View Full Version : 4th Agent Orange PBEM game
anarres Dec 16, 2002, 10:22 AM Welcome to the fourth Agent Orange PBEM game.
You need to be able to spare about 1 hour per day in the evenings (CET). This is not fixed or enforced, but please don't sign up if you will frequently not be able to play on certain days. Occasional absence is expected, especially over the holidays.
I am playing with the idea of 'session times', where we will all be online for a couple of hours twice a week. These should result in 'power sessions' where we get maybe 3 or 4 turns done in a session. This may of course not work due to the limitations of email servers, but I hope it may be possible.
Two important concepts that you need to agree with to play:
No illeagal deals: all offline offers must be able to be backed up, even if it is an open offer. (So no 'I have Democracy - what do you want to swap it for' when you are only on Education).
No exploits. I shouldn't have to list them, so I won't. Any specific queries just ask.
Here is the game format:
Map: Standard
Water: 60% (to avoid too much land)
Landmass: Pangea (to avoid islands :))
Climate/Temperature/Age/Barbs: Random
Culturally Linked Starting Positions: Off
Accelerated Production: Off
All victory conditions enabled
The only requirement of entry is a willingness to play, some free time in the evenings (CET), and at least an average standard of gameplay.

THE GAME HAS STARTED
Melifluous Dec 16, 2002, 11:01 AM Hi Anarres,
Nice to see you getting in on the tournament staff.
I would like to join your PBEM game if I could.
I am also living in the UK, so it would be like the online PTW games we could never have...( I only have ADSL at work at the moment :D).
Anyway what do you want? Tribe names and stuff?
Email: stevebroad2002@hotmail.com
Civ: Cathaginians
Name: Melifluous
Country Name: Carthage
Noun: Carthaginians
Adj: Carthaginian
Title: Lord
Is this OK? I have PTW on my work and home PC's and am available from 8 pm most nights after work...
Look forward to hearing back from ya Anarres and have fun with the tournament...
Melifluous
anarres Dec 16, 2002, 12:03 PM Hi Melifluous, you are welcome :)
Your info looks good. Once some others have joined I will update the main post with everyones details.
I think I will play with an expansionist civ, but haven't decided yet. I like the idea of running around like a lunatic early on ;)
jshelr Dec 16, 2002, 12:30 PM Hi there
I'm available daily starting at 4pm Eastern Standard time in the US and would like to play if you have space and that would work. Thanks
Black Waltz Dec 16, 2002, 01:44 PM Bah. You had to take the Carthagians didn't you? :p (Bad spelling I know).
Anyway. I'll take the French, normal country name, Title will be Lord Aurilius the Wise.
Email - wooden_stake@hotmail.com
Live in the UK and I am online pretty much all day on weekends, from 6pm - 12 Midnight Weedays. Yes - I am sad. ;)
Haven't played a PBEM game before so you may have to explain the mechanics.
anarres Dec 16, 2002, 01:46 PM @jsheir: I really wanted to get some people who can play sometime between 7pm and 12pm CET (EST = CET - 7). This means we can organise sessions when we will all be online and available to play, and we can push the turns forward quickly.
If I can't get enough people who can play inthese times I will open it up to all timezones, can't you change your job to fit in with civ3? ;)

Read this for some basic PBEM questions and answers. It's fairly bare, but you can ask new questions too:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38903
Black Waltz Dec 16, 2002, 02:00 PM Well I love the Industrius/Comercial trait. And I was overjoyed when I saw I could chose that trait without being French when PTW came out. :p
Melifluous Dec 17, 2002, 01:35 AM Yeah I was also glad when the carthaginians came out...
No more frenchies for me... AND the Numidian Mercenary? What a unit *sigh*
Would just like to ask this though, with regards to the french... Why isn't the English UU the Longbowman? Agincourte anyone?
hehe
Melifluous
PS. Oh yeah serious question What Difficulty Level? Regent?
or are all PBEM games stuck on cheiftain?
Lt. 'Killer' M. Dec 17, 2002, 02:57 AM can I still join?

