After a patch 1.21f, it takes longer for us to research. Therefore, at the early stage of the game, it takes 40 turns to research a tech no matter what we do.

Thanks. I have had the latest patch for a while and it seems that in other games, increasing the percentage of science spend would reduce eg Alphabet from 40 turns to say 25 or even 20 depending on the start position. Am I getting upset over nothing?

It depends on how much science you are generating. Alphabet is one of the more difficult ones to research. If you only have one city with one or two people then 40 turns is reasonable. You can still research it but I would set the slider at 10% or so to get the cash. You will still get the tech in 40 turns. The other choice it to develope a cheaper tech.

And if I have an unhappy citizen in my kingdom, I would set the slider to zero % and turn that unhappy citizen into scientist.:) My empire just needs to produce 1 point of research and I will discover any tech within 40 turns.:) That would give me plenty of extra cash in reserve.:)

Moonsinger, great suggestion. I will have to try it with the next game I play.

Phaedria,
As Moonsinger said, 40 turns for a first tech isn't that uncommon. Especially Alphabet is pretty expensive. I suggest you download Crackers Quick Start Challenge scoring sheet in the QSC GOTM13 thread. It contains a tabel with al the relative values of the ancient era techs. (IIRC pottery is the cheapest in beaker terms.) You can pick the cheapest tech and fiddle around with the slider again.
I also think level matters, so if you normally play regent and the GOTM is monarch it will take longer to research the same tech.

THANK YOU. All! I had not thought of the increased time to get each tech on the more difficult levels. And Moonsinger - What a great idea! Thanks for everyones help
