So, was it?
Once upon a time I've heard the point of view that USSR could have transformed itself into democracy and stayed undevided whether the Gorbachev's reforms had been continued.

I'll express my personal point of view later.

No. The USSR had been fumbling too long, and the Communist economy was down the drainhole. I can't really say whether the revolution of 1991 was against the Communist system, or against the totalitarian government, but both were sweeped away in the revolution. To assume that the course of events in 1991 reflected the by and large views of the Soviet Union's citizens, then it is fairly safe to assume as well that a democratic system, however reformed, would have taken the shape of the current Russian government today.

Maybe a very slow Chinese-style change which would last up to the middle of the 21st century... Yet, as Toasty remarked, I don't think the soviet people would stand to wait this long... For those interested, read George Orwell's "1984"
