View Full Version : Term 4 - Ministry of Culture

War is not culture!

As our cities grow, our people are crying out for some relief from the near-constant warfare they have been experiencing. The time has come to press for more culture to be instilled in our cities. Our people are smart: we are building ibraries nearly everywhere. But libraries aren't enough to make the people happy. Most of our citizens do not even have a Temple in which to worship!

This term we will try to start the development of culture in all our cities, to ease the paths of our citizens as they wend their way through this brutish world.

And I replied via PM, but your PM box is full. ;)

I will continue to accept applicants for about 47 more hours. Then I will choose from among those applicants. :)

As governor, I do agree that we need more culture! Other nations look upon us as barbarians as some cities have neither book nor hymn! I have put forth a motion to rush several cultural buildings in my province of Taliesin.

That's good. We are so poor culturly that our cities are very likely to be candidate to culture switch on the wrong side. Other governors sould do like you.

The culture department has my assurences that Padmativa will build a temple as soon as possible, perhaps after a settler. The city already contians a library, and may be a hot place to get American and English cities to flip.

It warms my heart to see Governors concerned about Culture. :D

After so many centuries of War! War! War!, it is good that people are remembering that Culture plays a very important part in a Civilizations growth and power. :)

Well, after much thought, I have decided on a Deputy. The choice was very difficult, given that all the applicants were well-qualified. But in the end, I decided to let naervod have his shot at it. :D

I will post a confirmation poll shortly.

Thank you all who voted for me and thank you Padma for letting me have this position. Is there anything you need me to do Padma?

naervod
Dec 10, 2002, 06:29 PM
Padma asked me to see which cities were in danger of CF-ing. I also took the liberty of showing which cities had no culture rating. I rated the danger of flipping on this scale:
White: No danger
Green: Small danger
Yellow: Danger
Red: Imminent Danger

Red
Nocsfiedera

Yellow
Androbius, Morgana

Green
Grandmastoria
Serenity

White
Eklektochitlan
Plexenburg
Dacula
Kells
Hakodate
Ise
New PDX
Cuernavca
Pensacola
Civanatoria

*Note: These are only cities that have no culture in them.

Also, mayors and governors: I cannot stress the importance of culture in this game. In order to suceed, we must have culture in our cities. To all governors of provinces with endangered cities: Please make culture in the endangered cities top priority, as if we don't get culture in them now, they risk being lost and we might never be able to build anything in them.

Dec 10, 2002, 07:42 PM
That's not an accurate picture in my opinion, as some cities, like Morgana, are well within national borders, and may be close to the capital. There is a culture flipping algorithm in place. Generally, cities from other nations have the greatest risk of flipping if they had greater culture, and are closer to their capital.

naervod
Dec 10, 2002, 07:52 PM
Morgana was a hard one for me to decide, but I put it that way due to the fact that Miami has large cultural borders that border with Morgana, which has no culture. I am considering changing it to Green, but am not sure yet.

Suggested build queue amendments- 460AD: (Military permitting)

1. Change Kyoto build to a library.
2. If possible, rush Kyoto library.

Kyoto is high risk for culture flipping, it's a long way away from home...

naervod
Dec 12, 2002, 01:49 PM
I think culture buildings should be built in Red and Yellow according to my key or Red and Orange according to Plexuses key. As for the chat rep thing: I will be able to make most of the rest of the TC's so I don't think we need a chat rep, but it is up to Padma.

Excellent work, both naervod and Plexus! :goodjob:

I agree with the assessment, and that we must get Culture into our Red and Yellow/Orange cities ASAP. Indeed, I am all for rushing a Library in Kyoto. It was the heart of the Japanese Empire for so long that it will be some time before we "out-culture" them there!

