Good one! The national heroes are indeed fearsome. I think the Principality hero carries the name "The Count". He doesn't look as scary as the Collective Hellbeast though.

Honestly, the Collective's national hero looks like something come out of Star Wars :D Maybe one of the imperial's cargo went to the wrong galaxy, or went through a time-space wormhole...

The 3rd picture, is the smaller scope of the known world (compare to the 2nd or 4th pictures)? Is this map already in the mod? I see that is represented by the 1st picture, what's the size of this map? It looks like you chopped and take only the top right corner of the original big map?

Yes! It was the first map I ever made for the mod, and all the other maps were expanded from this one. It is still playable in the scenario "The Collective War". The size is Standard, but I don't remember the tile count.

The Most Famous Battle in Fairy Tale History

I made these screenshots playing the Principality. Angvina attacked and I was fighting a bloody war of attrition against them that was leading to nothing. I decided to take care of them once and for all after a series of serious setbacks and loaded up with a massive army to take their well-fortified capital of Endelvein.

My troops met stiff resistance in Angvina lands, but were steadily pushing on Endelvein, finally also setting it under siege. It took me several turns to take it, but once that was done, Angvina was force to capitulate and the problem in the south had been taken care of. The city was renamed Victoria to celebrate the victory.

The Battle of Endelvein became the most famous battle in the history of this mod as well, since the screenshot of it ended up on the ModDB Front Page last week!

Yeah, I see that now. I must have had another version that went more to the south as well. I'll look around my files and see if I can still find it... But right now I need to go to bed, so I'll post it tomorrow if I can find it.

Otherwise I could cut and create a smaller map from the really big one, if you're interested. It would be no sweat either, because I've been working with the maps all evening and will be doing more map work in the coming days.

Yeah! That's the Death Roller. You can build one too. You just need a great scientist to build the Mad Scientist's Workshop and these kinds of odd units are buildable there. There are several other weird ones too. They are meant to be a bit of a curiosity on the battlefield, but fearsome indeed, so each nation can only field one at a time.

The smaller maps I'm creating right now are excellent stuff. They are fast-paced and really exciting. They are full of resources, meaning fast expansion for all nations and also leading to clashes early on. Every turn is packed with exciting events.

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_SmallMapGame3.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=SmallMapGame3.jpg)

A map of The Principality at the beginning of the scenario "Namyr's Golden Age". I am playing The Principality and Namyr is doing extensive expansion in the south, much to the rest of the world's disgust. I am best friends with Gregory Lyssander of The Collective. Only that fact is a rare situation.

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_SmallMapGame2.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=SmallMapGame2.jpg)

As I am building my army and cities to bring my Kingdom into fighting condition to take on mighty Namyr, old Gregory has his own plans, marching up with a moderate army in the neutral lands separating the three nations.

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_SmallMapGame1.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=SmallMapGame1.jpg)

Gregory takes the spearhead and marches his forces straight into Namyr, declaring war. I send my dragon and all of my army of knights in support, and so begins the great war against Namyr where The Principality and The Collective march side by side against the common southern enemy!

Nice, looks interesting. In every game I've played, The Collective always bites The Principality's behind, and I happen to play The Principality. Even The Black Banner betrays me when he is pleased with me.

Le Sage

This is a game of betrayal. They will bite you where you're weak. The secret is to never been caught weak. Sometimes I've been the point leader and been attacked still by the nation at the bottom of the list. The fact that you have the same Religion often doesn't matter either. Not even defensive pacts. I was once attacked by a nation that signed a defensive pact with me on one turn, and charged on the second!

Some of these guys are really aggressive, but others can remain good friends too.

I was away with my main army in the Yatenga Lands, destroying and occupying it, when this happened in the namyri north. The Principality declares war and takes the city of Deema without much resistance. The enemy's army of knights are pouring into Namyr!

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_Civ4ScreenShot0009-2.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=Civ4ScreenShot0009-2.jpg)

The road into central Namyr seems open for the Principality knights, and while the main Namyri army is pulled back from Yatenga, after their victory there, and new troops are raised in the homeland, the guards in the north scramble their small numbers and march out.

This guy is a frigging hero. He has beaten off at least five attacks by Principality knights. He's a lone spearman heavily entrenched in forest and he even does a few successful counterattacks. This guy saved Namyr before dying an honourable death.

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_Civ4ScreenShot0010-1.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=Civ4ScreenShot0010-1.jpg)

Finally! The Main Army has returned after its campaign far away and is now prepareing for the counterattack to retake our territory and teach those proud knights a lesson never to be forgot! The King stands at the front of the Namyri army and calmly lets the catapults work on the fortifications.

