I would certainly like to participate (and I am a DDP player that's for sure!) BUT... I don't have much time to play the next 7 days. I'm certainly out for this weekend and have lots of tentamens (exams for non DPP players ;)) the next week. :(

So for some serious play I'll only be available from the 6th of December, (but I'll a lot of time to play then :)) and I guess that's a bit too long of a wait to be participating in this game, right? :(

Well, i don't have much time this weekend either and i think it will take some time to fill in the players. PBEM does not take that much time as players will have to wait for each other (see the other PBEM games). I can only play in the evening for instance. It wont take hours each day, more like a couple of minutes (possibly a few times on a day). ;)

Erikk, nice of you to start a PBEM game and I'd like to join, but I won't play any game with accelerated production or any stupid adaption just to make the game faster! After all, with PBEM acceleration isn't even necessary!

So I'm in, but without accelerated production.

By the way, if more than 5 people want to join, I'd suggest that these AI can be changed as well...

As a matter of fact, I'd like to play without any AI at all, but of course I shouldn't ask to many. ;)

Well, you convinced me ERIKK, I'll sign in too, but as I mentioned above if you guys want to start and play large sessions, I won't be able to. Maybe some turns an evening but never hourly sessions (before the 6th that is :)).

Name: Kemal
Favourite civs: Persia, Ottomans
Title, Country name, Noun, Adj: Default
I never play accelerated, so I prefer just standard rules (no acceleration, all vic. conditions plus culture flipping allowed), Archipelago large/huge map, all other settings random.

Matrix: Your avatar doesn't look good this way, are you sure you don't want to let your doom trooper respawn back to life again. Maybe you can find some supercharge in one of the secret forums ;)

Well 2 more, great!, we are on 4 players then. Let's wait one more day for some more players to join. Still 4 open slots! :scan:

- No acc production.
- About the AI players. I would like to see the remaining spaces filled up if any, especially when we play on an larger map. But with a max of 8 players a standard map would be big enough of course! But let's have most votes counted on this. :)

Just upgraded to 114f with the new crack (which needs the original (bought) CD), but gamemaking at gamespy still sucks. DirectIP will be a must.

Shall we all upgrade first (i can sent you all the crack) before starting this PBEM (I still like to play)?

I don't know if 1.14f is compatible with 1.01f, otherwise upgrading will be a must for all players, or you should downgrade your game to 1.01f again ;).

Have some problems with my e-mail now, should be solved quickly though. I'll PM the correct address to the players once we're going to start the game.

Last thing I wanna say for today (this thread grows like a madman! ):

During the game, I'll take a screenshot of the map (of one of the advisor screens) every turn, and I'll keep up a log. Both will be on my website, which is strictly forbidden for your eyes! ;)

Well, it was "partly" supposed to be a Dutch game but I am quite sure we will not make it to 8 players until tomorrow evening! So I am Ok with it. Please give your preferentials etc... and i'll sign you up. ;)

Disclaimer: I don't think so but if others oppose I like to hear it. I do not wanna be "the Boss" here :)

I'm in for this one, although I have no experience with PTW or PBEM yet. I even thought PBEM would be passing on the savegame by E-mail so there would not be any 'MP-sessions'. But now I understand we do make appointments for playing, and in those sessions the game will be tossed around by E-mail?? And I always play with random civs so I wouldn't even know what civ I'd like to be. Anyway, if I have to choose here are my prefs:

I don't know. I thought the Dutch version was the English version. But it might be a slightly different version, which, in that case, is causing the problem. I haven't seen this error.

There are no real plans but I for example will only be able to play in the evening. Just keep an eye out for email if we wanna have some progress ;) (I guess).

rodneysandy: join us, not being dutch is no problem for me.

I'm wondering if we're all gonna upgrade to 1.14 and all be sitting at the comp at the same time. Why not start an IP turn based game, goes a lot quicker than PBEM. Especialy in the beginning this saves lots of time (move worker, save, email, wait, open email, start mine, save, email, wait)

I guess we can do that also in the near future, that is the plan BTW (remember Agent Orange™) ;) . But the great advantage with PBEM game is that you are not dependent on all players being there. I would like to play a turnbased game sometime if somebody arranges a strict schedule and all players comply with it before starting up. (8 players will be tough I think.)

I hope this will be soon! :goodjob:

Matrix
Dec 02, 2002, 04:36 AM
We must at least play one turn a day. I doubt we'll play on till 2050 AD, but if so, that's 540 turns! That one-and-a-half year!

Now if that's the consequence of playing with the 8 of us, then that suits me fine. But I do think that especially in the beginning we should play Turn Based. Also because then you don't really have to wait that long.

