View Full Version : Deathmatch PBEM
Matrix Jan 10, 2003, 03:27 PM I just finished a scenario, actually for the purpose of starting a PBEM, starting in the future era (i.e. having all technologies) with the world full. :)
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41299
http://www.straland.com/junk/Civ3Deathmatch.gif
Is there anyone who'd like to play it with me?
Players
1. Unregister GMT-5 (Random)
2. WildFire444 GMT-5 (Persians)
3. CivAddict2002 GMT-8 (Germans)
4. DogBoy GMT-8 (Romans)
5. Plexus GMT-8 (Japan)
6. Matrix GMT+1 (Scandinavia)
7. Kevinicus GMT+1 (Arabia)
8. Melifluous GMT (French)
WildFire Jan 10, 2003, 05:04 PM Sign me up Matrix. This is just like the other one i was doing (Advanced Start PBEM) but stalin cant play anymore. If that is Russia (brown) i will be them, or if they are taken i will be the red color which i assume might be Babylon.
Let the wars begin!
Unregister Jan 10, 2003, 05:07 PM Sign me up! I will be green, purple, red,or brown
Matrix Jan 10, 2003, 05:33 PM The colour don't say anything! You may choose your own Civ. :)
By the way, won't it be best if we have no Civ-specific abilities? Only the Americans have a better unit (F16)...
WildFire Jan 10, 2003, 07:13 PM True, in that case, i will choose the Persians just cause i like Xerxes's leader head. :p
CivAddict2002 Jan 10, 2003, 07:52 PM I'm available for play. My e-mail is civaddict2002@yahoo.com I don't care what starting position I get. I just want to be the Germans.
DogBoy Jan 10, 2003, 07:54 PM Sounds like fun to me. Romans all the way. I guess you are picking random starting positions. gkrgreene@earthlink.net
Plexus Jan 10, 2003, 08:05 PM I'm so in, I'll play as Japan. Me want purple start. :D
Matrix Jan 11, 2003, 04:15 AM Wow! This goes fast!
There are some players here... You can all guarantee you'll be able to play almost every day? (Holidays etc. can go slower...)
And where do you all live?
Matrix: GMT+1
Unregister: ?
WildFire444: ?
CivAddict2002: ?
DogBoy: GMT-8
Plexus: GMT-8
Kevinicus Jan 11, 2003, 05:14 AM Oh me as Arabia as I see Romans have been taken. :)
Matrix Jan 11, 2003, 05:34 AM Ok! And do you really live in Rome?
Melifluous Jan 11, 2003, 06:00 AM Hmm OK...
Sign me up...
I would love to be pink and French...
Melifluous GMT...(or CET -1) hehe
Bring it on...
WildFire Jan 11, 2003, 08:24 AM Eastern State Time for me and Unregister.
Kevinicus Jan 11, 2003, 09:10 AM Originally posted by Matrix

No but in the same time zone. :crazyeye: :D
CivAddict2002 Jan 11, 2003, 09:15 AM I live on west coast USA and play around 10pm - midnight.
Matrix Jan 11, 2003, 09:57 AM I've made the sequence as in my first post here. :) I thought this would be the best thing to do if we want to play one turn a day. Only the sequence does matter for who starts where. Here's the sequence:
Player 1: pink
Player 2: cyan
Player 3: green
Player 4: purple
Player 5: blue
Player 6: brown
Player 7: yellow
Player 8: red
The only question is: who's player one? I think that should be random. So I let Excel give me a random number between 1 and 8, and it gave me...5. So that should be Unregister. :)
Does anyone disagree with this? If not, he may start the game and send it to CivAddict2002 and so on and so forth.
DogBoy Jan 11, 2003, 10:16 AM Let's start.
anarres Jan 11, 2003, 10:28 AM Matrix - I would have joined this but I was too late. Instead Melifluous and I have decidied to start our own Deathmatch gamer on Deity against 6AI. Should be pretty scary for the first 50 turns or so...
What I discovered when starting tha game is that it appears you are to be able to set the player location independant of the player order.
After loading it in the mulitplayer screen you can add human/AI players as normal, and for each one you can set a number in a box to the left of the player name. These numbers correspond to the player numbers in the editor, and the MP screen won't let you start the game without each having a unique number.
anarres Jan 11, 2003, 10:38 AM Matix - I was wrong :(
The numbers in the MP screen don't affect start location.