Can you PM me and tell me what you said to that mod? ;) I''m dying to know.
He swore an oath. He's not gonna tell. :p
:queen:
;)
Plux Dec 17, 2002, 04:15 AM Looks like a fun game to me, can I join too?? I'll be the Chinese..
Lt. 'Killer' M. Dec 17, 2002, 04:19 AM Oh, I'd like to be Germany this time round if still free, otherwise I'll take Babylon.
Melifluous Dec 17, 2002, 04:50 AM So how many people are we waiting for?
6? 8? 5... :D
When do we start, I wanna go go go ...
Ok so maybe PBEM games aren't exactly the adrenalin fueled ride I think they should be, but I wanna start :)

Hi Anarres ;)
I think I can live up to these standards :) I wanna join too
If possible, I wanna be the americans again. I still think industrious is the best trait and for a PBEM the expansionist trait keeps the game fun in the early years! I am available between 18:30 - 22:30 CET.
This will make #6 (or #7?). How long more will you wait?
anarres Dec 17, 2002, 05:55 AM Plux: added you to list.
When I get home tonight (7pm GMT) I will update the list in the first post with civ names. I will start the game tonight (hopefully), but it will not be until late as I have an online tournament meeting to attend first.
ERIKK may join, I will PM him to see if he's in or not.
Can people please give times over the next few weeks when they are not available, so we at least know in advance when the game will be suspended. I will not be able to play on the 31st December or the 1st Jan. It is unlikely that I will play on the 24th and 25th (and maybe 26th) December.
Also, could I have comments on the 'power sessions' idea. This is where we can all agree to be online at certain times (hopefully using MSMessenger to communicate), thus enabling us to do several turns in one go.
This week I am free Wed/Thurs/Fri evening, and can arrange my weekend around when is convenient for others. I can usually start from about 7.30PM GMT on weekday evenings if I am available, occasionally earlier.

No need to, I just signed up!
the 'power sessions' idea
This friday would be great, also tonight is a possibility too. We will be online anyway ;) Next to that I cannot look to much forward. I guess we will have to decide week by week. This sunday I will probably not be available until late in the evening.
holiday
Furthermore, during the holidays I am avaiable (very) late in the evening (but not on dec 31 ;) ). But I am sure there will not be much progress these days anyway
Lt. 'Killer' M. Dec 17, 2002, 05:57 AM I' probably gone Dec 24-26 (27?) and 31.
other times look OK.
essexloony2 Dec 17, 2002, 05:57 AM MeMeMeMeMeMeeee
I would love to play Anarres if there is still room.
I would like the English if they are available please matey, name is Lord Loon :scan:
Melifluous Dec 17, 2002, 06:02 AM OK well,
When I said when do we start, I didn't think you would say tonight...
Anyway I can't get to a PC tonight, but could do something up til about 6pm GMT, here from work, or first thing tomorrow at 9 ish, also from work... (I love being a comp programmer :D)
I am free Wednesday and Friday this week
And probably also can't play 24,25,26 this year as I am in Norfolk... (Yeah I know, sounds like fun huh?)
Apart from that I am well looking forward to playing this damn thang and the power session sound cool, but maybe once during weekdays and once at the weekend if we could all manage it?
Anyways, see y'all soon
Melifluous
anarres Dec 17, 2002, 07:53 AM @ERIKK, you're in the list. I must have been writing my post when you did yours :p
@essexlooney: I have added you in, but you need to post a few comments about your availability for power sessions and holidays.
English. Have fun with the Man-O-War (almost as useless as the USA UU), but I applaud your loyality. :D
Since Melifluous is not around tonight, and ERIKK is not around tomorrow, can we try for Friday to be our first power session? How about 7 - 11PM CET (6 - 10PM GMT)? Remember that this will only work if we are all online together.
I don't think we will manage to get these going more than once or twice a week, but it helps when normally each turn takes several days
P.S. I've changed the thread title: 4th Agent Orange PBEM game: The power sessions

Yeah, friday-times are OK to me. But when did I say something about tomorrow  Sunday will be difficult for me!
Melifluous Dec 17, 2002, 08:07 AM Hi all
Sorry to be such a pain in the a$$ about tonight, but Christmas obligation are coming to the fore and I needs must attend. Sure you all understand.
And
Friday night and indeed any weekday night, I rarely make it home before 8pm (GMT). Although I can still be at work for 6-7pm (GMT) if it would help to start there?
I work in London, and travel back to Portsmouth each day by train. Anarres, you know how far that is. Anyone else check a map web site ;)
This means that if I stay at work til 7, I wont make it back online til about 9, 9-30 ish...
If I donnt stay at work I can be online for about 8pm (GMT)...
Anyway I'm easy either way
Weekends?
No Problem, can be on all day ish if you like...

