*no one point out the UK is in Europe. I don't need your pedantry here!

26-9-2001 LucyDuke has created a map of the camera's travels which can be found here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=10916140&postcount=229

You are responsible for PMing the poster before you on this list with your name and address OR the address of a local post office which can hold the package for you, thus not requiring you to give out your actual address if you so choose. If you wish to use this option, you are responsible for contacting your country's postal service to get required information.

So for example, Warpus is responsible for PMing me his address, Valka is reposnible for PMing Warpus her address and so on. If a member fails to PM you, and doesn't respond to a request for their mailing information, skip to the next poster on the list.

As a reminder, we do have a patron willing to help out other users who find the next step in mailing to be more expensive than they'd anticipated. If you need assistance, contact me (Contre) via PM. Do try and use the cheapest method possible though. There's no need to ship expedited.

Included with the camera will be a small notebook to write notes about the picture you took and why you took it. It may also be used for just about anything else you'd like to write to others. If you so choose, you may also send a small trinket of where you're from to the next poster. This is entirely up to you. I think I shall send Warpus a twig.

I will update the thread as needed with more information as needed.

AUSSIES / KIWIS NEEDED!

I want to take a virtual vacation. And I want to visit you all. My idea is to buy a disposable camera and mail it to another CFC member. That CFC member will take one picture and then forward the camera to the next CFC member. We chain it location to location, around the world, eventually back to me. I will then have the film developed and I will post the pictures everyone took on this thread.

If you want in, post! The only restrictions are do not take photos that cannot be posted to this site. Other than that, if you want to take a photo of your front door, a coffee shop, of your sofa... or you want to drive for a day and take a scenic photo, it's completely up to you.

A couple of disclaimers.

1: If your location isn't listed, you'll need to add it to your post. I want to try and keep each mailing step efficient, so we're not paying for postage from London, to Sidney, back to Lisbon.

2: You will need to provide your real name and address to another CFC user through PMs. If you're uncomfortable revealing yourself in such a manner, please do not join! If you're uncomfortable with a specific user knowing your IRL info, PM me and I will make sure they are not the link before you.

3: You are responsible for postage to the next CFC user. While I will try and keep each step as short as possible, some members will need to send the package across oceans. This will be more expensive. If you're willing to bear the additional postage to send the camera to another continent, please post as such!

I would really like to have enough members to use up an entire film roll (24 or 27 pictures).

I may do digital since I can get a cheap one for about the same price. But I still want to limit it to only 20-30 people so the camera finishes the trip somewhat quickly. There is also the issue of charging it if it's not USB... we all have different plug standards.

Need more sign ups! Also need people willing to incur the extra postage to send between continents. And I'd like more Aussies / Kiwis and people in Asia.

On the digital/film thing: Digital would be better in the sense that people could afford to take more than one photo of their place, in case the first picture gets screwed up for some reason. Of course, more photos mean more editing in the end, so an agreement to limit ourselves to 2-3 pictures regardless would be in order.

That won't mean much when someone takes the camera with them on a night out and ends up filling half the memory card with Walls and drunks leaning on them, a photographic essay.

If we do digital (I can get a 2mp camera off craigslist for like 5-10 dollars) one of the disclaimers will have to be, "put memory card in your computer at your own risk" -- I don't trust all y'all to not have some dubious virus.

Plus, I won't lie, one of the reasons I want film is so no one can peak at the project before it's done.

Gotta confess - digital cameras are one piece of modern technology I haven't mastered. When I take pictures, I still tend to think in terms of 35mm film. Heck, I still have my Kodak instamatic (do they even make film for those anymore?). This will give me an excuse to learn. :)

Don't plot it, randomise it. It's fairer that way, since otherwise one person from each country will be lumped with a huge postage bill etc.

Also, if you randomise it, and only tell people who they're to send it to, it means that at the end we'll have an eclectic sequence of photos, and we can guess who took what photo based on the photo.

What you think, wranger?

LucyDuke

For the oversea shipment, couldn't you just figure out the cost of postage and divide it by the number of people in that country taking pictures? Just have everyone insert their amount into the envelope as they send it off to the next person.

I can't use Euros in Canada.

What I mean is that as the camera is being sent around the UK, everyone adds some cash to it so the final person doesn't have to completely bear the cost of oceanic shipping. It might not work the best with Canada/America, but it would help distribute the cost for our British/Aussie brethren.

This. Tbh, I can't really afford a cross-continent postage bill, but I'm sure someone from the UK crew will be happy to pay for it. If necessary, I would be happy to chip in some, but sending it around the world multiple times just isn't financially viable for some of us.

Yeah, I think where possible the hops should all be within the same country (or Schengen area or whatever, where appropriate), to minimize the cross-border shipping (with its potential customs issues, too) and where a country has internal region-based shipping prices (i.e. the US), better to go west-to-east or vice versa. Boundless and I have already volunteered to handle the out-country shipping from our respective countries.

Neither can I, I can only afford to send to someone in the UK, overseas is way too expensive (I'm still a student so don't earn an income).

As I said in the OP, the order will be to minimize transport costs -- once the package hits the UK for example, every UK poster will receive it before it's mailed out of the UK. I also asked for, and got, volunteers to bear the extra cost of transcontinental shipping.

However, when I was looking at Royal Mail prices, shipping to North America isn't cheap (it was like 3 times the price to mail UK to Canada than it was to mail Canada to Australia). When I know the package weight / dimensions I'll post them.

contre
Aug 22, 2011, 02:59 PM
As an update, one of the members partaking in this -- who happens to be insanely generous, beyond words really -- has offered to subsidize postage up to 200 dollars when it's prohibitively expensive. Please note that you should only contact me about this if you actually cannot afford postage for the next hop.

