View Full Version : PAD1 - PTW Random 'Admin Thread'

This is the game we talked about at the end of ct3 - Chieftain Training Day (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29044).

What I would like is to play a random Civ, on a Standard (Medium) Map, against 7 random AI opponents. Barbs will be set to either Roaming or Restless, depending on desires of the players. World type will be Random, as will World Age.

Level will be Warlord or Regent. Since I am tailoring this somewhat for the old ct3 crew, I am thinking Warlord, but with Restless Barbs.

Other rules/modifications: I want this to be done according to "Honorable" rules. For any unfamiliar with them, that means we keep our reputation as spotless as we can. No exploits allowed. I would also include no buying of AI workers until we have an embassy with the subject Civ, as the early crippling of the AI by buying its workers, while more costly in PTW, still feels like an exploit. If you have a question whether something is an exploit, ASK before you do it!

This will NOT be a regular Training Day Game, in that I don't plan to critique everyone's moves. Besides, I want to play, too! :D (But I will point out particularly weedy actions. :groucho: ) Right now I am looking at everyone taking 20 turns the first round, then taking 10 per turn after that. Standard 24 hrs to say "Got it" , followed by 48 hrs to play.

I already have interest from stwils and mcdan, and possibly BoBtheBUILDER (if he buys PTW). One or two more will be good.

Roster:

Padma
stwils
mcdan (?)
BoB

So, all right, folks. Give me some input! :D

I vote for Warlord!

As for choosing a Random civ for us to be, do we really want to leave it to the computer to choose who we are?

I hope we get a civ that is industrious. And maybe religious.

Great going, Padma, for setting this up. I hope we have about 6 players.

20 turns each?

Anyway, lame computer and all, count me in.

I think I'll join in one too. :D Playing and keeping the log is a bit quicker than spending a good 30-60 minutes looking for any mistakes. :) I'm more of a regent player now, but we can go easy and start on warlord.

Pad - we could split it up. Half before you, half before me.

If you're still accepting people, then I wonder if I could be considered too? I'm fairly new to succ games and have recently started my 1st (N1-PTW Regent). At the moment I'm trying to get succ game experience, and this sounds like fun. Regent would be preferred, and all random settings sound great

Looks great. Definately count me in - as I said earlier in the Chieftain post. The set up looks interesting. Wonder who we will be???

Warlord is great for me but if the team goes for Regent I would still like to play - will work on studying barbarians (and not giving entertainers to my best city :) i.e. London in Sulla B  )

I see there is lots of interest in the game. Can we have more than 5 players - maybe make it 6 players?

Thanks for setting this up Padma - many many thanks. :goodjob:

Padma, why do you want us to do 20 turns at a time? Because we will move faster?

But what if someone ( ) does something foolish like "lose London" or not realize we have a peace treaty and invades... ahh the memories.) It would be quicker to get things back on track if someone else picked up after 10 turns rather than 20.

Just my thoughts...

I think you're being too hard on yourself stwils. The beauty of that move is that it gave you an opportunity to learn from it. I think we've all been there. I took a stab at a few GOTMs that I never finished or submitted because it just got too discouraging. I'd go on a farmer's gambit and the Americans or the Aztecs would roll me. It was disasterous. The only difference was that you were playing with some others when it happened. Look at Padma though... he started us off in ct3 with all sorts of shenanigans. ;) Besides... there are all sorts of new mistakes to make at higher levels! :)

BTW, here's the latest Emma update for those following. :)

Looks like you all have almost enough players for 2 games much like Sul5 A/B.

At 20 turns each it makes the early game move faster. As more and more cities are added or warfare gets heated 10 is more the norm. Sometimes games even get to 5 if the action gets too hot or turns press on for 15 - 20 minutes each.

Looks like this game will be starting shortly but I would encorage some warlord/Regent players to checkout LK33 and play 10 turns with no long term commitments. It will help fill the time between games ;).

Good luck all

Yeah, Mom Mom is my mom. It's so wierd, I didn't have two sets of grandparents so I never had to differentiate. There was just grandmom and grandpop. So now we've got Mimi and Poppop and Mom Mom and Grandpa and Grandmom (my stepmother).

I'm glad you like the pictures. I'm going to try and organize them better so you don't have to scroll through 140 some odd pictures every time. :)

@hotrod: I almost suggested something like that in my post, then changed my mind. I guess we could do it, but I wouldn't want it to be a competitive atmosphere. Maybe once both games hit certain benchmarks we would be able to compare progress. Wasn't cracker doing something like this Padma?