the 'power sessions' idea
This friday would be great, also tonight is a possibility too.
Maybe I misunderstood, I thought that because you only mentioned today and friday, that tomorrow you were not available...
Anyway, can we resolve when we are all available (i'm switching all times to CET only, to avoid confusion):
Melifluous: either up to 8pm (CET) @ work, then 10-10:30pm @ home, OR from 9pm @ home.
ERIKK: 6:30 to 10:30pm (according to first post), but said 11pm 'ok' in later post.
We can start as soon as Melifluous gets home on weekdays. We should start without him, and leave the game in his email for when he gets home. This will give us from 9pm to about 11pm CET.
The other option is to start at 7pm CET (earliest I can play), and we can just stop when Melifluous goes home from work at 8pm. If we can convince ERIKK to stay awake, we can carry on at 10 - 10:30pm when Melifluous gets in.
Maybe we can convince Melifluous to get in to work a bit earlier and so leave a bit earlier as well (or have you got a crappy programmer job where you don't set your own hours like mine :p)
I know this is a hassle, and we haven't started the game yet , but I think it is worth it if we can get even one or two if these sessions a week.
ERIKK Dec 17, 2002, 09:03 AM Sure, but 23:00 CET is the latest for me, and not always please. Also, lets first wait what others have to say about this. There are more people that have to travel I guess...
Melifluous Dec 17, 2002, 09:33 AM Crappy programming job? Me?
Yeah actually you're right. I am a COBOL programmer and I'm proud...
hehe
Anyways that all looks OK, I can't leave any earlier.
But can sometimes, OK most of the time play at anytimeduring the working day for like 5-10 mins here and there. So I might get a turn or two out whilst at work...
Your job allow you to do that?
Later

Plux Dec 17, 2002, 10:18 AM In the next days I definitely won't be playing sessions:
- tonight (LOTR-marathon @ cinema :) )
- 25 & 27 dec (ho ho ho)
- 31
... and probably some evenings in between that I will be socially engaged, but I don't know when yet. Enough time to plan a session or two though.
From the first week of january I'll even be quitting my part-time job to free up time for studies (not civ ;) ) so I'll have some more opportunities. For the playlist it doesn't really matter what turn I take, so you can fill me in anywhere..
essexloony2 Dec 17, 2002, 10:43 AM I am available at the stated times, although Christmas tis the season to be dizzy.
I live in the UK, so almost any night at those times is good.
Also, Melifluous, you will be getting attacked first, as us East Londoners want Harry Redknapp back :)

Plux Dec 17, 2002, 12:36 PM no problemo for me.. just need to know in time when exactly..
Black Waltz Dec 17, 2002, 04:12 PM Well I will be available any time over the holidays except maybe Tuesday afternoon. That's the extent of my Christmas celebrations. New Years? I'll usher in the New Year on my PC. :p
Lt. 'Killer' M. Dec 17, 2002, 04:17 PM Sorry, won't be able to play in the evenings the next few days - sick pets at home need a lot of care atm.
You can leave me the game in mail and I will paly during daytime if you do 1 turn per day. Otherwise, I better step out :(
anarres Dec 17, 2002, 04:20 PM Lt Killer -
hope it is nothing serious.
any idea how long for?
Lt. 'Killer' M. Dec 17, 2002, 04:24 PM for the entire week, I'm afraid, and it is serious. :( but they should all survive the treatment, the question is if it catches on.
anarres Dec 17, 2002, 04:27 PM Well, I wish them all the best. I get very upset when my cats get injured or ill in any way.
I am happy to postpose the 'power sessions' as long as needed.
Black Waltz Dec 17, 2002, 04:29 PM So when will we start this? No point in waiting for Power Sessions now. We may aswell get a few turns over with just so us people with no lives don't get bored. ;)
ERIKK Dec 17, 2002, 04:30 PM Game to Melifluous!
anarres Dec 17, 2002, 04:33 PM The game has started :)
Mecca is now the heart of the new world :D

anarres Dec 17, 2002, 05:06 PM I have updated the first post with email addresses.
@Plux and essexlooney2:
Can both of you please pm or post your emails.
@Killer:

Edit: When setting the players I selected male for all of you. If any of you are female, you're gonna have some re-adjustment to do ;)

I put ERIKK second because we were chatting and he wanted a turn before be had to go offline tonight :). Other than that in order of posts (I think)

anarres Dec 18, 2002, 11:16 AM I have pm'd Plux in the hope of getting in touch. Thinking about it, I will also email him.
No posts from Plux on cfc since his post in this thread...
Edit: Update - Plux has disabled email access from cfc :(
@Killer: might as well post the save on here once you have taken your go. At least that way Plux will get it as soon as he checks this thread.