Yet, as ERIKK said: the feasibility is questionable. And I also don't have the time for that this week.

One thing is vital: If you receive the PBEM, play is as soon as possible! After all, playing one turn per day means that everyone should play one turn per day.

ProPain
Dec 02, 2002, 05:24 AM
PBEM it is. One turn a day is np for me, I check my email several times day and I'll be able to fit in the odd turn in my schedule. Especially those early turns : pressing enter because your worker is busy and your warrior isn't finished yet :)

Furthermore I say lets go for 540 turns if necessary. It wil be some sort of record if we finish it in 1,5 years!

When can I expect the first save to be mailed?

I don't have the "patch" either, would you please send it to me.
I cannot see PBEM working with so many players,it would take far too long.I have watched the American attempts to do this and they have all fizzled out.
I agree with Matrix that the first part should be turn based at least. To do this we need communications,I suggest all using
microsoft network,we can then see when and who is on line also we can use the audio chat room, setting up a private one.
It is a lot easier to talk than to type, for me ,anyway.
I can send the microsoft programme to anyone that needs it.

Kemal
Dec 02, 2002, 06:32 AM
We should definitely play the entire game through, IMO. What's the point if we stop, say, when we have finally established our empires and approach the 100 turn mark? It may take long but I'll play 1.5 years and set a record if necessary.

One turn a day is a bit slow but I'm sure we can play longer sessions on certain times when we're all available at the same time (should be possible at least once a month, not?).

As far as my time schedule this week is concerned, as I mentioned in earlier posts I'm very busy and that will give some problems with other players I guess. For instance, Redwatch can play from 2200 hours, but I'm only available today from about 2000-2100 hours, and tomorrow from 1930-2030 hours if absolutely necessary. :(
I'll have more time though once I've finished all my tentamens on friday. :)

I would love to pay a 8-player turn-based game later this month but I'm not sure my connection is fast enough for it.

I am a little bit confused here!

You said you had Powergozer's crack, which did not work on your computer. The crack we are talking about is the same one.

You must do:
- run the 114f patch from FIRAXIS on your PTW version 1.01
- replace the .exe with the crack
- leave the CD in the drive

I cannot see PBEM working with so many players,it would take far too long.I have watched the American attempts to do this and they have all fizzled out.
What must I think of this? :hmm: :hmm:

Plux
Dec 02, 2002, 07:31 AM
I say we try the PBEM anyway, but maybe it would be wise if everybody could mention their daily most preferred time of play, so we can set up some sort of playing order.

eg:
propain: 15-16
Erik 18-19
Matrix 20-21
Plux 23-24

Catch my drift? Nothing obligatory, just prefs that will work for most of the days. For me it would be 23-24 or early night hours..

Well, we don't want that to happen. I'm sure you don't want to either, so...just be active. Play the game a.s.a.p. when you have received it, and then it won't fizzle out.

Is "programme" English instead of American "program"?

Anyway, as I read the other responses, I don't think turn based is feasible at all, so we'll just have to email fast these first turns.

In what ways do you keep track of your game?
I intend to write a log every time something happens and I take a screenshot of my capital (Strastad) and defence advisor (just for the map) every turn.

Then at the end (or when we all know the map), I can show you the animated gif I'll make of all these maps. :)

By the way, once two persons have met, they may negotiate via email, ICQ or MSN, right? I mean that'll be a lot easier and quicker than via messages in the game... (No I'm not that far... )

Usually I don't log, because when I played the QSC it took me way too much time. But considering the waits between turns time's not so much of a problem now, so I'll log too. Will be fun to read how we started when we finish the game june 2004....

Since we're probably gonna play for a while, I'd like to know against whom I'm playing actually.

I'm 21, student chemistry, loving the students life in the wonderful city of Groningen :) (though I live in the sleep town Haren). And though I got quite some experience with Civ3, I'm still not that good in it. :o Just look at my prestations of the GOTM. ;)

I'm an AI-student at Utrecht University and am also playing civ since civ 1. Have touched upon CTP but that wasn't as sweet as the real thing :) I am playing veteran division in tournament (which is slowly dying :( ), which means regent/monarch level.

This afternoon I also played some real MP games. Big Fun!

I'm a consultant and I also run my own company. Or more acurate I run it together with a friend. Which is great because we have our own LAN that turns out to be great not only for file sharing but it also accomodates MP very well indeed.

I've been playing civ since Civ I was released, played civII a lot, played some CtP for MP reasons. That was money well wasted because after 2 short games I gave it up. User Interface drove me crazy.