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg)

Whow! The enemy shows up with reinforcements! It's now or never. Charge, gentlemen! The King leads the final charge that breaks the defence of Deema and the garrison is slaughtered in revenge of the Namyri garrison that was slaughtered when the enemy took it!

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg)

Ha-haa! Vengeance at last! But the enemy's line is still intact; we will now make a counterattack and turn them over.

The new scenarios that I am building right now will be exciting stuff. Here are some pictures from the New Collective War scenario. Just as the original, this is very, very exciting and hard-fought. I am playing the Principality which has to stand and survive the initial Collective onslaught, while my allies to the East do nothing but bide their time.

Collective hordes swarm into The Principality, meet noble, stiff resistance in a series of major battles, but ravage the entire northern part of my Kingdom. Finally, I am able to get together a small counteroffensive and regain some territory, but I am unsure if I will be able to build any sort of substantial offensive to cause them serious damage. I need my allies!

I started a new game with the new test map with historical location as The Principality (too bad, it's not Oscar II, I love his traits). This is explored world after 347 turns on Noble (I think, or easier) difficulty. Two neighbors are eying me with cautiously: The Collective and Crytallin. We've never been in good term since the beginning, and Cautious is the best term I ever get from either of them (The Collective was annoyed initially). Being sandwiched is not a good situation... One of them must go.

I've been building armies to attack one of them, but need to make sure my other end is covered just in case if the other decides to join the fray. The good thing is that the elf nation Federation is an old buddy of mine, as well as Elchers and Thormshammir are on my good side. So in the worst case scenario, I think I might be able to request help from my friends.

Nice. Both the Collective and the Crystallin are famous backstabbers. Beware so they dont charge in as soon as you declare war on the other. Keeping a substantial reserve for defense on the other side is advised.

Damn those Elchers seem to be doing fine in the west. It's good that we soon get the Vestalla as a counter against them on the western frontier...

This is the new Gregory Lyssander. The old one looked a bit too plain. He's wearing the imperial Robe of Tamriel in the Elder Scrolls, and if there's anyone in this game that deserves that robe, it's old Gregory.

A total make over, huh? The new one looks almost a serene venerable old man. But I guess you can't never judge a book by its cover. It's usually the quiet person who is the most dangerous one.

On the other hand, The Emperor looks almost young/green and a little too handsome or even pretty? :D I'd expect a crazy young man like Civ4's Alexander, but I guess we need the Empire to fight on the good side, hehe... Although I am sure the emperor would have some corpse inside his closet as well. Speaking of which, is The Empire a rebel out of the Principality, like coup d'état, and gobbled up the Federation?

Le Sage
Aug 21, 2010, 01:19 PM
The Empire is really a Fairy Tale EU. It was supposed to be a union of the free and civilized nations, that, after the First Great War, combined their efforts to guard against further such great conflicts. The Union seems to have failed in some respects. The Crystallin were never incorporated, and the Viking remain in their homeland in the north, although these two powers are indeed associated with The Empire.

At the Second Great War, the Crystallin and the Vikings finally vassalized and paid tribute to The Emperor, as unity was the only way to save the free world from the darkness in the East. My vision is that the Empire ends the game as a true unified, one state with the initial "good" nations in combination. At the end of the game and the victory in the Great War, they will also have liberated Angleeye and reinstated it as a normal kingdom - and a part of the Empire. I haven't described these last events as yet though, and I don't know if I am going to either.

I'll leave the continuation of the story to Fairy Tale 2. ;)

I finally conquered all of the Crystallin's cities. Fortunately, The Collective didn't take the opportunity to strike at me when I was busy with Crystallin. It was a two part war, as in the middle of the campaign, I had to declare peace due to the increasing number of the unhappiness citizen caused by Regent's Statue of Crystallin.

I don't normally take a vassal, be it a beaten enemy or weak ally. If I can take it by force, then I shall do so. I will only take a vassal if the nation is quite a bit distance from me, or I don't see any advantage controlling their land, or I need a buffer state between me and the mightiest enemy.

One of these days, I should take time to sign up for a free image hosting account...

Really nice screenie. And that's a good main army you've got going there too! That veteran Grande Armée, can probably take on the Collective very efficiently too.

I use Photobucket for my pics, but there are loads of sites out there to use. It makes it easy to publish pictures on forums like this too! Recommended.

