Your first PBEM and immediately go for OCC! I will follow this one closely from the thread! Good luck to you all, I think it will be a hard one!

Well the way I see it is that if I get taken out early then at least I can watch some of the big boys play. Besides OCC for everyone might be fun - if a bit cutthroat. I can see a few different possible strategies here. There wont be any slow lingering deaths in this kind of game.

Maybe I'll get a nice fertile island all to myself

Put me down as a random civ - then the others wont know what to expect either!

Stupid question (but I better check anyway):

Doe everyone know the definition of an OCC game? I ask because in the tounament someone submitted an OCC game that was a 20K culture victory (One City Culture).

OCC stands for One City Challenge. This means that you can only ever have 1 city. If you take another city you have to raise it. (Variant Rule: You may capture a city, but you must get rid of it in the same turn. This is pointless here anyway, since no-one else could buy it from you ;) )

Or are we playing the 20K culture win? :crazyeye:

Dont worry Anarres. In the unlikely event that I capture your city, I promise to raze it straight away.

I have a totally theoretical strategy for OCC, that I shall be testing during this game....

Lt. 'Killer' M.
Dec 23, 2002, 03:38 AM
request: could everyone please state 'OCC' when sending me a save / battle report? I almost mis-moved (planning several cities) until I realized which game this is!

let's see: a cow a wheat a hut a river....... :mwaha:

Djurre
Dec 23, 2002, 06:25 AM
I have 2 questions about the OCC rules. Is it allowed to abandon your own capital (I don't even know if that is possible :) ) when you captured another city? And may you create a settler on a galley so when your capital is destroyed you can build it somewhere else?

In both causes you will still have only 1 city all the time.

essexloony2
Dec 23, 2002, 06:32 AM
Unless you have seriously flawed tactics, or fall way behind in Tech, your city being destroyed is very unlikely.

However, I believe that if you lose your city, you are out.

Djurre
Dec 23, 2002, 06:56 AM
I the last GOTM I built a settler and put it on a galley just before the Persians took my last city Babylon (I saw the AI do that in one of my previous games). I wasn't destroyed, I could still sail my galley (until I suicided it to find new land). So in an OCC game (without elimination) you could build a galley with a settler on it as an extra saveguard. I agree with you ,essexlooney , that when your capital is destroyed you'll be defeated later anyway, because you'll will be too far behind.

But now for example suppose you are a very suicidal warmonger and your opponent is also and you both have a settler on a galley ( I know, a lot of assumptions :) ). You and your opponent are both at the gates of eachothers capital with a huge military force but have both neglected the defense of your city ( remember, you are suicidal :) ). Then if you are the first one to take the capital you could abandon your own capital and keep the opponents capital. Now your opponent won't have a big city anymore and has to use his settler to rebuild one.

It is a strange example, but i just wanted to know if building a settler on a galley is allowed in the OCC game.

anarres
Dec 23, 2002, 07:40 AM
IMO, losing your capital should result in instant death. It just seems right :D

Djurre
Dec 23, 2002, 09:53 AM
Yes, I agree. I think your game should be over when you lost your capital. That way players could not conquer a city with a wonder in it and then disband their own capital to keep the wonder.

Melifluous
Dec 23, 2002, 09:56 AM
OK,

Just to clarify then...

OCC means One CITY challenge, you build no others...

Settlers must not be built ever! Only for use as prebuilds...

Settler gained from huts MUST BE DISBANDED

Cities gained from huts and/or conquest must immediatley RAZED!

Anyone breaking from these rules will instantly lose...

Melifluous

PS. heh, that sounded tough didn't it ;)

Could everybody in the game send an email to everyone else in the game when they finish a turn, just to let everyone know where the game is at...

Then we can flame or badger as we see fit ;)

Lol

I know you told me to ignore what you posted here Mel, but.....

I had the OCC game for about 36 hours. I apologise for that, and know that I should be moving my turns along a little faster, but internet connections are not so easily available in other countries. That is why I play by Email.