Valka D'Ur

I wonder if it would add too much to the postage to include a few pieces of notepaper, so we could write a sentence or two of greetings to each other.

About notes, I'd think not. And if it did raise the price, it would be quite minuscule. I think I'd include a small note book. If people want to send a small token to the next poster, that's also fine -- after all, that extra weight is paid for by the sender.

I NOW NEED A VOLUNTEER!

Someone here has to ship to Australia. This will not be cheap. However, we have a patron for this who is subsidizing some of the costs. Whomever agrees to send from their country (Norway, Sweden, Finland or Germany) to Aussieland will not have to bear the cost alone... and may actually be able to do it for next to nothing.

So if one of the following posters will volunteer, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I'm sticking with a disposable film camera, so the 37 is a rather firm limit. I know it seems somewhat silly to use such antiquated technology, but I didn't like the idea of A: people peaking and B: exposing my computer to a virus because someone else has sloppy computer keeping.

I think nearly everyone has a digital camera with which they can take pictures to share on CFC. The idea behind this is a bit different.

Do you have still open slots? If you do, could you sandwich someone from Prague into the European list?

No other Koreans have signed up, so you'd be getting a package from Finland or Turkey. You'd then be shipping to Aussieland, though by South Korea's post website, it would be pretty cheap to send.

Acceptable content is stuff that can be posted here.

Whatever is ok to post here . Basically don't go with your instinct . And dont stuff up cause the answer is 1 (and have a back up explanation as to why half a shoe is a fantastic shot )

Well, you have to turn a little dial to move the next piece of film into place, so as long as you wait to set the picture until you're ready to take the picture, you shouldn't be getting errant shots.

And then once we have this down pat , Contre puts a video camera in the post and we make an Oscar winning film.

It would be a pretty cool film, but everyone receiving internationally would have to pay duty on the camera (and it wouldn't be a cheap camera) even though they're not keeping it.

Yes I would, you Canuck's are strange like that.
We used to have a main post office, about 20 years ago. But the federal government asked our MP if he thought we really needed it, and he said, "Nah."

So they closed it and turned the building into a tax office. Postal services were farmed out to whatever local drugstores and grocery stores that had space and they could agree on who would pay for what renovations. My nearest post office is a 30-minute walk from here (a bit shorter time if I cut across the school yard which is illegal to do once school starts next week).

But we old-timers still refer to the former post office building as "the old Post Office". It's sad when so many people now wonder what we're talking about, and I feel sympathy for the folks who moved out of town for a few years and came back to discover the place they thought they could go for postal services isn't available anymore.

We are off! Mailed this afternoon. Should be there by Wednesday, Dr Warpus!

Oh crap, I should go check my mail! I haven't checked it since about.. Wednesday. :p

I've been pretty busy lately and not at all involved in this thread, but I HAVE been scouting out photo opportunities in the area and doing extensive research involving millions of dollars.. so I am sort of involved.. and Isshould probably read the rest of the thread, but.. What if we send another camera backwards? That way the people at the end of the list don't have to wait 6 years to get involved.

Hey guys, I just opened the package from contre

Your notes say "Do not wind the camera before you are ready to take the picture"

By this you mean that we're supposed to wind it up when ready.. and at no other time.. right? Probably right, but I haven't used one of these in ages so thought I'd clarify. I wind it up until I can't anymore, right?

But yeah, it made it!

If you wind it up before hand, it could take a picture in the package or at another time.

Glad you could read my handwriting.

The winding thing is a precaution. We don't have the luxury of many redos. If you wound it up at home and took it to campus, it could take a picture in your pocket.

If anyone drops out, I'll be sure to get you guys (and anyone else) in. Plus, when the camera is passing near you guys, I'll check with posters to see how many pictures are left. If there's room, I'll get ya in.

The camera and notebook are currently sitting on my bookshelf, waiting for 2 things:

1. For me to get over this damn cold I've got so I'll have the energy to go to the place I picked out for the photo; and

2. For a decently sunny day.

I printed out a blank map of the world and drew dots on it corresponding roughly to where posters said they were located. I can't say it was a very accurate map.

Not the most accurate ever, but it should be good enough. I put Masada in the desert because I dunno specifically where in NT to put him, and dunno where in South Korea Shekwan is so he's in the middle. And it's kind of huge. Three are too close together... they overlap kinda.

I asked that they be written into the note book, but since people should be posting info on received / sent in this thread too, that shouldn't be a hard detail to track along the way.

According to the notebook, you took your picture on September 8, around 3 p.m.

It's probably a good idea that you resisted taking a picture of the girls from the Kinesiology Department since nobody here cares about stupid crap like that...

Is this actually happening? We've done like 3 people in a month, so this will take like, what, a year by my calculations?

A year in which some of us will have moved house, or quit CFC?

I apologize to everyone for the holdup. I moved, did not immediately know my new mailing address, since time was critical and I had to take the next available qualified apartment, sight unseen. Then due to stress, crazy weather, and some twit who never heard of how not to spread germs, I got a cold. Which is STILL hanging on, after 3 weeks! Add to that, the weather has not been cooperating (a sunny day is required)... I will take the picture on the very first day that is sunny and I have the energy to do so. My sincere hope is that this will be tomorrow.

...In which case they will be skipped. I never expected this to go at a million miles an hour, and I doubt contre is expecting the camera back this side of next summer.
If anyone on the list moves, just pass along your new mailing address. If you quit CFC, why worry about an activity you won't be participating in anyway? At the very least, make sure people around you on the list know that you're to be skipped. Same if you should happen to get banned for any significant length of time.

It'd be fine with me, as long as the person before me would agree to mail it all the way from the US. One thing though is that unfortunately post services down here may not be as fast as in USA/Europe.
