mordhiem - 4-5-1? If history has taught us one thing it is England can't play defensive (we can't play a lot of ways actually).

GK - David James

Little Scholesy is/has been playing out of his skin in that 'in the hole' role for Man Utd. He is basically given a free role and pops up into the box so many times to get the crucial goal or vital flick on it's unbelievable. Also, I don't consider a central midfield containing Gerrard and Murphy particulary defensive. The fact that Owen is our only world class striker (that still wants to play internationals,@Shearer) also makes this an easy desicion for me.

On the James note, a) Who else is there with the experience and b) Just because he is playing for West Ham at the moment he isn't given true opportunities to show how much he has improved since his calamity days. I dod consider Wright, but he needs another season or two. Kirkland is good player, but still a long way off yet. The most important attribute for a goalkeeper to have is experience.

Some of this is very easy.

The back four picks itself

Neville ( G or T not P) Ferdinand R Campbell Cole A( not Andy)

In midfield Gerrard and Beckham are certs . Scholes too - can play in a 4 or 'in the hole' with 5.

I guess Owen is a cert although he's not playing well. I'd still pick Shearer if he made himself available. Beattie - not yet. Euell
Murphy - not good enough. Dyer if fit is a good player. McManaman? Not convinced. Heskey - not at any price. Nicky Butt had a great world cup until injured.

So midfield

Beckham D Gerrard S Butt N Scholes P Dyer K

Butt as anchor - all others can get forward in support of Owen - especially Scholesy.

Up front : Owen with Beattie as sub

Keeper? - Kirkland looks good. Robinson was the best young keeper around until recently. Got to be between those two. I'd go with Kirkland right now.

well, can you put up a dutch team from the top of your head within a few mins? I'd really have to think a lot to get to the best player on every position when it's not one of my favourites.

Anyway, I just noticed that I for one specifically mentioned a defensive midfielder and one offensive midfielder ;) I play diamond :p

Do you want Frenchies allow you Henry, Pires, Petit, Wiltord, Sylvestre, Barthez and Dessailly ??

Goalkeeper: Richard Wright (Reluctantly; Seaman can't catch crosses)

Right back: Gary Neville (I'm a Man. United fan. :D But I think he's better than Mills anyway)

Center back: Sol Campbell, Gareth Southgate

Left back: Ashley Cole

Right midfield: David Beckham (He's personally objectionable but he crosses a good ball :D)

Central midfield: Paul Scholes, Danny Murphy

(Not Steven Gerrard. I don't think his game is developing; he plays a little speculatively (too many hit-and-hope shots and long balls for my liking) and has an awful disciplinary record)

Left midfield: Graham Le Saux (Reluctantly. He's usually designated as a defender, but he plays reasonably well in midfield for Chelsea when they ask him to do so)

Attackers: Michael Owen, Jason Euell (Euell's been playing like a demon for Charlton, in either attack or midfield. England lacks a striker with the dominance of Ronaldo or Fernando Morientes at the moment.)

What do I care, anyway? I like Brazil.

Not Steven Gerrard. I don't think his game is developing; he plays a little speculatively (too many hit-and-hope shots and long balls for my liking) and has an awful disciplinary record He is a tackling midfielder, of course, he is going to have an awful disciplinary record. Look at Keane and Veira for more details. As for his long balls, he probably does as many as Beckham and (because I like a bit of controversy) I think he is better than Beckham at that.
Jason Euell
 Have I stepped into the twilight zone?
I'd go with Kirkland right now.
:goodjob: Best keeper we have ever produced, besides Gordon Banks of course.
The most important attribute for a goalkeeper to have is experience.
Yeah but surely not the experience of picking the ball out of the net after another dropped catch.

Desailly, Petit and Wiltord wouldn't get in our team. The rest? Yes please!

RE: David James, how many caps have Kirkland and Robinson got between them? That's what I mean by experience. James would only need to play a few matches whilst Robinson and Kirkland get used to the international set up, feel their way around the squad. The only concern I have is that Kirkland could be dropped at any moment and be replaced by Dudek, he isn't guarenteed a first team start.

It makes sense to use Kirkland or Robinson now though so that they gain experience and become the England number one for a long period of time rather than having to continually swap the goalkeeper.

Kirkland has as much chance of being dropped as any Premiership goalkeeper. And anyway being threatened with replacement is what keeps players sharp (and illegal drugs, of course).

Yes but last night he was faced with the footballing might that is Jason Euell. Considering that, 4 goals doesn't sound that bad.

Don't judge keepers by the actions of their defence. Last night, (in the last 18 months actually) the Hammers defence wasn't just all over the place, but physically impaired and rendered incapable of running backwards. Or so it seemed...

Its time for England to break in a new keeper. Seaman is still good but his day is over.

James has had chances - but make crucial mistakes. He makes flashy shot stoppiing saves but his decision making is poor

Both Robinson and Kirkland are younger - and IMHO better. Right now they are both holding down premiership places at good clubs. I'd go with Kirkland with Robinson putting pressure on him.

Dell didnt pick Nicky Butt

Ok - after Sunday, delete Kirkland. Havent heard the hospital report, but it looks like he's going to be out for a while with a damaged knee. James might have hurt his back picking the ball out of the net so many times - so its Robinson for me in goal.