Plux Dec 19, 2002, 04:34 AM BTW: Yesterday I played a MP-game on Direct IP. One time the game crashed and we had to reload and it turned out that before reloading you can redefine the play style. In that case from Simultaneous MP to PBEM, but it would be cool if it also went the other way around. In stead of PBEM power sessions, we could have MP power sessions!
anarres Dec 19, 2002, 05:29 AM @Plux: Definately food for thought :), I may do some testing over the weekend...
Black Waltz Dec 19, 2002, 07:52 AM Not a chance. Why do you think I play PBEM? Live in a rural area of Scotland with a Dial Up Modem. Not exactly the best for online gaming.
anarres Dec 19, 2002, 08:36 AM ok, good point. was only a possibility anyways...

Black Waltz Dec 23, 2002, 12:59 PM Passed on to Killer.
Plux Dec 24, 2002, 11:56 AM Bad news! Today my hard drive crashed completely, so I won't be able to play untill a new drive arrives. If all goes well, that will be this friday, so I won't be able to play my turns before the weekend, but hopefully we can continue from then. Luckily it's X-mas so most of you will be busy anyways, but I do feel a little bit amputated without my civ3
Happy Holidays to y'all
Plux Dec 29, 2002, 06:24 AM Back again with a new 80GB drive, so lots of space for PBEM-saves
Games is with essex now
essexloony2 Dec 29, 2002, 04:26 PM Guys,
I am away until Wednesday
Plux Jan 02, 2003, 06:15 AM So the game has found it's way to the next player now?
Melifluous Jan 02, 2003, 06:25 AM As far as I am aware, Essex hasn't passed this onto anarres yet...
I was talking to anarres last night and he didn't mention it...
Just a thought but maybe we could send an email to all involved whenever we pass a turn on...
Melifluous
anarres Jan 02, 2003, 08:03 AM I've just got it.
Edit: And now passed on to ERIKK

Melifluous I agree since I apparantly may have forgotten to send turn 5 on.
I have now made an email template and put it with my saves. I will email everyone when I pass it on to ERIKK.
Melifluous Jan 06, 2003, 03:08 PM Hey anarres...
I think you HAD passed this one on...
Still thanks for trying to post again, nice to see some people ensuring that this game lives...
Have sent the game I got from ERIKK on to BlackWaltz again and also to ERIKK for some reason that I am yet to fathom...
Sorry for the odd style everyone ... In an odd mood...

Lt. 'Killer' M. Jan 07, 2003, 04:22 AM ah, meli, railroad companies -whaddaya expect?
In Germany, they have a new system now where you can get a 40% reduction in price if u book early. problem: only 10% of seats can be booked early - ****ers.
anarres Jan 07, 2003, 04:42 AM Mel - you are a brave man commuting so far every day. I couldn't do it, I would go crazy.
You were definately right about the email thing. We should all email each other every turn (but please do not email the save to everyone people!).
hehe, back to my normal avatar :D
Plux Jan 13, 2003, 05:41 PM I guess the game is still with Black Waltz? Anybody hear from him?
anarres Jan 13, 2003, 05:52 PM Grr. My game is dying!!!
So much for power sessions
If anyone want to see how power sessions can work then check the last 3 links in my sig...
Edit: Last post by Black Waltz: 23rd Dec :(
anarres Jan 17, 2003, 11:19 AM Has this game dissapeared somewhere?
Please post if you have it, or have seen it since the 14th. Better still, Mel: have you passed on to Black Waltz? Killer: have you recieved the game from Black Waltz?
Black Waltz, are you still alive?
Please cc me in to the email when you pass this game on
Lt. 'Killer' M. Jan 17, 2003, 11:22 AM I haven't gotten it since a long time ago....
essexloony2 Jan 17, 2003, 12:33 PM Its a shame if this one went missing, it was looking like being a fun game.
Seems like forever since I saw a save for this
Lt. 'Killer' M. Jan 17, 2003, 12:39 PM BlackWaltz is just before me and seemingly gone :(
meli: time to mail him and if he doesn't hsow, kick him out :(
Melifluous Jan 17, 2003, 02:47 PM Wierd I talk to this guy...

