View Full Version : More Wonders
Pouakai Mar 27, 2011, 11:53 AM More Wonders
"We built wonderous monuments honouring the gods, which reached up to touch the very fabric of the heavens!"
Following in the footsteps of the original greats of civ 5 wonder designing - Ambrox62 and asioasioasio, I have begun to create my own wonders. The aim is to provide modular extensions to the game's original wonder department, and adds unique and wondrous sites around the world to the game. Many of the wonders have been suggested by the community, so feel free to post ideas!
All wonders contain unique effects and art. The splash screens are done by myself, and the icons are done by the king of icons and a fellow wonder engineer, sukritact. Be sure to check out his awesome wonders in the same forum here.

The Golden Pavilion
Located in Kyoto, Japan, the Golden Pavilion is a buddhist temple situated in tranquil surrounds. The exterior walls are entirely coated in Gold leaf, which gives it's Japanese name, Kinkaku-ji, Kin meaning gold and ji temple. It is not known when the temple was coated, however it started life as a private residence for a Daimyo (Japanese Warlord) during the Sengoku Jidai period of Civil War. Ingame, the Golden Pavilion provides 1 :c5gold: Gold for every two :c5citizen: Citizens. It can be downloaded either via the Ingame ModBrowser, or via the CivFanatics download database, found Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=16839).

The wonders will be included in this post, and will no longer recieve updates or support. They will not be uploaded to Steam Workshop, so this will be the only place they will be able to be accessed. Great Mosque of Djenne
Located in the heart of the legendary Malinese city of Djenne, the Great Mosque is a feat of engineering, and the largest Mud Brick building on Earth. The exact building date has been lost in the mists of time, however modern estimates put it at sometime in the 13th century. The modern structure was built under the order of French Colonialists in the early years of the 20th century. Ingame, the Great Mosque of Djenne provides +3 :c5production: Production and +4 :c5gold: Gold on every Flood plain, and +10 :c5culture: Culture from every Incense worked by the city. The Great Mosque of Djenne can be download from either the ingame ModBrowser, or through the CivFanatics Download Database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=18583)

I_qua_I Mar 27, 2011, 07:51 PM Love it. The 3 culture is really odd though - having it be 1 would have made it much more in line with the rest of the game (and there's also already a good number of wonders around the same area in the tech tree that give a lot of culture) The GP points also seem a bit much. Just out of curiosity, what's the rationale for giving 2 great artists instead of one or two great merchants? It's a little off-putting, for example, for someone focusing on economy/gold (probably the people who will be aiming for banking in the first place) as it will detract from great merchant production. (There's also already a good number (too many?) of great artist-producing wonders around the same area in the tech tree including the Forbidden Palace which unlocks with the same tech.) The splash is really beautiful though, really nice choice and to be honest the whole thing seems like it could/should have been included in the main game. It's probably going to be one of the ones I always have checked in the mod browser. Thanks!
Pouakai Mar 27, 2011, 09:00 PM Thanks I_qua_I
Regarding your comments:
- The Golden Pavilion has inspired several works of art and literature in history, as well as being inspiring in itself and having a rich history. As such, I wanted to give it more than usual culture.
- The multiple Great Artist points was really just to make it unique. I wanted it to give 1 Great artist point and 1 Great Merchant point, but wasn't sure if that was possible. If someone can enlighten me that would be much appreciated
- Thanks about the splash! I found a nice picture and modified it!
I_qua_I Mar 27, 2011, 10:37 PM Fair enough though I'm still not sure that we need the 3:c5culture:. Virtually all of the wonders in the game have served as inspiration for art/literature/the further cultural development of their respective civilizations and the world, has a rich history, etc. Giving wonders more culture than the standard 1:c5culture: shouldn't be used as a way of emphasizing this trait for any specific one (as they all have it, else they would hardly be "wonders") but should rather aim at serving some type of game mechanic. Himeji and The Kremlin got more than the standard 1:c5culture: because they really compliment a small empire/cultural victory playstyle. Stonehenge gets it because it, again, functions as a strategic build option for cultural victory playstyles (or for keeping up with social policies for larger empires, etc.) It's not that I'm questioning whether this wonder deserves the 3:c5culture: but whether it needs it.
And I guess the same sort of reply applies to the great people comment as well. It's a very nice wonder as is and doesn't really need to be made more special by throwing in extra great person points. Aesthetically, the wonder would be more appealling if consistency with the overall framework of the game were emphasized and it's not just viewed as a standalone build.
Still, I really do like it a lot. It's simple, compliments the commerce policy tree, echoes monarchy, and (again:)) the splash is awesome.
Pouakai Mar 27, 2011, 10:46 PM So would you rather one Great Merchant point and 1 cuture?
I_qua_I Mar 27, 2011, 11:07 PM I think the 1 :c5culture: would be more appropriate though I would only take away a great person if you leave it as an artist. I think 2 great merchants would be best though. This could make it an economic victory staple without being too overpowered.
Pouakai Mar 27, 2011, 11:10 PM OK. I'll update it soon.
Pouakai Mar 27, 2011, 11:22 PM v2 is UP on the Mod browser! Changed is the Great person points (Now 2 Great Merchant points), nerfed to 1 :c5culture: and the flavours have been changed to being more Gold-orientated.
I_qua_I Mar 27, 2011, 11:31 PM Awesome, can't wait to play with it. I'm really curious to know what other people think of it too (mostly because I'm now questioning whether 1:c5gold: per 1:c5citizen: would be too overpowered or doable. (I'd take away 1 great merchant point if this were the effect though.)) I think it would be too overpowered but was wondering what others had to say.
ambrox62 Mar 28, 2011, 12:16 AM I'm glad to see your pavilion running fine :goodjob:
Because it's the first of your next wonders, put a list of the upcoming buildings you will work on in the first post, just avoiding duplicated items among other modders ;)
Pouakai Mar 28, 2011, 11:44 AM Good idea, post 1 updated
Pouakai Mar 28, 2011, 09:18 PM Cyon has completed art for Teotihuacan, and if I may say so, it looks incredible! Expect that wonder very soon
Eduardo Dacal Mar 29, 2011, 12:01 PM I like your job.
WW are the thing I like the most in Civs games.
I'll wait for the others.
Just a question: Do you plan to work on new techs and buildings? They look to be simple to add on the game. Do you agree?
Pouakai Mar 29, 2011, 12:41 PM Thanks Eduardo,
I was orignially going to build a Tourism mod, however didn't have time and I like wonders, so decided to start there. In the future I may build a tourism mod, but for the moment I'm doing this.
UPDATE: Teotihuacan is ingame - Sort of. The splash doesn't work due to file size and the icons are bigger than usual. If anyone has time to have a look, please let me know.

Which tool you use to view/edit/convert images?
Pouakai Mar 29, 2011, 08:20 PM I use Gimp with a .dds plugin.
skodkim Mar 31, 2011, 01:11 PM So does this work now?
I know there was some problem with the Golden Pavilion not showing up ingame and v3 in the mod browser sais that its only a test version.

Pouakai Mar 31, 2011, 09:33 PM That is the old version, search for 'Golden Pavilion Wonder' - it works ingame
Pouakai Apr 02, 2011, 12:01 PM Teotihuacan
Built across three centuries, one BCE and until 200 CE, Teotihuacan was the center of a large Mesoamerican empire of the same name, reaching the height of power in the middle of the first millenium. At this peak, thousands of people would have lived in the city, including priests, rulers and traders. The original name is not known, and the name Teotihuacan was given by Aztec residents who found the ruins. In modern times, the name has come to represent three monuments often attributed to the Aztecs - The Pyramid of the Sun, The Pyramid of the Moon and The Avenue of the Dead. Teotihuacan culture has had a profound impact on all whom have seen it, and is heavily incorportated into those of Mayan and Aztec civilizations that would follow. Ingame, Teotihuacan provides 5 :c5happy: Happiness, and provides +3 :c5culture: and +1 :c5production: for every source of http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/war_academy/civ5/bonus/icons/marble.png Marble and http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/war_academy/civ5/bonus/icons/stone.png Stone worked by the city. It can be downloaded either via Steam Workshop or through the CivFanatics download database, found Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=16872). A special mention as well for Cyon, who contributed the art for this wonder. He has also made a brilliant Kongo civilization mod, be sure to check it out!

