View Full Version : what's the best version of Civ 2

ATM I have the original Civ 2 but I am tired of the bugs (particularly, the one where a cruise missle attacks a square with an AEGIS and a battleship and Civ 2 decides to use my battleship as the defensive unit and gets both killed).

Out of all the versions (ie: Civ 2 gold and TOT, etc), I'm just wondering which I should get, do they even fix bugs?

I brought Civ CTP during a trip to Malaysia for $4 but I stopped playing it the second I saw the animated units, and how slow they made the game (what everyone said about it influenced me too).

Oh, forgot to ask, ARE there any patches for the orginal version of Civ 2?

If your gonna get a civII game, do NOT get TOT. First of all, it doesn't even have a scenario editor. Second of all, it only has a couple of movies. Third of all, the graphics may be better, but they're way too dark. You can't even see if there is a road on that grassland or not. And last of all, the music STINKS!!!!!! See the music thread.

For single player civ2 calssic with patches (2.42 version??) if you like senarios add Fantastic Worlds, etc.

for multiplayer civ2 MGE with 1.3 patch. This one comes with FW and Best of the Net senarios, but the AI is better suited to multiplayer, it is much more hostile to human players.

I thought the patches were available for download at this site, Check the main page and to get to downloads. If not here try Apolyton (its link is in the link section here).

There is a link to Microprose Support Site in "About the Game" section of Civ2, and I just added links to all patches in the <a href="http://www.civfanatics.com/civ2downloads.shtml">Civ2 Downloads Collection</a>. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yer I know, I found a link to the microprose site in the "how to multiplay" section of this site.

My point is tho, if you follow the official links (civ2.com civilization2.com), you are offered no support except for an ad to buy the game, and I think that just about sums up hasbro's attitude to games and those who play them.

Anyway, that microprose site is real slow, you can get the patches much faster from cdrom.com, here's a link:

Civilization II update 2.42:
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/games_patches/pc-patches/general-patches/civ242.zip

The microprose page is here: http://support.microprose.com/civii.htm

Wow, www.civii.com (http://www.civii.com) is down. Been a long time since I had to Download the patch. You can also get alot of patches from www.zone.com, (http://www.zone.com,) if they support the game, and they support Civ2 Gold MPE. Oh, never mind, I just checked it out, and unless the civii.com site is just down for maintenance the patch isn't avail that way either.
My vote goes to Civilization 2 Gold Multiplayer Edition. I have that and Civilization 2, the Fantasy add-on pack, Civilization:Call to Power, and Call to Power 2.

My version is real weird!

on the 'game options' (ctrl+O) screen it says that I have version 5.2.5f (?), in the game credits section it says that it is the gold multiplayer, the box it came in says it is the 'Ultimate Collection' and the Fascist patch seems to think that it is the 'classic'version.
<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/snipersmilie.gif" border=0>

WELL?!! Does anyone know what it is?

Oh and it's 20 to eleven here!!!

I saw your version on the self a few weeks ago, but I am mot foamier with it. It appear from the box to be a possible altered version of MGE package with two other out of date games, IIRC, Worms & Mech Warrior. I do not think it has been out long enough for any of the civ fans to have evaluated its eccentricities, assuming there is any difference between it and the other civ2MGE. Perhaps you might see if it take the 1.3 patch for MGE.

If you make scenarios, Fantastic Worlds is the best version. MGE and ToT introduced NEW bugs with the objective scoring system, and made the AI so aggressive that computer players are much more likely to attack you.
FW will be hard to find if you don't have it already.

If your interest is multiplay, get MGE instead of ToT.

The best version is definetly MGE for it's very easy to edit(my specialty)and it is patched up more than any civ2 game(besides TOT)so it has few bugs and also it can play both FW and MGE scenarios where FW only play FW scenarios and finally it's cheaper than youd think for instance at the stores i go to you see the origanal civ2 for $9.99 and the expansions for $4.99 each when MGE is just $7.89 http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/Instagib.gif

damn, how'd you get civ mge for so cheap? it costed me 40$ canadian.

Penvzila: i've downloaded the Civ2 MGE from a warez site too, and it's only 20 megs. Then i decided to buy it because i wanted all the extras, like the music, the movies, the poster with the tech tree, instruction manuel, etc.

Well since eToys is no longer selling Civ2 MGE or ToT I figured I post another cheap link. This is only ToT but still a decent price of $11.99, I may have to pick one up in the near future http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.ebworld.com/ebx/categories/products/product.asp?pf_id=167000&mscssid=K98L31PU40VJ9P5E4MPHGLSQ1AB04FN2&ref=1

Civ II is the best most practical version. Civ II TOT is for people with faster computers. Civ Call to Power is a poor excuse for a copycat company "Activision" and they SUCK EGGS! Because I have a bug ridden game that they have addmitted on Apolyton that they have no interest or desire to fix and basically told the gamers to put up with it, and I am never buying another activistion product. Pitty because I have been helping to support Activision since space Invaders, Berzerk, Spiderman, Adventure, Enduro, Missile Command and Asteroids!!!

ACTIVISION KISS MY REAR END!!!! For slapping me and thousands of other people in the face! <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/tongue.gif" border=0> <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/tongue.gif" border=0> <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/tongue.gif" border=0> <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/tongue.gif" border=0>!!!

Sorry, I got carried away....

*Takes a pill*...

Oh yeah, civ II is the best release of anything with the name Civ in the title <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

And Civ III will be even better <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

MGE, period. It's a big a a$$ package that contains everything ever release officially for Civ2, at a "low" price. Almost every person who's serious about multiplay owns it.
