View Full Version : Is it just me or is multiplayer going to be WEAK?

The interface seems weak. There's only a couple games, and I can't seem to be able to join any in progress(EDIT: not true, JIP works, see following posts) like in Civ 4. People just sit in the lobbies waiting for nobody.

And I hear there's no animations in MP? I haven't even been able to try it out though because none of the lobbies I entered actually got around to launching the game.

Civ 4 multi was great! Why do I feel like we've just taken a couple giant steps backwards?

I'm pretty disappointed here and I hope I'm wrong since it was just released and whatever since I mainly plan to play multiplayer.

I think it needs a lot of work, but since more people care about Single Player they will just work on that (which is already a lot of fun).

Several reviews I have read now have praised the sp game, but criticised mp. It is clear that some work is needed to get mp up to a satisfactory standard.

However, I am sure I recall reading a post from 2kGreg saying that mp will be the focus of the first patch, so I remain hopeful...

I'd like to make a little correction to my OP. It seems you can join games in progress which is good! I just joined a game as Rome that was already at turn 7. I made my first move, but then it ctd'd. :crazyeye:

Ho hum... Oh well, I guess I'll try it again. :goodjob:

I launched a game by myself but nobody joined. There's no way to tell if the game you're joining is in progress or still in the lobby due to the poor MP menu screen. Games cannot be launched unless everybody hits ready, problem is, there's always one guy who is asleep, so very few games end up getting launched. It doesn't seem like they put much effort into MP which is very disappointing. I can't even tell the latency ffs. It's like MP was an after thought...

The lack of animations makes the game seem very stale and the auto-end turn makes things too rushed(atleast you can turn that off). Streamlined my ass, this is not cool. There's no animated characters in the diplomacy screen either in multiplayer. I'm not very impressed...

How did you join in progress? I was forced to quit a game due to a bug and could not find a way back in. Which is odd since I could have sworn they said somewhere that the AI would take over until the player reconnected.

Pure luck. I joined one game in the list and it automatically put me with the Romans and when it loaded a short time later it was already at turn 7 and the AI had been playing before me. Seems like 2 others were already playing. But I didn't last long until I ctd'd. :(

I haven't found a JIP game since. Just lobbies full of people struggling to ready up and launch the game. It's quite frustrating...

All we need is stability, a better more informative browser, and animations. MP will be golden then, because otherwise I'm really enjoying Civ 5!

Just wanted to chime in. The MP seems to have the same issues with everyone joining at the beginning of a game that Civ IV did. Also, I agree that their should be animations in MP because we no longer have a stupid amount of units to watch stab each other since one cannot stack units anymore. With the way combat changed in this game, I was really looking forward to playing it online.

Do you even REMEMBER the Civ 4 launch?! That was such a buggy, crashing POS that I couldn't believe it had been shipped in the first place in that condition.

Patches will come and things will smooth out... give it time.

seems like a very poor multiplayer game so far

it's so slow...

i doubt always war teamers will be popular with this

civ4 was slow, but u could at least use hundreds of units within a few hours

Someone should make a CivRev mod, that game had a good MP pace. Max game would be 3 hours. Do mods even work for MP? Probably not.

Right now you can't mod at all right? But from what I hear the mod tools they're getting ready to release won't be for multiplayer since it causes crashes and such.

How did we reach the point where we consider normal for a game to be released with tons of bugs and with multiplayer almost unplayable ? Apparently it's a fault of us consumers, who rush to buy anything at all....

its called the internet and hiring incompetents to staff your developer team. honestly just look at the amazing civ 2. AI? not always the best, but i never patched that game and it never crashed and i couldn't find any bugs. game felt entirely organic,

I never said it was normal or acceptable. But inform yourself, jeez. If a company has a history of releasing buggy games you should know about it.

Nah, I think Civ 5 is all about multiplayer. I get bored with playing against the AI pretty quickly. Nothing like a game against humans. So please, Firaxis / 2k... fix this ...

That is why it has been disabled for now, but when they patch it, it will allow us to create some nice MP mods.

The Steam regional game lists do suck, but that is not a design problem of steams, steam can make global servers if the developer/publisher asks for it. So this is a design decision of 2K''s not a limitation of Steam.

But as a not perfect solution you can join the Civplayers steam chat room and look for games, it has been very busy and functions pretty well as a replacement international lobby. And no you do not have to join the league to use it.
