View Full Version : Staff PBEM
Matrix Jan 04, 2003, 04:08 PM This a normal PBEM, except that all players are probably quite familiar. :) This is the game:
Map: Standard size, random shape and land mass.
Climate: Normal, Temperate temp., 5 billion years old.
Barbs: roaming.
Players
1. Matrix: Straland (Scandinavia)
2. Grey Fox: Egypt
3. Col: Iroqious
4. munzy: Random
5. Chieftess: Ottomans
6. SunTzu: Random
7. WildFire444: Spain
But we haven't started yet!
damunzy Jan 06, 2003, 07:50 AM Can't wait, hurry up! :D
Matrix Jan 06, 2003, 11:55 AM Yea, eh, there's a little problem.
In a week or so, we'll start and then SunTzu will join as too. ;) So actually the Civs I've presented above aren't correct anymore as all (except gonzo and me) have random Civs. And we'll start again.
Sorry for the delay. :o
Chieftess Jan 08, 2003, 01:59 PM I'll be the Ottomans.
col Jan 08, 2003, 02:13 PM Mm - is gonzo still eligible ?
(if you see what I mean :) )
Matrix Jan 08, 2003, 02:22 PM Noted. ;)
While waiting, do you have a preference for the map? I don't. :D
Only game settings: default settings (except culturally linked starting positions) and no AI.
Added: Yes, Col. :) Gonzo explicitly told me he'll still join this PBEM. And Munzy isn't staff member either...
Knight-Dragon Jan 08, 2003, 07:38 PM Why isn't TF playing? :mischief:
Matrix Jan 09, 2003, 03:27 AM First of all, he's a beta tester, so if he wants to, he's got have two Civ3's on his computer (one with beta version and one with 1.14). Secondly he has exams soon.
I know; poor excuses. :p
And cracker doesn't play because he finds PTW too erroneous.
col Jan 09, 2003, 03:54 AM Erroneous??? Strange choice of word.
Do Errikk, Anarres and I qualify as Torunament staff??
Napoleon Hitler Jan 09, 2003, 02:09 PM Originally posted by Matrix

Anyways, sorry to interrupt. :D
And one more thing, this about TF being a beta tester, does that mean he is testing the patch that is to come out after v1.14? Like v1.23 or sumpin'?
Matrix Jan 09, 2003, 02:38 PM Well Col, I guess you, anarres and ERIKK are half a staff member. But the more the merrier. :) You mention three names, so either you have to draw, or who first comes, goes...

Me neither.
Just watching with interest. If you need more players , drop me a line
Matrix Jan 10, 2003, 04:51 AM Well, we do have two slots open. As long as you won't be the bottleneck in the progress of the game, you're welcome. ;)
col Jan 10, 2003, 05:25 AM Ok - I play preety hard core as Erikk would say.
Count me in
colinf_AT_btinternet.com
I'll play the Iriquouis - feel like some scalps ....

Something like that... Some beta testers have more than enough time on their hands to play atleast 1 turn... :mischief:
:sheep:
Matrix Jan 16, 2003, 03:14 PM The game has begun (finally)! :yeah:
Remember to read Melifluous' thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41227) to avoid playing this game on chieftain level. ;)
Grey Fox Jan 16, 2003, 03:39 PM Umm... which Difficulty should it be then?
Grey Fox Jan 16, 2003, 03:45 PM And when I go to:
Multiplayer->Change to Local Host->Play by Email->Mode:Load Game
I can't change the difficulty... :(
EDIT: Oh, I should change the difficulty BEFORE I load the game...
Well, I still don't know which difficulty to change to...
Chieftess Jan 16, 2003, 04:23 PM I'm comfortable with regent now. :) Monarch, maybe... but not alone.
SunTzu Jan 16, 2003, 11:44 PM Hey everyone i got the game today! i'll need someone to walk me through the process of setting up the pbem game...
Also can i be the Germans? :)
Matrix Jan 17, 2003, 04:05 AM It's too late for that SunTzu. Unless we start again.
I started the game at Monarch.
Chieftess Jan 17, 2003, 04:18 AM Well, here goes nothing! Regent is kind of getting easy... :D

