I'm really tempted by this, but what happens if D2D disappears at some point? Will the fact that I've registered the game on Steam allow me to redownload from Steam? I have the same concern. As tempting as the discount is, I want to make sure I know what I'd be getting into with Direct2Drive. If D2D is essentially selling a license key only, whereas the game can be redownloaded, archived, and patched via Steam, I think I'd be fine with that.

ZimbuTheMonkey
Aug 25, 2010, 01:35 PM
D2D is the middle man.

They send you the authentication key (just like those found in retail boxes), you unlock the game on Steam. From then on, you don't deal with D2D because the game is linked with your Steam account.

This is basically just as if you were directly buying from Steam. But you don't get the Mesopotamia preorder bonus, instead you get D2D's bonuses.

Dearmad
Aug 25, 2010, 01:48 PM
So with steam, you can save a DVD copy yourself and then just re download the patches and such?

And what IS this first DLC they are planning? It's just that i get it now, ordering from D2D, regardless of what it is?

If the above are true, sounds good. Pulling the trigger I suppose.

I purchased a store copy of a Steam game maybe 3-4 years ago. I played it for maybe 2-3 weeks and then I never touched it again. I got a new computer back in January, and just last month I downloaded Steam again in preparation for Civ 5, and the Steam game I had bought years ago was available for me to download for free. So I don't imagine you'd have a problem here.

My worry is, what happens if Steam goes away at some point in the future? Will Civ 5 become unplayable?

The amazon suggestions are sometimes funny, though. Maybe they want to honour their company name from time to time?

D2D has been around for years (started in 2004, Steam started in sept 03). I've bought a bunch of stuff from them over the years. It's part of IGN (game sites, fileplanet, etc. I think they're rated the 2nd biggest digital distributor after Steam. They're not going anywhere. :)

D2D is my preferred digital source because it's a simple setup. Buy, download, done.

Given that the first ciV DLC is currently effectively free with the use of the D2D discount code, how many of you are opting for the Digital Deluxe version now? I was expecting to drop $50 on the game, so I'm wondering how someone goes about placing a value on DLC. Since I know, on paper, my computer will run ciV, I'll probably place my order today, one way or the other. I just haven't decided which edition to get.

I've never used D2D, but for many years on another game forum (SOTS) I follow D2D was considered a problem company that was the least desirable of the download options. One question to ask, because it was the main problem with that other game, is does D2D put its own security software on their version of Civ5. This resulted in D2D patches coming out much later than other down loaders since the patch had to be tailored to work with whatever security stuff they added.

It will use Steam. All versions of Civ V use Steam. D2D sends you the authentication key, you unlock the game on Steam and then you don't deal with D2D again (until the first DLC pack).

I don't know how many times I've repeated this in the last few day...

with regard to Civ4 D2D and Steam have been the only decent distributors of the digital version of the game* (digital distribution of Civ4 having been utterly, utterly and completely botched by Take2) - as such D2D may not be perfect but certainly was not one of the problematic distributors if one judges from the experience posted on this forum.

True.

But it will be even simpler this time around since the game uses Steamworks (i.e. the only way to play is through Steam). So D2D will not offer its own download, but rather send you a key to unlock the game on Steam.

Yeah, I've already had steam downloaded in preparation, but on the D2D website (where it shows my purchases) I can only download Civ3 Complete from them (which I am not going to bother with).

I checked my emails from D2D and the only codes I have are my order purchase codes (which I tried activating on steam, and didn't work). Lastly, on my D2D account page it shows "click the download button to receive your activation key". But there is no download button for civ 5. Just a pre-order button.

You are buying Civ V (on Steam) FROM Direct2Drive.

So yes, you will have the benefits of Steamplay. The Mac version will be free for you if it ever comes out.

Remember, D2D is just the middle man in this transaction. They are brokering the Civ V keys between Valve, 2k and you, the customer.

EDIT: They will email you the Steam authentication key (or post it on your account page on D2D) when it is released.

This is why I ordered ciV last night -- to lock in the discount, and get the free DLC. It's disappointing, though, that the demo is being released on the same day that the game itself is released in North America. The system requirements better be accurate.

We don't have irrational fears of digital distribution like some, so we're pretty confident and comfortable with our purchase.

That coupled with Firaxis' history and track record and it should be a safe purchase for most.

I haven't bought, but tried code and it still works. I may be wrong, but I the banner said it ended today. I've been trying to look into the best place to pre-order this game. I am usually a steam guy, but their deluxe package seems a little lacking. This one is much more robust AND I get a free DLC. I also own civ3, but not any of the expansions.

