I cannot find ResEdit anywhere on my hard drive; classic or OS X. Is this the same as text edit? I suppose now I'm showing how little I truly know. Is this a standard application that is packaged w/ macs?

It isn't included with the computer. Possibly because Apple thought people might begin exploring all the different little things they can fiddle around with, and mess something up (ehm. happened to me... had to reinstall the system... but thats another story.)

Anyway, I believe a link was provided to a download site in the other topic. I downloaded a copy from there.

EDIT: Yep, here it is. Download it here. (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/dl-redirect.pl/ResEdit213.sit.hqx?path=ev/utilities&file=ResEdit213.sit.hqx)

Got it, thanks! If one of you guys have successfully fixed a "corrupted" save game, and with it being as hairy as they say, could you post a step-by-step guide?

It's really not that hard.... as long as you don't go messing around with your system folder... for example...

Anyway, just follow the instructions posted by Beamup in the other post. If you need clarification on anything, just ask about specificly what. Just remember, everything is case sensitive...

As for step by step instructions, all righty.

1. First, launch ResEdit (no-brainer)
2. Go to the file menu, and go down to 'Get File/Folder info...'
3. Locate and open the save file.
4. In the 'Type' field, enter 'GAMs' (case sensitive!) (without quotes, of course.)
5. In the 'Creater' field, enter 'Civ3' (same as above, case sensitive, no quotes)
6. Go to the file menu, and go down to Save
7. Go to the file menu, and go down to Quit.

Sorry, keyboard died before I could finish up. Anyway, if you get the lil save icon that we are all hopefully familiar with ( the lil map ), then you know you were successful.

There is a much simpler way:

for MacOS 9.x:
use the "More File Info CMM Plug-in" by Hide Itoh to set type and creator in one easy step

for MacOS X:
ctrl-click on the fiile and set "open with..." to Civilization III

This worked for me all the times. :goodjob:

PS: If you are interested in the how and why, read "Type and Creator Codes" in Chapter 4 of David Pogue's "MacOS X - The Missing Manual".

So is there an OS X version of ResEdit?

I've been wondering about that myself, but I doubt it. I believe that OS X basicly stopped using resource forks, therefore eliminating the need for ResEdit. but you can still easily open ResEdit up in classic if you need to.