I usually play emperor level, which I win 99% of the time. Last tourny OCC being the exception (it's going to be a humiliating defeat...) For some reason deity is still out of my league cause I lose 99% of the times, or rather give up because it's hopeless. I play the tourny in the elite division (emp/monarch) and the gotm

Well, I am a systems develloper, working for an large IT services company. I have played CivII for, like two years. I discovered it quite late. Before that I played M.A.X. hotseat with a friend, most of the times in 12 hours sessions.

I am an Emperor/Deity level player, winning most of the Emperor games and losing most of the Deity games!

That's great Matrix! Fantastic site.

But there is one little thing that nags me....

Sultan Kemal... SULTAN Kemal!? Noooooo... ;) My loyal vassals now me (at least for now) as Shah Kemal of Persia.

You can add to Kemal's history that he can ponder on the problems of his still small empire watching a great lake/ocean, (Persia doesn't know how to explore the seas yet, nor can it miss the manpower to send a team of explorers round the shores). The Shah prefers the fresh breeze to the arid climate of some lands surrounding his capital. :)

Great idea, I might even be tempted to hold a weekly log of my game, something I normally dread to do.

If Kemal had posted yesterdayevening I could play right now, before leaving to work. You guys could wrap up the turn in daytime and start a new one then, with me joining again early in the evening, we might be able to finish the second turn. Just sounds like a good schema for minimal 2 turns a day!

Not exactly, Kemal is at the edge. He can also play in the morning.

I think I can usually play after Plux anyway. :) Except when I sleep at my girlfriend's, cos she doesn't have internet (nor a computer fast enough for Civ3). And that's what I will do most of the time from 9 till 20 dec. :undecide: I'm really hooked up to play between 17:00 and 18:00 then.

Maybe some people get the wrong idea here. One turn/day is fine, and if we can't make that, than we'll have to settle for less, but that too is ok, I think.

We just got a little over-excited that we may had been able to play two full turns today, but I guess that's a little too stretched. Let's just see and enjoy how the game progresses and take it from there..

I'll normally be able to play late in the evening from next friday on.

I had a tentamen at 9:00 hours today, that's why I wasn't available to play yesterday evening. I've got another one on friday so thursday evening I'll be able to play 'till 21:00 at best. :(

Just to stop anyone from getting wrong impressions: my starting location isn't a hopeless all-desert place, I do have access (well, in 10 turns that is) to one bonus resource and a little grassland. It's just not the all-cow dreamland I hoped it would be ;).

Well, as for now it looks like none of us had a good starting location! My starting place/site is OK but the vicinity isn't (bordering the jungle): got mountains and jungle to the south, jungle to the west, northwest and southeast. To the north, northeast there is water (???, cannot see too well), remaining the east which is yet unknown. My hopes are on better lands to the east otherwise I am f*cked allthough it is a little bit too early to say that. ;) I will post a screenshot in a while (need to learn expert-editing first). :)

I didn't start bad. I got wine and a river just beside Strastad. :D And plenty of grassland!

By the way, two turns in one day is still possible, but only if Kemal, ERIKK and ProPain are still available between 22:00 and 23:00. You don't always have to take that into consideration. ;) But it is doable.

I don't mind if we play one, two or ocassionaly no turn at all in one day. For me it's just fun to play the dutch PBEM. So I say no one should quit the game for the amount of turns he can play.

On the start, my start wasn't to shabby :), I like to leave it at that for now. On the other hand it's hard to keep things a secret anyway, f11 and the score will tell you a lot anyway.

Also, don't quit because you're performing badly. I mean, in that case your turn won't take long to play anyway. And it would be very bad for the game. On request, we'll kill you swift and clean. ;)

Just wondering.... How do you acquire a diplomatic victory in PBEM? Do you build the UN, say "vote please" and then demand that other players take their turn without talking to eachother?

Or, since other players get to do a turn untill voting is over, what if you're destroyed before the turn is over, but win the vote?

Should we come that far, and looking at previous posts I think we will, it looks like you've already earned Matrix's vote, Propain....

IF Matrix is still in the game by then...:scan: ;)

Matrix
Dec 04, 2002, 09:00 AM
Kemal, I have also no idea. And of course I'll always vote myself or abstain, and I suppose you'll do that as well (why would you do anything else?), so I think a diplomatic victory is impossible anyway.

When you load the game, and you're asked to give the password, press enter. Then you'll get the window to set up your password! As promised an update of the This is It!!! empire.

