I don't get it. The pic is of Sid Meier. Is he supposed to be a Mel Brooks look-alike? Or, is that a line from a Mel Brooks' film?

"Its good to be the king" is from Mel Brooks' History of the World Part I.

It's also used at the end of "Robin Hood: Men in Tights."

And in "The King of Old Broadway" in "The Producers" (on Broadway, of course)

Mel Brooks' films were always known to have a reference to a previous film in them somewhere. The Men in Tights songs also happened to be the same song used for the "Jews In Space" segment of History of the World Part I. Spaceballs had the video collection with all of the previous movies... I'll have to look at my MB collection this weekend (after taking Tenshi to dinner for valentine's day, of course) and can let you know the other references if your interested.

Yeah, I'm still here, I haven't switched over to a PC just yet... I just got Jaguar, and am going to put it on my iBook first, then look at the 153 posts I printed off of the Apple discussion boards to see if I can get it installed on my Beige G3 *without* having to reformat my drive or jump through too many hoops to get it to work.. my printing situation is now officially the pits!

How old is the beige G3? I've got an old tray-loading iMac G3 that runs Jaguar fine.

I *think* it's a rev A Gossamer G3/233

I think Jaguar's just got problems with the beige model macs... I suppose it's something to do with the memory, video, serial ports, and the floppy drive. I could be wrong though. I always had problems upgrading OSX versions on my Beige G3, but no problems on my iBook. As it is, I can't take Gossamer up to 10.1.5, because I keep getting kernel panics.

Apparently, I have to manually reset the pram and a few other settings with that little silver button next to the PCI slots. I'm at 384 MB of RAM, which is supposed to be the limit a Gossamer can go to. So I shouldn't have to take out the RAM.. However, I did notice in the Apple Discussion boards that several people ended up having to take out all but one RAM dimm... doins so would drop me to 128, but if it allows me to upgrade to Jaguar and still keep my system in tact, I'm all for it.

Thankfully, the only thing I keep on my OSX volume are the user directories, even if I have to reformat the drive, all my applications will still be there. Too many things to have to reinstall!

Grey, do you have the latest firmware on your G3? I can see you having problems with X, I don't think that X was intended to run on pre-USB machines, just a guess though.

::load groaning in large quantites::

Got my Jaguar CDs in the mail yesterday. Went to install Jaguar on my computers here's what happened

iBook... Boots from Disk 1 and goes into install mode, then just sits there for HOURS on reading packages.

Tried it on my beige G3 gossamer, zapped PRam, dropped down to a single RAM DIMM, removed the USB card.. what do I get for my efforts?

Kernel panics when the Jaguar CD is trying to load at boot time!!!

I'm starting to get really fed up with Apple. Is this how you treat loayal users? I can't afford to purchase a newer power mac. OS X is SUPPOSED to run on my G3. Apple claims it will. So why won't it?!?

I seem to remember hearing somewhere that Apple mentioned that OS X would work on blue and white G3s and later. At home we have a beige G3 running Jaguar, but we installed an OS X compatible (more like OS X-foolable) G4 processor in our beige bombshell (along with a new hard drive and a CD burner) prior to installation. And to give Apple credit, they probably were'nt counting on anyone using a beige G3 as their most up-to-date computer. Whether or not you are isn't the point, though, let me get back on topic, which is...
...
Shoot, somebody help me out here!

@Grey Randall

Do you have a RAM upgrade on the iBook? Had the same problem with my eMac and learned that Jaguar is much less tolerant of RAM flaws than earlier versions. Don't ask me why, that's just what Apple Tech Support told me. I had to send back my cheap freebie RAM and buy "quality" (Viking?) RAM to get my eMac back up to 384MB. Anyways, I had a similar symptom to you - Jaguar would not install or load with the cheap RAM stick installed, but without it (or with the more expensive stick) it works fine. Oh, and a couple of times I got a kernel error, so that may actually be relevant to the other one. Possible, anyway... ?? :hmm:

HTH

@numcul: something about a screenshot Mel Brooks tribute with pic of Sid Meier, and being a king is a good thing ... ??