SunTzu Jan 17, 2003, 05:16 AM lol i find Civ3 not to be that much different than Civ2, although i really haven't gotten far in it :/ and i've only played Chieftan hehe i will win! :D
Chieftess Jan 17, 2003, 06:51 AM Gee, who's this newbie? :p Be sure to read up on strategy and look at Lt. 'Killer' M's FAQ and other info. :D
Anyway, good luck SunTzu!
SunTzu Jan 17, 2003, 08:11 AM why thank ya Chieftess :D
I do feel wierd, i'm a newbie here while i've been here for 2+ years lol wierd....
Good luck all! now lets get the game rolling :D
col Jan 17, 2003, 10:35 AM Bring it on.
Sharpen my tomahawk. Its haircuttin time......
Main difference as go up in level is the numbe of 'free' happy citizens you get. You need to watch your cities dont fall into disorder.
Please, please please no more jungle starts Matrix
Chieftess Jan 17, 2003, 10:37 AM Hey, that was supposed to be a surprise. :p
col Jan 17, 2003, 10:48 AM @Matrix - do you want us to post in this thread when we play - or email you?
By the way its not reached me yet. Come on GF. Decide where to settle.
Grey Fox Jan 17, 2003, 11:07 AM I couldn't play yesterday evening/night because I didn't know the difficulty... and now I just arrived home from school, and I will play my first turn.
Grey Fox Jan 19, 2003, 08:39 AM So, Col, are you gonna play your turn?
col Jan 19, 2003, 08:51 AM I will as soon as I get the save!

Thats the right email.
edit: 24h later and save never arrived.
col Jan 19, 2003, 11:32 AM Ok - set difficulty to Monarch and played my turn - not bad starting position - but no cows or wheat :(
Sent on to Munzy
SunTzu Jan 19, 2003, 04:15 PM for future reference, since i'm new to Civ3 how would i open the game? and what folder would i put the save file in?
Chieftess Jan 19, 2003, 05:27 PM You can create a seperate folder, like saves\PBEM\Staff PBEM\. You'd also open it from the main menu. (I'm not sure if the load exploit was fixed in 1.14).
Grey Fox Jan 19, 2003, 05:40 PM Originally posted by Chieftess

Matrix Jan 20, 2003, 03:50 AM Yep! After that you can just load it from the main menu. :)
SunTzu Jan 22, 2003, 06:42 AM bump bump bump bupm
col Jan 22, 2003, 06:56 AM Who's got the save??
Chieftess Jan 22, 2003, 07:50 AM Didn't Grey Fox give it to you? Or, did you finish yet? If so, I haven't gotten it from Munzy.
col Jan 22, 2003, 09:43 AM I sent it to Munzy so I guess he has it.
Can you PM me with all his email addresses and I'll send it again.
SunTzu Jan 22, 2003, 09:44 AM can we not just post the saves here?
WildFire Jan 22, 2003, 09:47 AM Originally posted by SunTzu

;)
Of course, it might work better.
col Jan 22, 2003, 09:54 AM We can - but upload is a little flaky and it will fill up the server pretty rapidly if every PBEM game did that.
Give Munzy a :boot:
SunTzu Jan 22, 2003, 11:06 AM well let me fill you all in on a little secret.
civ2 pbem's we upload the saves to thegame thread.
And the server is fine, and every PBEM in Civ2 does it
col Jan 22, 2003, 11:09 AM Ok then - here's the save I sent Munzy three days ago.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/Staff_4000_BC--Munzy.SAV

