Final Fantasy blamed for suicides http://www.eurogamer.net/news.php?id=6021

Russian police are apparently blaming Final Fantasy for a series of six teenage suicides over the last four months in a town called Kstovo, according to a report in Pravda headlined "Video Game Killed 6 Teenagers". The paper's English translation is rather hit and miss (mostly miss), but it appears that law enforcement officers are investigating the possibility that the game has a "destructive influence on psychology", or even that there was "some code signal recorded on the CD game which made the guys kill themselves", after three teenagers hung themselves and another three jumped off rooftops.
Perhaps even more bizarre though is the fact that Russia last week became one of the first countries to recognise computer games as a legitimate sport. While groups in Europe and America have been campaigning for this for some time now, the Russians have even gone so far as to encourage schools to teach their pupils about computer games in physical education lessons, alongside more traditional sports like athletics and soccer!

Naturally Pravda sees this move as a terrible threat to Mother Russia though. "Don’t you agree the new school subject is alarming in light of the recent events? Who will estimate the level of harm of computer games at school? Will the story that took place in Kstovo repeat itself in Russia as a whole?"

Those people would've killed themselves without final fantasy's help, I'm sure, if they were that suicidal. I cannot see how final fantasy could contribute, even if it was just the straw that broke the camel's back and drove it to suicide.

this is really getting old people need to quit blaming video games for suicides or killings. A person makes a choice to kill someone it has nothing to do with games.

You know, I just pulled out my old NES version of FFI and it talked to ME! It turned into a dog, licked its balls, and told me to kill the next door neighbor with her flowers!!

How can a video game possibly be considered a sport? Game, yes; sport, no.

To be a sport, a game requires more than just hand eye coordination, or strategy. It involves physical activity beyond point and click.

That's my 2 coppers.

Theres plenty of other sports that shouldn't be sports...

Why do people always post things like this thread? We all know what side everyone here will be on so it would just be best to ignore these types of things...

I said russia was stupid because of making video games a sport not because they blamed video games IE FF8 for the deaths

As I recall, THe USA blamed numerous games, movies, ect. for school violence and suicides, like the Columbine incident. They said that Doom 2 prompted their violent behaviour? (something like that)
