A new Steam client update have been released, and the changelog is just this:

- Added support for Civilization V charity promotion (not visible until Civ5's launch).

sounds good, but no more clue heh

I may be an eternal sceptic, but is it just me who can't stop thinking this "charity" thing could only be some kind of way to evade taxes? I mean, it's a well know fact that companies donate to pay less taxes.

Look at the sales page for Civ 5 in Steam. It says money will be donated from the sales to some charities.

SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE: 2K Games is donating a total of $250,000 to four education based charities, and users' choices will determine how the money is dispersed: simply select your choice from the pre-selected charities during the install process. Source (http://store.steampowered.com/app/8930/)

Yeah. That's what I've said. Donating to charities makes your company pay less taxes.

It's still nice, but I'm sceptical about the good intention behind it.

Charitable donations (in the U.S.) are a deduction, not a credit. So they reduce your tax exposure by reducing your income. So it isn't as cynical as it seems -- they will pay a little less in taxes, but they really are making less money, too. :)
