Well,

Seeing as anarres vs ERIKK seems to be such a good idea Col and I have started our own version...

Melifluous versus Col

Exactly the same set up as the other game, pangea, 6 AI civs to destroy, random everything else

Here is the game
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/MelVsColWHO.jpg

Just for the record the Pompeys (thats me) are the Americans
And ..... the Lankies (thats Col) are the Celts

Let the fun begin

here is my start pos

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/MelvsColMelStart3950.jpg

Hmm - Early on I get a warrior from a hut, further on more barbarians decide to join my cause. The game goes well and our primitive records of the surroundings is improving...

More huts provide greater knowledge and our city is expanding rapidly...

By turn 20, all is going well

Some more stats at 3000BC

Also made contact with another civ...

Hmm interesting...

Ah and so its comes to be 2670BC, the mighty empire of America is a force to behold...
See their cities shimmer on the white gold plains...
All civilisations that know of such things pale with envy at the efficiency of the mighty american people.

See now the worker women in the vineyards, babies on hip, ensuring that the precious grape gains all the attention it needs...
And to the south the men, with scythes flashing in the afternoon sun, reap the rewards of another fine harvest...

A lone scout sends word that far away a primitive tribe has been found with the paint of nearby dyes staining their faces...
With a large expanse of jungle to the north, our scout feels for them and trades some quaint local art for the knowledge of working the bronze into tools for taming the unquiet trees.

As the sun sets on another good year, I search the stars for answers...
A blazing light falls from the sky and lands nearby. In the morning workers investigate and find strangely heavy metal amonst the devastation in the hills...

A sign say the people, we have been chosen say the people...

Onward.

Well it is now 1950BC

Expansion is continuing apace and the sum of our knowledge is undoubtedly the greatest in the land...

In fact the people love me....

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/MelvsColMelLove1950.jpg

It would seem now that both I and the Lankies have met the interesting Romans... I worry for this culture as they still seem to have only a single city...

As for the Lankies, I can see at least 3 cities and a settler on the way for a fourth...

 Good work Lankies

Well despite the slow start , whippets have been observed crossing the desert and swinging through the jungle. Lancashire is expanding.

The accursed Ottomans refused to eat black pudding and war has been declared. Their city was razed and a new city has been built on the ruins.

Lancashire is behind. But thats never a safe place to have a Lanky ;)

Our artists are drawing maps and they will be delivered here soon.

They were playing tonight, I guess they are just slackers ;)

I have just started noting Mel has unusual titles in his PBEM games. Here he is 'the Unspeakable', and in my Deathmatch Head-to-head he is 'Saint Mellifluous'. 'Saint Mellifluous' really takes the piss since he started WWIII :rotfl:

col
Jan 21, 2003, 01:37 AM
The game isnt dead at all. The Ottomans, my nearest neighbours were resistant to assimilation. Deploying the ancient Lanky arts of Ecky Thump, their cities were taken and football stadia rushed. They promptly decided to go 'on holiday' in the far south. They cannot escape.

Spain meekly joined the United Lanky empire when Madrid and Barcelona acknoweledged the superioty of Manchester in all thing relating to football. They have pledged never to compete again in the renamed Lanky empire champions trophy.

The Americans have made some gains in the North. The scandinavians are now playing football with a strangely misshapen ball and go into huddles and talk about 3rd down and five. What is this strange language.

Our leaders hve pledged to free them and bring them back into the righteous paths of Lanky football. Every player must play for Manchester is our cry!

Melifluous
Jan 21, 2003, 03:07 AM
Yes the American peoples are expanding still...

Some over zealous troops went on a spirit quest to establish contact with some of the heathen tribes to the North and when those tribes heard of the wonders of American all but fell over themselves to become part of Glorious America.

In fact as this small hand crafted map shows the third city we visited had not a single opposing force!