OH yeah, I have veteran swordsman that are imbued (lack of word that I can think of) with Great General, they can kill anything in the city with 4 level of city-attack promotion. Of course my Goblin Avanger (I think that's the name) and Princess are also veteran by now. However, you can't imagine how many catapult I've lost in order to bring down enemy's Goblin Archers's Strength before my army rush in the cities. I can't wait until I have a mage that can bring spells into the battlefield (very soon).

Gregory has some powerful units, like Deathroller, and that mecha-like unit. I'll have to be careful with my line of attack; better make sure that my army aren't caught with pants down in the middle of the fields.

Le Sage
Aug 22, 2010, 12:34 PM
The magician is one of the absolute best units in the game. Once I held up an entire large army with just a magician and a spearman in a castle in the countryside; the enemy didn't move and didn't attack either. Our Magicians were just pounding away at each other and it was a real artillery duel. Really realistic for medieval warfare too; and I think it was the turning point in that war, because he had invaded my land and pushed deep.

Get those magicians pumping out as soon as possible! There are later game upgrades to the magician too. I believe he gives even more collateral damage.

So I started the game of The Rise of Zuur scenario. I have to say they've got very powerful infantry for conquest. However, the demon lord is not up to my expectation. Even though he is quite intimidating, but he isn't as fearsome as some other units in the game. Oh well, he is still awesome for wrecking havoc the battlefield :D

 Don't you think Sauron is fearsome enough!? :D

I should change that hero unit. It began as a kind of a bad joke. Or rather, leave him there just for the hell of it. :crazyeye:

Preview of Angleeye

Some Preview Screenies of the Kingdom of Angleeye, which will be included in Version 10 of Fairy Tale. I played a testgame up until the outbreak of the first really big war, which will be fought against the Principality, and will be a hard - but very much fun - nut to crack.

So I decided to zoom in to Hellsgate, since I am in a conquest to conquer the collective asses of, well, The Collective. Then saw the huge tall tower. Is that... Saruman's tower? :D

http://i837.photobucket.com/albums/zz293/SoullessNeko/Civ4%20-%20Fairy%20Tale/th_Sarumanstower.png (http://s837.photobucket.com/albums/zz293/SoullessNeko/Civ4%20-%20Fairy%20Tale/?action=view&current=Sarumanstower.png)

Also, you can see the font I am using (Arial Narrow), it's not as small as Civ's original's font, but still slimer than the font you were using initially. IMHO, it looks nicer on the screen, though some may hard to see due to the transparancy skin you have for the game's HUD.

Le Sage
Aug 29, 2010, 05:44 AM
That font DOES look a lot better. I will change it to that one in the main game too! :goodjob:

And yeah. That's Saruman's Tower. :D Here it takes the role of the Collective Great Hive. The building gives a huge advantage for the Collective to pump out troops and also reduces war-weariness. Along with the smaller Hive, which you also see in there to the left, this is a lethal combination. Watch it when you go up against the walls of Hellsgate and go well-prepared!

I tried out a game playing Zuur tonight, but it went straight up Crap Creek. Getting Zuur going is no easy task, and it will indeed take a better player than little old me. Can anyone get it going good for the Zuur? I played them on the Age of Fairy Tale scenario map which is found in the 80x65 maps in the Playtesting scenarios recently released. I couldn't even conquer Krax and lost the battle in the last screenie and had to retreat. Sigh.

I did play Zuur, but it was the Rise of Zuur scenario, where Zuur already starting with several cities on the mainland. That one was a breeze, as Krax was the first one to be absorbed, then Elcher. After that, it's easy to conquer the rest of the world.

However, I've never started with a game where Zuur only have a single city in the island. That could be very hard considering the lack of hammer in that island.

Le Sage
Sep 01, 2010, 12:12 AM
Yeah. It is; when I had founded my second city, Elchers, my neighbour, already had four. But it should be a possibility to turn the thing around, since the Zuur get pretty good units and are able to go on conquests. Krax should be the first one to be conquererd.

The Angleeye Pass

Playing a testgame as the Empire against the united front of the Zuur and Collective. The enemy is swarming out of the Angleeye Pass, directing his march on the Imperial homelands, while our forward company in the fort makes desperate but effective resistance. The Imperial Amry is being built in the ruins of the Black Banner, but reinforcements are intercepted by the enemy and the time has come to pull back in retreat and fight another day.