I wonder what they are there for then? And why does it make them all be unique??
Matrix Jan 11, 2003, 11:12 AM Anarres, I know as much as you do.
Have fun with the two of you. ;) Why don't you simply start a second PBEM with this scenario, asking for more players?
anarres Jan 11, 2003, 11:22 AM We want to be able to play lots of turns, not just one a day i'm afraid.
With 8 players and so spread out you will be lucky to keep even 1 a day, and 2 is impossible...
Edit: I think that number thing is probably meant to work, yet it is just another bug
Unregister Jan 11, 2003, 01:06 PM Pink?!?! :hmm: well i kinda just want to start it so i will play it sometime today and send it off to Civaddict....should i put it here or email it directly to him?
Matrix Jan 11, 2003, 02:48 PM It's still "Play By E-Mail". ;) My email address is matrix@straland.com, by the way...
And anarres, I don't think the speed in which someone can play one's turn matters for the progress of the game. More, or only, one's availability to play when the game arrives.
Kevinicus Jan 11, 2003, 03:04 PM Cyan? What's Cyan? Oh and for diplomatic discussions I am free for talks in ICQ or by email. ICQ = 45959469 :)
Matrix Jan 11, 2003, 03:12 PM Cyan = light blue. :)

Sorry Matrix, I think there has been a misunderstanding. All I was saying was that mel and me can have power sessions where we get to play lots of turns in one night. In fact, I am probably one of the slowest civ players at cfc :)
Melifluous Jan 11, 2003, 03:30 PM Hey Kevinicus...
Get MSM...
My login is my Email...
Melilfuous
Kevinicus Jan 11, 2003, 03:36 PM Where do I get that? I think I had that a long time ago.
Melifluous Jan 11, 2003, 03:40 PM hehe
Here Microsoft Messenger (http://messenger.msn.co.uk/)
Melifluous
Kevinicus Jan 11, 2003, 03:52 PM And what is your email1?!?!!? D:
Melifluous Jan 11, 2003, 03:56 PM tut tut tut lazy man :p
Anyway it is stevebroad2002@hotmail.com
You sent the game to me remember?
Melifluous
Kevinicus Jan 11, 2003, 03:57 PM Oh ya
<_<

Indeed I misunderstood. ;) But then still I don't think we'll have trouble playing one turn a day. I think being spread even makes it easier: you're less restricted to a certain time in the day to play your turn.
Enfin, can't wait to play my first turn! :D 't Was a lot of work making the scenario. ;) (Though I'm thinking about making other ones. A series of Deathmatch scenarios... )
Melifluous Jan 11, 2003, 04:37 PM What can I say?
This one is VERY good...
I advise everyone to have a go at this against the AI...
Should be a 'KILLER' game...
Melifluous
Unregister Jan 11, 2003, 08:05 PM ok the order is going to go like this
1. Unregister GMT-5 (Iriquois)
2. Kevinicus GMT+1 (Arabia)
3. Melifluous GMT (French)
4. WildFire444 GMT-5 (Persians)
5. Matrix GMT+1 (Scandinavia)
6. CivAddict2002 GMT-8 (Germans)
7. DogBoy GMT-8 (Romans)
8. Plexus GMT-8 (Japan)
i will try to start it tomorrow...
Matrix Jan 12, 2003, 03:40 AM Erm, I think it's best if WildFire444 is the one just after of before you, Unregister. This would mean he plays his turn at say 17:00, but after that it's my turn where it's 23:00. And I always go in the assumption that everyone should play his turn in the evening... (That's when everybody's got time.)
anarres Jan 12, 2003, 07:06 AM This is FAST and VIOLENT.
A quick tip: Mobilise straight away and attack!!
Matrix Jan 12, 2003, 07:12 AM So offence instead of defence? :)
Kevinicus Jan 12, 2003, 08:15 AM I am on a bloody island, alone and cut off. Darn darn. I hate that kind of position >:|
anarres Jan 12, 2003, 09:10 AM Originally posted by Matrix
So offence instead of defence? :) hehe. You start with a load of mech infantry. If there is anyone nearby just swith to mobilisation and modern armour. I built 3 manafacturing plants first in my best cities, then MA.
Nice little army after 8 turns :D
The question is, can you get away not doing this if others around you are?