SunTzu, the PTW save files are much bigger than the Civ2 ones. In one of my PBEM games, we'd been using the Uploads feature to toss files betw us. Turns out we're holding 45 Mbs hostage, when I request TF to delete them... ;)
SunTzu Jan 23, 2003, 06:47 AM ok, guess email then..
Grey Fox Jan 23, 2003, 06:52 AM Originally posted by SunTzu
ok, guess email then.. Or we could just upload the saves, Zipped with a Prefix name, like Staff-000X.zip and TF could just delete those when the game is complete...
Chieftess Jan 23, 2003, 07:05 AM Which is why I asked TF once about the ability to keep track of your own uploads so you can delete them.
Grey Fox Jan 23, 2003, 07:22 AM Originally posted by Chieftess
Which is why I asked TF once about the ability to keep track of your own uploads so you can delete them. Yeah, take a look at my idea in the Site Feedback. I think it is in Knight-Dragon's Delete files Thread. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?postid=724334#post724334
col Jan 23, 2003, 09:24 AM Email works better for me than uploading - faster and I can keep track of files sent and received. Dare I suggest that my computer crashes less often than CFC. I'm in about 10 pbem games at present and uploading every time sould be a pain in the ****.
See Anarres thread for a future possibility.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.phps=&threadid=42401
SunTzu Jan 23, 2003, 09:36 AM well thats what we do at Civ2 PBEM, we zip our files, right now i'm asking everyone to go back and deleted their old saved games, i think so far we've freed up about 200mb of space lol
col Jan 23, 2003, 10:08 AM Just curious but how do you delete a file you've uploaded. I thought only TF could do that?
Matrix Jan 24, 2003, 07:57 AM Just edit the post, col. ;)
On topic: I want progress! Where's munzy?!
SunTzu Jan 24, 2003, 09:08 AM I talked ot Munzy and i dunno what the hell he's doing.
BTW i don't think i posted my email
WMCS44@aol.com
damunzy Jan 25, 2003, 02:25 PM Thanks Sunny. I said that I haven't received the email. my email is munzy76@hotmail.com incase that was missed. I will not be checking here very often so I would suggest that we continue emailing...if it ever gets through. :) I will download the file from the board later when I get home.
damunzy Jan 25, 2003, 02:27 PM I am thinking of making a new email address munzy76PBEM@hotmail.com so I can make sure it doesn't get filled up. :) Or maybe munzy76StaffPBEM@hotmail.com . ;)
Matrix Jan 25, 2003, 04:52 PM Finally!
I was almost afraid we'd have to restart without you, munzy! Luckily we don't have to. ;)
SunTzu Jan 29, 2003, 08:48 AM HELLA BUMP!
Come on people lets actually try and get past the first turn
Matrix Jan 29, 2003, 04:11 PM Tough decisions need to be made, SunTzu.
But seriously, where is it? I actually want more than one active PBEM (out of four).
Grey Fox Jan 29, 2003, 04:17 PM Yeah, people, start playing!
col Jan 29, 2003, 04:24 PM Sent to Munzy and posted save in this thread. Has he played it??
damunzy Jan 31, 2003, 11:47 AM Sorry guys....my computer has been on the fritz and I have been so damn busy that I haven't even been able to post in the last days. I had to reload the system - I will load PTW up tonight and take my turn. Once again, profound apologies. I have also been MIA in another PBEM and I need to apologize to those people also.
damunzy Jan 31, 2003, 05:53 PM Chieftess, it is your turn.
WildFire Jan 31, 2003, 06:04 PM (Paying back munzy)
I thought it was a play by EMAIL
:p
damunzy Jan 31, 2003, 07:00 PM Yeah, if I had her email account I would mail it but I don't see it in any of her posts.
Chieftess Feb 02, 2003, 07:59 AM Ok, I got it. BTW, it's jgasioro@bcpl.net
You know, I don't even have SunTzu's email. ;)
Anyway:
The Ottoman people settle down by a river, as they start to work with their domesticated cattle. It's a lushious world, but many seek to explore the world around them...

Grey Fox Feb 02, 2003, 12:26 PM What if I was japan and you saw that I had horses?
anarres Feb 02, 2003, 01:12 PM They would be scared of you, which is no bad thing. ;)
But I accept that people may play differently with that information, and I wasn't saying you should post your starts, just wanted to suggest it...