Zyxpsilon Apr 02, 2011, 07:56 PM Welcome to LeoPaRd integration too!
I suspect many "Re_Balancers" will need to take a good look at your excellent processing (going from photographic assets with key filtering scripts in Gimp really does match the Vanilla versions artistic principles) of images - as much as what Ambrox62 did with his. ;)
I'm hesitant into placing both of your work into the Flavor section since these alter gameplay and are distributed by other Mods.
Now, can you_s (:)) make me the CN-Tower & Channel Tunnel as exposed in this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=407925) or any others (although some are already used for Nationals) - please?
Pouakai Apr 03, 2011, 11:40 AM Channel Tunnel could be a bit difficult as IMO the prereq. environment would be an one tile stright between two landmasses, and not only is that barely ever found but it would be nigh-on impossible to code. But I'll do the CN Tower
Zyxpsilon Apr 03, 2011, 11:56 AM Where have you read that the Channel Tunnel Wonder i suggested requires two coastal areas being a tile of Ocean away from each other?
Pouakai Apr 03, 2011, 12:06 PM Well, it's an undersea channel tunnel. I wouldn't want it to be on the shore of an ocean,
Mentos Apr 03, 2011, 07:44 PM Oh yes, the channel tunnel. That could be created complicatedly like a twin national wonder where you need to build tunnel exit A as requirement before exit B. B gives then a global trade route modifier of +5% or something.
Okay, was only a weird idea I just had. ;)
Zyxpsilon Apr 04, 2011, 01:02 PM Well, it's an undersea channel tunnel. I wouldn't want it to be on the shore of an ocean,
Oh com'on, Pouakai - you're somehow exaggerating with realism! :D
How come Cristo Redentor doesn't require to be built on hills with sheeps?
Or Eiffel Tower without Iron?
Pyramids with at least one desert tile nearby?
Plenty more, and you know it - i'm sure.
Garett20 Apr 04, 2011, 01:33 PM Go CN Tower!!
Mentos Apr 04, 2011, 08:30 PM Have you noticed that the icon of the Teotihuacan Wonder in the tech tree is larger than the others?
Pouakai Apr 04, 2011, 10:33 PM Yeah, I have. I think I've used the wrong picture from Cyon, I'll release an updated version in the weekend (Loads of schoolwork)
Mentos Apr 04, 2011, 11:36 PM If you got the time, consider creating a list with download links of all your creations in post#1. Everyone will find your goodies faster then.
Thanks for the wonders so far and keep more coming, mate!
Pouakai Apr 05, 2011, 12:54 AM Thanks! If you have any ideas for wonders I'll take a look!
zappenduster Apr 06, 2011, 09:57 AM The Konark Sun Temple (http://www.myads.org/holy_places/temple004.shtml) would be nice. :) I suggest some Great Artist and Golden Age / happiness boost but hey... you have the brush, you make the rules! :D
Pouakai Apr 07, 2011, 11:56 AM Oh com'on, Pouakai - you're somehow exaggerating with realism! :D
How come Cristo Redentor doesn't require to be built on hills with sheeps?

Haha. So what would you reccomend?
I've added several new wonders to the OP list.
Eduardo Dacal Apr 10, 2011, 10:00 AM Hey Mr. Pouakai,
I have taken a look in yours Teotihuacan infos in Civiliopedia and there is a mistake.
It's Aztec, not Mayan as you mentioned.
Pouakai Apr 10, 2011, 11:56 AM As I am aware, it's not Aztec - The Aztecs were around from the 14th century onwards. Teotihuacan had died out by the 9th century. Teotihuacan had an almost 'El Dorado' mythical city status amongst the Aztec.
Eduardo Dacal Apr 13, 2011, 10:20 AM As I am aware, it's not Aztec - The Aztecs were around from the 14th century onwards. Teotihuacan had died out by the 9th century. Teotihuacan had an almost 'El Dorado' mythical city status amongst the Aztec.
That's right, but Teotihuacan was problably Toltec, not Mayan.
Anyway, good job.
I'm waiting the next one.
Pouakai Apr 13, 2011, 11:56 AM True, I'll change that when there is the need for a v2
I'm having a few problems getting in contact with the people who do the icons, so I'll have a try, but I have quite a bit of homework and I'm on holiday from this weekend.
Pouakai May 02, 2011, 11:33 AM OK guys, I have the Temple of Heaven ingame, but I must have a line of code wrong somewhere because it isn't recognising the TXT_KEY file. Hope to get this finished and out within the week (Hindered by school starting again and Vikings)
Pouakai May 05, 2011, 11:51 PM Temple of Heaven
The Temple of Heaven is a large religious complex in the centre of Beijing, China. It was constructed in the 15th century during the reign of the Yongle Emperor, and features elements of Taoism and Heaven worship, among which was an annual festival dedicated to heaven. The complex was occupied by the eight-nation alliance during the Boxer rebellion in 1900, and was not opened to the public until 1918. Ingame, the Temple of Heaven provides a Free Social Policy, as well as +2 :c5faith: Faith. Pouakai May 13, 2011, 10:12 PM Oriental Pearl Tower
The Oriental Pearl Tower is a television tower located in Shanghai, China, on the bank of the Huangpu River. It has become an icon of Shanghai and China alike, and is comprised of 11 spheres, two of which have amenities such as observation floors and a rotating restaurant. Construction began in 1990, and took four years to complete. On the seventh of July, 2007 the tower served as the Chinese location for Live Earth, a worldwide Music concert. Ingame, the Oriental Pearl Tower provides +10% Culture and Great Person generation in all cities, and becomes available with Telecommunications. ambrox62 May 14, 2011, 01:07 AM Wow!!! OPT icon looks great !!! :goodjob:
ToH icon seems a bit larger than usual, instead. Is it intentional?
Pouakai May 14, 2011, 01:22 AM It's probably because the ToH icon was done by one of my friends who has never seen the game other than what I showed him so he got the basic idea of what the icons look like.
OPT icon done courtesy of Sukritact, as well as most future icons!
Pouakai May 19, 2011, 11:49 PM Right guys, here's the deal. I'll release the Alhambra as a wonder this weekend, but I'll also release Broadway if I get 3 comments on what people think of my recent wonders, particularily the splash screens, as I can't improve them without your help! I'll also be releasing a v2 of Teotihuacan, fixing several issues
ambrox62 May 20, 2011, 01:23 AM particularily the splash screens, as I can't improve them without your help
As I wrote elsewhere in the past, just a tip from my experience.
When you work on a splash screen pay attention that the lower quarter will be covered by the dark text area. Thus the main scene must stay in the upper 3/4 of the image.
In OPT case, for example, the lower half of the buildings is not visible.
When you set a pic in the usual 972x568 width for splash screen, I suggest to (temporarily) cut/hidden the lower 116 pixels to see how it looks. Thereafter you start to work on it. Otherwise, you need to add about 100 pixels in some manner at the bottom. Look at my Sphinx, Petra and Sankore splashes to better understand what I'm saying.
Mentos May 20, 2011, 01:39 AM I haven’t done any splash screens so far. But after creating two unit portraits/icons in all the many sizes needed for the game, I can only say that creating such is terrible much work. My appreciating for such work has been vastly increased.
I hadn’t found an easy way to do this lens shadow on the left frame, so I just ditched it. Painting and correcting the edges of the 3d effect in the alpha-channel for every icon size is already enough work.
sukritact May 21, 2011, 02:42 AM I haven't too much experience on making splash screens yet, but i'd recommend looking for paintings to use for splash screens, they usually end up looking more painterly. But so far your splash screens have been great. (especially the one for the temple of heaven)
Mentos May 21, 2011, 06:43 AM Maestro Pouakai, if you are ever not so sure about a proper picture as model, I can help looking for some.
972x568 is the size? Just say the wonder-keyword! :)
Pouakai May 21, 2011, 12:17 PM Thanks mates. I personally don't like using proper images as splash screens, as I know other wonder makers do, but I prefer taking an image and using the 'Oilpainting' feature I have on Photoshop to make it look like the current ones.
Yep, 972 x 568 is the size.
Pouakai May 21, 2011, 03:17 PM Broadway
Broadway is a term which has become synonomous with theatre and the preforming arts, and rightly so. Broadway itself is a road in New York City, on which approximately fourty theatres operate, each capable of seating over 500 patrons. These theatres are world renowned for their performances, and have made Broadway into the pinnacle of the theatre industry and an icon of New York City. Ingame, Broadway provides +10 :c5culture: Culture, as well as +3 :c5culture: for every Theatre in the empire, and becomes available with Radio. Broadway can be downloaded from Steam Workshop, or the CivFanatics Download Database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17076).

yahzuk May 21, 2011, 03:23 PM Really been enjoying the wonders you and Ambrox have been putting out!
sukritact May 21, 2011, 07:57 PM wow, plus 20 culture. I'll have to get broadway if i'm ever competing anyone for a cultural victory!
Mentos May 22, 2011, 01:10 AM Both wonders have very nice art. It's hardly noticeable that both splashes were photos once, especially the Broadway one. The icons are well done too.
Broadway with 4 Artist Points and +20 Culture is a bit much. I'd keep the 4 Artist Points but lower Culture to 12.