I recieved, played, and sent on that turn from a small town in the Punjab. I am now back in the UK, and still find it hard to believe that I even managed to get electricity, which required one of the local engineers to rig me up a transformer for my laptop.

I strongly object to the claim that I am 'crap' because I could not play my turn for a day and a half. I am sorry if my life does not revolve around playing Civ, I thought this was a game.

I am afraid that faced with the choice of helping a small community in a very poor country build a local railway to get their economy kick-started, and playing Civ3, the choice is not that hard to make.

If you want to leave Erik in, thats fine by me.

essexloony: for the future, it would be a smart idea to tell people BEFOREHAND when you go on 'civ-risky' trips. Then, we don't worry, we don't stay up late at night waiting for hte mail ;)

anarres
Jan 16, 2003, 10:17 AM
essexloony2:

FWIW there are 4 full days between me sending it to you and you posting here, not 36 hours.

If 8 players took 4 days per move it would take over a month per turn. So, in a year we would take only 12 moves. 200 is more like the realistic minimum to play a game with 8 players.

I am not saying this to criticise you, but to point out the logistics of a game like this. If there will be an occasional absence then everyone will be fine with it, but with no prior notice it appeared as though you had decided not to play anymore.

I really want you to stay in the game, but it is important you know why people got frustrated, not just that they did get frustrated.

Lets play :scan:

I will not quit, but only because I am going to win.....;p

Also Anarres, I didnt play the turn at the same time as I posted. I had no internet access out there, only a phone line which allowed me to get Outlook to work.

I really should set up Internet on my laptop, but then who goes to a country as beautiful as India and wastes time browsing the internet...

For the record, I am in 3 games and intend to service them all far better in future. Sorry I held things up.

I'm sorry but your logic is kinda well, stupid. I just email it to the person next in line, and hope that they dont take off for almost a week without telling anyone (sorry essex). Some people who do that, i can understand (Sage broke his leg) but now your just getting paranoid that its going to happen again.

Want to know what i do when i get a PBEM game?
1) Scan it
2) Download it
3) Play it
4) Send to next in line
5) Post in that thread if anything interesting has happened.

Right now, one of my PBEM games is going relatively quickly without anyone posting on this site for awhile.

Widfire: I don't get what your problem is, right when you send that mail to col, simpyl 'cc' it to mel. Takes about 172 second and it is HIS mailbox hat gets full. It is enough if TWO people realize that something is amiss, if one is away (say col isn't here) meli can check; if meli isn't here col can still pass it on. I guess this one is on the same hold track as all others with mixed patch participants :(

It is moving, but I think at about 1 turn a week, maybe a little less.

The weird thing is that my last 3 saves have been in and out of my inbox inside 4 hours.

Where exacly is the hold up on this game? I absolutely refuse to play a single more turn unless the game I sent out 3 or 4 days ago reaches me in the next 48 hours. Every time I get the save it's like, 'yeah, I remember this game now!'.

I had planned to sit here for a while resting after climbing that mountain, but if you insist ...

well - would you believe it, I call into a nearby city for a little light refreshment and I'm attacked by thugs. I defend myself and the city collapses around me. Well I never. Never underestimate a veteran. ;)

It was much safer up on that mountain.

Oh well. One less PBEM for me (thats still on 1.14).

But still, we had agreed to be allies. That worked :p

Making a warrior next turn too :( Too bad I had to move my start or I would of already had that warrior. I remember a little while back you said to get out of your territory, and since I was thinking we were allies, i did.

Warmonger.... ;)

No, I wasnt a square away, I was two but still inside his borders. So I just explored around. Sadly.

I rushed a spearman because you were so close! I thought you'd do the same.

Yeah sad but true...

I do hereby declare this game dead...

Great Idea, but as likely as most other large PBEM games as likely to survive as a chocolate fireguard...

Never mind...

Nobody won, but at least we all know who lost ;)

reminds me of another classic footie quote...

If the ball would have been the other side of the post it would have been a goal!