Whew! I just won my solo game I've been playing on Monarch. Perhaps describing it will tell you a little about myself. Or maybe it will just allow me to ramble :D

I started on a tiny grassland peninsula between two coasts. I sent two warriors up to explore and found the English and the Germans. Then I discovered that we shared a tiny continent that only took up one screen. I had never seen that crowded a start on a standard map. After settling the highest number of cities, I sent a bunch of warriors plus a Gallic Swordsman at Germany's two outlying cities, auto-razing one and losing at the other, and launching a premature Golden Age. England got a settler to the auto-razed city. I'm never attacking with warriors again. I got a great leader withstanding his counter-attack and sued for peace and tech. Rushing a forbidden palace in the center of my continent, I started producing Gallic Swordsmen in most of my cities, then threw them at the English, wiping them out except for a small island colony and getting another Great Leader, which I think I used for the Hanging Gardens. Turning those forces to the Germans, I eliminated them in 50 BC (unprecedented for me to gain control of a whole continent, albeit a tiny one, in that amount of time).

As I prepared to build up an army of horsemen to upgrade to cavalry and invade someone else, I realized I had one problem: no horses. On my whole continent. I then changed every city to a library, hoping to at least keep up in tech until I found another civ. Before long, China sent a galley my way, and I traded for contact with and maps of the three eastern Civs, plus Republic. I won the races for Sistine Chapel and J.S.Bach's while building Cathedrals and Universities in the rest of my cities. With my high literacy, I discovered Democracy way before anyone else and switched to it. I traded away some techs for gpt deals from China and Mongolia, and set research as high as it would go w/o a deficit. I kept doing this and got tech to 100% before long. I made contact with Spain and Russia, each of whom had massive amounts of land at about this time but were way behind in tech, and watched China take over Indian city after city.

I discovered steam power and trying to build railroads, and realized I didn't have any coal either. I traded for coal from China, I think, once they discovered it. Some time around here Spain declared war on me because I didn't cave in to their demands, so I allied with Russia against them. I ended up building Universal Suffrage right before war weariness kicked in. China then turned on the Mongolians, wiping them out around the start of the modern age. Spain also took many Russian cities, only to lose them back to Russia. In the modern age I had no wonder competition since I was so far ahead in tech, so I build the Internet, SETI, the U.N., and the Manhattan Project, then started toward Space Flight. Then I realized I had no aluminum! I went to satellites and eventually traded for aluminum from China. I build spaceship parts and ICBMS in my cities. I didn't notice China land tanks on my land, and they took over my only unprotected cities. I took a mutual protection pact with Spain and traded for aluminum, and let the Chinese attack a metropolis with fortified Mech Infantry. With Spain on my side, I took the city back and launched five ICBMs for the major Chinese cities. I kept building ICBMs and parts, and by the time I had built the last spaceship part in 1846, their whole continent was a nuclear wasteland. My "closest" competitors, China and Spain, hadn't even begun their first part.

So, having won a Monarch game with a crowded start on an ugly, tiny continent without horses, coal, or aluminum, with an ancient golden age, by such a large margin, I think I'm ready to make the jump to Emperor.

Here's the list of interested players:

name - vote - skill level

1) Padma - abstain - regent (3)
2) stwils - warlord - warlord (?) (2)
3) BoBtheBUILDER - abstain - regent (?) (3)
4) ShadowDragon - regent - monarch/emperor (4.5)
5) Kevinicus - warlord - warlord (?) (2)
6) mcdan - warlord - warlord (?) (2)
7) Nad - regent - emperor (5)
8) chieftess - regent (?) - regent (3)
9) CivGeneral - [?] - [?]

Anything with (?) indicates a guess, and [?] indicates no information. Average skill level is 3.06 or just above regent. Including my guess, the vote is tied between regent and warlord. If any of you want to update your information, I'll update this list.

Since there is so much interest, perhaps we ought to split this into two games or perhaps try something that I thought up a while ago: Anybody would be able to play each set of 10 turns over, say, 48 hours, then vote for the best played save file. We could set up suitable restrictions, like not being able to win if you have in the last 4 rounds, to give everyone a chance to win. There are cons to such an approach, like a high level of involvement in this game, so it's not a perfect approach, but it is an interesting idea :).

And I've decided I'll play even if you choose warlord.

I've had very successful games as England. Take a look in the tournament at season 3-4. ;) It'll force you to be more agreesive. Also, search for the Demogame1 scenario in the Demogame 2 citizens subforum. You can play as England (they started on a very isolated continent), and still keep up with the AI in tech research! You just have to know how to use your civ traits to their fullest.

The reason many of us don't want to play England or Persia, is that we have already played (or are playing) a SG game as England or Persia. Nothing against either. Maybe we just want another experience. :jump:

Yikes!

I was kept away from my computer by RL for about 24 hrs, and look at the posts this has spawned!

