View Full Version : Can the AI handle uber units?

I want to mod my Civ3, just because I can, but I want to at least pretend that it adds something to the game other than flavor or extra detail, so I'm considering "Uber-units." One from each era, with the best A/D/M from every other unit in that era, but *very* expensive.

For example, the Ancient Era unit would be 3/2/2 [4/1/1]. Instead of building two spearmen, a Horseman, and a Catapult in your cities (if that were your SOP for defensive practices), you could build two Uber Units and get somewhat the same effect for half the Maintenance cost, or four Uber Units for a vastly improved effect at the same Maintenance cost.

During war time, however, you could produce a Spearman, a Horseman, *and* a Catapult in the time it would take to produce one Uber Unit, move them as a stack, and have a lot of other advantages.

Will the AI recognize this, or will it a) ignore the uber units in favor of specialized units, even when it's being crippled by its massive military outlay every turn, or b) concenctrate on uber units to the loss of specialized units, and get swamped by stacks of "component" units made by a player?

I tried to look in the forums for stuff about the AI, but "AI" is shorter than the minimum search turn length of 4 characters, so links to other threads are just as appreciated as actual responses.

i think the AI will begin only to build these uber units as they are the best.
