View Full Version : Military Hardware quiz: Pre-20th century edition!
napoleon526 Dec 08, 2002, 06:46 PM I know that there's already a military hardware quiz, but I thought I'd make one for those of us who perhaps know more about less modern equipment.
We have 5 firearms, 2 swords, 1 helmet, and 1 polearm. Just give the country of origin, name, and year model number.

You got #7 right (Model 1865 Winchester rifle). I'll also accept #6, since it is a Colt .44 Army model revolver.
Sorry, you need to be a little more specific on the rest, Joe.
BTW, #1 is NOT a flintlock musket (big hint). #4 is NOT a cavalry saber (another big hint).
Ancient Grudge Dec 09, 2002, 01:59 AM 1- brown bess musket indian pattern
2- britsih light dragoon pistol
4- heavy calvary sword pattern 1796
5- two handed sword?
8- roman legionarie helmet
Pillager Dec 09, 2002, 06:15 AM 1: Yes, I would say Brown Bess, retired from service in 1848, IIRC. As for pattern and date, no idea. I'll guess at 1760?
Hurricane Dec 09, 2002, 08:19 AM Isn't #9 a halberd?
napoleon526 Dec 09, 2002, 11:56 AM AG has #8 right, and i'll give Hurricane credit for #9. It's actually a 15th century Swiss halberd (the type the Pope's Swiss guard carry), but halberds are difficult to distinguish between. AG is close on #2, but nationality is wrong. (big hint)
Let me repeat, #1 is NOT a flintlock musket, and #4 is NOT a cavalry saber.
Ancient Grudge Dec 09, 2002, 12:04 PM heavy cavalry sword is not a saber :) its a straight bladed heavy duty weapon which was used by the british heavy cavalry during napolenic wars. so in classificarion it is not a saber.
1-baker rifle
2- french light dragon pistol
napoleon526 Dec 09, 2002, 12:11 PM 1-baker rifle
2- french light dragon pistol
1- getting warmer...:D
2- I'll take this answer. It's a French Napoleonic Cavalry pistol.
1, 3, 4, and 5 are still up!
Ancient Grudge Dec 09, 2002, 12:43 PM 1- an early witworth or enfield rifle ?
3- a piemonte pistol
4- that so looks like a 1795 british heavy cavalry sword im so confused now :hmm: or a french heavy cavalry sword as the guard is a slimmer then the britsh model
napoleon526 Dec 09, 2002, 03:44 PM 1- an early witworth or enfield rifle ?
3- a piemonte pistol
Nope!
4- that so looks like a 1795 british heavy cavalry sword im so confused now or a french heavy cavalry sword as the guard is a slimmer then the britsh model
#4 (and #1) are American. On the sword, you can see the "US" on the guard. I probably should have found a different picture of it, since the blade is actually curved a little, but it's hard to tell in the current picture.
I should have picked a more distinctive looking weapon for #5, as I doubt anyone will be able to identify it.
Ancient Grudge Dec 09, 2002, 03:49 PM ohhhh yeah stupid me
i am determind to get 1
umm a jager rifle
napoleon526 Dec 09, 2002, 04:49 PM Nope, #1 is named after a US state (incredibly huge hint).
Globber Dec 09, 2002, 08:29 PM #1 is a pennsylania rifle, seems like a carbine model to me....
and #4 is a US calvalry officer's sword circa the Civil War.

Still wrong on #1. What's the only other state that has a rifle named after it?
I'll take your answer for #4. It's a model 1850 Staff and Field Officer sword. It was worn mostly by infantry, but you were close enough.
Ancient Grudge Dec 10, 2002, 02:37 AM a mississippi rifle
animepornstar Dec 10, 2002, 07:13 AM 1: kentucky rifle?
5: single-handed sword from the 12th or 13th century

I'll take these answers. #1 is indeed a Kentucky Long Rifle, the kind used by such folk icons as Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett.
#5 is a Norman sword, similar to those used by William the Conqueror's troops. I made this one way too vague. Next time i'll be sure to pick more unique looking weapons.
joespaniel Dec 10, 2002, 10:26 AM No, its was a good quiz.
Ancient Grudge Dec 10, 2002, 10:49 AM i agree it was suoperb quiz :D
animepornstar Dec 10, 2002, 11:43 AM i think he was refering to weapon number 5.
napoleon526 Dec 10, 2002, 12:38 PM If anyone is wondering, #3 is the pistol used by soldiers in Scottish Highland regiments during the early 18th century.
animepornstar Dec 10, 2002, 05:02 PM the scots using such decorated weapons... didn't know that about them. :D
who gets the next round?

You and Ancient Grudge both got some right, so either one of you can make one if you wish, or I can find some more pics.