Will ask him next time I see him...
Melifluous
Lt. 'Killer' M. Jan 17, 2003, 03:18 PM I re-checked: the gmae didn't arrive here
Lt. 'Killer' M. Jan 19, 2003, 04:46 AM anarres: I suggest you give BlackWaltz a kick to see if he's still alive!
Plux Jan 19, 2003, 05:08 AM IIRC I last week I already sent a mail to him, cc-ed to you all. I guess we should accept this game is dead, and I don't believe you can kick some1 out of a PBEM??
Lt. 'Killer' M. Jan 19, 2003, 05:42 AM Plux: that's what the extra password is for that the game admin has to enter ;)
Plux Jan 19, 2003, 05:49 AM Aha :)
Then kick him! :spank:
nothing personal BW ;)
anarres Jan 19, 2003, 07:18 AM Who knows how to kick someone from a game?
Plux, email me the save in case I need it. I don't know if you kick them from the start of the turn or the latest save you have.
I also think we may have to get another player, so
OPEN SLOT FOR AGENT ORANGE PBEM 4
col Jan 19, 2003, 07:28 AM I'll play it if you need another player
anarres Jan 19, 2003, 07:35 AM You're in col, welcome aboard
Plux Jan 19, 2003, 07:46 AM Melifluous was the last one to have the save before BW, so he should mail you the latest version.
And welcome, col, glad to have you in :goodjob:
ERIKK Jan 19, 2003, 07:48 AM When Mel gets back this game will be running again!~Great I believe I have a good starting location in this game!

Melifluous Jan 19, 2003, 08:43 AM OK guys...

Melifluous
essexloony2 Jan 19, 2003, 10:55 AM Glad this game is being revived.
Nice one Col :)
Lt. 'Killer' M. Jan 20, 2003, 04:30 AM if BlackWaltz can be bothered to post his password here Col could get going with anarres trying to get the password changed........
Melifluous Jan 20, 2003, 04:46 AM Problem solved ...
I have erm.. obtained the password for the account and passed this and the save onto Col...
Melifluous
anarres Jan 20, 2003, 06:06 AM Mel, what was the score with Black Waltz? Did you manage to get in touch or have you found a way to hack the save?
Melifluous Jan 20, 2003, 06:10 AM Erm hack is too strong a word...
I can access the passwords if the need arises...
I only do this if they are needed..
Melifluous
Lt. 'Killer' M. Jan 20, 2003, 06:11 AM * adds mel to the blaaaaaaaack list of bad hackers *
now why oh why did i trust you... :)
j/k, meli!
anarres Jan 20, 2003, 06:20 AM Hmm. Maybe I will regret telling Mel to play with HEX editors :undecide:
Melifluous Jan 20, 2003, 06:23 AM Would just like to add more to this topic...
I have recently found need to find the admin password of a game I started as I erm, forgot what the damn thing was...
I searched the Forums and hidden in there is a way of looking at the data on a PTW save file...
I used this information to get to the admin password for the game. Now in PBEM4 col needs blackwaltz' password...
What should happen?
Should anarres give col the admin password?
Should anarres use the admin password to change the password for Blackwaltz and therefor see Cols position...
I thought the best answer would be to use my new found skills to get the password for Col...
So I did...
I am an honourable player who feels that hacking or cheating at a PBEM kinda kills the point of playing against other people in the first place...
I wanna play not just to win, but to see how others react to situations and how good I am compared to them.
If I must cheat to win, then surely it is my programming skills that are proved not my game skills.
I dont cheat, it aint fun...

Melifluous Jan 20, 2003, 06:29 AM I know you know I dont cheat...
Just wanted to clarify things a bit for people that dont know me so well...
Anyways if anyone needs my services to retreive a password, then they are on offer ;)
Keep on Trucking...

col Jan 20, 2003, 08:09 AM Do you think you could just adjust the amount of gold I've got too?? Maybe add a few cities and a couple more techs.
Maybe not. ;)
Just send me the damned save and password and I'll do the rest for myself in the game. France. Yuck.
Hehe - just got Black's password