CivAddict2002 Jan 12, 2003, 11:05 AM Unregister, you can e-mail me the game. I haven't gotten it yet. If you sent it to me, send it to me again.
Unregister Jan 12, 2003, 12:01 PM Well...the game is up and running. I have sent it to WF444 and he's most likely sending it right now.
The order is:
Me
WF444
Civaddict
Dogboy
Plexus
Matrix
Kevin
Mel
WildFire Jan 12, 2003, 12:08 PM Eager Civaddict? Sent to you.
Kevinicus Jan 12, 2003, 12:25 PM Do I have a different color now?
Matrix Jan 12, 2003, 01:00 PM Well, you chose to be Arabia and there are no French, so you're light purple.
CivAddict2002 Jan 12, 2003, 01:10 PM I checked the history of these posts and on one of the Unregister asked if he should e-mail me the save or post it here. Didn't know the order had changed. Am I eager? You bet!
Matrix Jan 12, 2003, 01:11 PM Hey, I just figured out where everyone starts. :) (See the first post here.) I think I started quite well, at the corner of the map. (And yes, I honestly randomly selected a player to start the game. :p)
WildFire Jan 12, 2003, 01:15 PM My starting positions SUCKS!
I had starvation my FIRST TURN.
Anyone ready for ICBM war?
:p
DogBoy Jan 12, 2003, 01:41 PM Good news is I got the save from CivAddict and played my turn. Bad news is I don't have Plexus' e-mail so can someone post it here? I don't want to hold this up.
WildFire Jan 12, 2003, 02:12 PM I believe you send it here: enemysoldier88@yahoo.com
Matrix Jan 12, 2003, 03:59 PM Having starvation the first turn is actually quite normal, WildFire444. ;) Almost everyone has that...
Plexus Jan 12, 2003, 07:47 PM I only had it in one city... off to Matrix.
Matrix Jan 13, 2003, 04:27 AM Why is accellerated production and civ-specific abilities turned on?? If I knew about that last one I would've chosen a different Civ! :undecide:
Ah well, I know upgraded my berserks to guerilla's.
Matrix Jan 13, 2003, 04:31 AM Whoops! I don't have Kevinicus' e-mail address. Sent him a PM...
Kevinicus Jan 13, 2003, 06:03 AM BumbleK@web.de but I see you already sent it :D
Also with a nice offer. Where can I meet you for chats and such Matrix? ICQ? MSN? Btw I just sent it to Melif :)
Matrix Jan 13, 2003, 07:25 AM I'm at ICQ: 59830037 and already sent you a message.
Kevinicus Jan 13, 2003, 09:26 AM Hehe.
By the way, I had no starvation ^_^
Matrix Jan 14, 2003, 10:59 AM Why are we all so quiet? Are we up to something? :satan:
Kevinicus Jan 14, 2003, 11:26 AM Nothing you don't know yet. :tank:
;)
Unregister Jan 14, 2003, 02:26 PM Sorry about the Civ special abilities, because believe me, i wouldn't have been Iriquois... I could've swore i turned it off, maybe i did screw up, i just wanted to start it though and it seemed like other people did too.
Matrix Jan 14, 2003, 04:09 PM Yeah well, who'd normally consider turning off Civ-specific abilities? ;)
Unregister Jan 15, 2003, 08:27 PM I accidentally did in my first game every    Until my brothers played i didn't realize it, although i should have, you know, never getting the Hoplite...
Kevinicus Jan 16, 2003, 05:26 AM Doesn't really matter for anyone except the Americans really :)
Matrix Jan 16, 2003, 06:06 AM No? I think military and productive Civs have major advantages! Economical Civs too, but less...
Kevinicus Jan 16, 2003, 06:11 AM I wish I were romans >:0
anarres Jan 16, 2003, 06:14 AM Matrix is right. Military, Industious and Commercial traits are all huge bonuses. Expansionist and Scientific are useless, Religous is inbetween.
Unregister Jan 17, 2003, 01:03 PM i am expansionest and religious :(..... The religious will be nice but the expansionist part sucks.
Kevinicus Jan 17, 2003, 03:00 PM Well thank god you turned it off, I have arabia :|

WildFire Jan 18, 2003, 10:14 PM Since I can agree with Kevinicus, I have one request. Can someone make a very crappy unit so i can get a Golden Age with my Immortal? :p
Seriously though, the Internet will give a GA to whoever gets it right? And who has the game?
