Ok, as Mikoyan suggested, it must be my turn. Bit of an ship bias, I'm afraid. Some of the quality is a bit ropey - it's all part of the challenge! :) [Next time I'll be ready - in case I win again!]

The 1st one is a Yamato-class battleship
The second is a old jet, no HUD, maybe an F4????
The third and fourth I'm clueless on, but the carriers seems to have Harriers on deck.
The 5th is an Iowa-class ship
the last I remember vaguelly, but can't be arsed to look up...

1: Not a yamato
2. Old jet yes, not a Phantom
4. Correct aircraft, but I wanted the ship :)
5. Nope

Stalin
isnt the 6th one a experimental ww2 japanese plane?
Nope, the national markings should give that away.

2. Hmmm A-6 Intruder? or possibly the F-14 Tomcat?
3. Its a soviet vehicle i think..

1.) Stab in the Dark, Bismark or HMS Hood
2.) a F-8? (I'm sure it's not the F-14)
4.) HMS Invincible
5.) Swedish... ~Pulls out Illustrated Encyclopedia of Military Aircraft and Jane's WWII Aircraft~ MUST be a rare one, can't find it in either!

Rodgers
Nov 26, 2002, 02:12 AM
Yeah - 6 has Swedish markings so I'd guess the manufacturer is Saab?

EDIT - are their planes called things like a Viggen or something??

MadScot
Nov 26, 2002, 05:11 AM
SunZsu:

2. No, older than those.
3. Not Russian (or Soviet, if you prefer)

Falcon02
1: wrong no of turrets for either
2: older than an F-8 too (yes, it's not a Tomcat)
4: no
5: (you mean 6) - yep, an obscure one I'm afraid

Rodgers:
Viggen was the 60/70ss Swedish Fighter. Other names have been Draken (the 50/60ss era one) and Gripen (the 90s/later one). But it isn't any of these.

Perhaps I've been a bit cruel with some of these pictures?

1.A Japanese one,Kaga-class?
2.Hm,Starfighter (F-104)?

4.HMS Illustrious or Ark Royal
5.a German one?
6.no idea

3. A South African one? Seemed to remember watching a doc yrs ago that when the S Africans began building their tank, they decided on using wheels, rather than caterpillar tracks due to the terrain they're expected to operate in.

ainwood

Kaga class is an aircraft carrier isn't it (Kaga and Akagi?) - although did have 8" guns.

#5 appears to have 10 primary guns. Is it a New Mexico class battleship (or did they have 20 primary guns?)

Rodgers
Nov 26, 2002, 06:38 AM
I thought S African amoured vehicles had their bodies raised high above the axles wheels etc to protect them from land mines (ie the occupants wouldn't be killed and the vehicle could be repaired by simply sticking the body on a new set of wheels etc)

Actually MadScot, you were supposed to post the new set of pics in the first thread... no need to start a new one...

#1 USS Montana class battleship

#2 ...:hmm:...cockpit of a jet-fighter? :D

#3  Now this is funny.

That is the APC type 2/14 Inf battalion rode in (borrowed from the Malaysian UN MalBat) during the October 3rd/4th battle in Mogadishu. They drove us through a horrific mile-long ambush, probably saving many American lives (while I was in an un-armored Hummvee, btw...).

The Malaysian version had a smaller turent, with machine guns.

Not 100% sure, but I think its made by Germany, and called a "scorpion"?

#4 HMS Invincible?

#5 USS Nevada class battleship

#6 A very cool looking plane, but I have no clue what its called. :)

2.) F-86? or F-80?

MadScot
Nov 26, 2002, 05:26 PM
OK, the correct answers so far:

1. Not Montana.
2. I realise this one is a bit unfair!
3. joespaniel - Malaysia uses the Thyssen Condor APC, which is a 4 wheeled vehicle with a small turret with a 20mm and a 7.62mm. I suspect that must be the vehicle you recall. They don't, as far as I can tell, operate this one - not as of the early 90s, anyway. (K-D is on the right track)
4. Thorgalaeg gets the second point - Principe de Asturias indeed
5. USS Nevada herself, so a point to joespaniel (ainwood - NM had 12*14 inch)
6. SAAB J-21A (animepornstar scores the first point)

Sorry Mikoyan, didn't realise that I should just add to your thread, dummy that I am.