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/MelvsColCopenhagen.jpg

On another front, more of our erm ... explorers ... found a strange race who even wore clothes on their heads! After visiting two of their cities we found the people desperately unhappy and in need of some 'real' culture...
So our 'explorers' liberated the poor Arab peoples, unfortunately in the first city the celebrations after liberation grew out of hand and a massive firestorm destroyed the whole city. However the refugees were taken in at the Arabs former capital city and rehoused by the American missionaries working there.

Our modest capital is now as big as can be supported on the banks of the river and from a nearby mountain the following artists impression was composed.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/MelvsColArtImp650BC.jpg
This great work of art has been hastily copied and adorns many a wall in the Great American Empire.

On the Literary front a piece of work by a young Arab called Plato has been circulating amongst the intellectual elite and several of the practices detailed therein are in the process of being employed. The Empire is in a state of frenzy as new socio-political reform sweeps the land. Elsewhere the construction of several large repositories of knowledge has recently been completed.

Wines from the south add to the local produce to make fine wines, dyes from the north make our clothing ever more splendid and intricate ornaments made from the ivory from the east make the lives of all who live in America ever more pleasant. Also it is rumoured that precious gems have recently been spotted by the prospectors to the north.

It is the year 650BC and all is well in the land of the great American peoples...

Long live America

OOC (Out of character) post...

Thanks for the nudge propain ... :goodjob:

In a less flowery way Spain is in trouble, the Lankies (Celts) have crushed it to the far east, as well as the pesky ottomans as well.
I have all but taken out the Scandinavians and Arabs...
The game year is 650BC and neither of our forces have felt the need to clash as yet (Lankies and Americans that is) although it came close about 5 turns ago when Col decided to wander a horseman through my lands...
So I told him if he did it again without prior agreement we would have war...

Oh and Anarchy sucks...

We open a trading station so that our poor empire might trade a few scraps with the rich and powerful americans. They respond by sending a swordsman stomping his way into our area. We can offer to trade beer, chips and mushy peas for coke n burgers. We can also show a wonderful new game played with a round ball that is much superior to any other ball game.

Is this any way to treat your neighbour?

The world looks on to see if Melifluous really intends to fire the opening salvo of the war or whether reason will prevail.

col
Jan 25, 2003, 07:47 AM
No blood for horsies

The people take up the cry as our defenceless trading station is ruthlessly crushed by the advancing Us forces. Without declaring war or asking if we minded a peacekeeping corps stationed next to it, the brutal minded forces of Mel have murdered innocent civilians and razed the city.

The Romans are so outraged at this atrocity that they pledge their legions to the Lanky cause. Our horsmen are ready and willing to retreat if threatened - er that should be - to defend their homeland to the death.

The US forces will surely realise that their supply chain will shortly become very stretched.

We will not forget. The name of Melifluous will go down in the anals (sic) of history.

Peaceful trading city my foot...

The mighty American forces have crushed the military outpost near the eastern horse colony. In several of the Lankies houses we found hidden many wepaons of mass distraction and crates of empty Mushy Pea tins. Old stock the Lankies said but we burnt the lot to the ground anyway.
Far to the East the loyal Koreans leap to join our side as the Lanky war machine rolls east over the Ottomans and the Spanish no longer can they sit and wait for the Enemy to come to them.

The battlelines are drawn.
The Enemy must be defeated...

Melifluous

PS. Ok who let that damn whippet out here...
I dont care if it looked cute, crate it up with the rest and ship it out to the Koreans... Damnit do I have to do everything round here...

The battle for Preston rages. The first stack is repelled as warriors down swordsmen. A gallic warrior dies before he can score the goal that will take this game ito extra time. Reinforcements are being barged in from all over the county. Will Preston hold aor will a strategic reverse advance be necessary?

Pix to follow.

The game is in the balance. We have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana skin.

col
Jan 26, 2003, 03:37 AM
The stack retreats! Is this a cunning plan to tempt us out from behind our defenses. Do I see a Wooden horse being wheeled forwards?

Run away. Yankees.

I fart in your general direction.
We have a few small flesh wounds that can be healed in a turn or so.....