I disagree, my Potala Palace gives 14 culture (although it has to be built next to a mountain) and don't forget that this wonder appears very late in game. It should be alright.
ambrox62 May 22, 2011, 03:34 AM Broadway arts are really cool :goodjob:
Photoshop "oilpainting" feature is far superior than the Gimp one
Alhambra splash is good but, imo, artificial lights don't recreate a 1300 AD environment. I think that historical feeling is the most important factor when choosing a splash; however you take it as a personal opinion and no more than this. ;)

I wanted a nice dawn picture of the whole Alhambra but I couldn't find one big enough, if you can I'd gladly modify it
Mentos May 22, 2011, 04:44 PM I like this Alhambra painting here:
http://faculty.colostate-pueblo.edu/beatrice.spade/islam/alhambra.jpg
The colors look better with autotone correction in PS.
Pouakai May 22, 2011, 10:06 PM Nice, but not big enough. Needs to be at least 972 x 568 in order for a nice, sharp image to work of. I might try though, it's close enough
Mentos May 23, 2011, 02:39 AM Cmon, since when are pictures in the proper size? 886x541 is large enough for a good resize. No painting looks really sharp. Nothing is perfect and you'll see that the splash only once for a short moment during a game session anyway.
Here in proper size with autotone correction. I'm no artist. Maybe there can be more done by filters.
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/9955/alhambran.png
It's okay, I can live with your version too. Those lights could still come from bonfires. :D
sukritact May 23, 2011, 03:58 AM And here it is with a oil paint filter!

Wonder if they're roasting s'mores....
Mentos May 23, 2011, 06:10 AM Well done, sukri! :goodjob:
I've fiddled with some filters around myself but I don't know my way around in PS like you. :)
ambrox62 May 23, 2011, 07:16 AM The pic I provided was a true oil painting:

Great Job Sukri! I'll release that as a v2 soon!
Kasdar May 24, 2011, 08:43 PM is there a way to get them as a pack?
Pouakai May 24, 2011, 09:35 PM I will probably release them as a pack when I'm finished, but until then, they are all available by searching for 'Pouakai' in the Ingame mod browser
Moriboe May 26, 2011, 11:54 AM Great work! Especially Broadway is just too mighty tempting to resist :)
sukritact May 26, 2011, 05:21 PM Great work! Especially Broadway is just too mighty tempting to resist :)
I hoped you liked the icon! Took me forever to find a photo for the base.
Pouakai May 27, 2011, 04:27 PM I've released a v2 of the Alhambra to the mod browser, adding the new splash screen and the requirement of city must be built on a hill.
Pouakai May 27, 2011, 05:56 PM OK guys, I need your help. Which of the below splash images do you like?
sukritact May 27, 2011, 07:44 PM I prefer the first one. Feels more majestic.
Pouakai May 28, 2011, 12:50 AM Malwiya Minaret
The Malwiya Minaret (Also known as the Spiral Minaret or the Minaret of Samarra) is a large Minaret in Samarra, Iraq. It was constructed in the ninth century CE during the reign of the Abbasid Caliphate, and the mosque complex to which it belongs is one of the largest in the world. It is world renowned for it's unique spiral design. Ingame, the Malwiya Minaret makes Culture and Gold purchasing of tiles 10% cheaper, and requires the wheel. The Malwiya Minaret can be downloaded from Steam Workshop, or the CivFanatics Download Database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17100)

Ogenvi May 28, 2011, 05:17 AM I propose the Space Needle. I suggest 1 food for each two citizens in this city, and 1 gold for each citizen.
Great people points: 2 or 3 Engineer.
Michael Vick May 30, 2011, 02:45 PM Along with your Aztec -> Toltec edit for Teotihuacan, you might want also want to take a look at the "Alhambra" entry. It is located in "Granada", not "Grenada". There is no English-Spanish language difference, "Grenada" is just the name of the Caribbean island. :D
"in Granada, Southern Spain" sounds a bit awkward considering "Southern Spain" isn't really a definite place. "in Granada, Spain", "in Granada, Andalusia", or (my personal recommendation) "in Granada in Southern Spain" would all sound better to an extent.
I would also consider changing the name of the wonder to "The Alhambra" instead of just "Alhambra". In fact, I suggest the same for the Golden Pavilion and the Malwiya Minaret. Their names look out of place in the Civilopedia since wonders like the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre also have the "the".
I'm from Seville so highly support your idea to add La Torre del Oro!!! I'll be following this development closely.:goodjob: May I suggest +40 or 50% income from overseas trade routes?? :)
Pouakai May 30, 2011, 10:15 PM Hey, thanks for your feedback.
The main reason I didn't add 'The' to the Alhambra and the Golden Pavilion / Malwiya Minaret, is mainly because I thought there were to many wonders beginning with 'the' ingame, and you can really add the to anything.
eg.
The Brandenburg gate
The Haiga Sofia
so I mean, IMHO they work fine either way.
When I release the v2 of Teotihuacan, I'll also fix the icon's hugeness.
And I'll make the fixes for v3 of Alhambra (except for the aforementioned the issue)
I was originally planning to make it overseas trade routes, but I can't seem to find the XML that defines them as overseas trade routes, so without lua I doubt it's possible. But other than that the effect will be a percentage boost to trade.
Mentos Jun 04, 2011, 11:29 AM Maestro, two wonder issues:
Temple of Heaven has a double OnModActivated entry of the text file in your Actions mod settings:
<UpdateDatabase>XML/Text/Temple_of_Heaven_text_en_US.xml</UpdateDatabase>
<UpdateDatabase>XML/Text/Temple_of_Heaven_text_en_US.xml</UpdateDatabase>

Pouakai Jun 04, 2011, 11:32 AM Maestro, two wonder issues:
Temple of Heaven has a double OnModActivated entry of the text file in your Actions mod settings:
<UpdateDatabase>XML/Text/Temple_of_Heaven_text_en_US.xml</UpdateDatabase>
<UpdateDatabase>XML/Text/Temple_of_Heaven_text_en_US.xml</UpdateDatabase>

I'm aware there is a double entry in the Temple of Heaven, the one I had first wasn't working, and I couldn't see why, so I added another one and just kept the first one.
I'll fix the Alhambra when I release my next wonder (Very, very soon!)
Mentos Jun 04, 2011, 12:16 PM I deleted one row in the modinfo file and the text worked. However, there is typo in the folder name "Civilizaions" which the Action list properly lists with
<UpdateDatabase>XML/Civilizations/Temple_of_Heaven_Civilizations.xml</UpdateDatabase>
The bug could make the City States building the wonder. No idea if Barbarians can actually build buildings too.
Maybe that makes the text file not correctly load afterwards sometimes, although it did after my single test here. I haven't noticed anything else.
Maybe everything works all the time by fixing this folder typo.
Pouakai Jun 04, 2011, 12:17 PM That happened to me in one of the games, but I couldn't find the reason! Thanks mate!
Pouakai Jun 04, 2011, 02:26 PM Wartburg
The German castle of Wartburg is one which is representative of the castles which dot the central German countryside. It was built from 1068 onwards in a feudal fiefdom, and served as the residence for Martin Luther following his excommunication from the Catholic faith. Ingame, Warburg provides a free Social Policy, and +4 :c5happy: Happiness. Wartburg can be downloaded in Steam Workshop, or through the CivFanatics download database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17128)

