I had this problem, where I couldn't play it. I think this was the 1.04 patch. I played 1.01 until 1.14 came out, and 1.14 works fine for me.

I think what I found worked for 1.04 was that I would put the CD in the drive (open and close it, my PTW disk doesn't leave my DVD-ROM) and run it from the autorun menu. Might want to try that, since you said you were trying to run from desktop.

It's definitely worth trying to uninstall it and re-install it. A few days ago, I installed a security update for Windows XP and noticed that there was a lag time of a second or two whenever I gave one of my workers a command. Then I installed another security update yesterday and suddenly PTW wouldn't run! (It works fine now, but thank you, Microsoft - somewhere within those two security updates my system lost the directory where I keep most of my 'personal' stuff, including all my digital pictures of my grandson. Now I'll get to find out if I can restore selectively with Norton Ghost - oh, what fun!

Could it be the fact that I have a 300 MhZ proc? If it is, I assumed PTW would work since Civ 3 worked fine...or...it could be because it was a burned copy from my friend(please don't flame me, I swear I was going to buy, but the anticipation for online Civ was killing me)

Identical problem here, but no one seems to care about my thread.

My pc's well above the hardware requirements. I can't imagine what's causing this.

Some brands of CD-Rom drives apparently cause problems with PTW - actually, it's probably the other way around. Not sure which drives are prone to this, but some of them may be mentioned in some of the tech support threads.

I think it is the CD and some copyright protection stuff, I dunno.

Might there be a problem if I installed civ3 and ptw in different drives? I've got a dvd and cd-rw drive, and I'm keeping one disc in each...
