View Full Version : Preview: Patria AMV
utahjazz7 Jan 20, 2003, 10:10 PM I have posted this unit in the completed units forum
This was suggested as a flavor unit for a Polish mod. Since, I have added Poland to my game--with Piernik's wonderful leaderhead, of course--I decided to go ahead with it. The turret is the AMOS advanced mortar system. I'm not sure if this would be a mechanized infantry unit or a modern artillery unit. Hmm . . . someone let me know.
Anyway, due to poor conservation of saves when I first started using Rhino Evaluation 2.0, I have run out of my 25 saves. So, I downloaded version 3.0, and I saved this unit as a 2.0 model. I don't like the newer 3.0 version, so I will be doing all the rendering in the 2.0. This process is giving me a different look than my other units though. I'm getting a really hard shadow, which I don't really like. By the way, there are civ-specific areas, but they're on the side of the turret . . . in the very dark shadow. Oh well.
Anyway, here's a quick preview.

embryodead Jan 20, 2003, 10:48 PM I have one suggestion... can you make it darker and less saturated... like Civ3 units. I suspect that colours are intentional (observing other vehicles by you and boulboulgadol) but if not... colours closer to civ3 would be great.
BTW What's wrong with Rhino 3? (I don't have it yet). Less options with lights?
Neomega Jan 21, 2003, 04:48 AM 3 is out?
Yoda Power Jan 21, 2003, 04:51 AM Nice.
sween32 Jan 21, 2003, 05:27 AM man, you just keep pumping out these tanks.
i know i shouldn't really post a request here, but how about making a Marmon Herrington CTMS-ITBI when you're done with this? I'll post a preview.
BeBro Jan 21, 2003, 05:33 AM Looks very good, as always, utahjazz7 :)
I personally like the colors. A greater variety of color schemes (like in the reality) is good IMO, and itīs not that it woulld look completely out of place compared to the Firaxis units. :goodjob:
Prussian Jan 21, 2003, 02:34 PM I agree with Bebro, the colors are good I think. It makes the camo a little more distinct and noticeable. Helps to separate the unit out and distinguish it on the Civ III battlefield. And it is not so distinct that it looks cartoonish, though, as you said, the shadows are a bit severe. Thanks for cranking these out though!

it was out something like 2-3 days after I downloaded 2.0, but I'm glad I didn't touch it yet (like I suspected, that means 50 saves:)
utahjazz7 Jan 21, 2003, 07:18 PM Thanks for the compliments, everyone.
I have a request now. I need a sound made. I need a file with three quick explosions to go with the AttackA.flc; the AMOS system is capable of hiring very rapidly. Anyway, I know someone out there in CivFanatics-land can help. Here's the attack animation, remember three firings per looping. :)

I can make the sound file if you send me that attack.flc (to make sure that all 3 shot sounds match the anim). If you can upload it to cfc and pm me the link I'll make the file asap.
I understand you don't want to change the colors, but could you add the smoke to fire anim? (like someone did with one of your previous vehicles).

Great! Thank you. I sent a PM with a link to the animation. Ah . . . you'll probably notice that the animation is 18 frames long: frame 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 1. I don't know if that information will help, but . . . maybe it will. Thanks again. :D

At this rate I'll never run out of saves, I still have 12 left, because I am grouping my units in 4's or 5's, and not saving renderings of buildings and such.
If I do run out of saves, I have Open/FX as a back up which is free but 3 years old...... however it does have animations.

Do you have more pictures? I have a couple of other units that I kind of would like to make. But, I do love your leaderheads, and would like to return the favor. I would need some more pictures though. Ideally, photos or drawings from the sides, top, and back. Without them, I would have to guess how the unit looks. Nobody wants that; trust me.
Well, here, do this. Start a new unit request thread in creation and customization. Post any pictures and information there. Also, let me know how you want the animations to look--how you want it the attack, fortify, etc. What color should it be? I would think, something simple, like the Challenger 2, maybe? I should be able to make the unit relatively soon, if I have enough pictures. I'll be on the lookout for that unit request thread for the Marmon Herrington CTMS-ITBI.

Are you saying that you make four or five models at once without any saves? Holy cow.
holmstr Jan 22, 2003, 01:19 AM I like to add that the Patria AMV is a joint project by Finland and Sweden. This version is a mobile mortar (the turret can be fitted with other weapons of choice).
How to use it?Well I would make it an artillery (weird uh:crazyeye: ) with something like 12-14 power and speed 2.It's not defenceless so give some 4-6 in def.The other thing thats nice about it is that it can do direct fire (very nasty against buildings),so it could have some attack to 4-6 also.Don't make it to strong thou.I would say that 4(12)-4-2 would be a good setup. And the cost could be in the sams class as the Mech Inf.
And a very nice unit!!:)

Thanks for the information. I'm still not sure how I will add this unit to my game. I was thinking of using it as mechanized infantry with a decent bombard attack value, rather than an artillery unit with low attack/defense values. If it were an artillery unit, I would rarely see it because most games--when I get around to playing--don't last long enough to see radar artillery.

yup, my computer stays on at weeks at a time because of this......
but rhinoceros is very stable.
utahjazz7 Jan 22, 2003, 09:56 PM Well, I've now sent embryodead the unit, minus one attack sound. As soon as he gets me that sound, I'll post the unit. Here's an in-game screenshot.

That's not a bad idea. Unfortunately, I'm not the only one who uses this computer. :( It's bad enough around here when I'm making a model for four straight hours, let alone a week!
utahjazz7 Jan 23, 2003, 11:33 AM Well, she's done. Look for the unit in the unit creation forum.
Ossric Jan 23, 2003, 05:12 PM i feel that the wheels should be made smaller (if you compare it to the firaxis modern armor)
OmniMower Jan 24, 2003, 03:14 PM To late :D