Mentos Jun 04, 2011, 03:08 PM Argh, sorry I kept you waiting. I was still looking for pictures because I know you don't like paintings. :D
Well, I had gathered some but nothing is really perfect. Most I googled are close-up photos or far away and too small.
I especially liked the first winter one i've picked if those stupid condensation trails wouldn't be there...too much work for me to remove manually.
Link (http://imageshack.us/g/819/wartburg1.png/)
About the effect:
I'd keep it more in line with the Oracle and Sydney Opera House. I'm a bit more familiar with wonders now unlike before when I suggested that.
1 Culture
2 Great Artist Points
Free Policy
The requirement of Hill is maybe a bit too restricting compared to Oracle and Opera House. The castle itself is on a hill but not the town/city below. It's similiar with Himeji Castle maybe which doesn't require a hill either.
Oh well, I guess it's still fair with hill if you keep the happiness bonus.
The icon is great. Only the sky of the painting looks a bit crispy.
Anyway, thanks! :goodjob:
Pouakai Jun 04, 2011, 04:26 PM I made it require a hill because I have another wonder in the same line which also adds a social policy (Temple of Heaven) and so to have two with pretty much the same effect would mean they might as well be the same thing. So I'll update the culture and GPP, as well as the civilopedia, as per my proofreader! And I'll try doing splashes for some of those, see if I like them. TBPH, I didn't like that splash myself. I had another in mind from the same perspective as those which you mentioned, but I thought the one you suggested would look better, but the sky sort of went a bit blergh. I was hoping for a similar sky to the Malwiya Minaret wonder.
Moriboe Jun 05, 2011, 02:08 AM Wow, very strong wonder, considering Notre Dame provides just 5 happiness as only effect! Also it's in the same tech path as the Sistine Chapel, making it an obvious pick when going for culture. How about putting it at physics or machinery maybe? It's a stretch as there are no mentions of treadwheel cranes at that time, but it would provide an interesting gameplay choice!
But in any case, looking good :goodjob: And again a stunning icon sukritact!
Mentos Jun 05, 2011, 03:52 AM I don't know why this painting looks so cripsy in game. You shouldn't add an oil-filter to an oil-painting.
I think it offers the best perspective and distance, and most importantly is from an old time unlike all those photos with renovated fronts.
Here's my version with only autotone correction:
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/5341/wartburgaussuedwest.png
The artist of that painting is long dead, so no worries about copyright.
Better take this before you do unnecessary much work, mate! Do it for me, please! :D
Pouakai Jun 05, 2011, 12:40 PM @Moriboe: It just seems strange having a castle but not having the ability to build regular castles.
@Mentos: I didn't realise it was an oil painting Haha. I might try my hand at some of the photos you had earlier, as we have a long weekend here, so I have the time
sukritact Jun 05, 2011, 04:56 PM @Moriboe: It just seems strange having a castle but not having the ability to build regular castles.
You get the same dilemma with the lighthouse and the great lighthouse though.
Pouakai Jun 05, 2011, 06:33 PM Aah, touché. However, not the case if you are playing with Ambrox62's the seven ancient wonders mod.
sukritact Jun 06, 2011, 05:52 AM http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3625/5803629929_bba5c5dea2_b.jpg
If you're using photoshop I suggest you try pixelbender, it gives a nice oil painting effect when you set it right.
Mentos Jun 06, 2011, 09:53 AM Looks great!
Lighthouses:
There are hardly records of lighthouses of the early eras telling when those actually appeared. It's very likely that the Lighthouse of Alexandria is the prototype and model of all later ones, like the Tower of Hercules, so it's still plausible if the wonder may appear earlier than all the ordinary ones later.
Inventions weren't copied so quickly in the past like today. "Egyptian? Never heard of those barbarians."
Not sure, but the Egyptian had maybe only one, two large harbors, so they didn't really need to build more than this wondrous one which still stood until 1323. Quite remarkable among all ancient wonders!
Moriboe Jun 06, 2011, 01:19 PM It just seems strange having a castle but not having the ability to build regular castles. At least you would know how to build walls and fortresses, which is not the case for regular castles :D
edit: of course you do; walls are a prerequisite building *facepalm*
I like Mentos' splash version better. I prefer the more grainy look of the forest over the smoothness of the pixelbender result.
Pouakai Jun 10, 2011, 06:57 PM Torre Del Oro
Torre Del Oro (Tower of Gold) is a large watchtower on the Guadalquivir River in Seville, Spain. It was constructed during the Almohad Caliphate to control access to the city. Despite the original purpose, the tower has since been used as a prison and as a treasury for Gold returning from the New World. Ingame, Torre Del Oro provides +20% Gold from Trade routes, +5 Gold, a free harbor in the city, and a free Great Merchant. It becomes available with Navigation. Torre Del Oro can be downloaded from Steam Workshop, or from the CivFanatics Download Database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17151)

No river requirement?
"The Torre del Oro (Spanish: "Gold Tower") is a dodecagonal military watchtower in Seville, southern Spain, built by the Berbers during the Almohad dynasty in order to control access to Seville via the Guadalquivir river."
I see your list never gets shorter. I hope you don't forget your updates. What was it? Teotihuacan, Alhambra, Temple of Heaven?
Pouakai Jun 10, 2011, 08:49 PM I see your list never gets shorter. I hope you don't forget your updates. What was it? Teotihuacan, Alhambra, Temple of Heaven?
As well as Warburg, and apparently now Torre Del Oro.
But I'm planning something special for my birthday, next Saturday
Mentos Jun 10, 2011, 08:56 PM Ah, someone gets older! :p
Oh, I see you actually included Coast (water) requirement in the stats and text. Your screenshot is just not up to date.
Dunno, you could give it River and Coast requirement. All rivers normally end at coast anyway (and are prefered settlement points), so no real further penalty.
Pouakai Jun 10, 2011, 09:02 PM Yeah, I actually had the coast requirement from the beginning, and I only noticed I hadn't updated the text when I was taking the shots, and I couldn't be bothered taking more
Moriboe Jun 12, 2011, 03:44 AM I dunno about a river requirement. I scratched it from my Belem Tower for the last version to increase its use. Coast + river + high production is not to be underestimated.
Of course it's different for a world wonder, but I tend to only make requirements hard for what I call "flavor" wonders, something you want the player to be able to go for less than half of the time.
Art is great again, the purple icon looks flashy :goodjob:
Pouakai Jun 17, 2011, 02:30 AM Tomorrow's the day... check out my avatar for a preview!

I'm almost finished my presents to all of you!

Pouakai Jun 17, 2011, 08:37 PM Taipei 101
Taipei 101 is a skyscraper located in the Taiwanese city of Taipei. It was completed in 2004, and was the tallest building in the world until the completion of the Burj Khalifa in 2010. The architecture of the building, despite being modern, features many traditional asian motifs and symbolism, among which the segments of eight floors through the height of the tower, with eight being a prosperous number in Taiwan. Ingame, Taipei 101 provides +10 Gold, and +1 Gold per citizen of the city. It can be downloaded from Steam Workshop, or via the CivFanatics download Database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17215).