P.S (as ZimbuTheMonkey said, this game uses steam and this method I describe won't work for this game)
For those of you asking how D2D works with games. I have bought 2 games from D2D and they come in an install file. I am not sure if it can be installed offline because I was connected both times. The install files can be burnt to a CD though for manual back-up. You get your CD key when you download the game. Just write it down on the DVD cover, a piece, paper or in a file on your computer.

UPDATE: I just bought the deluxe edition for 49.99 by using the code. Time is 7:48 p.m. Canada/US central time.

Edit: D'oh! time stamp when i posted is automatic!

It'll work differently now, since the game in question is using Steamworks (Steam's fully integrated back-end for games).

D2D will send you an unlock key, you unlock the game on Steam.

Yes, the retail boxes will have an unlock code. But they also get a installation DVD, so you won't need to preload, you can just install directly from the disc.

If you preorder directly from Steam, I'm almost certain you will get to preload (it's very common for steam games).

No need to thank me, I just saw this D2D deal on redflagdeals.com (it's like a Canadian bargain hunter community), so I thought it would be a good idea to share with the Civ fanatics.

I'm just glad to see D2D selling the game at all. I was worried for a while there that D2D and other lesser known digital sellers were going to let Valve get away with a monopoly on the digital sales. I think it's a good move by D2D, and as a consumer I welcome their competitive offer that was made. The only disappointment is that this sale was restricted from several countries where Steam sales are still allowed, but this is 2K's or Firaxis's fault rather than D2D's.

Well, in most cases in the US, if you order a product online, you're not paying any tax. The only time you pay tax on an online order is if the order is within your own state. Also, I don't consider it as much of a problem (with lower-priced items) here in the US, since we don't get taxed out of our minds! :cringe:

Depends on the state, in New Jersey there's a law on the books that requires you to pay tax on any items shipped in from out of state, however you have to volunteer that information when tax season comes around and no one does that.

Of course, you also have to pay additional taxes on the sale of your home if you attempt to move out of state...it's all screwy. :crazyeye:

Following up on my find:

Yeah, the sales tax ended up being too expensive. Even with the promo code "SANDIEGO" it came to $63 for the deluxe edition. I can buy it off the UK website for £40, which due to exchange rates is actually cheaper when buying in Denmark. Still, those promo codes must be somewhere for the UK site too, right?

Anyone who can skip sales tax will of course find the better deal buying from the .com site and using the promo code (for a total of $50)

I have been scouring the net for promo codes for the .co.uk site, but can't find any... Anyone know where to find them? :)

EDIT: On another note, to the people who bought it on D2D, did you get a Steam activation key already? I hear there will be a pre-load very soon.

This offer was very tempting to me, however it's on D2D, not my favorite digital retailer, actually my least favorite from past bad experiences with them. It would have been nice to save the 10.00 but in the end I gave the money to steam at 49.99 once I found out that they were preloading.

Had the deluxe edition been shipped with a huge poster sized tech map, a 7" bobblehead Ghandi, and packed in a lunch box, I'd certainly have gone for it, I am a sucker for lunchbox games, but as it didn't, I coudn't justify in my own mind the extra money for the digital deluxe version just go get the civ that I would have been buying it for.

Edit, scratch the huge poster sized tech map, I've still got mine from IV and don't think i've ever even bothered to unfold it.

Because you say that you are living currently in germany, maybe you entered your home address but it has to match the country your actual IP is from? Just a wild guess.

Had the deluxe edition been shipped with a huge poster sized tech map, a 7" bobblehead Ghandi, .....

Oh wow, I would love a bobblehead Ghandi.

I originally ordered the boxed CE, but decided it was too much for too little. Cancelled it and ordered steam's digital deluxe, and then I realised i'd rather have had D2D's offer :(

I've asked steam support if I can cancel the order, but still havnt had a reply. I've heard D2D have rubbish customer service, but I'm not too bothered with Civ 5 as I really want this game, plus the free double civ DLC and Babylon, but thats if steam let me cancel :(

DownLoadable Content

Basically mini-expansion packs consisting of ... well we don't know yet.
Except one is promised by year end that will be 2 civs and a map pack.
Beyond that who knows, they could sell additional natural wonders for $1 more Civs for $5 each, new units and buildings for $1 a piece, or $10 for a really elaborate scenario.
It could be all or none of the above.

I have a friend who ordered the steam digital deluxe and has the free first DLC included with his. It's listed in his steam as "Double Civ plus map pack, release 2011"

i think i know what the problem is, i have a belgian creditcard and my paypal is linked to belgium. Gonna try a german creditcard and see if that solves the ip conflict and sales tax isseu as these isseus only come up after it tries to check out when i entered my financial info, same for the sales tax it only shows at the end of checkout.

PAX promo code still works fyi