Plexus Jan 19, 2003, 01:50 AM Gonna be awfully hard to beat me to the internet... :)
Kevinicus Jan 19, 2003, 02:46 AM ANd it will be awfully hard for me to get the next turn if you know what I mean....
Plexus Jan 19, 2003, 03:23 AM I really don't... ;)
Enlighten me.
DogBoy Jan 19, 2003, 09:24 PM Well, turn one was kinda exciting. Maybe we will play turn 2 sometime?
Matrix Jan 20, 2003, 03:53 AM What a terrifying idea! I'm still catching breath!
Seriously though, it's very disappointing to notice that no PBEM I play reaches one turn a day. :(
C'mon! Play and send!
Melifluous Jan 20, 2003, 04:03 AM OK,
I sent this to Unregister last, so....
If Wildfire still hasn't received this then Unregister has it...
If he doesn't then there was a problem with the mail I sent him and I will resend if he wants me to....
Melifluous
PS. Keeping the dream alive...
Unregister Jan 20, 2003, 09:43 AM Ok, so send it again because i didn't get it. My email is actous22@yahoo.com. I have also been wondering what has taken so long. Just send it to me again at that email.
Melifluous Jan 20, 2003, 09:52 AM OK Sent it...
Sorry everyone...
My fault again :(
Melifluous
Unregister Jan 20, 2003, 10:28 AM Ok i finally got it, i played and sent it to wildfire
WildFire Jan 20, 2003, 02:26 PM Okay, I got the game and went to play it, but the file didnt open :(
And i asked Unregister by pming him, and he said that he already deleted the game. I think that Meli should email it to him again.
Plexus Jan 25, 2003, 01:08 AM Off to Matrix.
Melifluous Jan 31, 2003, 02:43 PM On to unregister...
Hey man...
Saw you earlier on IRC...
Sorry I didnt say much...Working at the time...
Anyway Enjoy
Melifluous
PS. These save games are a bit big huh?
PPS. Maybe we should zip saves?
Matrix Feb 01, 2003, 07:10 AM We could. ;) Is there anyone who can't (un)zip?
DogBoy Feb 01, 2003, 10:14 AM But I haven't had any problems getting any of the saved games that I know of.
Matrix Feb 01, 2003, 02:45 PM That's not the point. It can take a lot of time sending or receiving the savegame.
By the way, I haven't seen the savegame for a long time now.
http://www.straland.com/junk/whereisthesave.gif
WildFire Feb 01, 2003, 03:03 PM I have sent it to CivAddict a couple times. He is saying its the wrong one buyt i just checked and when I loaded it, it was his turn.
DogBoy Feb 01, 2003, 03:19 PM CivAddict sent me the same turn I had last week and I told him. He told me Wildfire sent him the wrong one. He sent me the right one today and I sent it off to Plexus.
Matrix Feb 02, 2003, 05:10 AM Ok, but it appears it's all solved. :) Just sent it to Kevinicus.
Someone just wanted to trade with me, but he asked Incense twice? I want to make a deal with a lot of people: ROP and incense for your luxury. Don't let it take an extra turn. :nono: Take it or leave it. All four of you. ;) (You may remove ROP if you like...)
anarres Feb 02, 2003, 06:11 AM hehe. ROP in a PBEM game...
...should be fun :D
Unregister Feb 03, 2003, 04:50 PM Hope no one minds, but after an embassy i found something quite interesting. You listening Germany?
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/stupid.JPG
CivAddict2002 Feb 03, 2003, 05:01 PM We have a 10 turn non-aggressive pact that I entered with him on the first turn. If I would have payed attention to the map I would have set up a mutual alliance with Japan to attack him quickly.
WildFire Feb 03, 2003, 05:10 PM Well now that was pretty......ahem, not a good idea.
GPS
Sending soon.
DogBoy Feb 03, 2003, 08:50 PM Thanks for posting a picture of my capital Unregister, it saves everybody money from having to investigate it themselves ;) After doing my own investigation, I have noticed a few strange things also :p
Wildfire, don't know who you were telling that was a bad idea to, but it was a good idea on my part. As you have probably seen by now, I'm surrounded by two nations. I had to make peace with one side in order to build up my defenses on the other side.
Game sent to Plexus.