The Grand Canal
The Grand Canal is the main arterial route of the Italian city of Venice. It is lined by the history of the city, with buildings and architecture from most time periods of Venice. During the years of the republic, gold-laden merchant ships would sail up the Grand Canal, depositing their gold in the Doge's treasury, situated on the Grand Canal. Ingame, the Grand Canal provides +5% Gold from Trade Routes, +2 Production and +3 Gold from coastal tiles. The Grand Canal requires Compass and Currency. The mod can be downloaded from Steam Workshop, or the CivFanatics Download Database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17216).

killmeplease Jun 17, 2011, 10:57 PM how about ancient ones
Çatalhöyük (reqs agriculture; faster population growth, +5:c5strength: to city defence)
Cretan labyrinth (mining?, coastal hill; +10 :c5strength: to city defence, +15%:c5strength: to ships)
Tower ob Babel (pottery, construction; +2:c5culture: per :c5trade: trade route)
Palace of Nineveh (trapping, construction; +4 :c5culture:, +20%:c5production: when building land units or better +20 experience)
Pouakai Jun 17, 2011, 11:13 PM Tower of Babel is allready a wonder by Ambrox62. I may consider the others though
Moriboe Jun 18, 2011, 02:21 AM :xmassign:
I mean
:bday:
Wonders looking great!
Both are very strong. For Taipei 101 it should be because it comes late. Maybe the 5% on trade routes for Grand Canal is not needed? At the time it can be built this will not amount to much, it looks largely symbolic. Also so many other wonders have this effect by now.
Pouakai Jun 18, 2011, 02:29 AM It is mostly symbolic, and with a wonder so oriented around trade I couldn't bear not to have a modifier, so I made it small. But for larger empires that can ammount to a bit by late game
Malvi Jun 18, 2011, 03:40 AM i really appreciate your wonders and i have one request : what do you think about the hammurabi code +1 free social policy?
:goodjob:
sukritact Jun 18, 2011, 04:37 AM @Mailvi: I'd rather have that be a national wonder with a more generic name. Each country should have it's own set of laws.
Anyway, the new wonders are great! Gonna download them right now!
killmeplease Jun 18, 2011, 07:59 AM couldnt found 'More Wonders' in mod browser :(
Pouakai Jun 18, 2011, 12:33 PM @killmeplease: Search "Pouakai"
The Loot Jun 18, 2011, 01:35 PM Any E.T.A. on a All-in-one Pack? Or do you still have more wonders to go for?
Pouakai Jun 18, 2011, 01:44 PM On the OP there is a list of wonders I will be doing still. Any chance of an all in one pack will come after those.
Mentos Jun 19, 2011, 12:39 AM Here are some suggestions to bring a few of your wonders into line with the upcoming patch changes (http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?108900-June-July-Patch-Notes):
Teotihuacan: +4 Happiness next to Golden Age, Cost 600 -> 420
- Chichen Itza's (Cost 350 only pre-patch) Golden Age duration effect is regular while Teo's is only one-shot, so it’s fair to give Teo Happiness as well. We can't have enough happiness, can we?
Temple of Heaven: free Temple
Oriental Pearl Tower: free Broadcast Tower
Broadway: free Theater
Malwiya Minaret: free Temple
Alhambra: free Castle
Wartburg: free Castle
CN Tower: free Broadcast Tower
Kornak Sun Temple: free Temple
Kronborg: free Castle
Sky Tower: free Broadcast Tower
I like the idea of free sub-buildings. Maybe you will already have a certain free-building built in the city where you finish that particular wonder but there can always be exceptions to the rule. Even if you haven’t researched the sub-building yet, it just feels right and makes sense. Wonders already take enough time to build.
Pouakai Jun 19, 2011, 01:04 AM Seems like some good ideas there. I'm definately going to utelise their new Haiga Sophia effect
Mentos Jun 19, 2011, 02:12 AM It looks like there will be at least one new building attribute to toy with later for new wonder ideas, like:
- Eiffel Tower now give 5 Happiness plus 1 for every 2 Policies adopted
So many changes. Possible that building/wonder costs have also changed together with technology costs. Let's see later...
Moriboe Jun 19, 2011, 04:53 AM Here are some suggestions to bring a few of your wonders into line with the upcoming patch changes (http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?108900-June-July-Patch-Notes)It's only three wonders to which the free building applies and they all have the free building in their name. It appears just to counter the "I already have the GREAT library, why do I need to build another in this city?"-arguments. The Sydney Opera House doesn't grant an opera house though, probably due to the tech lag. I'd stick with the *tower, *temple* and -burg/borg wonders. Which is most actually.
ambrox62 Jun 19, 2011, 03:05 PM I noticed that art quality of latest wonders has been really high :crazyeye:
Well done :goodjob:
Pouakai Jun 19, 2011, 09:56 PM Thanks. Sukritact is doing an amazing job, and I'm really proud of some of the recent splashes I've produced (Taipei 101, Malwiya Minaret and Grand Canal feature on my desktop image rotation ;) )
JaeChunDaeSung Jun 20, 2011, 02:37 AM Might I suggest Cheomseongdae?
It is the oldest observatory in East Asia, built by the Silla dynasty of Korea. Though some scholars debate it was used more for astrological research than astronomy, both were indistinguishable from each other back then in Asian cultures, and is considered a cultural treasure.
I initially contemplated it as...
Requires: Calendar and Masonry
+2:c5culture: +1 :c5greatperson: Great Scientist
Receive 1 Great Scientist
or maybe...
+1:c5science: for every 3:c5citizen: where built
or even...
+3:c5science: where built
Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Moriboe Jun 20, 2011, 03:15 AM In line of earlier talk: how about a free observatory? It would be a substantial boost to a non-mountain city, probably overpowered in combination with the free scientist.
Pouakai Jun 20, 2011, 01:08 PM Good idea! I won't give it a free Observatory (Game-breaking in it's age) - but I do like you're effect suggestion. Now, in the immortal words of Television,
"It's On the list!"
JaeChunDaeSung Jun 20, 2011, 04:02 PM Thank you for taking my suggestion to consideration!
As old as it is, I admit it would make sense for it to be obsoleted at Astronomy, and since this was built where before the Renaissance, a free observatory would not be something I'd consider for it.
killmeplease Jun 21, 2011, 09:55 PM Pouakai,
could you please reveal how do you make icon graphics so they look like original content?
what is the technology of image processing? :)
Pouakai Jun 21, 2011, 09:59 PM Aah, that question should not be directed at me, but rather at sukritact - he does all the icons!
killmeplease Jun 21, 2011, 10:25 PM thanks, i'll ask him
sukritact Jun 24, 2011, 09:44 AM Pouakai, i noticed you added the giant Buddha to the list, I'm not sure if you're aware, but it should be leshan, not leishan