The Invasion of Namyr. Edward Longhorn's Principality armies are on the march, warring with both Namyr and Angleeye. The armies of the Black Cross march south first, defeating Namyr, as seen here at Dembers, and then they turn west, to march against the all-powerful, splendid kingdom of Angleeye.

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_ForeignAdvisor.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=ForeignAdvisor.jpg)

The political situation in Fairy Tale is always interesting. There are always wars going on and deals to be made, weaknesses to be exploited and friends and foes to be gained.

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_testGame1.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=testGame1.jpg)

The Crystallin and the Elves are deadly enemies. Look who just showed up on the shore! It's SaibotLieh's Death Angel!

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_testGame2.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=testGame2.jpg)

Time to go to war against the Dwarves. The war is well-prepared and our armies stand ready. The Hellbeast's mission will be to take this town. Don't worry. He has artillery marching up behind, and the Black Dragon is flying in to support.

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_BattleOfThorshammir.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=BattleOfThorshammir.jpg)

The Eastern Dwarven cities give stiff resistance, but fall and the Angleeye armies take Thorshammir after an effective campaign. In the west, the Dwarves are locked in combat against the Heroes army and only at the very end of the war can the Hellbeast march into Jormunargandr.

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_PointLead.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=PointLead.jpg) http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_OnTheOtherSide.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=OnTheOtherSide.jpg)

The war against the Dwarves need to be ended at that point though, because the threat in the east, The Principality, is again raising its ugly face on the horizon. They are gathering great armies on our borders, and it might be a good idea to teach them a lesson at this point, for Angleeye's armies are of the highest quality and capacity and if we're ever going to wage a war on the Principality - it is now!

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_TheQueen.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=TheQueen.jpg)

To celebrate the peaceagreement and the Angleeye taking of point lead in the world, the Queen is also born! Yay!

http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_Map-2.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=Map-2.jpg) http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/th_MarchingOut.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/ac96/Antiscamp/?action=view&current=MarchingOut.jpg)

During the years of peace, Namyr rises all of a sudden and vassalize the old arch-enemy of ours, The Dwarven Kingdom, and they also take the point lead. Namyr is expanding at an alarming rate and not only Angleeye, but also Elchers feel threatened by the new superpower. I have befriended Elchers and fought alongside them in a small campaign against the Kraxantine, and I now see a great world war on the horizon with Elchers and me allied against the looming threat of Namyr. Krax is vassal under Elchers and Tanite and Kharrorch are my vassals, while Namyr has two vassals on their side as well.

That could be very hard considering the lack of hammer in that island.

What about giving them some sort of 'Dummy' building not a single civ can build and which does not show up in the civilopedia. Put forexcample the UB part on NONE as replacement for the ZUUR_ISLANDSTART dummy building for all civs so they will not be able to construct it. Give it the same effect as the Easter Island statues and then add it to their first city. Problem solved ;)

Edit:
And the Sowied sea... is it partially named after Soviet? It would make sense as it is indeed the northernmost and coldest of the seas there if I am right, maybe resembling a bit the Baltic with it's Fresh-Salt water fusion...

Le Sage
Oct 20, 2010, 12:37 PM
That's a bleedin' good idea, VeBear. I'll give them a special building and place it in their Capital in all the scenarios where they need to get off the island. I don't need to place it in random map games at all, since they function normally there.

Yeah. I don't remember, but it could indeed be the "Soviet Sea". I chose names of real places and changed them into something quite else when designing the first maps and civs. Like Namyr, is really Namur, a Belgian city. Ost Weld, the Principality Capital is another form of The West Weald, a region in Oblivion and so on...

The Colony's Last Stand

Now I remember why I started out on this mod in the first place and what really got me going during those first fledgling days of Fairy Tale. Scenes like these below.

I am playing the Crystallin Matriarchy and have founded a colony on the other side of the ocean at Urfjord in the very north. It's a rather successful colony in a peaceful and lonely part of the world. I thought. In the meantime, the Collective is expanding to the west, they conquer the Dwarves and found a colony of their own near my settlements.

All of a sudden they swarm over the border with some really dangerous and scary units. This is what Fairy Tale is all about. There, they stand, my peaceful defenders, the last outpost of Civilization, being invaded by these horrible hordes of evil forces from a warlike and aggressive nation. Standing alone, defending civilization, justice, peace, home and gods in front of an overwhelming enemy of never before seen evil calibre. This is what it's all about. Heroes writing Fairy Tales!

The colony makes good defence, but when the Collective sends in its ships, and it's no longer possible for me to send my own reinforcements over the water, the end is quick. At least I took their hero and the fight continues.