WildFire Feb 03, 2003, 10:11 PM Oh Dogboy. I know you can't tell by the scores right now (somehow I am in second) but once you see my island, you'll see how crappy it really is. Since I played my first turns, one of my cities has starved ever since and is now down to a 6. It has 1 grassland and the rest are hills and mountains. At least its on the coast.
DogBoy Feb 03, 2003, 10:48 PM Wildfire, I don't pay much attention to the scores neither. One of my city started out at size 6 and is now down to size 4. And I bet I have worse land that you :) I have tundra, hills/mountains, and forests still. I was mainly poking good humor at Unregister for showing my capitol  One thing is for certain though, you can see alliances are being formed quickly so I'm sure the scores will fluctuate in the next 10 turns or less.
Melifluous Feb 03, 2003, 10:50 PM I dunno about you Dogboy,
But that seems like a pretty good reason to go to war...
And Unregister,
Please, unless it was intentional, dont post stuff like that on the thread, post it to your 'teammate', funny though it is, we dont really all need to see that...
Melifluous
Matrix Feb 04, 2003, 02:49 AM Isn't it a fault of the scenario? Or have you intentionally moved your units out of your capital?
By the way, all great wonders should've been deleted, including the Internet, but that one was all the way down, under the space ship parts, in the list in the editor. So I forgot.
I wonder whether you're all building units (probably modern armor), or first other buildings like manufacturing plant, civil defence, and small wonders. ;)
I also wonder what Civ started best... I think it's WildFire444. An island is very hard to conquer, though very hard to break out from as well...
(Just sent the game to Kevinicus. :))
Unregister Feb 04, 2003, 08:47 AM Well......i couldn't resist posting the screenshot up there. I couldn't believe that he had no one on the city. But fine, i won't paste the other one i got too ;)
DogBoy Feb 04, 2003, 10:20 AM I sent you a private message.
Unregister Feb 04, 2003, 03:59 PM Ok i got it and you check your pm :)
Unregister Feb 06, 2003, 08:47 AM Hehe.....i've already went from republic-anarchy-communism-anarchy-democracy.
if your wondering i miss clicked :(
Melifluous Feb 06, 2003, 03:13 PM In case anyone has missed it in the F4 screen

But not as you know it...

Kevinicus Feb 07, 2003, 08:17 AM Oh me oh my.
Matrix Feb 07, 2003, 08:41 AM  Heavy!
Hey WildFire444, I think I have better suggestions than a Stock Exchange for Rome.
Matrix Feb 07, 2003, 08:44 AM Oh, by the way, I got the Internet. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/yeah.gif
Plexus Feb 07, 2003, 09:53 AM Crap... I was one turn away...
Kevinicus Feb 07, 2003, 01:51 PM Same here. :(
Unregister Feb 07, 2003, 04:07 PM Wasn't even bothering :) . Anyways....i played it and now WildFire has to but he won't be able to get to it tonight.
CivAddict2002 Feb 09, 2003, 06:16 PM Another player and I have talked over e-mails. I'm not going to post his name in case he wants to remain anonymous. Anyway, this is just my thoughts on this deathmatch game. And no, it isn't a whine, just my observations.
ME: Yup, it's fun alright. Probably be the last time I play a deathmatch game like this, it's all luck and no skill involved.
OTHER GUY: Just because you got nuked ;)
ME: No, not just because I got nuked. That really has nothing to do with it. The problem as I see it is the game is shallow and has no meaning. Yes, every Civ3 game has some luck involved but this deathmatch game is about 95% luck. For example, depending on where you start, if you start next to your friend you can immediatly form a non-aggression pact or alliance and just simply build nukes and nuke others around the world and not worry about building ground forces. I know one can argue that anyone can do that, and that's true to an extent, but you still have to worry about backstabbers. With your friend on your island, you don't have to worry so much about backstabbing. Another example is all the research is done and every unit is available immediately from the start. So you have to decide to either build ground forces for an attack or defense, nukes to nuke the rest of the world, or build SAM batteries and Strategic Missile Defense (SMD) to protect yourself from nukes, but leaves you wide open to a land invasion. If you are unlucky and picked the wrong build, well, game over. If you start on your own island all alone, you don't have to worry about a land attack right away, you can build lots of nukes or SAM batteries and the SMD. Another example is look at the scores for the starting players. That hugh difference between the first place and last place person is based on a lot of factors, mainly luck if you signed up in the correct order and got the better land. It's just luck. It's like playing a regicide game over the net. A lot of people will use their king to scout and pop goody huts, and if their king dies, the game is over. Well so what? They have invested maybe 10 minutes so it's no big deal. They start a new game. And what does the winner get? The satisfaction of winning a game after 10 minutes when all they have done is hit the space bar a few times? This deathmatch game leaves out the most fun (in my opinion) factors of the game: scouting and discovering new land, meeting new civs, trading techs, diplomacy. I wanted to play this game because it looked like fun and I would be able to get into some intense fighting right away. Guess I should have just dusted off the Quake CD. This deathmatch is too much like playing BGH on starcraft. It's shallow and has no meaning. It's not Civ3. No, this isn't a whine because I got nuked. I was already thinking this about 3 turns into the game. If I get nuked again, so what. I've invested maybe 10 minutes in the game? I have probably invested more time typing this than I have actually spent in game. I will continue playing the game just to see what happens, but it's really not enjoyable.
