down, and this is a bit problematic because of my animation setup (the pack&straps are rigged to the body for easier animation - imagine to animate the straps during that action, not easy to do)
I also made the spetsnaz and modern infantry have the pack on all the time, I think it is acceptable.

Edit:
Thank you utahjazz7. I entered the code into photoshop and it gave me the following values: R(102) - G(153) - B(255)
Hopefully thatīs also the color they use for their helmets.

Kal-el
Jan 16, 2003, 03:56 PM
Yeah, I think I was just getting a bit to "Real" there. Ignore it, the unit looks great, and I am eagerly anticipating its release, though I am prepared for the wait. :)

Well, I did some further research. You can see in the html code that the background image is called bluetile.jpg I saved this file by right-clicking on the background, as you probably guessed. Anyway, I opened the file in Photoshop, and used the eye dropper to select the color. It's very, very, very slightly different from the other color. The code it gives is 669aff. The values are R: 102, G: 154, B: 255.

Uh-oh, I may be being to "Real," like Kal-El; although, you did ask for exact values. What am I trying to say? Well, either color should be good enough. ;)

Moreover, it makes sense for a paradrooper who has just been dropped in enemy territory wiht nothing to rely one than what he can carry until reinforcements can break through to keep is bag with him

Kal-el
Jan 16, 2003, 07:14 PM
yeah, I was just thinking he drop the pack at the beginning of attackA, but its really no big deal.

A piece of magnificent work

Fantastic download, everything is there, sorted
This is how all units should be made! I love it!

In my game I use it as a all-nation generic commando unit with 10/8/1 {treat all sq as roads} and {blitz} <-(untested yet); fits very nicely with paratrooper and marine; the trio of Special Forces

Sometimes I build it just for the sheer beauty of it
Keep up the good work! (and Firaxis blushing)

This I have to say is the best unit I've ever seen created.

Do you think it's possible to make a machine gun crew for those of us who are too cheap to buy the "expansion pack" yet? I'm looking for a unit to move out and lay down cover fire for my Modern Infantry, which is another great unit by the great one. I use this unit as my Special Ops unit.
