hi maharlika
i would recomend you install the newest mac patch v1.21g which you can find here: http://www.civfanatics.net/files/civ3/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=34
(next time just check the main page :D )
btw, civ is a slow game. it's verry relaxing after you had some heartattacks because of realtimegames (AoE...).

First, welcome! :) Yes, you need a patch (1.21g). It can be found through a link at www.civfanatics.com (left hand column uunder Civ3 patches). Also, you can get the patch at ftp://ftp.infogrames.net/ (scroll down for it).
Best advice - understand how the AI operates, too much to list here. But, you can learn a lot in the strategy forum. Also, micromanage your cities. This is something I'm really beginning to get excited about, thanks to an SG game w/ tao & Txurce.
Under OSX, make sure you have "quartz rendering" turned off. When you start up the game, hold the apple key down. A menu will pop up for you to make this change (see the thread about OSX being slow).