I deleted the rest of our conversation as it had no meaning. But this is how I see deathmatch games. Feel free to flame.
Matrix Feb 10, 2003, 05:56 AM I won't flame. It's indeed a guess what's the best tactic, but you should also reckon it with all the aspects you mentioned. Although no one could've finished the SMD before the first ICBM's are launched.
......
No, it's not that much luck. It's not just thinking about what would be the best tactic to start with. This game is far from over, and I think there'll be a lot of reckoning necessary before the winner is determined.
You know the game Risk? When someone becomes too large, you can be assured he'll get more enemies in the benefit of the smaller newly allies. That way the game will keep in balance, until that balance flips.

When someone becomes too large they just crush the little people one by one. :)
anarres Feb 10, 2003, 08:09 AM Hmm. Well, please don't think of this as a flame, but rather a defending of a rather fine scenario...
This was never going to be a 'normal' civ game, it is what is says, a 'Deathmatch'. As such it is guns blazing from turn 1.
There were/are many options available to everyone:
- Make friends with your immediate neighbour, avoiding a costly initial conflict.
- Kill you immediate neighbour immediately, thereby getting more land
- Make very quick alliances around the world to kill the strongest.
- Pick on the weakest
- Stay out of the fighting if not directly attacked, thereby building an army ready for instnt retaliation
- Betray your alliances to gain quick territory
- Build marines and invade all those undefended costal cities
- blah blah blah....
You have obviously never played Diplomacy or (to a lesser extent) RISK. The idea is to form alliances, they are quickly changing and you must watch your back...
C'mon guys! What did you expect!
I missed getting in to this game as I didn't check the thread in the 24 hours in which it was open. I suggest you offer your place to someone who wants to play, and maybe you will think twice about joining a scenario PBEM in the future...

I don't know. You can't get higher in technology. If all the smaller Civs ally quickly enough, I don't think the bigger will be able to resist.
It more a question of: will the alliance continue till the former big one is completely destroyed, or will the allies see more danger/gain somewhere else?
Anarres sees the fun of this precisely. ;) Perhaps if CivAddict2002 doesn't care, you could take over a completely nuked Civ. :p But the choice is CivAddict2002's.
CivAddict2002 Feb 10, 2003, 12:26 PM Anarres, I didn't take it as a flame, and I'm glad we are not turning this into a flame war. I have played Risk, many many games. I never did play diplomacy though. In Risk, yes there were a few strategies but a lot of it wasn't, especially in 1v1 or 1v1v1 games. You just pile all your units on a few squares and keep attacking until you have conquered as much as you can. Then the next person has fewer armies and can do less. The next turn you have an even larger army, rinse and repeat. And when you turn in Risk cards later in the game for 15 or 20 units...steamroll time. It's even worse when you play the computer version of Risk. That's why I stopped playing Risk and started playing Axis and Allies, and eventually the expansion pack to Axis and Allies called The World at War 1939-1945 by Xeno Games. Those games take a lot of strategy and not so much luck. I just don't find much enjoyment playing games based solely on luck unless I'm playing with my kids, then we play Candyland or Chutes and Ladders.
What did I think I was getting into when I joined this deathmatch game? My answer is I don't know. I guess I was thinking I could actually play a game where I didn't hit space bar everytime I got the save for at least 10 turns, and then not see the game anymore because someone refuses to check their e-mail. I wanted to play Civ3, but this doesn't feel like it.