Grey Fox Feb 02, 2003, 01:47 PM The Grey Fox hopes you can't Abstain on the UN Vote in MP...
Matrix Feb 03, 2003, 08:44 AM GF, I have no idea about UN.
I've sent Gonzo a PM that it's his turn, cos he won't get an e-mail I reckon.
gonzo_for_civ Feb 03, 2003, 08:20 PM What? E-mail? Who? Why? When? Where? How?
My e-mail address is david@cornempire.newezone.com and it's got a pretty large limit so it should be fine. Us CornEmpire Programmers get our perks, if you know what i mean
I'll download and play tomorrow since I'm on a comp w/out PTW right now.
SunTzu Feb 07, 2003, 09:25 AM BUMP BUMP BUMP!
col Feb 07, 2003, 09:29 AM Not so much bumping as heart massage needed to get some life in this game. I guess some folks just dont want to play.

He'd better hurry or someone else should take over.
SunTzu Feb 09, 2003, 10:51 PM i was just informed by Gonzo via AIM, that he can't play this pbem anymore....we need a replacement
Matrix Feb 10, 2003, 02:51 AM Ok. The first one that shouts is in. ;)
WildFire Feb 10, 2003, 11:17 AM SHOUT!
Do I have to be staff?
EDIT: Turns out I do have to be staff.
Good luck finding someone.
Matrix Feb 10, 2003, 04:36 PM Who said you should be staff? We have an open spot here...
Grey Fox Feb 10, 2003, 04:51 PM Well, this game needs to go faster...
Come on people, lets get this thing going. Will WildFire take over for Gonzo or what?
WildFire Feb 10, 2003, 07:24 PM In the Chat room CT said it was only for Staff.
I will take over though....
SunTzu Feb 10, 2003, 07:40 PM please take over and please move fast, i'd like to play a Civ3 PBEM, since i enjoy SP Civ3 games, i would love MP Civ3 games :D
Matrix Feb 11, 2003, 03:15 AM I suggest we restart, so that WildFire444 can play with his own name. We've only played one turn yet, so...
I'll play and send the first turn within an hour.
Grey Fox Feb 11, 2003, 10:53 AM So, do we have to do the "set correct Difficulty" each time we load the game?
Or just the first turn?
WildFire Feb 11, 2003, 01:25 PM Just the first time for everyone. Than just load through the normal screen.
Matrix Feb 11, 2003, 01:28 PM Excuse me. I left my cd at my girlfriend's. :o Perhaps someone else could restart the game...
Also sorry for replying so late, but I was working all day.
WildFire Feb 12, 2003, 01:39 PM The order is below. I have no clue as to Grey Fox's email so it is also below. It is on regent when you do the wrap around :)

I was just recently appointed as a Tourny Staff member and I also noticed that all of the slots are full. I hope that there would be another Staff PBEM in the future :).
Matrix Feb 18, 2003, 02:38 AM I'm not starting any other "escargot" game. http://www.smilies.nl/schmoll.gif
Grey Fox Feb 18, 2003, 09:56 AM Escargot??
Anyways, it feels like nobody wants to play this game.
If we continued in this pace, we will be happy to be done in 2006.
WildFire Feb 18, 2003, 10:27 AM Now I know what it feels like to create a game, just to have it die.....
AFTER 1 TURN! C'mon, you think STAFF members would visit this site enough and would actually be interested in playing a PBEM game because it is, after all, the Civilization Fanatics Center! If you dont like civ, how would you be a mod?
Matrix Feb 18, 2003, 11:09 AM "escargot" = French for "snail".
But I agree WF. That and because it's fun to play a game with known people is the reason I wanted to start this game. But then, were is the save?
WildFire Feb 18, 2003, 11:10 AM Somewhere between col and munzy, I believe. Chieftess hasnt recieved it yet, and I beleive that col is back since he has started the OCC game again. So it looks like munzy might be stalling us...