Pouakai Jun 25, 2011, 12:54 PM I'm kind of at a loss for ideas for the effect of the Florence Cathedral, any ideas?
shoi Jun 25, 2011, 03:49 PM I would think to add a culture bonus, but how about a +1 happiness once a great person born in that city dies? (They did bury bishops there)
Pouakai Jun 25, 2011, 04:06 PM Might be a bit hard to impliment, but thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a temporary effect, then give it a new one post-patch
killmeplease Jun 25, 2011, 10:50 PM maybe +1 culture per artist specialists
Pouakai Jun 25, 2011, 11:18 PM Florence Cathedral
Florence's Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower) dominates the Florence skyline to this day. Construction began in 1296 and took nearly 150 years, not being completed until 1436. The Cathedral is an engineering marvel, with the Octagonal dome spanning 44 metres at a base height of 52 metres above the ground. Ingame, the Florence Cathedral provides +1 :c5culture: Culture and +1 :c5faith: faith for every two :c5citizen: citizens in the city. killmeplease Jun 26, 2011, 02:56 AM Unless you also activate the 'Culture per pop' mod from mod browser, you will not recieve 1 culture per citizen!
doesn't Building_YieldChangesPerPop work with YIELD_CULTURE?
edit: yeah its not working :(
Mentos Jun 26, 2011, 03:09 AM Nice pictures!
In a previous test game, I've seen the Polynesian capital with 35 citizen. The cathedral would have been a great addition there. And I thought the Broadway had too much culture. :)
Are you aware that this 'Culture per Pop' mod also changes all culture buildings?
It's quite drastic rule change if someone just like to play with your wonder.
I prefer third-party mod independent custom wonders but the attribute addition itself is nice though. It could be a candidate for the BMF mod.
Mentos Jun 26, 2011, 03:28 AM doesn't Building_YieldChangesPerPop work with YIELD_CULTURE?
edit: yeah its not working :(
Yup, there is no YIELD_CULTURE defined in CIV5Yields.xml and supported by the code. Bad devs! :(
Based on vanilla, there are only those culture non-plot building options:
Culture: x for this city
CultureRateModifier: x% for this city
GlobalCultureRateModifier: x% for all cities
SpecialistExtraCulture: x per specialist bugged (http://wiki.2kgames.com/civ5/index.php/Non-functional_XML_Fields)
Building_ResourceCultureChanges: x per resource nearby city
Maybe the upcoming patch will introduce another one but I haven't seen any clue in the patch notes yet. The devs are quite stingy and usually only include what they need themselves.
Moriboe Jun 26, 2011, 06:13 AM SpecialistExtraCulture: x per specialistThis is bugged. When just built it works as intended, but later - I don't know when or how - the bonus culture goes through the roof in many cities, without any relation to specialists employed there.
For the culture per pop CiVUP has an alternative to Mylon's version (I no longer used the latter in BMF since the merge). You could use those XML tags, so it works for anyone playing with TBC or BMF?
Mentos Jun 26, 2011, 07:48 AM Good to know about SpecialistExtraCulture (http://wiki.2kgames.com/civ5/index.php/Non-functional_XML_Fields). I'm going to change the Platonic Academy and another wonder in my Native Wonders mod then.
Moriboe Jun 26, 2011, 09:04 AM Good link. Never figured out what was going on, I should have looked around more apparently.
seasnake Jun 26, 2011, 10:12 AM You have some excellent wonder icons/splash screens. A question, what do they look like in the game itself? Do they show up on the map?
My suggestion for a wonder would include Petra in Jordan, and the Bamyam Buddha Statutes formerly of Asia. I think these wonders are particularly amazing in light of when they were made. The other I would like to see is Trafalgar Square, with it being tied to Navigation, a tech that is put off too easily.
But really, I'm planning to start a small mod after the next patch/DLC. I think 1) the tech tree needs balancing, 2) units need more required techs (so you can't build Infantry unless you can build rifleman, or Mech Infantry if you can't build tanks, etc.), 3) a few civs need buffs, and 4) a few new Wonders would be nice in some of the leaner techs to give incentive to research those techs. But that's a ways away, I'm in the middle of a complicated work project and have sworn off all modding (because it consumes a bunch of my time) until August. I still have to update my Civ IV mods!
Moriboe Jun 26, 2011, 10:48 AM Petra is already out there (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=10309334&postcount=136).
Do they show up on the map?Adding new 3D models is not possible yet.
[...] and have sworn off all modding (because it consumes a bunch of my time) until August.I know exactly what you mean :D
MAGBaxter Jun 28, 2011, 01:42 PM Another two wonders you should consider doing is Vilcabamba in Peru, still a myth but thats where the incas went as a last refuge from the spanish, and Abu Simbel in upper Egypt. i love all these wonders but i would like to see them as one whole Mod pack, and another one for the wonders to be in coordination with the specific civilization, as a stand alone pack besides the modern wonders as they can be built by civs that dont have their own wonders.
Michael Vick Jun 28, 2011, 05:59 PM Olé! :D
You could really set this wonder apart from Machu Picchu by giving it a different terrain requirement. It's uniqueness could've been justified by making it a higher bonus for overseas trade routes but I guess that could not be coded. :( I say you make the city it's built in require river and coast. Mountain commerce = Machu Picchu, trans-atlantic commerce = La Torre del Oro. Naturally with all the extra gold tiles, the wonder will now be built in a city that's already wealthy... like Seville :) I do think you should mention Seville in the pedia entry, all the other wonders mention their hometown.
Now, with all due respect, sir, here a few images better than your current one with the Triana apartment building in the background. :D

Hi! I will be releasing new versions of all the wonders soon, as the new patch has changed costs of them. In the new version of Torre Del Oro I will add the much-requested river requirement, the mention of Seville and have it give the city a free harbor, so the city does become a center of overseas commerce. Also, I don't really like using standard oil paintings as splash images, so thanks for the suggestions, but at this stage I think I will keep the splash as is ;)
You mentioned earlier you live in Spain. Would you like to do a spanish translation for the wonders?
Another two wonders you should consider doing is Vilcabamba in Peru, still a myth but thats where the incas went as a last refuge from the spanish, and Abu Simbel in upper Egypt. i love all these wonders but i would like to see them as one whole Mod pack, and another one for the wonders to be in coordination with the specific civilization, as a stand alone pack besides the modern wonders as they can be built by civs that dont have their own wonders.
Abu Simbel is allready a mod by the maker of the epic icons, sukritact. It can be found Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=410578)
As for Vilcabamba, I don't think I will do it as it is allready a city in the Incan city list. Thanks for the suggestions though, keep them up!
ambrox62 Jun 29, 2011, 04:02 AM sir, here a few images
I really like the 2nd, expecially because it has the right size for a splash (the others are small). I've transformed it in a CiV splash dds. Rename it and replace the original one, if you like it more than the original one, although the original is good as well.

The free harbor was to make the city a center in maritime trade. The next wonder I'm going to do will have a free temple.
Teotihuacan I haven't updated yet because I am waiting for sukritact to fix the icon whenever he can
Pouakai Jul 04, 2011, 12:41 PM Hey guys! Sorry about the lack of a wonder this week. I had a history assignment in which I was working non-stop for most of the weekend, so didn't have time. It'll be up to you guys now - do you want the wonder before this coming weekend, or keep it there?
sukritact Jul 04, 2011, 08:21 PM So that's why you didn't release a wonder, i was worried that you didn't get my icon!
Pouakai Jul 08, 2011, 03:31 AM Karnak
The Karnak Temple Complex of Thebes (Modern day Luxor) is one which provides a cross-section of the beliefs associated with the Kemetic religion of Ancient Egyptian society. It is a sacred site on which temples and shrines have been constructed from the reign of Senusret I in 1941 BCE to Ptolemaic Egypt in as late as 30 BCE. It is widely known for the Avenue of Sphinxes, a row leading up to the entrance to Karnak which features approximately two thousand Sphinxes lining the path. Ingame, Karnak provides a free temple in the city in which it is built, and +2 :c5faith: faith from Flood plains. Karnak can be downloaded from Steam Workshop or the CivFanatics download database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17308).

Pouakai Jul 08, 2011, 01:46 PM Yeah, I didn't want it to have too much of an effect given how early it is.
Onacadarfi XXVI Jul 09, 2011, 11:03 AM Do you accept suggestion for wonders..? If you do, I have a suggestion;
Gripsholm Castle, Mariefred, Sweden.
http://www.slottsguiden.info/slott/5_3.jpg
http://www.pressbild.com/royalcourt/10_kungliga_slott/bild/bild_dl/Gripsholmsslott_100.jpg
History from wikipedia:Gripsholm Castle (Swedish: Gripsholms slott, Mariefred, verbally Griffin Islet's Castle) is a castle in Mariefred, Södermanland, in Sweden and is regarded as one of Sweden's finest historical monuments. It is located by lake Mälaren in south central Sweden, in the municipality of Strängnäs, about 60 km west of Stockholm. A fortress was built at the location around 1380 by Bo Jonsson Grip, and belonged to his family until the confiscation of mansions and castles by King Gustav I in 1526. The King tore it down, and built a fortified castle with circular corner towers and a wall, for defensive purposes. Of the original medieval fortress, only the façade of a wall remains.
Since Gustav Vasa, Gripsholm has belonged to the Swedish Royal Family and was used as their residence until 1713. Between 1563 and 1567, King Eric XIV imprisoned his brother John and his consort Catherine Jagiellon in the castle. This was also one of the castles that King Eric was imprisoned in when John had overthrown him. John's son Sigismund, later the King of Poland and Sweden, was born in the castle on June 20, 1566. The castle was again used as a prison between 1713 and 1773, before it was renovated by King Gustav III on behalf of his consort Sophia Magdalena. A theater was also added in one of the towers at this time.
Between 1889 and 1894, the castle underwent a heavy and controversial restoration by the architect Fredrik Lilljekvist during which many of the 17th and 18th-century alterations were removed. The largest change was the addition of a third floor; the planned demolition of a wing did not take place.
Now the castle is a museum which is open to the public, containing paintings and works of art. Part of the castle houses the National Collection of Portraits (Statens porträttsamlingar), one of the oldest portrait collection in the world.
Gripsholms slott is a very beautiful castle, In my opinion.
Pouakai Jul 16, 2011, 04:46 PM Sorry for the lateness! Yeah, I take requests, looks great!
I'm also announcing a new feature! Simply send me a PM or notify me in this topic, and I will add you to a list, which will be sent a PM each time a new wonder is released, maybe even before!
Mentos Jul 17, 2011, 09:58 AM It's okay, I haven't found any better photos without annoying t(err)ourists either.
sukritact Jul 17, 2011, 03:08 PM I know you don't like using real paintings but as I'll be heading to pisa tomorrow and might buy a painting (assuming they have one) would you like me to scan it and send it to you if i buy one?
Pouakai Jul 17, 2011, 03:18 PM If you do buy one. But maybe take a few good quality (And not to mention big) Landscape photos of the Tower.