I'm not trashing the scenario. I now everybody's tastes are different. I was just posting my thoughts on the subject in hopes of maybe making the scenario better. I have talked to someone who is playing another deathmatch game and for some reason they can't build nukes. He said he's going to have to use a different strategy in order to win. I'm not saying no nukes is the way to go, but it might be.
Matrix, I know the game is far from over. The game will probably swing to having many different people on top. If I win this game, I'm not going to go back on my opinion and say this was the best game I have ever played.
Unregister Feb 10, 2003, 01:57 PM I have been playing this scenario with someone else and just to tell everyone, once a lot of nukes and ICBM's get launched (not that i have any ;)) the game will get very.....ummm.....er.......tedious. If a lot of your cities are nuked and you only see the game every other day, you may not see a point at continuing.
Matrix Feb 10, 2003, 04:40 PM Noted, Unregister.
CivAddict2002, I think the biggest difference in opinions is that I think there's less luck involved than you think. But alas.
CivAddict2002, do you want anarres to take over?
Anarres, do you want to take over from CivAddict2002?
CivAddict2002 Feb 10, 2003, 06:31 PM Matrix, I'm going to keep playing. I have a theory I want to test out. You could be right about our opinions. Like I said, this wasn't meant to be a whine, just an observation. My intent was to see if anybody else shared my opinion so we could possibly make the scenario better. But if nobody shares my opinion and everybody thinks the scenario is fine the way it is, then obviously I'm in the minority. I know sometimes when you first start something you don't enjoy it because you see only one solution. But then later you see that there are many different ways and you may start to like it (like getting my kids to eat broccoli). Anyhow, I'm going to keep playing.
anarres Feb 11, 2003, 03:14 AM CivAddict2002, I am glad you are going to carry on. I hope you kick some ass :hammer:
Unregister Feb 11, 2003, 01:25 PM Not about this deathmatch game, but in another one i am playing using the deathmatch scenario two odd things happened.
1) When it started nukes or ICBM's couldn't be built. But the next time it was played (continuing it from the day before) they could be built.
2) I took over a city with two Stealth Bombers in it, and the bombers became mine. I thought airplanes weren't capturable.
Unregister Feb 13, 2003, 01:25 PM Where the heck is this game?
Unregister Feb 13, 2003, 01:25 PM Where the heck is this game?
Matrix Feb 13, 2003, 03:20 PM http://www.straland.com/junk/whereisthesave.gif
Last one I received was of feb. 10 at 9:19 AM GMT+1. (Figure it out.)
Plexus Feb 14, 2003, 04:39 PM Yea, that seems about right... What is the last date evreyone has?
CivAddict2002 Feb 14, 2003, 09:56 PM I haven't seen the save since Feb 8. I sent to DogBoy and he sent me confirmation that he got it, played it, and sent it.
Praetorian Feb 16, 2003, 08:33 AM Is anyone starting a PBEM game (vanilla)? Never played PBEM, I am waiting to have my "virginity taken"

Well, you CAN'T do pbem's with Civ3, only with PTW.

Unregister Feb 19, 2003, 02:32 PM This is getting rediculous, i haven't seen this game in over two weeks. This was actually a good one too.
Unregister Feb 23, 2003, 12:27 PM *BUMP* Anyone know who has it?
WildFire Feb 23, 2003, 01:07 PM DEAD
Matrix Feb 24, 2003, 05:06 AM What was the last date played?
I'll check my last sent savegame as soon as I'm home...
It would be a shame if this one dies.
Unregister Feb 24, 2003, 03:43 PM It would considering its gone the farthest for any game i've done.
Matrix Feb 25, 2003, 05:38 PM I've sent my turn again. :) I know I played it before, but perhaps I forgot to send it. Probably not, but it happened to me before... Let's just play on. Just redo yor turn.
Unregister Mar 02, 2003, 10:39 PM Sorry everyone, but i'm gonna have to drop out of this pbem game, if it ever continues.
It's taking too long to get going so adios.
Matrix Mar 03, 2003, 02:10 PM F*ck!
Ok, story's over!
WildFire Mar 03, 2003, 02:24 PM It might be held up by Dogboy. He is away on business for this week (I think).
DogBoy Mar 05, 2003, 06:34 AM Nope, not with me. I got back in town and there is no deathmatch game in my box. I haven't seen the game in weeks.