Now that it is the year 3400BC Ruler ERIKK has called his advisors to check on the empire. What surprised him was the following: allthough our science advisor says that we are 2nd in science and our scientific research is progressing very well due to generous funding, were are still moderately advanced!!!! Ruler ERIKK was very upset about this because his brave scout divisions have recently brought back a new technique of fighting from a friendly nearby tribe. Our soldiers are now capable of using a bow and arrow! :D
The question is: is our advisor gone crazy or are there other civilizations trading techs allready? Nobody knows of course, as it should be! :)

Game sent to ProPain to his email adresses! Matrix feel free to use some of this for your website if you want to! ;)

To the high ranking Chief ProPain! :)

ProPain
Jan 09, 2003, 02:45 PM
Chief ProPain decided to do a small write up of events now for you other players and our dedicated monitors like col.

4000 BC - The beginning
The mighty Iroquois found the city of Salamanca on the bank of the ProPain river. It's a beautifull location with grass, plains and cattle. The Iroquois chief can't ignore these good omens and sacrifices to the gods by consuming some (or actually a lot) bfirewater. Uch!

3950 BC and on - Our first steps
Our first priority is to know where we are. Chief ProPain dispatched his scout and orders a youngster to be trained as a scout as well. Our worker is immediately ordered to improve some of our land. The Chief himself spends this first few years getting rid of his hangover.

After a while we have a few youngster educated in the scouting profession. At first they are still unexperienced and are misled by the sight of old abandoned villages. Later they become experienced and competent. They find quite a few villages who are willing to teach us and even one that desperately wants to join us. Chief ProPain earns the honorary title 'the great hut popper' :)

In addition to all these discoveries, our scouts also gather information about strangers walking our ancestorial lands. It appears we are not alone. After long deliberation Chief ProPain and his counsil of medicine men decide to make contact with those strange people.

And so we conclude the first part of the history of the mighty Iroquois.

When circumstances permit, the Iroquois story will continue.

ERIKK
Jan 10, 2003, 02:01 AM

With the 3000 BC mark approaching fast, please remember to take a screenshot of the demographics for Matrix"s page.

Shall we also accumulate other data for the page ( F8, F3- screens maybe?) or just leave it at the F11 screen?

Matrix
Jan 12, 2003, 03:36 AM
What's F8 again?

Furthermore, no one will see any data given by my military advisor (F3)! :satan:

Kemal
Jan 12, 2003, 02:54 PM
I guess you're right about the military advisor, but what I actually thought would be nice is to grab the shots of F8 en F3 and have each player store them on their on PC untill the game ends, and then make them available so we can see when each player was stronger/weaker compared to others, thus better evaluating the game once it has finished (in a year and a half or so... :yeah: ) to see when the winner could have been stopped by the others.

btw, F8 is the score/power/culture histograph :)

Matrix
Jan 12, 2003, 03:56 PM
(Clicked "reset" instead of "post". :()

F8 shows histograph, which shows our score, power and culture of the whole timeline, so that won't be necessary. F3 doesn't show that relevant info either. Demographics really reveals most important info, and we note that every 10 turns already. ;)

The best place to take screenshots IMO is simply in the game itself (the big whole screen filling map  ), at the right spots at the right time that is. And what's also interesting for comparison at the end is of course the log. :mischief:

All optional of course. ;)

Kemal
Jan 12, 2003, 04:05 PM
The reason I thought the military advisor screen might be interesting is that it shows the actual amount of armies you have at a given time. So, if all players keep that noted it will be much easier to see when you made the (fatal) error to strike at your opponent, or not to strike and give the enemy time to build his forces to equal yours.

I know that the advisor tells you himself what your military strength is compared to another but I really don't have that much fate in the good man, since he has some difficulty assessing the (real) strategic value of a unit at a given time.

And yes, player logs will be very interesting to look at in the end, I even keep one for this game to look back at when the end nears (whenever that may be ;))

Matrix

Hmmm, Matrix you have a large population... Probably building a granary.., coz I do not dare to believe you had two free cities in the first 10 turns or so.

Anyway, if so, it seems a good idea with that free second city doing the normal early game stuff IMO..... This way you will rapidly grow and become the strongest civ. You are now officially on my "kill list"! ;) :satan:

The Americans report friendly strangers wandering through our territory. They are smiling to us and we are wisely smiling back ;) Our scouts report that is no end in the jungles in this world... This planet should be called "Jungle World".

Actually Erikk, you can keep track of capital city size in the f11 screen yourself. It's really informative and tells you when a settler has been built. You only miss one city out of 6.

The Iroquois are happily continuing their ordinary business of working the land, scouting the land and settling the land. It's quite boring when I come to think of it.