Malvi Jul 18, 2011, 08:56 AM I was waiting for something like Piazza dei Miracoli ("Square of Miracles") better known for the leaning tower and i think it perfectly fits with Phisics tech! really well done! i would have preferred a free workshop instead of the mass media bonus, i think i'll change it ;) :king:
utberguy Jul 21, 2011, 07:51 PM Very curious what CN tower will have.
Zamboni Jul 22, 2011, 09:26 PM Very curious what CN tower will have.
CN Tower should be similar to old Eiffel Tower, although not quite as powerful - free Broadcast tower in the city in which it's built + culture bonus for all cities.
Pouakai Jul 23, 2011, 10:39 PM I'll try that when I end up doing the CN Tower, cheers
Ekmek Jul 23, 2011, 10:40 PM how do you make the rays in the background of the button?
Pouakai Jul 23, 2011, 10:47 PM For that, you will need to ask my icons technician, and co-author of the mods, sukritact.
Guys, I also released a v2 of the Leaning Tower to the mod browser, with the new splash!
sukritact Jul 24, 2011, 06:57 PM Can't wait to see how it looks like, downloading it right now!
Pouakai Jul 29, 2011, 11:31 PM Hey guys, sorry about the fact there hasn't been a new wonder yet. I'm doing a history assignment on New Zealand's involvement in World War 2. So I'll try to get the wonder completed today, but if not, it will definately be out before the end of the weekend
Pouakai Jul 30, 2011, 09:48 PM Kronborg
The Danish Star Fortress of Kronborg (Constructed during the reign of King Frederick II) Is a magnificent rennaisance castle built on the Northern tip of the island of Zealand. The fortress was built to control access to the Baltic Sea at the narrowest point of one of the exits. The castle was used by Danish royalty to extract tribute from Merchants, if they refused they were fired upon. Ingame, Kronborg provides +15% Gold from Trade Routes, gives a Free Caravel and +9 Defense in the city. It requires Astronomy and Chivalry, and can only be built in a coastal city. Kronborg can be downloaded from Steam Workshop or the CivFanatics download database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17369).

OmegaKabob Jul 31, 2011, 12:44 AM I have a nooby question .When I install two of them, there are two XML folders. I have to replace one of them. Will it still work if I rename one of the folders?
I love all the Wonders, you have done a great job.
Pouakai Jul 31, 2011, 12:50 AM What do you mean, when you install two? They should both be in seperate folders. But no, it won't work. I suggest downloading from the mod browser, then installing is all done automatically, and you don't need to worry about it!
OmegaKabob Jul 31, 2011, 12:59 AM Oh, I have a Mac so I have to do it manually. Could I put all the things in a mod into a folder named that mod? I'm really sorry to bother you with these questions. Each download has an XML folder. Also I can't wait for Palm Jumeriah!
Pouakai Jul 31, 2011, 01:33 AM Yeah, in the MODS folder, you make a new folder called, say, Kronborg (v.1) in which goes all the mod content. This means they will show up ingame and can be activated / deactivated individually.
OmegaKabob Jul 31, 2011, 10:45 AM Thanks a lot! Before I just had all the mod parts scrambled in with each other, so it was a little hard to tell what was what.
cleaner Aug 05, 2011, 07:19 PM I'm not 100% sure, but it seems like the Kronborg is incompatible with the latest Thal mod. When I have both it's impossible to construct anything, clicking the construction button has no effect.
Sneaks Aug 06, 2011, 11:09 AM I'd like to suggest scaling back on the number of location requirements on several of these wonders. Having more than one tends to lead to situations where cities have to develop around wonder requirements rather than wonders helping to develop cities.
Pouakai Aug 06, 2011, 05:16 PM Itsukushima Shrine
Located on the Japanese island of Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine is one of the most iconic sites of Japan. The main feature is a 'floating' Torii gate, a symbol with the Shinto religion of Japan. In 1643, the view of the Torii gate was inscribed as one of the Three Views of Japan by Confucian scholar Hayashi Gahō, giving it the title of one of the three most beautiful vistas of the country. The shrine is dedicated to the daughters of Susanoo, the Shinto God of the Sea and of Storms, hense the semi-aquatic location of the shrine. Ingame, Itsukushima Shrine provides +2 :c5faith: Faith from all sea resources worked by the city, and +1 :c5culture: Culture on all Sea tiles, and requires Theology. I can confirm. Kronborg is incompatible with Thal's mods. Might have to do with the free unit caravel.
KIEJ.MANIK Aug 06, 2011, 10:42 PM Teotihuacan is really underpowered. Only +1 culture and a golden age for building it, I also recall it being only a little less expensive than Big Ben, which is really expensive considering it's a classical era wonder. Teotihuacan should be less expensive and have alot more culture, Teotihuacan is a very culturual site :)
Pouakai Aug 06, 2011, 10:45 PM Teotihuacan is in need of a massive overhaul. I just need someone to fix the issue of the icon being way too big for the game, then I can update everything and release.
sukritact Aug 07, 2011, 03:56 AM I've resized it and am sending the icon right now.

Pouakai Aug 12, 2011, 11:39 PM Korean Wonders Pack
Korea is home to many yet-to-be represented wonders of the world. In celebration of the release of the Korea and Wonders of the Ancient World DLC, myself and sukritact have created this pack featuring two wonders of Korea - Cheomseongdae, an ancient tower believed to have been used as an observatory, and Changdeokgung, one of the five palaces of the South Korean capital of Seoul. Ingame, Cheomseongdae provides +1 :c5science: Science for every 3 :c5citizen: Citizens in the city, and Changdeokgung provides a Free Great Person in the capital. The Korean Wonders Pack can be downloaded from Steam Workshop or the CivFanatics Download Database, page Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17453).

Pouakai Aug 13, 2011, 04:51 PM Currently, new 3D models are impossible due to the way the game has been done, so not currently. Maybe in the future, and if someone can model them, I can add them ;)
ScottMcPwn Aug 16, 2011, 12:18 PM Ok thank you :)

Pouakai Aug 20, 2011, 03:12 PM Sky Tower
The Sky Tower is an observation tower located in central Auckland, New Zealand. It was built across three years, from 1994 to 1997, and was opened on the third of March that year. At 328 metres, it is the tallest structure in New Zealand, and the freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Following the completion of the Sky Tower, it quickly became an icon of Auckland and New Zealand alike. Ingame, the Sky Tower provides a 15% reduction in :c5unhappy: unhappiness from :c5citizen: citizens in non-occupied cities, one :c5gold: gold for every four :c5citizen: citizens in the city, a free Broadcast tower in the city where it is constructed and becomes available with Ecology. Pouakai Aug 30, 2011, 12:20 PM Hollywood
The Los Angeles, USA district of Hollywood has long been associated with the American film industry. It began life as a real estate development named "Hollywoodland" at the start of the 20th century, with the first film studio opening just over a decade later. Since then, Hollywood has been under continual development, with the district now home to several multi-million dollar companies. Ingame, Hollywood provides +1 :c5happy: Happiness for every theatre in the empire, and requires Electronics. My biggest issue these days is finding the right combo of wonders to use. Turning them all on tends to be wildly overpowered.
sukritact Aug 31, 2011, 07:46 AM I've never downloaded all of them, much less activated them all at once!
Love the effect, it fits my play style really well!
Pouakai Sep 10, 2011, 09:29 PM Gripsholm
Gripsholm Castle is a fortress located on the shore of Lake Mälaren, near the town of Mariefred, Sweden. It was built during the 16th century on the site of a medieval fortress, and served as the residence for the Swedish royal family throughout much of the following centuries. Gripsholm has also functioned as a prison and a museum during its lifetime. Pouakai Sep 10, 2011, 10:33 PM Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore is an iconic monument located in the Black Hills of the American state of South Dakota. It was constructed using explosives and finer carving from the Granite rock of the hills during the early 20th century - construction began in 1927, and finished in 1941 as a result of lack of funding. The design features four U.S. Presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, chosen for their sucesses in expanding or securing American territories during their respective times as president. Ingame, Mount Rushmore causes the :c5gold: Gold cost of purchasing tiles to be reduced by -35%, and :c5angry: Unhappiness from :c5citizen: Citizens in Non-occupied cities to be reduced by -15%, while it requires a nearby mountain and Dynamite. Are you interested in making icons for leaders and units other than buildings ?
ambrox62 Sep 11, 2011, 02:19 AM But to compensate, there are two wonders today!
Really amazing as usual :goodjob:

I've tried making units, i find the best way is to "borrow" faces and parts from other units to reuse. if you'd like i could pm you with unit icons I've made for personal use.
I'll have a lot of free time in a few weeks! It's almost the holidays for my school, the exam's next week already. If you want i can start after the exams, that'd be on the 24th.
Thanks mate, credit to you too for getting me started! And no stealing sukritact!