I'm beginning to think we should follow CT's suggestion and break this up into a couple of games, one Regent and one Warlord. Not as a competition, but just as a means to satisfy this many players. Chieftess, would you like to take some of these? :D I'll keep one at Warlord for the lower level players: stwils, mcdan, Kevinicus, BoB (?), <others?>. If not, I'll see what I can do.

20 turns for the first round is only because it helps the early game move faster. You know the times, one or two cities built, press <Enter>, press<Enter>, etc., waiting for things to get built so you can *do* something.

And yes, the only reason to not use Persia or England is because they are the civs from ct3 and SUL5b. I want something different. ;)

Would like to do Warlord with Padma, stwils, Bob (if he wants - must think that Regent is calling his name but hopefully might stick around...) and Kevinicus - and of course anyone else. Thanks to Padma for getting this going. Welcome to Chieftess as well as she heads up the other team.

Bob's right stwils - think how far you (me too!) have come since the beginning of the Chieftess and Sulla game - there is always more to learn in this game. That's got to be one reason we all love it so. :D

I took a stab at a few GOTMs that I never finished or submitted because it just got too discouraging.

AUGH  -so true. Just tried GOTM for the first time - #14 - I saw the words "Diety level" but plunged ahead anyway just to see - lost at 90 AD (or surrendered to Persia rather ) - too painful to continue game - but it was a treat to play the game and read all the other comments.

I will keep on trying these GOTM's - really like Cracker's posts and am about to try #15. Stwils - you might give that a try - this month is Monarch, no spoilers but you can read the posts after you play. Apparently Cracker has a few laughs up his sleeves as well - according to the forum. And - yeah - I don't have any plans to post my games yet... Saw Barker was up there for game #13 in 44th place - which is great in the hierarchy of the game with hundreds of players.

BTW, here's the latest Emma update for those following.

Great photos - love seeing the red hat and all the pink outfits - and meeting MomMom! (Saw that pacifier - my little one did the same thing - no harm - those things are a gift not only to the child - but to all of us parents as well. :) ) She is such a happy child!

OK - ready to play whenever !!! PTW is installed, patched and ready to go!

I will say this, without spoiling anything, there are a few easter eggs that are pretty funny. :) Stwils, I would definately try it. I think Cracker wanted to see how much people learned from his start position primer. This has a nice start position that, while it forces you to make some choices, can get you off to a good start even if you make some mistakes. The spoiler thread opens tomorrow I think, but I believe the rule for viewing will be to know the whole world map, as is usual. Unfortunately I am not at that point yet. :(

Bob, I'm glad you are sticking with our "original crew.":) :) :)

I wanted to play Cracker's GOTM, but until my computer situation improves, I have all I can handle. (Dell sent wrong monitor, sent two video cards that were wrong and did not jive with any drivers, and the tech man they sent out here was just as baffled as I was. Anyway, the 3rd video card is coming Monday. Funny. Each time they say they are sending me a certain video card, it always turns out to be the identical one that doesn't work.)

I can use my laptop, but it is slow and small. I did hook up an old keyboard I had to it, and that makes typing easier and surely makes using the keyboard for the unit's movement MUCH easier than on the laptop keypad.

So I can stay in touch and play. It's like an aunt of mine said once when someone asked her how she was. She said, "Oh I'm just fine except one leg in lame."

I had a thought about the civ we might play as. Since we don't want to be Persia or England again, Padma how about you suggesting 3 - 5 civs we could choose from. Then let the enemies all be Random.

Or, you set up the game as all Random, and when you start it, if we either Persia or England, start over!

And please turn off that d*** respawn thing. (I'll never forget wiping out that Zulu city and seeing it instantly reappear on the other side of our island.) And we don't want our enemies to all be culturally linked, do we?

I'm just thinking outloud.:crazyeye:

True, it wouldn't be the same map if CT just starts her own game. But she would be taking the Regent-level game, While I would be running a Warlord-level game. And unless someone with more time (and skill) than I have wants to take the 400BC save I hope to produce within 24 hrs and "tweak" it for a Regent game, or unless someone wants to generate maps for both "teams" to use (I don't want to, because I don't want to know the map before starting. :) ), I don't know what other course to take.

Ok, now this is an 'admin thread' for the two teams. Padma, how far has your team gotten? (turn/year wise). Ours is going slowly, but ShadowDragon should be able to play his turns today.

Also (if it's not too late), what do you think of the 20 turns for 5 players the first round? That's 20% of the game right there... (maybe more like 25% on a regent game).

Padma
Jan 09, 2003, 09:17 AM
Our 2nd player finished last night, and we are now at 2150BC.

As for the 20 turns per player, you have a good point. I initially proposed it when I was expecting maybe a total of 4 players. If I had been thinking, I would have recommended a "stepdown" approach for the first round: 20, 15, 10, 10, 10, .... Maybe we can still do that? 3rd player plays 15, and everyone after plays 10?