Melifluous
Jan 26, 2003, 03:47 AM
The American forces continue to advance on the Lanky front..

The cunning Lankies are proving difficult to shift. The river between our base camp and their city is certainly not helping matters. The Lanky people have come up with a cunning inovation on our sturdy swordsman...
It would appear to be a swordsman, but when cornered shows a remarkable turn of speed... Perfect for the retreat they know must be coming...

In other news our scientists have come up with many new inovations and we are now working on an improved swordsman to wipe the Lankies from the face of the earth.

The Romans to the east refused to see things our way, so we made peace and will leave them with their city.

To the North the Vikings are annoying us again and will be destroyed as the Arabs were to the south.

The war continues,

Melifluous

col
Jan 26, 2003, 03:52 AM
Uh Oh - the stack returns after a couple of elastoplast are strategically placed. But our defense is strong. We can hold out for a 0-0 draw here, hope to take the game into extra time and win on penalties.

Our new french striker has proved remarkably versatile. It is truly a golden age of footie in Lancashire.

The slighly deaf Sir Alex is heard order all swordsmen to henceforth eat garlic to iimmediatlely improve their speed.

What was once a proud stack is reduced to two battered spears and a donkey. Will Pompey recover from this set back? They have a massive lead in production capacity and can replace their losses.

Hehe - Walls+river+fortify is a tough nut to crack.

Pompey has learned that the Lankies too have resources and resolve. This battle has been won but there is far to go before the whole world will ackowledge the might of the Lancastrian race.

Oh and in 30BC the following was completed...

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/MelVsColSun30BC.jpg

The American people have all the grain they can eat and a training camp to keep their weight down in every city now...

We will not become a nation of over weight fast food addicts, like some garlic eating peoples that we could mention.

We notice with regret that whilst we took our part in the ceasefire negotiated with the Lanky people, they have found it neccessary to brutally exterminate the poor Spanish people as they attempted to cobble together a few rude shelters to house their battered and broken people.

We, however, are holding true to our word of not attacking the Vikings and merely protect our Northern front against the relentless Vikings who still refuse to listen to what we have to offer.

We merely ask that in return for us not grinding their people into dust, that they allow us the use of one of their cities to use as a marine research site.

Poor lonely Vikings, scratching a meagre existence from the tundra in the north have spat in our face and almost killed the lone horsed scout we sent to offer them this gracious proposal.

Our scout has learned and came back a charismatic and captivating person and did much to stifffen the resolve of the people of Philidelphia.

Our people itch for this period of peace to end so that we teach these Vikings a lesson they cannot forget.

More Golden Wonders than a crisp factory. All those shields.

Tragically while our forces went for a well earned vacation on the Costa del Sol, the Spanish threw themselves under the hooves of our horses. We told them that our troops were just visiting but they would not listen as we entered their capital, and left the game.

We shall endeavour to preserve other civilisations for their unique contribution to global culture - and their future vote.

Well,

It finished...

Not with a bang but with a whimper...

After a little discussion between the two of us, ok me bragging and Col listening, he decided to to resign in this game...

It was 380AD, I had 30-40 knights, was 4 turns from Military Tradition and therefore cavalry, had built the Pyramids, Sun Tzu's, the Collossus and the Heroic Epic (Pyramids and Collossus = GA for America), I had built my FP (Col hadn't yet) and he had about 20-30 horsemen waiting for Cavalry...
I had been blessed with 2 GL's in the game (1 rushed SunTzu, the other built my knight army), and Col even with his many Elite Horsemen got none :(

My tech rate had been and still was 4 turns per tech and still making money and Cols was about 9/10 turns per tech....

It would seem that the Start Positions pretty much determined the winner in this game...

I still believe Col to be a better player than I, so we have decided to Start Mel vs Col 2!

ERIKK made us a map and got the level of the AI straight, but more about this on the New MvC2 thread...

Oh when I have the latest save on me I will post it here along with the admin password for that game so that anyone who wants to have a look at this game can...
