View Full Version : 80 Gigs of pleasure
munzy76 Nov 29, 2002, 09:04 PM I have my new hard disk drive shipping to me as I type! I purchased an 80 GB Western Digital 7200RPM "Special Edition" 8MB cache hard drive. I got it for 115 USD and decided to go with that before upgrading my mobo and processor because my hard drive is constanly getting filled with downloads and I am tired of having to uninstall my games to make room until I can burn the stuff to CD. :)
Anyone else got new/used computer equipment, electronics, or plush animals on the way to their house?

munzy76 Nov 29, 2002, 09:09 PM Thanks, and for your info: I just put half the porno to CD-R....so it is only taking up 500 MBs on the HDD now. ;) :p
IceBlaZe Nov 30, 2002, 04:19 AM Im waiting for the inevitable P4-HT Pricedrop + Serial ATA release before I upgrade anything.
But I might purchase an x4/x2 DVD-R/W burner. (Editing Movies)
funxus Nov 30, 2002, 08:51 AM Any week now we'll get a new computer:D
Here's the numbers:
Pentium4 2,53 GHz
RAM 512MB DDR
Harddrive 120 GB (we have broadband:D )
GeForce4 TI-4600 (TV-out)
DVD-writer
My dad will rent this one from his job, and all of his workmates has got theirs, so we'll probably get ours soon too:)
munzy76 Nov 30, 2002, 11:02 AM Sounds nice funxus!
IceBlaZe: I would like to get a P4 HT and the Serial ATA sounds sweet but Intel keeps their prices up for a long time. I will probably end up getting a decent Athlon XP 1600-2000+ for a decent price. Eventually I will get one of those AMD Clawhammers and make a Dual-CPU system. The Serial ATA so far is vaporware. When it is fully supported I will switch to it if the price/performance ratio is right.
IceBlaZe Nov 30, 2002, 12:00 PM munzy, the thing is that I am in no hurry for an upgrade.
My current system has 20+30GB hard drives, 384MB DDR Ram and a 1.33Ghz Athlon.
More than fills my needs.
GenghisK Dec 01, 2002, 09:12 AM He he yeah pornmaster needs 80gig for his collection :)

cgannon64 Dec 01, 2002, 09:31 PM The title of this thread reminded me of this (http:///www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2002-11-04&res=l) cartoon. (Note: May not be for small children. :mischief: )

GenghisK Dec 02, 2002, 02:30 PM 404 error...
CornMaster Dec 02, 2002, 02:52 PM Western Digital?
Are you trying to throw your data away? ;)
munzy76 Dec 02, 2002, 04:07 PM :p WD is a good brand. IBM is the throw away brand now.
gonzo_for_civ Dec 02, 2002, 11:57 PM WD is pretty good. Maxtor is the next best PROBABLY(once you get them working of course ;)) and IBM just....ewwwwww........
munzy76 Dec 03, 2002, 08:43 AM I have had good experiences so far with my Maxtor 40 Giger. I have had one go bad on me but Maxtor sent out a replacement and gave me the chance to move my files from the old HDD to the new one. This 'new' one seems to be having problems now. It might just be Windows XP though or maybe it is just me downloading like a bandit. :D

What kind of problems? These are on dicount right now and I was thinking of trying Maxtor again after a few years breather from them.
munzy76 Dec 03, 2002, 08:56 PM I used to be able to download with DC and Kazaa, burn a CD, listen to MP3s, and browse the internet, all without a hiccup. Now when ever I try to burn a CD while downloading everything else slows to a crawl, even just minimizing windows. It may be the fact that it has been 4 months since I reloaded my computer....not sure. I missed my new HDD today. The FedEx dude wouldn't leave it without a signature. :( So I signed the signature card and he should leave it for me tomorrow. When that gets here I will load my system over again on my Maxtor HDD and tell you how the system runs after that. I figure I will have it complete by the end of the week.
Remember that Maxtor has a very good replacement policy....so you know that your drive will be good or replaced with no hassles for 3 years. Buy accordingly but no other HDD manufacturer has a better deal, that I know of.
damunzy Dec 03, 2002, 08:58 PM Damn, posted as the wrong guy. Hey gonzo, want to ban me? No, not this account, the one with the 76 at the end. Thanks. :D
Nevermind I got sunny to do it. ;)
Cartouche Bee Dec 03, 2002, 11:08 PM Ahh, Kazaa the file fragenter, ok thanks for letting me know.
damunzy Dec 03, 2002, 11:20 PM Well, I agree completely that Kazaa is a big file fragmenter and so is DC, but I have defragged my partition that my OS is on many times in a row. Plus I never downloaded onto my OS partition until after the slow down happened. Actually, I still don't download to my main partition, I download to D and then transfer files to C when I run out of room...plus I send most of them to CD before trashing the rest.
I just upped my swap drive up to 2048 MB. I had it at 0 in order to defrag it. Hopefully the performace will improve (and yes, I was having the problem before I set the swap to 0). :)
Portuguese Dec 12, 2002, 03:40 PM I'm going to have soon an Compaq 1525 (Portable P IV - 2400) :D