Matrix Mar 05, 2003, 09:49 AM Kevinicus?
I resent him the last savegame, but no response.
DogBoy Mar 05, 2003, 09:52 AM It's possible that it is Kevinicus. I know he dropped out of Heihojin Game #3 and I took his place. I don't know if he quit just that game or all games. Maybe the game host of this game could give him a few more days and then retire his civ?
Melifluous Mar 05, 2003, 09:53 AM Yeah I aint heard from Kevinicus in about a month
And I am in a 1v1 with him :(
Not good man...
Lovely map here too... :(
Melifluous
Matrix Mar 05, 2003, 11:12 AM I'm the host. How do I let him retire? It's been quite a few days already...
WildFire Mar 05, 2003, 01:05 PM You just use the Admin password to open his save and than retire.
Matrix Mar 06, 2003, 06:21 AM Oh, so that's what that password is for. :p
But I tried to open it, but that didn't work. But now I remember I'm not the host, but Unregister! I'll send the game to him; than he may retire. After that he should send the game to Melifluous. :)
WildFire Mar 06, 2003, 10:29 AM I am after Unregister arent I? And now that the game has started, he may want to play.
Matrix Mar 06, 2003, 04:46 PM I think you misunderstood...
Unregister is the host. He should load the savegame ment for Kevinicus and retire, so that Kevinicus is out of the game. Then he sends the game to Melifluous, who comes after Kevinicus, and then we can continue, without Kevinicus. :)
Unregister Mar 07, 2003, 10:29 PM That is if Unregister can remember the admins password.....
Matrix Mar 08, 2003, 06:37 AM
anarres Mar 08, 2003, 07:05 AM I believe mel has the ability to hack it if you need him to. :)
Unregister Mar 08, 2003, 08:45 PM Unregister also must know if he can use the 1.21 patch or if he must un-install and use 1.14...
I would MUCH rather use 1.21, but......
Matrix Mar 09, 2003, 03:19 AM ...I'm Dutch. So I can't install 1.21 yet.
Let's ask Mel to hack it. :D It's his turn afterwards anyway... ;)
Matrix Mar 09, 2003, 03:22 AM Ok, I sent the game to Mel and told him the situation. :)
Melifluous Mar 09, 2003, 06:20 PM Got the game,
Retired Kevinicus...
Sent to Unregister.
Lets Play
Melifluous
Matrix Mar 11, 2003, 06:09 PM Yahoo!!! I played the game again! It's alive again! http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/banana.gif
The situation is a bit changed now.
anarres Mar 11, 2003, 06:23 PM Are there any updates for the lurkers?
Maybe a minimap and a quick list of who is/isn't at war. :)
WildFire Mar 11, 2003, 06:32 PM How bout this little update. Arabia is gone!
And I think the only war is Meli vs Civaddict and Dogboy since he nuked them. And since I thought that lurkers had left this game, I have taken screen shots but their none of your business right now :p
Matrix Mar 15, 2003, 09:28 AM http://www.straland.com/junk/whereisthesave.gif
I wanna play again! http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/yeah.gif http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/yeah.gif
Plexus Mar 15, 2003, 10:50 PM I second that...
Melifluous Mar 16, 2003, 02:59 AM Last I saw it was I sent Sep to Unregister.

Melifluous
Matrix Mar 16, 2003, 04:36 AM Last one I got was of August...
WildFire Mar 16, 2003, 12:32 PM Sorry!
Just sent to Civaddict2002.
Matrix Mar 20, 2003, 12:36 PM Where is the save now? Haven't seen it for quite some time...
DogBoy Mar 30, 2003, 12:35 PM Well, we managed to kick and scream and scratch and claw and we thought we figured out who was holding up the game. So we retired his civ and played ONE turn. Where is the save now?
Kevinicus Mar 30, 2003, 01:14 PM Narf, I am back and you retired me, serves me right. Silly computer ^-^
But I would've thought you would've been like...done by now. :P
Civaddict must have it now men. :D
CivAddict2002 Mar 30, 2003, 01:24 PM I don't have it. Even though I keeping getting nuked I keep playing and passing it along. I figured the game was just dead again.
WildFire Mar 30, 2003, 01:28 PM Don't have it.
Matrix Mar 30, 2003, 04:24 PM Me neither.