So we have a 3-way tie between animepornstar, joespaniel and Thorgalaeg. Still unidentified are #s 1, 2 and 3. I think once 1 and 3 are sorted I'll have to give in on 2. Like I said, it seems sily in retrospect, although someone could yet get a lucky guess.

Below is the Condor APC

Globber
Nov 26, 2002, 06:11 PM
Ok, the 1st one is the true Iowa-class, and the jet is a Mirage maybe???

MadScot
Nov 26, 2002, 07:24 PM
Sorry Globber, #1 isn't an Iowa either. Nor is #2 a Mirage (of any kind).

I am feeling generous for #2 so:
There is a clue on the armament panel in the upper left hand corner - the resolution isn't great - I had to reduce the pixels to get the picture a decent size - but there is a clue there, if not several.....

and to summarise #1 so far: she is not (by class):
Yamato
Bismark
Hood
Kaga (which was actually a CV, although laid down as a BB with 10*16" in 5 turrets, and converted on the slips following the Washington Treaty and damage to the carrier Amagi in an earthquake)
Montana
Iowa
there's more info in the picture, so no clues yet for this one.

Globber
Nov 26, 2002, 08:10 PM
wait, that wouldn't be the Scharnhorst, would it??? the back looks wrong..... and btw ppl, the Montana never existed, so there's no pictures of it... duh

MadScot
Nov 26, 2002, 09:30 PM
Not Scharnhorst, sorry.

As a bit of a hint, start checking out the secondary armament and the amount of tertiary and smaller stuff.

Is #1 a Rodney-class BB?

Kennelly
Nov 27, 2002, 09:46 AM
I think No.3 is a 'Ratel' from South Africa.

jeriko one
Nov 27, 2002, 10:28 AM
no.3 is Ratel FSV90. You`re right.

joespaniel
Nov 27, 2002, 05:02 PM
Mad Scott -

I'll take your word that it was the Condor, the 4 wheel seems right from memory.
They look very similar except for the 6 wheels on yours.

As for #1 -

Its not the Montana class (duh, thanks Globber), in fact its not even a battleship, though it bears a resemblance to the South Dakota.

The guns on the bow gave it away. Its a cruiser, and I think its an Alaska class.

MadScot
Nov 27, 2002, 05:15 PM
Kennelly gets #3, with a brownie point to jeriko one; yes, it's a Ratel 90, South African fire support vehicle. I like the look of the Ratel family.

And joespaniel roars into the lead - yes, #1 is in fact USS Alaska. I thought that one might lead people astray into the BBs.

So the only one left now is #2, which I said I would give the answer to once the other 5 were solved. Its 7pm EST now, I'll give the answer by midnight, to give the pack a chance to catch joespaniel. If no-one gets it the scores will be:

joespaniel : 2
animepornstar : 1
Thorgalaeg : 1
Kennelly : 1
honourable mention: jeriko one

so joe should be preparing his selection; it's likely to be his turn next...

joespaniel
Nov 27, 2002, 05:16 PM
Aw crud...

MadScot
Nov 27, 2002, 09:46 PM
OK, it's all over. No-one got #2, so here it is.

First of all, the clue:
This is the weapons panel from the upper left hand corner, blown up slightly:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/weaponpanel.jpg
as you can see, there is a line drawing of an aircraft from the front (or back) with the switches arranged below it - where the weapon stations would be. Pretty unusual shape, really...
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/hunter.jpg
The cockpit is of a Hawker Hunter. Since it has 4 weapon stations it's likely either a Mk9 or an export model; I'm not sure exactly what mark.

So, congratulation to joespaniel and thanks to everyone who 'played'; over to you, joe!