As to the chat-rep: naervod says he can make most of the remaining chats. My attendance is spotty, between work and family things. Hmm, it never hurts to have a third department member, just to back the other two up. Let me sleep on it. :D

I would like Culture to note the graphic I made of current cultural posistions of each nation. You'll notice that Babylon is the largest, and that might be of some concern in terms of culture victory (or in this case, our defeat). Perhaps we can urge the Military Department to discuss possible war plans. Greece is another culture power, and should be watched.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/Fanatika_culture_510AD.jpg

BTW, we have 2080 culture, and 22 culture "points". To figure out the approximate culture (yes, I know about Apollo, but I see that as more of a cheat now...), just plug in this simple formula:

22/2080 = #/X

Where, # is the culture number of the civ you want to estimate the total culture of. I.e., for Babylon, it's 111.

22/2080 = 111/X

Cross multiply:

22X = 230880
X = 10,494.54545454 (or 10,494.6)

Thanks, Cyc! :D

All the kudos really go to naervod and Plexus, and also of course to those others without an official position who toss in things to help out (e.g. Chieftess). These folks get my heartfelt praise for doing the things I haven't had time to do as the game gets more complex, and my RL gets more hectic.

Although, I would think Tokyo should be slightly higher, since we just captured it.

Plexus
Dec 18, 2002, 06:17 PM
Good point, I was factoring in that we might capture Nara next turn and all Japanese cities are pretty far away from Tokyo. But still, I agree that it should be changed.

Tokyo has been set to an Orange rating due to further assesment.

Plexus
Dec 18, 2002, 06:21 PM
@Gunning- You actually the city named after you to be warned? lol

Seriously though, Gunningheim has the neccessary culture to keep it from flipping, it may even cause Denver or Satsuma to flip to us. :D

An explanation why 'NFN' is 'NFN'- Well, I didn't want to confuse it with the National Footbal League... (NFL). So, I uh... used "N". :)

But then I guess you could confuse it with New Falcon's Nest... I'll work on it. :)

Octavian X
Dec 18, 2002, 09:54 PM
I did at first...

Also, I have set a library to be built after the defenses are built up in Leningrado. That city will be off your list in no time.

Dec 19, 2002, 11:40 PM
Most of the borders have enough culture in them to be at the blue rating for now.

Due to the building of improvements, killing off the Aztecs and taking some key Japanese cities, most cities have droped off my list.

Real life has been interfering greatly with my demogame play lately, to the point that I am not even up-to-date on what is happening within our lands! Were it not for the efforts of my Deputy and my Chat Rep, this office would be in a shambles. I even considered resigning, but with the elections upon us, that seems rather pointless.

I find I must apply myself to those aspects of the game that I can deal with in five-minute chunks while at work (with no Civ at hand, and only occasional maps/images allowed throught the #&*@! firewall) and the occasional chance I get to play/work at home.

Therefore, I will be declining any nominations I receive for this next term. I will still be around, joining in discussions, voting on polls, playing in the RPG. But I simply do not have the time to spare that any of our elected/appointed offices requires to be done well.

@Padma-I am sad to see you go. You have been an excellent culture leader and I enjoyed working for you. I am glad you will still be around the RPG and the forums and hopefully you can come back to culture the term after this.

@Chieftess- Yes, Kagoshima is within a province now, but it wasn't at the time we were discussing the issue.

Padma
Dec 26, 2002, 01:04 PM

Actually, I will be on the forums about as much as I am now, but, as I said, I don't think that's enough to do justice to any position (IMO).

Plexus
Dec 26, 2002, 02:57 PM
@Padma- I'm sorry to see you go. You have been a great culture minister and I hope you come back to this office some day. Will you still be involved in the RPG?

Padma
Dec 26, 2002, 09:37 PM
I'll most definitely stay involved, Sir Plexus. ;)

As I said above, I just don't have the time available that I think needs to be devoted to an elected position. I'll still be here, probably as much as I have been the last couple weeks. It's just, something had to give, and I was already losing my focus on the Culture Ministry, anyway.

I plan to remain the Prince of Lancre, and help our confederation grow, both in land and in strength! ;)