Any possibility the Templo Mayor, Xunantich, or Great Zimbabwe could be added?
Hey, thanks mate. Great Zimbabwe as such I don't think I will include, it seems to be more of an empire than a wonder, feel free to prove me wrong though! The other two sound awesome, and are definately on the list as of now!
(You have no idea how many times I had to redo the word 'now' - kept hitting b for some reason!)
Sukritact: That's fine, just whenever you're able to. For the next couple icons, would you mind getting some of the earlier ones out of the way please? I've has people asking for the CN tower for a while now
sukritact Sep 12, 2011, 06:17 AM Have you ever considered doing these wonders?
World Trade Center (Slightly worried about what some may feel though)
Tokyo Tower
The London Eye
Santa Maria del Grazie (Leonardo's last supper)
Wat Arun
Pouakai Sep 12, 2011, 12:40 PM Have you ever considered doing these wonders?
World Trade Center (Slightly worried about what some may feel though)
Tokyo Tower
The London Eye
Santa Maria del Grazie (Leonardo's last supper)
Wat Arun
It would appear great minds think alike! :D I have thought of doing the top three in the past, and I'll add them to the list. I'd never heard of the last two, but they're both great, so why not?
EDIT: On second thought, I might make the World Trade Center one into 'World Trade Center Memorial'
EDIT2: I've actually decided not to do the WTC until a while after the 10th anniversary
Sneaks Sep 12, 2011, 01:49 PM I think the proper way to do the WTC is WTC One, the building that is being built now
CivOasis Sep 12, 2011, 02:25 PM I think Great Zimbabwe's just the city, the country was the Kingdom of Zimbabwe. The city's a national monument for the modern country, so it would be kinda cool.
Actually, a lot of the World Heritage sites would be awesome to see.
CivOasis Sep 12, 2011, 02:28 PM Actually, I'm planning a Pacific mod (more like a series) here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=439504
Would you be interested in making wonders for that region?
(as a side note, could I also get help with it? I'd imagine you know more about that region than I do.)
Sneaks Sep 12, 2011, 04:46 PM By the by, I had these lovely images sitting about that I forgot about. Feel free to quickly turn them into a Wonder.
Abraj Al Bait Towers
I included a .rar that has the original psd for the icon.
sukritact Sep 12, 2011, 09:05 PM I think Great Zimbabwe's just the city, the country was the Kingdom of Zimbabwe. The city's a national monument for the modern country, so it would be kinda cool.
I don't feel that it makes much sense. It would like making Persepolis or Sukhothai into wonders, both of them are world heritage sites.
By the by, I had these lovely images sitting about that I forgot about. Feel free to quickly turn them into a Wonder.
Looks amazing! Although personally i'd add an outer glow effect to the building ;)
Sneaks Sep 12, 2011, 09:30 PM Of course you would.
Speaking of, whats the trick to saving things as .DDS icons with the alpha transperency working?
Pouakai Sep 12, 2011, 09:43 PM That's a good idea, I'll do that. Thanks!
sukritact Sep 13, 2011, 06:31 AM Of course you would.
Speaking of, whats the trick to saving things as .DDS icons with the alpha transperency working?
I'm not sure i understand what you mean. Do you mean how to save dds icons with an edited alpha channel?
Sneaks Sep 13, 2011, 07:10 AM Yup! I seem to have forgotten the process as I had not done it in months, so every time it messes up quite a bit.
sukritact Sep 13, 2011, 10:59 AM Flatten the image , ensure there are only 4 channels (RGB and alpha) then save it as a dds, it has to be a particular type though, 8.8.8.8 something, i'll have to go check.
Sneaks Sep 13, 2011, 11:07 AM Problem is RGB is 4 channels to itself (RGB, red, blue, green) and Alpha makes 5.
Pouakai Sep 13, 2011, 01:26 PM Wow! I had actually been looking at that building yesterday on Wiki, I'll do a double release CN tower and that this weekend!
sukritact Sep 13, 2011, 05:16 PM Problem is RGB is 4 channels to itself (RGB, red, blue, green) and Alpha makes 5.
If you include RGB as a channel then you have a limit of five channels. Just save the dds format as 8.8.8.8 ARGB 32 BPP/ Unsigned. And make sure you've enabled alphas before that.
Wow! I had actually been looking at that building yesterday on Wiki, I'll do a double release CN tower and that this weekend!

I was talking about Sneaks' Abraj Al Bait Towers, but your avatar looks pretty epic too. Although Sneaks makes a good point about a bit of blurryness. But, if you don't mind, would you be able to convert his icon for it to the five .dds? Last time I did it didn't end well *coughTeotihuacan-HUGE-cough*
Sneaks Sep 13, 2011, 09:21 PM sukritact - official .dds guardian of incompetent splash image wonder makers (I spent probably 45 minutes trying to make that abraj icon into a dds)
Pouakai Sep 13, 2011, 09:45 PM You calling me incompotent? :D
Anyway, great to see the activity and vibe in this topic, really pleased about it all now.
Can I just ask everyone three quick questions, Do you use the front page at all, what do you think of the new front page layout, and what do you think of the new wonder post style?

I guess I am having issues enabling alphas then. Every time I think I have it set with an alpha layer, nope.
To answer your 3 questions:
- I never use the front page. I check this when it shows up in my User Control Panel as being replied to
- I like the layout, except where your second column has wonders listed way to the right of the screen
- whats the new style? The 3 image thing seems to work really well
Pouakai Sep 13, 2011, 09:53 PM - I didn't expect people to, but I like to keep it fancy for newcomers
- That's an issue with the [Float=right] tag I used, I'll try to fix it
- The new style I just realised hasn't been used fully in this topic yet, mainly in an alpha version in the Korean Wonders Pack topic.
EDIT: Is the list for #2 better now?
sukritact Sep 13, 2011, 11:16 PM Sneaks makes a good point about a bit of blurryness.
Avatars i upload always seem to be ridiculously blurry. :(
How'd you do yours pouakai, it doesn't look blurry at all.
would you be able to convert his icon for it to the five .dds?
No problem, i'll work on it and send it to you.
Can I just ask everyone three quick questions, Do you use the front page at all, what do you think of the new front page layout, and what do you think of the new wonder post style?
1. I often use the front page, i keep forgetting what icons i have to make, it's good you keep it interesting though.
2. I liked it, but the recent change makes it show up weird....
Pouakai Sep 14, 2011, 12:38 AM I took the .png you gave me, put it on MS Word with the page background colour the one we need here, then took a print screen, cropped and uploaded.

CivOasis Sep 14, 2011, 06:43 PM Okay, wandered around wikipedia, what about:
Joya de Ceren (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joya_de_Cer%C3%A9n),
the Nazca lines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazca_Lines),
or the Tomb of Askia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_of_Askia) (would be great, since the Songhai are in under him).

Wow! The first one could be a bit 'iffy' for reasons previously mentioned - it's more of a city than a wonder, it would be like having 'Pompeii' as a wonder. The other two are good though, I really like the Nazca lines, I don't know why I didn't think of them earlier!

Awesome, great job Sneaks! One thing though, any chance you could modify the spillway and white water so there is some detail there and it's not just blown out?
Sneaks Sep 14, 2011, 10:09 PM Would that I could.
