My husband and I just got Civ 3 for Christmas and are loving it. However, we'd really like to be able to play together, either hotseat, or (ideally) over our home lan. Does anyone know what we'd need to purchase to do this? I'm not sure I'm willing to buy a second copy of the game plus two copies of the expansion.
If we want to play a lan game, will we both need the expansion cd in the drive to play? If that's true, would purchasing two expansion cds without a second Civ 3 cd work?
Failing all this, with one copy of the expansion, is there a hotseat mode?

My guess is that you could install Civ with only the one copy of the game, but would need 2 copies of PTW to play MP. I haven't tried this myself though...

Bridget.
I hope I can help here. Myself and my wife are playing PTW over our little home LAN. I can tell you this, ANY little cracks in the relationship will soon come to be big chasms when your partner relentlessly batters your cities. I know, I've been there! :D
Moving on, we have 2 copies of both Civ3 and PTW. You actually need only the 1 copy of C3, but 2 of PTW as it's PTW that is in the drive when you play MP. (as Eddie says above)
If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to (try to) help!

I have a question about getting civ3 to work on the lan. I have 2 computers one is a win98 machine when I first installed civ3 and ptw on this computer it could not see any lan games and when I pushed host it would crash PTW. We finally got this computer working but I can't remember what we did, if we did anything. It seems like it just started working.
My other computer is windowsXP and this one will start a game just fine. We can play for about 2 - 10 minutes and then the winXP computer crashes. It has the same error message every time. Does anyone know what is causing it to crash. It is a brand new install of xp with all the updates and direct X 9.
This winXP computer has a dual boot with win 98 on the other side. It is having the same problem that the original win98 machine was having. Where it can't see any lan games and when I try to host it crashes.
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
I can only relate my experiences with Windows XP. Both machines on my network are running it.
play for about 2 - 10 minutes and then the winXP computer crashes. It has the same error message every time.
What is the error message? (DX9 is working well for me, so we can probably discount that)
Is the network working properly? Can both machines share each others files across it?
What version of Civ3/PTW are you running?
Does PTW run on either machine any better in single player mode?

My wife and I have been playing CIV III and PTW with only 1 cd..
no problems... we have not upgraded PTW to 1.14 but at original 1.01 version 1 cd is enough...
Just start/host game in multi player at #1 comp. then take out.. insert cd... go to multi player in 2nd comp... join game... then launch (with cd still in #2 comp) from #1 comp.
We have been able to play for hours and save games for later completion...
Hope this helps.. Bradius
In Everything Give Thanks...

I don't want to start a legal argument, but I'm sure this is going to contravene the software license...

Well I would strongly recommend you patch the games to 1.14f as this has fixed many MP bugs and made the game mostly playable on the internet and can only help your LAN games.
